Atsushi: Regenerate?

Dazai: Is that, not what's happening here?

Atsushi: No, my ability doesn't regenerate or heal. It's negating my wound.

Dazai:... What?

Atsushi: Yeah, it basically returns the injury to what it's original state.

Dazai: How does that work?

Atsushi: shrugs The tiger says I need a leg and so my leg has no choice but to come back.

Dazai: Atsushi that makes no sense.

Atsushi: I'm sorry, is the man who can encode messages into his heart beat really telling me that I'm talking nonsense?

Dazai: Touché.

Though it's not a very common take, i have seen a few misconceptions about how the ADA doesn't care about Dazai and vice versa so i have a little something to say on the matter.

As subtle as it may be, the ADA DOES care about about Dazai and I believe that after 2 years of being in the Agency, Dazai has also grown to care for the Agency beyond Oda's promise. (Maybe not a lot, but I still believe that he does care to a certain extent).

When it comes to the ADA:

They literally devised an entire plan to revive Dazai if he ever succeeded in his suicide attempts, which shows that they do care.

And then there's Atsushi, who definitely trusts and cares a lot about Dazai- as his mentor, as some who saved his life basically, and he was not willing to let Dazai die in '55 minutes'.

Kunikida placed a transmitter on this suicidal idiot in order to keep track of his location.

Ranpo probably even figured out Dazai's criminal past on his first meeting with him, yet he didn't question him any further about it.

Despite knowing about his PM past, the Agency accepted him and showed no hostility towards him.

As for Dazai:

There's the fact about how he genuinely respects the members of the ADA. For instance, Ranpo is one of the members he truly admires, and he even gushes about Ranpo's intellect in 'Dazai's entrance exam'.

To say that the ADA holds no value to Dazai- they're just pawns to him and that he would betray them if he ever has to (which I've seen people say) is quite wrong, in my opinion. While it is true that Dazai treats most people as pawns, he manipulates them to act on his predictions- that's just how he is, I think saying that he doesn't give a crap about the ADA would be wrong. And betraying the ADA would mean undoing his promise to Oda, which is something I'm sure he's not willing to do.

We know Dazai isn't the type to outright say it if he cares about someone or something, so my interpretation of this is that in his own subtle way, he does care about the Agency.

Dazai is a part of the ADA just as any other member, and all of them respect each other's capabilities and care about each other.

If I had a nickel for every time Atsushi had to fight a legendary terrorist on/near standard island under the effects of time manipulation while Akutagawa showed up, tried to kill him, helped him, and then died, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that Asagiri made me go thru that twice

Stray Thoughts on Bungo Stray Dogs: 55 Minutes [SPOILERS]

I just finished the amazing 55 Minutes light novel. These are some thoughts I occasionally typed out as I was reading.

(If you haven't read the novel this is all going to sound batshit.)

Casually admitting to breaking into the weather bureau because a weather report was wrong is a top-10 Kunikida moment.

Dazai giggling in trash cans reminds me of the laughing honey pot from the "Heffalumps and Woozles" sequence in Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day.

Poor Atsushi bombing at improv in front of the thieves while trying to stall for Kunikida to show up.

Okay, so we can add "Watched everything I know and love perish before dying myself in an earlier timeline, having the memory imprinted on my present self, and redoing an investigation from the beginning with a new ulterior goal with millions of lives hanging in the balance" to Atsushi's extensive list of traumas.

Kunikida puts just as much faith in Dazai as Atsushi does.

Atsushi taking the time to scare Dazai is such a little brother move.

Dazai immediately getting Atsushi back is such a big brother move.

Oh my god, Atsushi and Akutagawa died together in the other timeline! And now this timeline's SSKK are imprinted-memories-of-a-localized-apocalypse buddies! I can totally be normal about that. Maybe.

Oh good, Atsushi gets to embarrass himself twice when dealing with the thieves. At least he handled it well the second time around.

Jesus, how much pudding did Dazai force-feed a guy for it to qualify as torture?

Nice to know that canon!Atsushi and (presumably) BEAST!Atsushi share stealth skills. Makes sense. They both snuck into the kitchen to make themselves a decent meal at an orphanage that would beat them for just breathing.

Confirmation that Atsushi is "covered in scars" beyond the two burns on his torso, meaning that he only recently inherited the tiger's powers of regeneration.

Higuchi celebrating getting a compliment from Akutagawa is adorable.

I love watching Atsushi grow as an actual detective. It's easy to miss because he's often around Dazai and Ranpo, but I've always maintained that he's pretty smart in his own right. He figures a lot of things out for himself.

Kunikida heading the "How to save Dazai if he dies" committee is very sweet.

It's funny how the easiest way to get SSKK to get along in the early days was for a villain to suggest that they could get along.

"Finish it. Bring him peace." Damn, Aku.

That last bit with Wells… Fuck.
