Blu-ray Review: The House on Tombstone Hill
Tumblr media
The House on Tombstone Hill - better known as Dead Dudes in the House (the title under which it was released by Troma Entertainment) and occasionally known as The Dead Come Home - was not an original Troma production, but it's easy to see why the company picked it up for distribution. The scrappy film evokes a sense of campy, low-budget fun that would make the Toxic Avenger proud.
Although haunted house tropes and zombie elements are present, the film largely functions as a slasher. Mark (Douglas Gibson) gets a great deal on a huge house, but it's as creepy as it is dilapidated. He and six of his friends head to the abode to fix it up. Following a series of strange occurrences, a mysterious, hunchbacked old woman (also played by Gibson, under extensive makeup) who previously inhabited the house shows up.
Tumblr media
Although ostensibly frail, the senior citizen is a ruthless killer. And she's not alone; her seductive daughter also inhabits the manor to help lure the friends to their death at the hands of the geriatric psychopath. The victims inexplicably rise from the dead and join in the killing spree. They are not mindless zombies; they have the ability to think, speak, and use weapons.
Released in 1989, The House on Tombstone Hill written and directed by James Riffel (Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Terror). It was his first film, the evidence of which is all over the place. The problems begin at the script level; Riffel struggles to establish and follow rules in his film world. Failing the Screenwriting 101 tip of "Show don't tell," the characters constantly state what they are doing and thinking.
Tumblr media
Despite all of its shortcomings - and there are plenty - the movie delivers on the gore. Well-done considering its budget, the copious effects are headed by Ed French's (Terminator 2, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) with Bruce Spaulding Fuller (Misery, Resident Evil: Extinction). Even the old woman makeup on a young man is fairly convincing, although the cheap effects don't hold up as well in high definition.
The House on Tombstone Hill has been restored in 2K from the 16mm original camera negative for a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack from Vinegar Syndrome; a substantial upgrade in quality compared to Troma's DVD. The release features reversible artwork, with The House on Tombstone Hill on one side and Troma's curious "hip hop" art for Dead Dudes in the House on the other. Vinegar Syndrome also has an exclusive, limited edition slipcover featuring the film's third title - The Dead Come Home - to cover all the bases.
Tumblr media
The discs feature new video interviews with Gibson and fellow actors Mark Zobian and Victor Verhaeghe, edited together into a 29-minute piece. There's also a career-spanning, 42-minute audio interview with Riffel, which offers a bit more insight; such as the fact that Troma originally wanted to call the film Dead Kids on the Block to capitalize on the popularity of New Kids on the Block, but ultimately changed it for fear of litigation. A behind-the-scenes still gallery rounds out the extras.
Put the Friday the 13th, The Evil Dead, and The Shining in a Troma-budget blender, and you'd get something like The House on Tombstone Hill. Like the run-down dwelling depicted in the film, The House on Tombstone Hill has a variety of faults: undeveloped characters, bad acting, poor pacing, to name a few. Yet its willingness to lean into the '80s schlock and cliches with a touch of humor make it an entertaining B-movie.
The House on Tombstone Hill is available on Blu-ray/DVD via Vinegar Syndrome.
