“John B, what are we doing at the police station?” JJ asked, breaking the stuffy silence that was consuming the vehicle.
“Somebody’s gotta tell them what happened.” He justified.
“Need me to come in, like, as a witness?” you asked. He shook his head.
The heavy quiet was broken by Pope, coughing like he’d inhaled chili powder. “Easy there, chief.” JJ reprimanded, and you took the blunt away from your friend. “Alright,” JJ leaned through to John B, “I’m just gonna be real with you right now,” You watched his red cap, “You might end up in the lion’s den, but you don’t go there on purpose. It’s fundamental, just like my old man always told me, you should never, ever trust cops. No matter what the circumstance is.”
“Your old man’s an abusive liar.” Kie countered.
“I agree with JJ.” Pope spoke, and you frowned, holding back the giggle in your lips as he continued, “Fuck the police.”
“You going to the dark side now?” Kie snarked.
“When was the last time the police ever helped us?” He countered.
“Peterkin looked out for me, alright?” John B interrupted, “Or tried to, at least.”
There was a moment of thick quiet before he continued.
“They need to know.”
He looked around, none of you willing to argue as he got out of the car and entered the station. You looked over to JJ, who was determinedly ignoring your stare. You wondered what the fuck was going on because last time you checked, you had been on good terms with him. You sighed, looking out the window and waiting impatiently for John B to return so that the awkward silence would end. You took a hit from the blunt you’d taken from Pope, letting the smoke swirl around in your lungs before gently blowing it out, ignoring the frustrated looks you got from the other three.
Next thing you knew, everyone was shouting and the car was accelerating, the officer trying to open the car door discarded as the shocking adrenaline rush took ahold of the speeding car. Eyes wide, you took another hit from the blunt.
--
“Good news for residents of the Outer Banks, Dominion Power says their underwater transmission line, which will restore power to 95% of the area, should be functional within 24 hours.”
Sirens passed, but in the hazy atmosphere of the car, no one moved, other than to make sure the car didn’t turn. Pope and Kie sat in the front, JJ and John B to your right, seats reclined as you all attempted whatever kind of rest was possible on the worried heat of the day.
“And still no arrest for the shooting death of Sheriff Susan Peterkin. The state police have issued a statement regarding a local person of interest, a juvenile from-”
Kie clicked the radio off, glancing over at the three of you in the back.
“Let’s game this out.” JJ suggested, “Maybe you guys can help, being the smart ones and all, but… who are the cops going to believe? Ward Cameron or us? So the accuser is a big shot developer, kind of lord of the island, got the governor on speed dial kind of person, and the accused…” he looked over to his friend, “is John B, who is pretty much a homeless 16-year-old boy at the moment.”
“Thanks.” came the hoarse voice of the boy across from you.
“Shit.” you muttered, running a hand over your face and sitting up straight for the first time in hours. You twisted so that your back was leaning on the back oh Kie’s seat, and you were facing the three boys.
“Okay, man, Yucatan, alright?” JJ said, swiftly avoiding your arm as you stretched, “I’m saying, that’s the only option, what other option do you have?”
“Enough with the Mexico bullshit.” John B shook his head. “Sarah’s gonna bail me out.”
“She did witness the whole thing.” Kie pointed out.
“So did I?” you reminded, “So what? She’s gonna snitch on her brother for her dick appointment of the week? No offence, bro.”
“It’s not happening.” JJ reiterated, “We’ve gotta get you off the island.”
“The ferry.” Pope said, “It’s the only way.”
“Exit stage left while you still can.” JJ added. “Before the entire island is on lockdown.”
“Get down.” You reminded him softly, and you all ducked. You reached for JJ’s hand, but his simple gesture of pulling it away made you feel embarrassed, unsure of whatever was going on between you. You turned away from him, looking out the window again.
“Sarah’s not a pogue, John B.” Pope reminded.
“Yeah, you can’t stay here, man.”
“Let’s go then.” You muttered, and Pope pulled out, driving carefully to the docks. They were crowded, and you got out before anyone could argue, thankful for even two minutes out of the suffocating atmosphere. You walked to the sign, reading the notice about the ferry closure and ripping the wanted poster off its staples. You walked back to the car, reading it as you reached the vehicle, then passing it through Pope’s window and shaking your head solemnly. You got in next to JJ as they passed the paper around, JJ making a joke.
“Okay, so the whole island’s looking for John B right now.” Pope said.
“Well at least you know how much you’re worth.” You joked, receiving a frustrated look from Kie.
“Congratulations, John B,” JJ smirked, “you’re famous.”
“We gotta get to the HMS. We need small, no running lights-” kie began to reason, but John B cut her off.
“It’s at the Chateau, Kie.”
“And I wonder if the cops have got the entire place staked out.” JJ said, voice dripping with sarcasm, “Let me think. Yeah, no, they definitely have that place locked down.”
“Hey Jay?” you nudged him, an idea forming, “Like, a couple of weeks ago, you mentioned your dad’s boat? The Ghost? Spectre?”
“The Phantom!” JJ and Pope caught on.
“He still got it?” Pope asked.
“Maybe.”
“You could get that right up the coast, no problem.” Pope said.
Bickering followed, and then the sudden realisation that Pope’s car was on the poster. Suddenly, someone was hitting the window and the car wasn’t starting and everyone was shouting. The car lurched forwards, straight into another car, and then took off, driving away as people watched, shocked.
The car sped forwards, crashing around as you all shouted for Pope to stop, his high ass was definitely not fit for driving.
“JB,” you shouted over everyone, “you need to get out.”
Pope braked, all of you thrust forwards with the force of it, and you found yourself pushing John B out of the car while JJ shouted instructions at him.
--
The two field tents were massive, rows of chairs on either side as swarms of people worked, talked, and typed. You wandered around for a minute or so, watching the officers interact, always being pushed back when you tried to talk to anyone. You could feel the eyes of the security team burning into you as you looked for Shoupe. Eventually, you saw him, talking to a taller man in an SBI windbreaker. You walked towards them slowly, finalising your plan in your head.
Shoupe saw you, and stepped aside from the conversation so that he was facing you, the agent turning as well, a frown forming as he took in your scruffy attire and the faint smell of JJ’s weed that was clinging to your clothes. You looked between them, “Uh, Officer Shoupe, I have some info.” You greeted.
“Who are you?” The agent interrupted, looking you over again.
“Um, I’m Y/N Y/L/N, I know John B.” you clarified, and he nodded.
“What have you got for us?” he asked, and you breathed in, and out, pinching yourself slightly.
“I saw everything on the airstrip.”
The SBI agent introduced himself as Bratcher, then they sat you down in one of the tents, letting you explain what you saw, uninterrupted, and asking questions when they saw fit. They told you that your account, while plausible, was a hard one to argue, especially against Ward Cameron, unless you had a second account to back it up.
Sarah Cameron, you thought. Talk to Sarah.
After taking your statement, they left you to sit in the field tent, shivering in the cold breeze and no coat, watching them call your dad, listening out for any relevant information you could gather.
You could feel their eyes on you, discussing what to do with the information you had for them. An officer, you couldn’t remember her name, had draped a jacket over your shoulders at some point, then led you away while the SBI agent gave a briefing.
You waited at the end of the tent, looking for anything to cease your worry and boredom.
Then you saw her. She looked as lost as you had, trying to work out who to talk to, just like you had a few hours ago. You stepped towards her.
“Sarah?” she turned to you, going to hug you, but an armed officer stepped between you, pulling you apart. “No, she’s my friend!” you struggled towards her, another officer holding her away from you, both of you shouting.
“What’s happening?” Bratcher asked, all of you stopped struggling.
“This is Sarah Cameron,” you explained, “she was there, like I said.”
He looked between you, and nodded, asking her if she was able to make a statement. They took her away, sitting her down at the other end of the tent, letting her talk. You saw Ward approaching.
“Y/N?” he frowned, and you raised your eyebrows.
“How do you know who I am?”
“Sarah’s mentioned you.” he looked around, “have you seen her?”
“Oh, is she no longer locked away in her room?” He tensed, confusion and anger contorting his features.
“How do you know about that?”
“Can’t say.” You said, “Not a great parenting strategy, just saying.”
He leapt forwards, a madness in his eyes that you’d never seen before. He grabbed you by the throat, screaming in your face while you clawed at his grip. Within seconds, other bodies were pulling him away. Your panic subsided, and you looked at Bratcher. You could use the situation to your advantage.
“See what I mean?” you yelled, pointing at him as you faced Bratcher, “He’s crazy! I told you, he attacked Big John, he’s the reason this is all happening!”
Bratcher sighed, signalling for his men to take away the older man. “I have to say, Miss Y/L/N, your story is making more sense. Two stories matching perfectly, his temper. But we talked to your father, you’re free to go, we’re almost done with Sarah.”
“What’s going to happen to John B?”
He sighed, “We’ve gotta bring him in, you understand that.”
You nodded, “I hope I shed some truth to the situation.”
You walked away, leaving the jacket on a chair as you passed, sending a reassuring smile to Sarah on your way out, you wandered the streets, finding your way to JJ’s house.
By some kind of miracle, you arrived at the same time as Kie and JJ. He was getting out of the car when he noticed you, and instead of making any move to hug you as normal, he froze.
“Look, JJ,” you sighed. “Why are you mad at me?”
You stood opposite him in his front yard, staring at the way he sighed, an odd mix of relief and defeat adorning his features. “I saw some texts, from Tyler.”
You nodded slowly. “I rejected him, if that’s what upset you. Since I met you, no guys have been the same, you know?”
His eyes pulled in slightly, as if realising that maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t one-sided. “Did you sleep with him?”
“Yeah.” you glanced at the floor, “I don’t really know why. Things were weird between us and I just - I missed my old life. But it was like, the confirmation I needed.”
“What do you mean?”
“I love you.”
His jaw dropped slightly in shock, running you words over in his head, working out whether you were genuine. You began to step back, and before you could think about what had just happened, he was kissing you.
It was urgent, emotive, full of everything that you couldn’t put into words. You broke apart, still slightly shocked at the confession. You looked at his front door.
“Do you want me to come with you?”
He looked to Kie, who was pretending she hadn’t watched, and nodded apprehensively, slipping a hand into yours and leading you to the door. He opened it, leading you through into the mess. You stepped over shoes and bottles as he led you in, calling out for his dad.
You ventured into the living room, seeing his dad passed out on the sofa, a half empty bottle of something on the table next to him. “Dad, I need the keys to the Phantom.” a snore sounded, “Dad?”
You looked down, noticing the sleeping pills and picking them up, showing the bottle to the blond boy next to you. Watching him, you could practically feel the hurt resonating off him, masked by his strong resolution as he looked back at his dad. Noticing the chain around his neck, between you you found a pencil and pin to get the keys with.
You stood a couple of feet behind him as he knelt down, preparing himself.
“Well, I didn’t expect to see you.”
The voice was a murmur, almost soft, and your heart was beating in your throat. You knew what he was capable of.
“You’re back.”
This time, Luke had more clarity in his voice, and was more awake. He hadn’t noticed you yet.
“Just checkin’ in.” JJ said, backing away as the older man sat up, taking a swig from a beer bottle.
“School out already?”
“What?” JJ frowned.
“Did you ditch? It’s alright, you can tell me.”
JJ nodded slowly, “Yeah. I hit the break, you know?”
“I hated school too. My boy!” Luke chuckled. You felt intrusive, like you were standing in on a moment that wasn’t yours to see. But the moment felt intimate, hitting you where it hurt as your eyes went glassy. “You know what? Listen, hey.” he stood shakily, “Hey, look, I know I’m hard on you sometimes.” JJ hummed, fear mixing into his pain, “But sometimes I - I see your mother in you, and it gets me a little tweaked, you know?”
You wiped a tear away, the scene before you hurting more than you would like to admit. The man looked at you, and you could see JJ’s shoulders tense.
“You got a girl?” he didn’t look away from you.
“Uh, yeah, Y/N.” JJ looked over at you, worry seeping into his eyes.
“You treat my boy better than I could, okay?” You nodded slowly, more tears slipping down your face.
“Of course.” your voice broke slightly, “I love him.”
“Me too.” His head turned back to his son, “I love you, son.” He pulled JJ in, “Come here, I love you. I love you, son. I love you.”
More than anything, you wanted to call him out. Tell him that if that was true, then he wouldn’t hurt JJ like he did. But whatever this moment was, it wasn’t the right one to do so.
You could hear JJ sniffling, letting his hands find their way onto his father’s back. When he spoke, he sounded like he wanted to be stronger than he felt, his voice thick, pained, struggling. “Love you too, Dad. I’m sorry.”
“Ain’t got nothing to be sorry for.” His father muttered, the sleeping pills pulling him back out of consciousness, slowly as ever. JJ helped him down onto the sofa. “You’re a good boy.” came the murmur.
JJ let out a shaky breath, not sparing you a glance as he pulled the chain from his father’s neck and stepped away. He looked back at you, almost embarrassed to have let you see him in such a vulnerable state. He turned to leave, your voice came out as a hoarse whisper.
“JJ, you don’t always have to be strong, you know that, right?”

CAN I GET chili, wine, spice, sandstone, rust, marigold, butterscotch, sky, & arctic fOR HAWK N HUM???????? i had to stop myself before i sent the whole list chsnxjskxjdj
Chili - Do you like spicy foods?
they prob don’t have much access to spicy food in the Game World but if they did?? hum probably wouldn’t like them. hawk would genuinely not care or be able to tell. “you just ate a raw ghost pepper” and they just stare blankly at you.
Wine - What is your opinion on alcohol? (and does it exist in your world?)
i don’t.....think?? it exists in-game.that i know of. but hawk would physically repel that stuff from hum with raw anger.
Spice - Do you like to cook? Do you cook often?
hawk’s a fighter, hum’s a little baby who should NOT be trusted with heat sources so. no. they probably just go somewhere to get snacks y’know
Sandstone - Who in your life has been the most healing for you?
for hawk it’s hum, for hum it’s hawk,,,, hawk used to really dwell in anger at being discarded for not being hollow with all their siblings, but hum helped them get their mind away from it by sheer force of Babyness. hum used to be VERY timid and frightened by things, and wouldn’t really venture out of the Abyss, but hawk now makes them feel safe enough to explore around
Rust - Have you thought about becoming old? Can you become old? Are you scared of being old? What do you think about elders?
so like i don’t think vessels like. die of old age?? they just get tall like hollow knight did. and i have thought about that a lot. hawk thinks about it offhandedly once in a while, but doesn’t fear it or anything. hum just doesn’t really ponder it at the moment. as for elders, the only “older” sibling they’ve encountered is the hollow knight, and they felt really bad for him given the circumstances, but they still love him because he’s still their sibling bro. basically it’s like hawk goes “if i am bigger, older...i can carry....hum more.....I Want To Age Now”
Marigold - What types of flowers are in your setting? Do you have a favorite?
[i don’t think any of the flowers have a specific name????] greenpath has TONS of flowers and hum is in their GLORY there!!! all different colors and shapes and sizes. they especially like any purple flowers because it’s the same color as their and hawk’s cloaks! hawk’s pretty indifferent about it but won’t tell hum no.
Butterscotch - Is there candy in the world you live in? If so, do you have a favorite one?
hum would LOVE candy if they had it. if it was pretty-looking they might even just hoard it to sort out and look at from time to time, like pretty stones. hum would really like having sweets basically,,,,hawk would like them too just as something to indulge in once in a while they’d probably find them more to give straight to hum.
Sky - What is your favorite time of the day?
hallownest is underground so they don’t get to see times of day much? but with the radiance being..the radiance. they’d probably like nighttime better. no light, more abyss-like, it’d be comforting to them.
Arctic - Do you prefer warm or cool weather?
they both prefer cooler weather!! where it’s breezy and it makes their cloaks flap and hum’s scarf flops around that’s where they THRIVE. the breeze makes hawk feel alive, hum likes to pretend they’re flyin

34: Who/what was your last dream about?
Hmm… I rarely remember my dreams, just lemme think back…
Oh yeah, a couple weeks ago, I dreamed that opening scene of the first episode of Friends where they’re kinda introducing the characters, they’re all hanging out at the coffee house, but with my IRL friends in their places. It’s actually a recurring dream and I think it means I watch too much Friends.
62: What makes you happy?
A summer breeze through soft, green grass. Dandelions. The sounds of a babbling brook or a water fountain. Bare feet digging their toes in the soft mud of the creek at my grandpa’s farm. Helicopter seeds. The four deer that hang out behind my building at night. The colors of a deep sunset. The night sky on a clear evening.
My grandma’s chili. Going to her house to eat it and spending time with my family watching whatever sitcom my grandparents have been watching.  Playing board games with my family and friends. Opening a good bar of dark chocolate and getting that first whiff of the rich flavor that awaits. When someone buys a treat specially because they knew you liked it. Bonfires and s’mores.
Having one of my great grandma’s scotcharoos at every family or church event because she makes them for every single one. Playing the white elephant gift exchange with other relatives even though we all end up with crap we don’t want except for the two people that managed to snag alcohol or beef jerky or candy.
My cats - Ninja, the sweet and soft fattie that’s kind of a dick to other cats but lovely to every person ever; Siz, the orange stripey asshat that Mom wouldn’t let me name Kyo; and Nixi, the black-and-white little lady that was temporarily named Mootah but didn’t have near the personality to fill that name.
Watching anime with my mom. Obsessing over Nalu. Getting praise for the things I’ve created, be it fanfiction, artwork, or what-have-you. Listening to music and doing nothing at all. The satisfaction of beating a boss or figuring out a puzzle after the longest time of being stuck on it. Watching Jack and Mark and Pewds freak out at stuff. The excitement of seeing a long-left fanfiction get updated. The comforting feeling of watching a sitcom or movie for the umpteenth time. Watching a Ghibli or Disney movie and getting caught up in the absolute magic even after the hundredth viewing. Buying a new piece of merch and being able to yell about how awesome it is.
Impromptu Disney karaoke. Singing in the car with friends. The joy of finding a new song to add to the playlist. Hearing a song you love and bursting out into singing no matter how tone-deaf you are.
Playing Barbies and My Little Pony with my little sisters. Getting construction-paper cards covered with scribbles and oblong hearts and whatever stickers they had laying around.
Playing video games with one group of my little brothers and my dad. Trading Pokemon cards with the brothers even though I’ve stopped caring as much for a couple years now. Beating my youngest in that group of brothers at Smash Brothers and wiping the smug look off his face. Having in-depth conversations about games we like that make us seem like maybe we spend too much time on screens.
Talking to my almost-same-aged sister about anything and everything when she’s actually online for once. Having her tease me about corn because I live in the midwest.
Reacting to my stepmom’s random Facebook tags of pickle popsicles because she knows I love pickles. Seeing a fresh jar of pickled okra and a big tub of Nutella in the fridge and cupboard every time I visit for the summer because she knows I love those, too.
Coloring and playing with stickers with another chunk of my little brothers. Watching one of them suck at Mario but get so excited because he managed to get past the piranha plant in the first level of Mario Bros. 3. Watching the other one walk right off a cliff and say “Uh-oh!”
Playing Dr. Mario with my mom because she’s been obsessed with that game since we got the NES Classic for Christmas. Watching her get frustrated at me when I beat her and then force me to play again so she can win and then have her frustrated if I purposefully lose because I’m sick of playing.
Seeing my stepdad pose whatever new action figure he’s gotten last on his shelf that doesn’t seem like it can hold a single one more.
My irl friends’ group chat, where I can yell about whatever anime thing is going on that nobody understands. The memes we share. The comfort of having a group of people who care about me gathered in one place where we can share our grievances, excitement, and despair.
Seeing my Tumblr friends appear on my dash. Being tagged in some mundane post or tag game. Having random conversations in the notes of a post. Using asks to be weird and fun with each other.
Having something to be happy about.

agent andy’s super secret, super special, super spy romance-love-extravaganza mission! (andy dwyer)
Tumblr media
(this was not really a request, but just a spur-of-the-moment work! it’s dedicated to my lovely friend @regrettablewritings!)
(the basic plot is Andy doing what he does best- being goofy and loveable! but this time, in pursuit of a lovely lady friend’s attentions! will he succeed? will he fail? will he eat chili dogs? find out below!)
(warnings: none!)
yes, you're lovely, with your smile so warm and your cheeks so soft there is nothing for me, but to love you and the way you look tonight you look hot tonight...
Andy likes a lot of things. Top five favorite things in the world? Well, that list depends on what day you ask him, when in the day you ask him, how hungry he is, what the last TV show he watched is, if he’s seen any cool dogs that day-
To say the least, Andy is both the most fickle and most loyal man in all of Pawnee. His tastes are both constant and assured while also shifting with the rapidity of the winds of a hurricane. He’s all over the place, like a hyperactive puppy in a room full of chew toys.
But the one thing he consistently likes, always, all the time, every day, every night, and every evening in-between is the girl who works as an intern in the Pawnee Municipal Hall of Records.
Her office is on the second floor and Andy likes to pretend to have a “shoe shine-ist appointment” with someone in the city clerk’s office so he can have a reason to wander up to the second floor and walk past the door to the room where she works.
Today is a Wednesday, which means Andy has his lucky boxers on from when the Colts won against the Cowboys, and his special blue-checkered flannel shirt which his mother told him makes him look “adult for once”, which is a very nice compliment, in his opinion. Before heading upstairs, he stands in front of the bathroom mirror in the men’s room and combs his hair over as neatly as he can with his big hands, smiling at himself.
He has a Food And Stuff grocery bag with him which rests on the lip of the sink as he finishes slicking his unruly hair into place, and he clears his throat in the mirror, practicing his most adult, suave smile; the one where all his teeth are visible but not in a creepy way, and one eyebrow is raised in what he believes to be a seductive manner. He makes a small growl between his teeth and practices what he’s going to say to the girl.
“Why hello-oo, my lady,” he drawls, bowing slightly in the mirror. “You’re looking very… lovesome today.” Nice, he thinks to himself. Sexy, but not too sexy.
“May I ask for you- thou-” he corrects himself- “-To join me uponth this, um… evening… to dinner?”
As he’s trying to formulate what he’ll do when she answers him, a stall door behind him opens and Ben walks out, looking at Andy with confusion written into his furrowed brow. Andy blushes, a little embarrassed, and glares at Ben.
“Bro,” he chides, “You can’t just walk in on me while I’m practicing!”
“But I- I was in here before-” Ben stumbles over himself, looking around in flustered panic, then seems to give up with a sigh. “Yeah, sorry, didn’t mean to burst your bubble there, Andy. Go ahead, pretend I was never here.”
“Well, I can’t really do that, seeing as how I can still see you and I remember you being here so… now I have to wipe my brain and start all over.” Andy turns back to the mirror and watches Ben leave, exasperatedly mumbling to himself as he walks out into the hallway.
When the room is finally clear, Andy stands up in the mirror and takes one last look at himself. He looks at his beard- thankfully, he trimmed it last week so it’s not scraggly or full of Cheetos particles (well, at least, not as many Cheeto particles as before)- and then looks at his face. He looks into his own hazel eyes, the ones that squint a little but still seem so wide and excited. He flashes himself a giddy smile when he thinks about what he’s about to do, and his whole aura seems to grow brighter.
He feels the warm, glowy feeling inside his stomach and chest, the one that tingles down into his fingertips and toes and a little into his butt; the feeling that makes his heart feel like he’s just watched the Colts win the Superbowl, or just played a great show with Mouse Rat. The feeling in his heart that he gets when he thinks about her, and the way she looks when she smiles back at him, or how she gets so focused on her files at her desk and her eyebrows knit together in that cute way.
Deciding that he’s ready, Andy nods at himself in the mirror and says his last words of the pep talk he’s been giving himself in his head.
“You got this, Dwyer. And if you don’t, then Burt Macklin’s got it. And if he doesn’t got it, then, uhm, Johnny Karate’s got it. And if he- oh, nevermind. You’ve got this.”
He grins wide, then ducks out of the bathroom, grabbing his Food And Stuff bag as he makes for the stairs, heart pitter-pattering as frantically as it does when he’s done too many jumping jacks or tried to eat too many hamburgers at once. Reaching the top of the steps, Andy takes a deep breath, both to calm himself and because he did actually get a little winded. Once reassured of his ability to breathe, Andy makes his way to the door to the Hall of Records.
Stopping just before the door, Andy peeks his head, nose resting on the edge of the doorframe in what he thinks is a sneaky, subtle spying position. He can see her clear as day, and the sight of her brings an unintentional smile to his face and makes his childlike heart flutter happily.
She is illuminated from behind by the open windows, the ones streaming in the summer sunlight and warm breeze. A portable fan sits on the corner of her desk, blowing cool air onto her face and stirring up with wispy hairs that frame her pretty eyes, and Andy makes a happy sigh to himself when she adjusts her seat in her chair, turning so that he can see more of her face.
Her eyes are focused on an open file on her desk, one that she is tracing over with a highlighter, and Andy follows the movements of her hands with rapt attention, forgetting his awkward stance in the doorway. He instead watches her do all her little things, the tiny, miniscule motions that would go unnoticed to anyone that didn’t absolutely, wholeheartedly, entirely love her.
He notices how her fingers tap on the bridge of the highlighter. He notices how her other hand supports her neck, loosely rubbing at the baby hairs at the back of her head as she gives herself a small neck massage. He notices the movement of her eyes and the blinking of her lashes, and how her lips part when she breathes. He notices the tapping of her practical-shoed feet under the desk, and how her ankles cross to keep her comfortable in the office chair. Andy sees it all, and tucks it away in the special part of his brain that never forgets.
Andy may have been called a lot of things- things like birdbrained, a goldfish, a dumb sack of rocks- but he does remember things. Important things. Like the 1992 lineup for the Indianapolis Indians. And all the police procedures he’d read about. And his dog’s birthday. And this girl’s middle name, favorite foods, the way she takes her coffee (and how she takes her tea on the days when coffee makes her feel sick), and the movies she wants to see this summer.
He remembers everything about her because it matters to him. All the other stuff that he forgets? Bah, that’s stuff that he doesn’t care about. But all these teeny-tiny things about her mean the world to him, so he will never, ever forget them.
Just as he’s about to make his happy, lovestruck smile as he remembers the first time they’d ever spoken, she looks up from her work and meets his eye. And he’s a goner. He grins at her, making a wave as he silently mouths “watch this!”
Which is when he tucks himself in to do an army roll down the hall, moving across the doorway without entering. He hears her sit up and lean across the desk, calling “Andy?” nervously. He reaches into his grocery bag and grabs the first item: a paper airplane.
From his position on his stomach on the floor, Andy sticks his head back into the doorway and squints one eye as he lines up the paper airplane, then tosses it right at her desk, grinning wildly. He waits and watches her catch it, then rolls back out of her line of view.
“Andy, what’s-” “SHH!”
He rolls back in only to hold his finger over his lips, playfully shushing her. He points at the airplane then motions for her to open it up, smiling the whole time.
“We can’t talk,” he whispers. “The scene’s been compromised by Russian agents!”
She blinks at him, then smiles, rolling her eyes but nodding along, opens the airplane. Andy waits to watch her reaction, nervous butterflies bursting in his stomach. Her eyes scan over the page, reading over his messy scribble in Sharpie that reads “Do You Accept This Mission, Secret Agent Codename: Beautiful Mess?”
When she looks up, Andy feels his face get hot, and his armpits feel sweaty, and suddenly he wishes he was a million miles away, not laying here on the dusty tiles of the second floor of the Pawnee City Hall building. But then she smiles and nods, giving him a silent thumbs up, and he grins, floating on cloud nine.
He fishes into his bag and grabs the hard plastic of a CD case, then slides it across the floor to her. She stops it with her shoe and leans down to grab it from under her desk, reading the label he’s put on it.
“PLAY ME,” screams the CD. She pops it out of the case and slips it into the CD-ROM port on her office computer, eyeing him with a wry smile on her lips. He grins back, watching her for even the slightest hint of her feelings.
She clicks her mouse and opens the program to play the CD, and out of her speakers comes Andy’s own voice, blasting as he had leaned too close to the microphone.
“Agent Beautiful Mess,” Andy mumbles in his most serious spy voice, “I have a very important mission for you. A VIP mission. Very Important… Pizza… (no, shit),” he had whispered. “(What’s a good P word, Derek?)” A second voice from elsewhere in the room at the time of recording chimed in. “Pepperoni.” “No, a spy word!”
Andy blushes as he realizes that he did not edit his conversation with Derek out of the recording that he has just gifted to the girl he has a massive, huge, soul-smashing crush on. But as the embarrassment floods his face, Andy watches hers, and sees that she doesn’t look annoyed, or pissed off, or bored.
She looks… happy.
She starts to giggle, covering her mouth with one hand as she listens to Andy and Derek bicker back and forth about the best word that starts with P to include in the description. After about two minutes of unresolved sniping, Andy gave up and went back to his original intent in the recording.
“ANYWAY,” he announced. “The mission is… to gather all the tools from Agent Jean Claude Van Damme- that’s not the real Jean Claude Van Damme, by the way, but the codename for me- and then accomplish the mission that will be handed to you in the final tool. Good luck… this message will self destruct in five… four… three… two… one… KA-BLOOSH, BUH-SHEW, BLAM BLAM BLAM, BBBBRRRR-”
After the recording stops playing Andy’s homemade explosion sound effects, the girl behind the desk looks at Andy, shaking her head playfully, a massive smile plastered to her face. That smile makes Andy feel dizzier than a case of shoeshine head.
He grins back at her, as happy as a kindergartener at recess. She motions for him to slide her the next “tool to her mission” and he happily reaches into the Food And Stuff bag, pulling out a bag of Skittles and a bag of Starbursts.
Andy throws them to her, both bags managing to land on her desk. They are labeled “PART ONE” and “PART TWO”, and the Starbursts bag has a sticky note on it.
“COMBINE ONE SECRET PILL WITH TWO TABLETS TO CREATE THE POWER SERUM,” reads the note.
She starts laughing, and Andy can’t help but join her. He ignores the annoyed stares of strangers walking past him in the hallway, focused only on her happy smile, and the way her voice sounds as it bounces up and down with joy. When she stops laughing, Andy points at the bags and uses his hands to gesture to her the act of opening and eating, so she does it.
She takes out two Starbursts and a Skittle and smushes them together in the right way, making a little sandwich with the Skittle in the middle, properly forming “Andy’s Mouth Surprise”. When she’s completed it, she holds it up and wiggles it at him, showing him her accomplishment. He gives her an enthusiastic thumbs up, then signs to her to eat it, making oversized chewing motions with puffed out cheeks and an exaggerated swallow.
Following suit, she eats the candy, taking her time chewing it and choking a little as she laughs at Andy’s ridiculous expressions. When she’s done, she holds her arms up and flexes like a WWE wrestler, showing off her guns. Andy silently applauds, and when she winks at him, his stomach explodes with lovey-dovey fireworks.
Andy crawls into a kneeling position and reaches into the bag for the final object, throwing it at her feet with reckless abandon. God, he hopes with works. He crosses his fingers and watches her confusedly look down at the mass of feathers and hot glue currently on her desk.
He has hot glued two plastic birds from Food And Stuff together, the tips of their wings fused as if they are holding hands. To the legs of one of the birds he has tied a note, which she unspools and reads, her face going from incredulous smile to a softer, more surprised expression.
The tension comes back into Andy’s muscles, and he can feel his chest and stomach and arms and palms start to sweat and itch with anxiety. The bad feelings make him sweaty, and he’s so worried that she’ll say no that he doesn’t know what to do except crouch in the doorway, forgetting his superspy routine to just watch her.
His fingers fidget with the drawstrings of his shoeshine apron as he remembers the words he’s written for her.
“Agent Beautiful Mess:
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is…
To go…
With Agent Jean Claude Van Damme…
On a romantical date…
Today, or tomorrow, or whatever works for your schedule. Agent Van Damme is very flexible and has, like, nothing to do after work, so he can do whatever you’re down for whenever.
Sincerely, love,
Agent JCVD.
(P.S. this is Andy.)”
She’s too quiet, Andy worries, picking at the loose threads of the apron. She’s not reacting or saying anything. She’s just re-reading the words, and Andy can feel his once-light heart sinking to the bottom of his sneakers. He should’ve known. No girl like that- smart, pretty, kind, funny, and super hot and also good at pretty much everything she does- would ever look at a stooge like him. And he’s not even a funny stooge, like Larry, Moe and Curly. He’s just a regular stooge.
But then she picks up the fused birds, admiring them for a moment before gently kissing the head of one of the birds. Oddly enough, it’s the bird that Andy thought of as himself, making the other bird her. She sets the birds down and scoots back her chair from the desk, standing up, and Andy stands up too, nervous.
He says nothing as she comes up to him, and as he stands at his full height of 6’2”, he suddenly realizes how small she feels next to him. And he realizes how much he likes that. Andy wants to pick her up and carry her in his arms in a big, tight hug: one that would never let her go.
She looks up at him with her soft, sweet eyes, and Andy swallows a thick lump in his throat, his breath coming in shorter.
“Are you mad?”
Looking taken aback, the girl Andy has fallen for puts a hand to her chest, shaking her head.
“No, no, Andy, why would you think that?”
“Well, you didn’t say anything and when people don’t say anything I get really worried and then I start talking a lot because I feel like I have to so that other people don’t get worried too and I really want you to like me because I really like you in a romantic kinda way and I wanna hold your hand and-”
She presses up on her tiptoes and puts her plush lips to his, and Andy suddenly can’t remember anything in the world except that she feels exactly like how he’d hoped she would. She’s supple and smooth and smells amazing (a little sweaty from the summer heat, a little floral from her shampoo, and a lot like sugar-fruits from the candy), and her mouth tastes like Starbursts and Skittles and his daydreams.
When they break, her hands remain on his chest and his grip her waist, his head spinning faster than the tilt-a-whirl at the county fair that he’d thrown up on back in eighth grade. He can’t breathe, but instead just stands there, frozen.
One of his hands moves up to her face, thick thumb parsing over the hill of her cheek as he cups her jaw. His fingers touch her hair and he stares at her, mouth hanging open. He can’t stop studying her face, because he doesn’t want to forget a single instant of this amazing, life-changing moment. He wants to remember every detail; he wants to remember every hair on her head, every spot on her face, every lash around her eyes, every breath out of her. He wants to remember everything in vivid Technicolor forever and ever, and store it away in the special part of his brain that never, ever, ever forgets.
“Andy? Are you- did I upset you?”
Her voice crackles with concern, and Andy’s reverie breaks; he’s been quiet for too long. He’s made her worry, just like he worried over her. Damn.
“No way. No way, not ever, no- I- would you- can you do that again?”
She giggles, putting her own hand on his beardy cheek and scratching it softly (in the back of his mind, Andy imagines that this must be why dogs love being petted). Looking up at him, she nods and stands up on her tiptoes again, hovering just over his mouth.
“You kiss me this time,” she murmurs. “Just so I know I’m not, like, forcing myself on you.”
“Wouldn’t mind even if you did,” Andy replies dreamily.
And then he kisses her back, one hand holding her face and pulling her in close, one hand on her waist to keep her steady and stable. He doesn’t care that they’re in a government building and could very likely get scolded hardcore for this. He doesn’t care that anyone could walk by and see them. Hell, he hopes someone does, so that way everyone knows: Andy got the girl of his dreams. He’s got her, right there, in his arms, her lips on his lips, and he doesn’t intend to let go.
They part for a second time, and Andy feels dizzy, but in a good way, like after he’s taken medicine for his cold and he’s fuzzy and sleepy and warm. He feels contentedly feverish, and like everything in the world makes sense. He feels like he could write a hundred and one love songs and still have ideas for a hundred and one more. Or maybe just a hundred, since two hundred and two love songs is a lot. But he’d love her even more than the words of two hundred and two (give or take) love songs could ever convey.
“So,” he breathes, giggling. “Is that… a yes to the date?”
“Yeah,” she smiles back. “Yeah, it definitely is.”
In that moment, Andy doesn’t need to be a spy, an FBI agent, a ninja or anything else to be happy. He has everything he needs right there in his arms, looking back up at him with the same excited, gleeful glimmer in her eyes.
And, wow, is she beautiful.

One of my short stories
A Little Push
(P.O.V. none, New Mobotropolis)
It is a warm morning in New Mobotropolis as we find two hedgehogs, one blue and one white, walking together towards the chili dog stand for some breakfast.
"Dude I still don't understand what's with you and your obsession with chili dogs?" the white hedgehog named Soler said. The blue hedgehog, named Sonic, only laughed,
"Oh, Soler, Soler, Soler. As long as we've been together and you still can't understand the godly taste of chili dogs. Tisk tisk shame on you my friend." he responded. Soler rolled his eyes,
"I understand that they're good but did we really have to skip out on mom's cooking? You know I love it when she makes those waffles." Soler responded sadly. Sonic only slung an arm around him and gave him his award-winning smile,
"Trust me. A good chili dog in the morning can keep you settled over the good chunk of the day. Now come on we're here." the two hedgehogs walked up to the stand and the guy had his back to them as he was still doing a little prep work.
"Excuse me, good sir. Two of your finest chili dogs please?" Sonic ordered. The guy turned around to show he was a middle-aged black cat that was wearing a white apron, with a blue long sleeved polo shirt. He smiled at the site of the two hedgehogs,
"If it isn't Sonic and Soler. I can see you love my chili dogs so much there the first thing you two eat in the mornings huh?"
"You know it! Now two of your finest please." Sonic asked. The guy nodded and went to work making the two dogs. He quickly made them, placed them in holders and placed them on the counter for the two.
"There ya go, boys. Two of my finest dogs! And don't worry about payment there on the house this morning." he said with pride. Sonic visibly brightened,
"Alright! You're the best! Thanks!" The two there food and walked off from the stand enjoying their breakfast. The two ate in silence as they enjoyed their food.
"Man fis is fo good!" Sonic said with a mouthful. Soler swallowed,
"Don't eat with your mouth full." He told him. Sonic swallowed and smiled brightly to which all Soler could do was just smiled and shake his head. The two finished their food and threw away the wrappers as they continued their walk. Sonic burped satisfied as he rubbed his stomach,
"Those were some good dogs, wouldn't ya say?" Sonic asked.
"They were alright man, I'm just glad to have a full tummy." Soler responded. The two continued on in silence as they digested their food. After a little ways of silence, Soler decided to break it,
"So to break the silence. How've things been with the princess lately?" he asked. Sonic looked at him questionably,
"Things are fine between me and Sal why?" he asked.
"Oh no reason just you two are so 'on again, off again' I just wanna keep in the loop." he answered. Sonic chuckled,
"Yeah right as if you're just trying your best to not show you're jealous huh?" Sonic responded. Soler faked laughed loud,
"HA HA HA! You are one funny hedgehog to think I'd ever be jealous of you blue boy."
"Oh come on it's' alright to be jealous that the ladies like me more than you." Sonic retorted. The two hedgehogs had walked out of the city out to the meadows in front. They both took seats and relaxed on the grass before continuing,
"Dude whats there to be jealous of. I mean from what I've learned and seen, you're again off again with a princess, you dated a traitor, and I think you had a thing with Mina at some point. Oh and there's Amy who's your dedicated fan girl. So yeah I'm good." Soler responded laying down in the grass.
"Well It has it's ups and downs sure but like they say it's to have love and lose than to never have loved at all." Sonic replied sitting down next to him. Sole gave him a surprised look,
"Hmm never would've thought you would actually know a line like that. But nah I'm good."
"Oh come on there has to be someone you like. How about Amy? You two date it'll get her off my back."
"Yeah no. Me and her cool but I think she secretly doesn't like me all that well."
"What makes you say that?"
"Well she told me one day, and I quote, "You keep taking my darling Sonic away from me. I hate you." end quote. Yeah, I think I'm more like competition than a love interest." he joked. Sonic chuckled,
"I'm sure she was just joking."
"Yeah I know she was but still."
"Yeah. So that crosses Amy off the list, what about Rouge? I see you two flirt all the time whenever we meet up with Shadow and them." Sonic asked.
"Oh no not that devil woman! It looks like flirting to you but she keeps playing with my emotions with her feminine charms and ways. I swear the next time we meet she will not get me again!" Soler declared loudly. Sonic only chuckled quietly,
I think he can't handle her teasing is all. Sonic thought, "Well if the bats of the list then who is it that you have a thing for? There has to be one." Soler actually took a few moments to think on it. It was quiet for a while as the wind blew and Soler thought. Sonic had begun tapping his foot impatiently,
"I'm waiting?" he groaned.
"Well excuse me for actually thinking about it like someone suggested." Soler retorted
"Well, you got anyone in mind yet? Come on name her and I'll help give you a little push how about that." Sonic added.
"Hmm don't think you'd want to do that but if I had to think about it then the girl that comes close would have to be Sally actually." he said. He paused to look at Sonic face which was a mix of emotions.
"Dude before you freak, you know I wouldn't even attempt a move on Sally because I consider you my brother and bro code doesn't allow that without permission. And second, even if we did get together I don't think I could stand seeing you're jealous face whenever were together. Remember how you reacted when Monkey Khan and her were a thing. You hated him for it and I don't want you hating me over a girl." Soler explained. Sonic straightened his face,
"First off I didn't like it when they were together because Khan literally tried to kill me when we first met and our relationship has been rocky ever since. So seeing them together sucked and I didn't approve of it. And second if its Sal then I'll still give you a little helping hand. I mean we're not together or anything and she's her own person so whoever she wants to date she can date em." Sonic responded. That caught Soler all off guard as he looked at him stunned,
"Wait really?' he asked to which Sonic nodded, "And you wouldn't be upset or anything?" Sonic shook his head,
"Listen, dude, I really want you to get back out there on the dating since especially since it's been so long. Besides if things don't work then things don't work, no harm no foul." Sonic answered. Soler was really stunned by how mature Sonic was being,
"Wow uh, thanks, man that's very kind of you." Sonic smiled proudly,
"No problem. Now do want to try and go for her or not?" he asked. Soler was quiet again unsure,
"I don't know man. I'll have to think on it and tell you." he responded. Sonic sighed,
"Alright then, I'm all ears for whenever you make up your mind then."
"Thanks." It got silent between the two as they went back to watching the sky in peace. Soler's mind was in thought at their conversation and on if Sonic was serious or not. He closed his eyes taking in the breeze and grass to help his thinking. Some time must have passed cause the time he opened them it was at Sonic's voice and the sun was higher in the sky,
"Hey what time is it?" he asked. Soler looked to his communicator for time,
"It's a little bit before noon. Why?" at hearing the time Sonic stood and brushed himself off,
"Oh it's just Tails and I are going out adventuring today. We're taking the tornado and everything, just like old times." Sonic answered. Soler nodded,
"Yeah, you two deserve a bro day. Tell him I said hi when you get there."
"Sure thing. Later!" and with a dash, Sonic was gone leaving Soler alone with his thoughts. Soler laid there watching the clouds go by in the blue sky in his thoughts and just relaxing in general on such a great day. He soon heard the sound of rotors and saw the tornado flying overhead, going to who knows where. He smiled at the sight,
Glad those two get to spend some time together. They deserve it. He thought. Soler got so relaxed he started to yawn feeling drowsy.
Guess I'm still a bit tired. He thought. He then slowly started to close his eyes feeling the soft grass under him feeling completely at ease with everything as he drifted off to sleep.
Soler was still lying on the ground asleep peacefully in dream land. The breeze though had other plans for the napping hedgehog as it picked up a blade of grass and floated it right on his nose. The sudden sensation of the grass made him scrunch up his face. The grass blade stayed there and started to wrinkle in place making his face scrunch up more and his nose tingle until...*ACHOO!*. The sneeze made Soler swipe the blade of grass off his nose. Being woken up he gave out a mighty yawn and stretched. He lazily opened an eye to see it was nearly sunset now as he's slept the day away.
Hmm well, today's been well spent, I might as well doze back off. He thought, but that thought was interrupted by the sound of footsteps.
"So I see you've made the most of the day." Soler opened one eye and looked to see Sally Acorn (Post Genesis Wave) looking down at him.
"Oh hello princess, and yes today has been well spent." he replied. Sally rolled her eyes and smirked,
"Well mind if I sit and enjoy it with you?" she asked.
"Not at all, there's more than enough grass for everyone." he responded and She took a seat next to him. The two were silent for the next few moments just enjoying the day. Sally looking up at the sky and Soler relaxing with his eyes closed.
"So what are you doing all the way out here?" she asked breaking the silence. Soler opened one eye to look at her,
"Well this morning Sonic and got some chili dogs for breakfast and after we sorta wondered out here and just talked for a while before he had to go." Soler answered. Sally giggled,
"Yeah sounds like Sonic to eat chili dogs first thing in the morning. But what made you stay out here after he left?"
"Well I was thinking over our conversation and the grass was so comfy I just didn't feel like getting up. So I dozed off and took a sweet relaxing nap." Soler responded rubbing the grass. That made her giggle more,
"Yeah and that sounds like you." she said. The entered another silence this one a tad more awkward as they didn;t know what to say next. That was until Sally spoke up again,
"So what were you talking about that had you thinking so much?" she asked. Soler hesitated at that question remembering his and Sonic last interaction and not knowing if he should just tell the truth or make something up. He glanced at her and could see her looking at him patiently awaiting his response. He internally sighed,
"Well, we were talking about girls really. The conversation turned more towards who I like by the end though, so ya know just guy stuff." he responded slightly quickly. That peaked her interest,
"Oh really. So is there any girl you like?" she asked. Soler again paused thinking on how to answer, but him knowing Sally for being smart enough to sniff out a lie his best bet was the truth.
"Well the girl I said I like was you actually." he said. He looked to see her start to blush slightly and look back up at the sky,
"Hehe don't sweat It, Sal.' Soler said quickly sitting up now, "I know you probably see me as annoying and stuff. So don't sweat it." he said with a smile. Sally was quiet as she looked up at the sky that was now entering twilight with the setting sun. It stayed silent as Soler was starting to dread telling her the truth.
"It's okay that you like me." she finally said surprising him. She smiled as she looked at him their eyes locked,
"Actually you're wrong that I find you annoying. Well almost, when I first met you I thought you were going to be like another Sonic, a smart mouth loose cannon who doesn't like to think about his actions. But as I got to know you and see how you acted my opinion started to change. It changed, even more, when you came clean to all of us about your past and Luna I started to admire you actually." she said. Soler was silent was he listened to her words,
"I admired you because you keep a smile on your face even after what you've been through. I mean the strength to do something like that alone is more than I have. So it's okay if you say you like me I'm not against it in the slightest. In fact-" she quickly closed the gap between them and gave him a kiss on the cheek making him blush and her own face redden,
"I wouldn't be against it all." she said. Soler was stunned beyond belief and almost couldn't believe this was happening his mind gone. She giggled at his expression went back to looking at the becoming night sky as it filled with stars. Soler still quiet just sat there looking at the smiling girl, is brain gone. So with his brain he just let his instincts take over.
"Hey Sal." he said causing her to look back over to him,
"Yes?" he gently cupped her face with his hand and brought her in for a kiss. The kiss lasted for a few moments and in those few moments, everything was bliss and calm as if nothing was wrong in that space. When they broke apart Soler's mind had finally caught up to what had happened and his eyes widen as his face reddened madly.
"Oh, my...uh...Sal, I'm...sorry I didn't! Uhh." Soler stammered as he jumped away slightly. Sally only giggled with her face flushed too,
"It's uh fine really don't worry about it." she responded. She then stood up quickly and brushed herself off,
"I think I should get going. It is getting late out." She then said. Soler still flustered justed nodded,
"Yeah. yeah, it is getting late. Getting home would be the best option." he responded quickly,
"Yeah, you going home soon?"
"Oh uh no, no, I think I'll stay out here a little longer ya know, enjoy the night." She just nodded,
"Ok don't stay out here and catch a cold now. Night." she said walking away,
"Night." he responded back watching her leave. Sally took a few steps away from him before stopping,
"Soler. If you ever come to a decision no matter what it is I'd like to know." she started before turning back to look at him with a smile,
"Cause I think I liked the preview." she said with a wink before walking off. Soler watched her walk off his heart beating fast and his mind in a loop over what just happened. But then one thought popped into his head which was louder than the others,
"Oh my god! I just kissed Sonic's on again off again girlfriend! What am I going to do!" he screamed and went on in a rant to himself on what he was going to do. But little ways off a blue hedgehog had seen the whole scene and a smirk was on his face,
"See I told ya. All you needed was a little push." he said before walking off leaving Soler.
(Also Soler is my OC)
