This unique piece was created for a group exhibition of diptychs. As an art term a diptych is an artwork consisting of two pieces or panels, that together create a singular art piece. These can be attached together or presented adjoining each other. In medieval times, panels were often hinged so that they could be closed and the artworks protected. Rather than show two works side by side I opted to integrate them into one by representing a woman’s earthly existence as a portrait in the flesh with a two dimensional Victorian era photograph and then her afterlife as a three dimensional ribcage. These were both set behind an antique hinged train window and screen with the visor turned upside down into a shelf for the hourglass that tells the time passed between them. Myths answer timeless questions and serve as a compass for each generation. Legends are told to explain the world and our mortal experience by providing hope, heroes and direction. Unlike fairy tales, each are reflections of our reality. They are warnings and promises, laments as celebrations. In my 2018 Myths & Legends series, conceptualized with exhibition partner Joshua Coffy @giftprolific, I reinvented mythical themes and characters with salvaged, found-objects. Much like the legends I portrayed- the materials themselves provide a unique perspective of our disposable past and the enlightened transformation we are capable of. Only the chol (phoenix) abstained from eating it. So, death was decreed upon all animals except the phoenix, which was granted eternal life. Some say that a phoenix lives a thousand years, at the end of which a fire issues forth from its nest and burns it up. All that remains is an egg, from which the phoenix grows new limbs and lives again The Phoenix is a symbol of good luck, harmony, peace, balance, and prosperity. This magical creature represents fire and passion – the flames of true inspiration. "The Way Out is the Way" (aka the Minotaur ) was one in a series of six assemblages I created for the conceptual 2017 Myths & Legends duo exhibition (with artist friend Joshua Coffy of @giftprolific) at Secession Art & Design. This piece later was won and acquired by a collector at ArtSpan's 2018 Benefit Auction. Legend has it that the Minotaur was the offspring of a magnificent snow-white bull and that of Pasiphaë, the wife of King Minos of Crete. Being the unnatural offspring of a woman and a beast, the Minotaur grew to become brutal and ferocious. An enormous labyrinth was constructed to contain him. Legend has it that the beautiful white, winged horse known as Pegasus carries Zeus' thunderbolts through the sky. Pegasus is a goodhearted, gentle creature, somewhat naive but always eager to help. Everywhere the winged horse struck his hoof to the earth, a bountiful spring burst forth.
