the stars that dwarf their number like ash rising

with the heat in spiraling drifts of dark matter?

Or are they recycled into soul substance that

re-lights like a pilot flame in the cosmic oven

from which our original imprints were formed?

Or do they power the sun itself like a generator

fired by the energy of gazillion dreams that

never came true, the rage and ambition and

heart-grinding love for others that superglues

one human to another like the nuclear bonds

within every atom, molecule, and solar system?

Or is the answer D, as always, all of the above?

This was an early assemblage I created in 2012 for my first gallery show "Lost & Found" curated by Matt McKinley at @arcgallerysf. In it the child figure is racing the ripples of time with one leg extended towards life and one arm reaching back to the afterlife. The snowflake's eye opens and closes when spun around on its pivot and the hurdy gurdy music box in the lower right corner plays "A Few of My Favorite Things" when its crank is turned. I wish I had a video of all these interactive aspects in action but ten years ago I did not consider that IG would pay favor to Reels. Ce la Vie. What has land, territory, space, got to do with death? What has territory got to do with life either, other than life generally wants it, along with other things. But the prisoner, the slave, is stripped of all territory yet continues to live. Oh, ‘land’ meaning ‘domain’? Same problem. No ‘realms’ of living and dead; no layers of in-between heaven and hell. That’s a story. There’s life, like a skin. When it suffers a pinprick there is a little point of death quickly retaken, healed over by life. Maybe there’s a scar if the gash was big enough, but usually not. In all of Nature, there is never nothing. Only life, like a skin, stretched across a tambou of matter, if you like; beaten, and sounding like itself.
