George mentioned the coming of age of Arya in Braavos in the context of how a writer had to discipline himself to write only as many chapters as were necessary to serve the story, saying that what Arya was dealing with in Braavos could make a worthy young adult novel in it's own right.
- George R.R. Martin, So Spake Martin (2010)
Arya is a lot of fun to write about. I could write a whole novel about Arya in Braavos.
- George R.R. Martin, Chicon 7 (2012)
I’ve been following Arya over in the city of Braavos and that’s a setting that I’ve become really interested in. It’s a different dynamic because it’s more like Venice, or Genoa in their height. There’s a different aspect on history because it’s more interested in traders and merchants rather than kings and princes. It could be a great background for a novel.
- George R.R. Martin, Irish Film Institute (2019)

Arya and the Stranger
Good news, I figured out a way to pack even more unnecessary, extremely tedious to color details into my art :)
No i've just been obsessed with these old russian fairytale illustrations for ages and really wanted to try and emulate that style and how it shows so much additional art in the borders of the work. It was really fun to figure out a way to portray the stranger, I wanted to play around a bit with the descriptions we are given without turning them into a standard grim reaper.
Oh, also if you want; you can get a print of this here!

"Ned Stark's Precious Little Girl"
Tumblr media
Arya is a mix of both her parents. But as her story unfolds, with every new chapter and book, Arya has moved beyond her parents and into a far more dynamic character.
Ned was a role model to Arya, she loved him more than almost anyone (she loves Jon most of all). She holds on to Ned's memory now more than any of his children.
Ned is stubborn, quick to anger, loyal to a fault, and deeply devoted to his family to the point where he sacrificed his honor and died for his children.
Both Arya & Ned had a dislike for Southern culture. Which is double odd considering Ned was fostered in the South: That was never truly his place. Whereas Cat and Sansa are very much creatures made for the South.
Treatment of the smallfolk and not judging those lower than their station... That says a lot about their character, something Ned, Lyanna, Arya & Jon have all shown in the books.
Arya & Ned are similar but different as well. Where Ned was lacking, his ability to not see the truth in the lies around him - Arya has developed beyond that point. Ned was too slow and unyielding until it was too late and he died. Cat was to heedless, prideful, and emotional - that cost her life. At the beginning Arya was a mix of both her parents BUT her journey so far has made her grow and develop where her parents had not. By Book 5, Arya is extremely artful and considerate, patient and willing to face the truth in all its ugliness, adaptable and fluid like water - a changeling. That's how she'll survive where her parents did not.
While Sansa is learning how to flirt, organise a glorified party and remain passive and isolated.
Arya lives out in the open, has escaped death and captivity by her own wits, travelled all over Westeros leaving her memory imprinted on the people she met along the way, and her unyielding desire to never be helpless again which brought her to Braavos. The Sealord of Braavos stood up to a King and his dragons and won - all he did was whisper the "faceless men" and King's Landing yielded - that is true power. Arya will return to Westeros having grown in many ways. But like her father and mother, her family will always be her guiding light.
I love how the Northmen constantly connect Arya to Ned and want to fight for them both:
When White Harbour (a place Arya has visited twice with Ned) hears of "Arya Stark" marrying Ramsay.
“Was ever snow so black?” asked Lord Wyman. “Ramsay took Lord Hornwood’s lands by forcibly wedding his widow, then locked her in a tower and forgot her. It is said she ate her own fingers in her extremity…and the Lannister notion of king’s justice is to reward her killer with Ned Stark’s little girl.” - (Davos, A Dance with Dragons)
~*~
As "Arya" suffers in Winterfell, they connect her to Ned:
"The bride weeps," Lady Dustin said, as they made their way down, step by careful step. "Our little Lady Arya." ... What do you think passes through their heads when they hear the new bride weeping? Valiant Ned's precious little girl." ...
"Lady Arya's sobs do us more harm than all of Lord Stannis's swords and spears.
~*~
The northmen want to fight for Arya:
“Even ruined and broken, Winterfell remains Lady Arya’s home. What better place to wed her, bed her, and stake your claim? […] Let Stannis march on us. He is too cautious to come to Barrowton…but he must come to Winterfell. His clansmen will not abandon the daughter of their precious Ned to such as you. - (Reek, A Dance with Dragons)
[…]
Lord Arnolf shoved himself up, a vulture rising from its prey. One spotted hand clutched at his son’s shoulder for support. “We’ll take [Winterfell] for Ned and for his daughter.” - (The Sacrifice, A Dance with Dragons)
~*~
"Winter is almost upon us, boy. And winter is death. I would sooner my men die fighting for the Ned’s little girl than alone and hungry in the snow, weeping tears that freeze upon their cheeks. No one sings songs of men who die like that. As for me, I am old. This will be my last winter. Let me bathe in Bolton blood before I die. I want to feel it spatter across my face when my axe bites deep into a Bolton skull. I want to lick it off my lips and die with the taste of it on my tongue." - (Dance with Dragons)

Might sound strange, but a headcanon I have for Arya Stark is that she's a phenomenonal haggler. Anything this girl buys, the price is coming down. This girl knows the going price of everything in Braavos, and verbally rips into any one with the Trade Tongue if they try to upcharge her, thinking her a clueless traveler. And when she returns to Westeros? You bet nobody is upcharging her there either, she's not paying a penny more than she would in Braavos. Arya Stark gets some of the best Trade deals Winterfell has ever seen, simply because she wears these people down. A piece of Arya Stark will always be a fiery oyster seller, and the North has never economically benefitted more.

Different Roads: The House of Black and White
At the top she found a set of carved wooden doors twelve feet high. The left-hand door was made of weirwood pale as bone, the right of gleaming ebony. In their center was a carved moon face; ebony on the weirwood side, weirwood on the ebony. The look of it reminded her somehow of the heart tree in the godswood at Winterfell. The doors are watching me, she thought. She pushed upon both doors at once with the flat of her gloved hands, but neither one would budge. Locked and barred. "Let me in, you stupid," she said. "I crossed the narrow sea." She made a fist and pounded. "Jaqen told me to come. I have the iron coin." She pulled it from her pouch and held it up. "See? Valar morghulis." The doors made no reply, except to open. ❦ Arya I, A Feast for Crows

Braavosi Hairstyles
Tumblr media
So the braavos is fairly cold so hats and veils, the wealthy wear dark demure colors and their jewelry is made of black pearls and onyx, the lower classes actually dress in brighter more flamboyant colors, yet they lack the embellishments and structure found in the hair accessories of the wealthy.

On one hand, I do want Arya back in Westeros for plot reasons, on the other, Braavos is genuinely my favorite location. It has so many secrets and is so colorful and is such a mirror to Arya as a character.
It's a city of refugees and ex-slaves hidden away until they decided to come out of hiding which will probably mirror Arya's own journey of a child hidden away after escaping what is essentially slavery and coming back stronger. A city full of people which protect but with a lot of secrets (just like Arya).
I really want GRRM to milk it for all it's worth. Give me all of the history and all of the weird secrets and the courtisans and the tradition and all the different languages. I want it all.
I also love that Arya just is thriving even if she is in the middle of an identity crisis..

AGOT, Arya IV
All that Syrio Forel had taught her went racing through her head. […] Quick as a snake. Calm as still water.
TWOW, Mercy
The smell of blood was heavy in her nostrils...or was that her nightmare, lingering? She had dreamed of wolves again, of running […] hard on the scent of prey.
Half-light filled the room, grey and gloomy. Shivering, she sat up in bed and ran a hand across her scalp. Stubble bristled against her palm. I need to shave before Izembaro sees. Mercy, I'm Mercy, and tonight I'll be raped and murdered. Her true name was Mercedene, but Mercy was all anyone ever called her...
Except in dreams. She took a breath to quiet the howling in her heart, trying to remember more of what she'd dreamt, but most of it had gone already. There had been blood in it, though, […] and a tree that watched her as she ran.
[…] Braavos was lost in fog. She could see the green water of the little canal below, the cobbled stone street that ran beneath her building, two arches of the mossy bridge...but the far end of the bridge vanished in greyness, and of the buildings across the canal only a few vague lights remained. She heard a soft splash as a serpent boat emerged beneath the bridge's central arch. "What hour?" Mercy called down to the man who stood by the snake's uplifted tail, pushing her onward with his pole.
The waterman gazed up, searching for the voice. "Four, by the Titan's roar." His words echoed hollowly off the swirling green waters and the walls of unseen buildings.
[…] She had filled her basin from the canal last night before she went to sleep, preferring the brackish water to the slimy green rainwater stewing in the cistern out back. Dipping a rough cloth, she washed herself head to heel, standing on one leg at a time to scrub her calloused feet. After that she found her razor. A bare scalp helped the wigs fit better, Izembaro claimed.
She shaved, […] and slipped a shapeless brown wool dress down over her head. One of her stockings needed mending, she saw as she pulled it up.
[…]
“Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," she sang sadly. […] She would miss her, and she would miss Daena and the Snapper and the rest, even Izembaro […]
She would think about that later, though. Just now, there was no time. I had best run. Mercy still had some lines to say, her first lines and her last, and Izembaro would have her pretty little empty head if she were late for her own rape.

A Dance with Dragons is so funny bc the North is on the brim of a civil war over Arya “Valiant Ned’s precious little girl” Stark and then in the next chapter Arya is chilling in Braavos learning how to be an assassin and warging into cats

In Laboratory of Politics, you speculate that Braavos engaged in large scale piracy. You also mention that in the present day they still capture ships carrying slaves, most recently a Lysene ship. With the Braavos living on a continent where an overwhelming majority of polities practice slavery, do you think the Braavosi still engage in piracy as policy behind the veneer (or justification, if you prefer) of abolitionism?
The Braavosi don't need to engage in piracy now that they're fully operational, so to speak - they can just exert their power to ban slavery in their sphere of influence and enforce that ban through their extremely large and powerful navy, as they did during the wars with Pentos.
Tumblr media
We don't have any evidence of a Braavosi Preventative Squadron that operates in international waters, but we do see that the Braavosi will seize slave ships that sail into Braavosi waters.
However, it wouldn't surprise me if Braavos has some deniable sellsails it uses to harass slavers, especially those who fly the flag of whichever city-state Braavos is looking to keep in check at the moment.

"Ask for Merry. Meralyn is her true name, but everyone calls her Merry, and she is." Merry bought a dozen oysters every time Cat came by the brothel and shared them with her girls. She had a good heart, everyone agreed. "That, and the biggest pair of teats in all of Braavos," Merry herself was fond of boasting.
Cat Of The Canals, A Feast for Crows
Shivering, she sat up in bed and ran a hand across her scalp. Stubble bristled against her palm. I need to shave before Izembaro sees. Mercy, I’m Mercy, and tonight I’ll be raped and murdered. Her true name was Mercedene, but Mercy was all anyone ever called her… Except in dreams. Mercy, The Winds of Winter sample chapter
Nice little parallel here, I'd never picked up on it untill now.
Ever stopped to think this might be the author waving at us telling us Arya is indeed merciful in nature (same as Meralyn is indeed a merry person)?
