The Ravenwood Bulletin
The two Necromancers arrive at their study spot early today. Not because they're brimming with excitement to continue their self-study efforts, but rather to partake in something they once enthusiastically anticipated.
Boris found them an old radio tucked away in a shadowy corner of the library and let them have it. It's made of sandy orange wood and as big as Malorn's head. Him and Duncan spent some time cleaning the thing of all its ancient dust. Rushing up to the table, he can still see the lingering cloud from the other day, a slight gray haze in the dim candlelight.
Malorn and Duncan shove each other out of the way as they try and take a seat in front of the radio, fighting to be the one to turn it on. Beforehand, they'd have to fight with their fellow students to reach the radio. Now it's just them.
Radios were only allowed in the classrooms for the Ravenwood Bulletin, serving as morning announcements and miscellaneous news. Once the Bulletin was over, they'd be turned off and shoved away into some corner until the next day.
But no class was more excited for the radio than the Necromancers. At least, Malorn has never heard any wild stories about the other classes fighting each other to get to the radio, to have the honor of turning it on in front of their fellow classmates, and being its designated guardian until the Bulletin concluded before ceremoniously tucking it into its designated shelf behind the teacher's desk.
Malistaire made it a competition, a daily test of knowledge and skill. It also made sure that all his students were at least there on time for class.
Duncan wins the fight, his hand slapping the power knob and twisting it to 'On'. The radio hums to life with heavy static. Malorn lets out a defeated laugh and gives his friend room to fiddle with the tuning.
"Just like the good old days," he comments. Duncan nods back wordlessly, his concentration fully on the old radio before him.
There was a time at the very start of their educational journey at Ravenwood where it was pure morning chaos. Dark Sprites flew through the air; the only spell any of them knew how to cast at that time. By the end of the day, everyone would walk out still covered in purple fairy dust.
One of the first rivalries to appear amidst the chaos was between Malorn and Duncan. They'd each turn up far too early just to fight over the privilege that was the radio, even if they still had to get through their fellow students later on. There were even some days where the rest of the class would simply stand around and watch them spar.
"Ah!" Duncan exclaims as the radio buzzes with music. Malorn lets out a sigh of relief. The Bulletin will be starting shortly. Side by side, the two Necromancers make themselves comfortable on the bench and leans in close to the radio's tiny speakers.
Finally, the music comes to an end, and Boris' voice rings out, "Good morning, students of Ravenwood! This your morning Ravenwood Bulletin with your host, me! Boris Tallstaff.
"Student news: Let's have a round of applause for Regina Flametalon for getting first place in the annual Ravenwood Science Fair. Her steam golem really stole the show."
Humoring the radio voice, Malorn claps his hands twice to celebrate.
Duncan just rolls his eyes. "This is the third year in a row."
"Maybe you need to get into engineering, then," Malorn replies. His friend shakes his head hopelessly.
"Students living in Firecat Alley are advised to be careful on their way to and from class; an explosion was heard last night-"
"Gretta," the two Necromancers groan in unison. This isn't the first time she's made it into the news, though her name is no longer mentioned since she was fired. Everyone still knows who it is, though.
"Now for something we can all look forward to: Professor Wu's Baking Bash has finally been confirmed to be taking place next week after being postponed due to poor weather. Many students will be there selling baked goods, and 50% of all profits will go to the Marleybone Disease Research Facility in honor of Sylvia Drake."
An aura of darkness blasts Malorn, making him turn his attention away from the radio for a moment to check on his friend. Duncan's eyes shine with malice, though it quickly fades once he notices Malorn's concerned stare.
"Those Theurgists sure are lucky," Duncan says, his voice full of resentment.
"You shouldn't hate them because they got a new Professor before us," Malorn replies. "Things... happen."
His empty words, however, fall of deaf ears.
"Spiral news: Marleybone officials have released an advisory for foreign travelers amidst a sudden spike in crime, recommending anyone looking to visit or vacation to cancel their plans until the current crime wave is brought under control.
"But never fear! You can still take a vacation to Mooshu this summer. It was recently voted 'the most beautiful World in the Spiral', with their tranquil nature hikes and stunning ancient temples. For those looking for a relaxing getaway, I'd highly recommend paying Mooshu a visit.
"In other news, a star shower will be starting tonight, stemming from the old tail remnants of the comet Xibalba. It's peak will occur at around midnight and is predicted to end tomorrow afternoon.
"Finally, to round out your morning announcements, by popular demand, the Ravenwood Bulletin will be bringing back the 'Around the Spiral in a Week' column in the Bulletin's weekly newsletter. It was originally cancelled due to the old writer leaving the writing team. However, a new writer has finally been found to carry on the Bulletin's longest-running column. The Ravenwood Bulletin team thanks you for all the letters and lobbying for the return of the column.
"That's all the news for now. Thank you for listening to the morning Ravenwood Bulletin, and have a magical day!"
There's a soft 'click', and music comes back on the radio's speakers, the signal for Duncan and Malorn to pull their ears away from the wooden box.
"How nice of Boris to have found this for us," Malorn smiles.
"Good memories," Duncan wistfully nods in agreement, though a frown quickly befalls his face. "No news about Malistaire, though."
"I'm sure there will be something about him soon," Malorn replies somewhat hopefully. He's doing it mostly for Duncan. Somewhere deep in his aching heart, he doesn't think their Professor will be returning to Ravenwood any time soon...
"Well, time to get to work," he adds, forcing himself past his dark thoughts. There's no point in mulling over stuff beyond his control.
With an incoherent grumble, Duncan stands and makes his way to the other side of the table as Malorn moves the little radio, still playing its soft music, underneath his bench. Usually, the radio would be off by now, but since the two of them are in the library, what's the harm in leaving it on for a little while longer?

They suggest relocating to another castle, one not so crowded with their pets as the one dedicated to the school of Myth. It crawls with every cyclops, minotaur, harpy, unicorn, and automaton they’ve ever acquired over the years. Which is many. Very, very many. There are other reasons—namely not wanting too many questions about the memorial for the man they killed—but they manage to convince Malorn and Penny that the Watchtower Hall is better suited as a base of operations.
Fitting really.
A Thane’s hall seems to make this more official.
“Did you really build this place yourself?” The wizard doesn’t react to the obvious disbelief in Nolan Stormgate’s voice. They are used to his mightier-than-thou attitude, and are not in the mood to humor him right now— or ever for that matter.
Just about every upperclassman the wizard had ever encountered was now filed into the central room of hall. From Ceren and Regina all the way down to Mindy and Marla, even Boris Tallstaff—who the wizard was pretty sure just functioned as the assisstant librarian rather than a student nowadays. Some of these people they had barely spoken more than two words to in years. Some—like Mindy, they had argued with more recently than anything else.
The young wizard tries not to pay attention to the looks their classmates give them.
Tries being the operative word here.
They take a breath, trying to pause for a moment on each face. To remember what they had felt like upon each first meeting.
These were friends. More or less.
“Malorn tells me you’re all in on this idea to repair and reinstate the Dragonspyre Academy of Magic.” The wizard addresses their “classmates” from the head of the longest table they had found to cram into the room. Trying hard not to feel like a eyeball in a jar to be studied. “Why?”
And there is silence.
It stretches and drags and the shadows cast by all the fire and lamplight seem to grow with it as the wizard feels their tenuous grip on this distraction slipping. A seeping cold, very unlike the sharpness of Ice, starts to permeate the room.
The wizard closes their eyes.
“I want to see where the Drake’s learned magic.” Duncan Grimwater’s answer is unsurprising—but it shatters the growing wall of silence, and warmth returns to the room with it. Other students nod in agreement with him, primarily the other Spiritual School’s students. “They transferred to Ravenwood, sure—but that isn’t where they started, it’s not where their magic began.”
The wizard can’t help but think that might be playing a part in Cyrus not shooting the idea immediately down. “And the rest of you?”
“I want to see a baby battledrake!” Artur Gryphonbane throws out. “They used to have different variations in color and skill—kinda like the Manders do on Krokotopia—”
The wizard opens their mouth to tell him that unfortunately there are no baby battledrakes—most of them were wiped out during the war and even the one they had rode up to the great spyre was far from a baby at this point—but Penny gets there first.
“I contacted the Marleybone Royal Museum and—after having my parents pull some strings—got them to agree to leave some of their old fossilized drake eggs in my care—Ceren and Sabrina are pretty sure that with enough life magic they can be reconstituted!”
…What?
The wizard looks questioningly over to Ceren as he’s closer to their end of the table. He just flashes a wide smile.
They feel dizzy and lightheaded.
Can that really be done?
“I want to help foster a new generation of magical trees.” Sabrina Greenstar supplies, “Malorn and I have been consulting with Farley and his brothers on how best to get them to spring up from the seedlings we’ll collect in Ravenwood.”
The answers keep coming.
Regina Flametalon wants to study the architechture of the old academy and try to reconstruct it in a way that would evoke a new Dragonspyre, a reborn one instead of just a rebuilt one. Marla Stinger wants to research all the old legends about great warriors, so does Nolan. Susie Gryphonbane wants to see how storm magic differs in a place so influenced by the Dragon Titan. Mindy wants to marry the Ravenwood schoolings with some of the Pigswick ones and create a hybrid academy of sorts—the wizard is not particularly sure how that will go down.
“See?” Penny says, smiling big and bright as she pulls their attention from the rest of the table. “We have plenty of reasons, plenty of backup, and plenty of enthusiasm! It’s going to be spectacular.”
Maybe she’s right.
Maybe, just this once, something can come out of this.
Something that feels like renewal.
Something that feels like good.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
A part that isn’t overtly steeped in trauma?
Wow a miracle.

I think one of my favorite things about this game is just… the NPCs’ idle movement cycles?
All their facial expressions are subtly unique, and they give a little insight into their personalities :)
Here are some of my favorite examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All I can think about now is Malorn looking like a fuckboy, Boris being 200% tsundere, and Ceren being the embodiment of “UwU softboy” culture,,,
Should I post more of these?

Wizard City Student NPC Headcanons (Part 1)
[Part 1]
[Part 2]
[Part 3]
I wrote these up a few days ago and thought I’d share them! Most of these are derived from something within the canon, so they aren’t too wild. I’ve only played up to mirage so if some of these end up being contradicted by something then my bad. I’ve never really written headcanon stuff too much so hopefully these are good
Sabrina Greenstar
Sabrina and Regina are friends, and are in the same science class (See book quest)
Sabrina works at the fairgrounds with Hilda but she loves spending time in the library. Because of this she’s also really good at potion sorting/potion motion
Another activity she enjoys doing is crafting - that’s why she dropped those notes in Olde town, she was talking with Eudora
Sabrina also hangs out with Boris, and they like to talk about books
Sabrina is one of the older students, and around the same age as Malorn, which is why she’s allowed to help younger students learn spells
She jades in pvp
Regina Flametalon
She’s a year younger than Sabrina, but she took advanced science because she thought it would be fun
She was very wrong but she’s still capable of keeping up with the class
Regina likes photomancy, and while she doesn’t garden, has an appreciation for nature
Regina is good at battles but relies heavily on dots, which is why she didn’t have time to do Golem Tower herself
Boris Tallstaff
Boris is an assistant at the library. He’s a huge history nerd, and has a love of reading
Apart from Sabrina, Boris is also friends with Abby and Simeon. Abby dunks on him for being a nerd
He enjoys creative writing because he’s a storm
He likes watching pvp, but not participating
Abby K. Doodle
The RA of Ravenwood
She enjoys doing a lot of different activities, but fishing is her favourite because you can do it almost everywhere
Even though she pokes fun at Boris for reading, she enjoys comics
A known kill stealer, but she normally doesn’t mean it she’s just got a lot of energy
On the note of energy, she’s probably also a storm
Simeon
Simeon, Abby, and Boris are also some of the older students, which shows through the jobs the former two have
Simeon knows the locations of all the smiths
He likes travelling a lot, and was selected to participate for the Spiral Cup at one point
He’s very witty, and sometimes needs to serve as a mediator between Abby and Boris

Necromancer Study Buddy
"Wha-? Hey! Mal, let go!"
But Malorn holds fast as he drags a panicking Duncan behind him.
"What are you doing?!" Duncan continues to complain, twisting and turning with all his might to no avail.
"I'm getting you out of the house, that's what I'm doing," Malorn replies, not bothering to turn to face his friend. "Just because Malistaire isn't here anymore doesn't mean you get to stop studying."
Duncan grits his teeth and reluctantly allows himself to be dragged along. Being pulled from his home was certainly not on his to-do list today; he very much felt more like becoming a vegetable than eager to study. But it's not like he was going to do anything else useful with his time. In a way, part of him is grateful for Malorn showing up like he did.
The longer the two walk, out of Triton Avenue and up the steep slopes of Olde Town, nearing the Shopping District, pins and needles dance across Duncan's entrapped hand.
"Dude, let go. I can't feel my hand."
"Sorry," Malorn mutters, promptly releasing him from his tight grip. Duncan takes a moment to nurse his poor hand before trudging along behind his friend.
"I'm guessing you have a plan in mind?" Duncan asks as they pass by the Wizard City shops.
"Sort of," Malorn admits with a shrug. "I've been going to the library and pulling books off shelves."
A frown plasters itself onto Duncan's face. "Seriously?"
"You have any better ideas?" Malorn retorts. "The Professor's gone. The classroom's gone. The textbooks are useless without a teacher. Might as well go poking around ourselves."
He makes a good point. Without a Professor to direct them and answer questions and explain concepts and spells as they arise, they're at a loss with the school-issued textbooks. But what good is pulling books off shelves at random?
"Boris has been pretty helpful, too," Malorn continues as they stroll, noting Duncan's skeptical scowl. "Trust me, it'll be worth it."
"Alright..." Duncan sighs skeptically.
They make their way around the lake of the Commons, heading towards the small-looking building that is the Ravenwood Library. Within its walls exists a seemingly endless supply of books and shelves, with reading spaces dotted about at random. The books within float about by invisible hands, constantly engaged in the complicated dance of rearrangement, as if they're constantly dissatisfied with where they rest on their shelves. As they enter, the kindly head librarian from Marleybone, Harold Argleston, raises his shaggy head to greet the two Necromancers.
"Ah, well if it isn't Malorn Ashthorn and Duncan Grimwater!" he says merrily. He leans forward in his seat, pushing aside the open ledger before him. "Is there anything I can help you boys with today?"
"We're just here to read some books about Necromancy," Malorn replies. "Is Boris around?"
"The lad should be somewhere in the back," Mr. Argleston chuckles. "You know how to find him."
"Great! Thanks, Mr. Argleston."
With that, the two students make their way into the maze of bookshelves.
"Doesn't he also have classes to attend?" Duncan can't help but ask. It always feels like Boris is hiding away in the library, buried in books all day, completely neglecting his studies as a Diviner. How come he gets to play in the library all day whereas Duncan hardly gets any time to himself?
Malorn just shrugs back at a loss for words.
As they take a few more twists and turns in the vast expanse of the library, Malorn finally cups his hands around his mouth and calls out, "Boris? Boris!"
For a long moment, there's no reply. Not even a shift of cloth moving nearby. No footsteps ring in the air. Duncan doesn't frequent the library; he hardly reads despite his own home library being fully stocked with all sorts of family tomes. He can't help but find Malorn's aimless calling a little weird.
But then the point of a long yellow hat appears, growing longer and longer until Boris Tallstaff is peering at them from behind a nearby bookshelf. He's smiling, as if he had been expecting them for the longest time.
"Hi there!" he greets them, stepping into full view. His arms are full with an assortment of books, but despite their number and size he doesn't appear too concerned by their weight. His gaze shifts from Malorn to Duncan, and his smile grows wider. "You finally dragged him along, eh?"
"Yep," Malorn replies with a slight chuckle. "Is the study space prepared?"
"Of course!" Boris answers, nodding his head in a way that indicates that they should follow him. Beaming, Malorn starts off after the Diviner, Duncan still in reluctant tow.
Boris leads the Necromancers to a small space between the bookshelves. A single table lined with two long benches sits in the center of the space, candle flames flickering with soft orange light in their candelabras. Multiple stacks of books, each one bound by black covers, litter most of the space on and around the table, leaving but a small space for one to actually sit and read.
All of this was prepared in advance? Duncan lets out an impressed whistle.
"I think I got everything you'll need for the next few days," Boris speaks. "If there's anything else you want, feel free to let me know."
"Thanks, Boris," Malorn nods. "I think this is good for now."
"Happy studying!"
With that, the student librarian returns to his previous work, disappearing around a corner. His footsteps continue for a short moment before falling silent altogether, as if he suddenly stopped existing.
Malorn gestures to the table way too enthusiastically for a study session. "Ready to get started?"
"We're reading all of this?" Duncan asks, once again looking over the mountain of books. The more he counts the spines, the less eager he is to sit and start.
"Pretty much," Malorn nods back.
Duncan can't help but let out a groan at the task ahead of him. Yes, admittedly, he's been neglecting his studies. It's easy to do when one no longer has a Professor nor a classroom to turn to. Even their teaching assistant - poor Dworgyn; Duncan sort of liked him... kind of... when he wasn't annoying - is gone, and the Headmaster hasn't bothered getting them a new one for the time being.
"Hey, if you're not going to study, you can always take the Headmaster's offer and switch schools," Malorn adds casually, turning towards the table.
"We had that conversation!" Duncan retorts as if it were a valid point. He's not switching schools. Period. It'd feel like a betrayal on his part if he ever did, so he doesn't allow himself to entertain such a thought.
"Then sit down and start reading," Malorn replies firmly. "Malistaire wouldn't want you slacking."
A little pang of guilt stabs Duncan's heart at the statement. Indeed, Professor Drake would hate to see one of his star students behind on studying...
His gaze sinks to the floor, his body feeling heavy. He wasted the last week doing absolutely nothing with himself. If the Professor saw him now, he'd be extremely disappointed.
Duncan takes his seat across the table from Malorn and picks up the first book within his reach. It's time to stop wasting his time and get back to work. He has people to make proud of him.
