My paperback copy of Fellowship starts with a little foreword that Tolkien wrote to explain, in part, that this edition was the only authorized American paperback version (in contrast to one released slightly earlier that he considered to be pirated because it skirted his copyright through some legal trickery) and he includes the line:
“To all who have been pleased by this book, especially those Across the Water for whom it is specially intended, I dedicate this edition.”
And as someone who has been pleased by this book and does, indeed, live Across the Water, I get a stupid little thrill out of reading that sentence as JRR reaching across space and time to dedicate Fellowship specifically to ME!

Because I'm bad at sticking to TBRs, just going to try to read this one. Everything else will be an impulse read.

the feeling of falling in love dedication. everything i write is for trans people, for myself, for those of us who thought they were too complicated or 'too trans' for a love story.

I want to dedicate a book to someone who died of cancer. They were a friend I loved platonically but never really got to know in person, so I picked the book according to what it felt like they wanted because it feels like they were with me, but it feels like they chose the book where a character almost dies of a magic disease but survives as a way to say “you couldn’t save me and it’s okay, you can save them”, but I wonder if maybe I should change it to the story where their character is a hero
Both are really great ideas with powerful reasons for wanting to do them, so honestly, I think either way you go with it, it would be an honor for them and I think it could be very healing for you :) I'd say go with whichever one your heart tugs you toward.

I saw someone in the comments of something Percy Jackson show related complaining about the “wokeness” and then they were just like, “I hope they don’t add any gay shit.”
Who wants to tell them?
