Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts
Today was one of those days that life felt like a dream.

It started with a leisurely brunch at Clarke’s, a crowd favorite for breakfast and lunch, then I blogged the morning away at Truth Coffee, a spot so cool it deserves its own post (stay tuned). Now that I felt nice and productive, it was time to get Sunday Funday started! (You know life is good when catching up on your travel blog feels “productive.”)
A group of us stopped by Llandudno Beach on our way to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The spectacular beach is nestled between Hout Bay and Camps Bay, and feels more private than other popular beaches in the area because it’s tucked away in a residential area. The homes around here are swanky-- Malibu vibes. Someone said this is the most expensive real estate in all of Africa? I’d believe it. Llandudno is drop dead gorgeous-- white silky sand, turquoise water, mountains in the background, everything you’d want in a beach. We were not there long enough before we realized the time and hopped back in the car on our way to the concert!
Driving along windy roads with views of the dazzling coastline and dream homes, we all contemplated our lives in this moment. The road soon cut inland and we were driving through lush greenery. Then all of a sudden, boom, a huge township just around the corner. This was the first one I’ve seen and it really is shocking. Mansions on one side of the street, extreme poverty on the other. Seeing that hardship brought everything back into perspective and humbled me out of my dreamlike state. And just like that, we turned another corner, and were back along the wealthy neighborhoods leading up to the gardens.
The Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden hosts a Sunday summer concert series in its gorgeous outdoor amphitheater. The scenery is out of Jurassic Park-- monolithic mountains, lush plants surrounding every walkway, green in every shade. People were picnicking pre-show, and our friends miraculously snagged a front row spot.. champions!! The sold out show was local DJ duo Goldfish, who I had never heard of until this concert. Apparently their main fan base is under the age of 15 because the crowd was swimming with little fishies (kids, aka their biggest fans). It was a family affair, which made it the funniest electronic music concert I’ve ever seen because of how wild the kids were going. I was cracking up the whole time. I met a local named Kate (sista!!!) who was probably 11 years old and she had seen Goldfish three times at this venue, so cute!
Afterwards a few of us went to Camps Bay to catch sunset and dance the night away at Cafe Caprice, a beach bar known for its Sunday nights. What an end to a magical day I’ll never forget.
