Bodiam Castle
flickr
Bodiam Castle by Richard Walker Via Flickr: Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War. Of quadrangular plan, Bodiam Castle has no keep, having its various chambers built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. Its corners and entrance are marked by towers, and topped by crenellations. Its structure, details and situation in an artificial watery landscape indicate that display was an important aspect of the castle's design as well as defence. It was the home of the Dalyngrigge family and the centre of the manor of Bodiam. National Trust, East Sussex. UK

Janblu and Nelarth come across an old castle and decide to look around.
This one was difficult but enjoyable to draw. The photo is from when I visited Bodiam Castle.

(@angryskarloey making this a separate post rather than a reblog coz tumblr refuses to put my readmore where i want it? so even the non-clicked version is longer than we'd want? ugh)
col stephens: nah don't worry fam, we don't need drivers here coz we're just a tramway
railway inspector: meaning you run on roads?? that actually means you require EXTRA precautions????.??
col stephens: my stacks of money and unmatched gall suggest otherwise
railway inspector, counting the bills he had just been palmed: understandable, have a nice day
As for Bodiam... you know it!
Tumblr media
She was a common case on Stephens rails, where she had been a considered a problem child for her original owners due to being headstrong or picky and always inclined to rebellion. But these qualities appealed to Col Stephens, who liked to have engines with some "get-up-and-go" because they could usually handle more responsibility. So she flourished on the R.V.R./K. & E.S.R. Stephens was not an idiot and still gave engines drivers until sure they could handle things without one, but Bodiam mastered the art fast.
However, it's been noted that Bodiam no longer seems as fiercely independent as reports from her early days indicate. There are common theories to explain the change: When absorbing Rolvenden's parts she also absorbed her sister's more cautious and passive nature. Or, perhaps, her year spent discarded on a siding shook her confidence.
I'm inclined to think that the truth is more optimistic. After her rebuild, she again had a driver due to her need to be tested and run-in, and although at first she was peeved she quickly formed a good rapport with this man, who was less heavy-handed than the old main line drivers on the L.B.&S.C.R. This is another very common case. Steam engines can drive themselves, and some quite enjoy it, but it must be emphasized that it's very difficult and not many ever learn to do it really well. So a driver is not a bad thing. Many who were once self-driving and who later acquire an extra human actually find that, as long as they are treated with respect, they quite like it. It's like a horse with a rider, or an athlete with a coach—it's fun, less solitary, and you can do so much more with a good one! So it's unsurprising that, after bonding with one, Bodiam felt more mellow.
That said, in answer to your specific question, yes she absolutely retains some of her old instincts. In particular, she hated her first driver in preservation and their first journey, when she left Eastleigh for her new home, is imprinted on her memory as the worst run of her life. (He wasn't cruel, but they just did. not. gel. And Bodiam resented that she could not get permission to make her triumphant return alone.)
In the '70s she was matched up with a crew with whom she had a much better relationship and throughout her time since has usually been required to have a driver. She's fine with it. But yes, her drivers know to be easy on the reins, and Bodiam does quite enjoy when she gets a chance for a good "solo run."
(Fireman: What am I, chopped liver?
Bodiam: You're a bit of all right—but you know very well I'd replace you with an automatic stoker in a second if I could arrange it.
Fireman: Thaaanks, Bod...)
