final thoughts · fall 2022

since i know there're people who like to read my opinions on the different seasons, here you have my thoughts on this (HOLY SHIT OMG WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???????????) season.

akiba meido sensou (7.5/10)

so, i never meant to watch this show. i thought it would be just another CGDCT slice of life where maids do their maid stuff, and they have fun... I WASN'T EXPECTING THIS THO. this series is crazy, like, the first ep starts with a maid being shot in the head like ??????? and then ranko (best girl imo) starts shooting this rival maid group along with a cutsie song like ??????????????? i was both confused and charmed. this anime is such a blast, it's filled with twists and turns, random shit that it's bizarre but it also makes so much sense. i can't fully explain it, you need to watch it.

akuyaku reijou nano de last boss wo kattemimashita (4/10)

dear lord the toxicity here is astronomical. the way i was looking for a hamefura replacement and i ended up getting this... i feel scammed. this was meant to be a fantasy romance story, but it ended up being a contest to see who's the most toxic person in the relationship. between throwing someone out of a flying carriage just to see them cry and almost stabbing someone on the crotch because they want to break off their engagement with you... i don't know who's worse. they totally deserve each other.

blue lock (8.5-8/10)

i cannot decide myself on what rating i should give to it. while i do love bllk and think is one of the best sports series i've ever read, 8-bit's adaptation is... interesting. while i did think the first episode was amazing, the visual level just started dropping. some of the hand-drawn animation looks weird, and the cgi sometimes looks like it has been taken from a mobile game. i have mixed feelings with these series; while it's still fun and interesting, it just doesn't kick me as much in the chest as the manga does. if you wanna start bllk, please read the manga first.

bocchi the rock! (6.5/10)

as i said before, i'm not a big fan of CGDCT, and this series is just that. i was into the music part of the series and bocchi's social phobia (which, as someone who went through it, i think it's a pretty good representation), but it's still not my cup of tea. it bores me at times, and i'm the one to blame. it's not bad, it's just not my thing. if you're into this kinda stuff, i fully recommend it.

boku no hero academia 6 (8/10)

NOW THAT IS A GOOD SEASON. this one's adapting one of (if not the) best arcs in the series and hell yeah i'm hyped. in case someone hasn't started it, i won't spoil anything. i'll just tell you to please not worry about the quality: the art, animation and everything in general is being tretaed with so much thought and love. i'm just so happy to see all of them back!

boku no roboco (4/10)

(at this point, i've only watched two eps. my opinion on the series may change) i know the manga is popular, i know it makes a lot of anime references. i wanted to try giving it a chance and oh lord. first, it's difficult to find. second, it isn't even funny. if i'm not dropping it is because the episodes are short and fuck it. but not because you make a shit tone of anime references means that you're gonna be funny.

GUYS. GUYS. IT'S FINALLY HERE. BABE'S FINALLY HERE. AND OH LORD SHE'S LOOKING AMAZING. i've been waiting for this series for so long, (since it first got announced like holy fuck the feels). i have the entire part one on my bookshelf and it brings me so much joy (and tears and trauma and—) to finally see it animated. the animation, the art, the music, the voices— everything is just fantastic, perfect even. the op is a banger and each and every ed is just so good (some better than others imo). i'm so happy mappa were the ones that took the project like omg thanks mappa but fr fr. if i'm not giving it a higher note is because i'm afraid that would be my inner fangirl speaking so yeah. my children look perfect, that's enough for me. and fuck those who complain about the cgi istg—

cool doji danshi (7/10)

just a pretty chill slice of life short series about a bunch of dorks trying to survive in the wild. they're all so relatable and idk what to think about it. babe's also pretty absent-minded, so this is pretty comfy to me... is this how #representation feels like? besides that, there's not much to say about it since it's just... that. they exist, and i'm happy they do.

how many times have i said i don't like CGDCT series? many times, but i still go and watch them. why? because i'm dumb ig. it's just a series about a bunch of girls doing bricolage, that's pretty much it.

fumetsu no anata e 2 (8/10)

second season of "don't get attached to the cast because they're all going to die". at this rate, i think i'm made of stone because i haven't shead a tear in the entire series. i'm also getting use to the show's formula (introduce new character → make you feel attached to them → kill them), so ig that's also why i don't feel that sad anymore? idk, i do feel sad but not that sad yk. anyway, is as good as the first season so you should give it a try.

fuufu ijou, koibito miman. (6.5/10)

i started not liking the series (the male mc was annoying to me and i felt like he would only see the girls by their "personality"), but i ended up getting attached in some sort of way? it's an easy to watch, funny romcom that, even if it's nothing special, will entertain you for the time being.

kage no jitsuryokusha ni naritakute! (5.5/10)

i like the idea, but not the execution. i mean, kinda. it started being a parody of isekai series, but i feel like isekai is slowly but surely eating the show alive. i'm not that interested on the plot and the ecchi scenes and comments are... something. to give you some example: there was this scene where these girls would pose in ways others could check their breasts better and perceive them as bigger than their opponent's. or maybe the many comments they do about the protagonist's dick being a fricking sword????? umm not thank you.

koukyuu no karasu (7/10)

a historical fantasy shoujo series with interesting plot points and a cute romance?? hell yeah, count me in! each and every character is lovable af and trust me when i tell you you'll never get bored. the art is so cute and comfortable (idk how to explain it), and the romance is just... i just want them to date already, am i asking too much? definitely give it a chance.

mairimashita! iruma-kun 3 (8/10)

new iruma season and the first one i'm watching as it's coming out. the children are back and more chaotic than ever in this new arc (the best one yet, from what i heard). i just can't stress enough how this series makes me feel, how comfy it makes me feel. i've connected with the characters in such a way it just makes me smile every time each and every single one of them just appears on the screen. i'm so excited to see who'll win! (no spoilers please)

mob psycho 100 III (8.5/10)

this isn't the last season. no, i refuse to accept it. even though many characters are getting their closures and all this chaos is going on and every wish of them to have a happy life has turned to ash. this is not the end. and that never happened. no. just. leave me alone.

mushikaburi-hime (6/10)

so, they're trying to bring historical shoujos back and while we did get some interesting results (koukuuu no karasu), we also got series like mushikaburi-hime. the series is about a girl who is obssesed with books and a dude that isn't, but because he likes her he's up to deal with that little trait of hers. and... that's pretty much it. the series revolves around their relationship (which sometimes turns a bit toxic due to the male mc). the female mc hasn't progressed in over ten episodes, she won't progress now. if you're interested, there it is. but it's not a series i would recommend.

renai flops (7/10)

i said it before: i love shitshows. this one seemed to be a parody on ecchi, harem series which caught my eye. i mean, the first ep involves the dog scene which is one of the most bizarre scenes i've seen on any romcom. at first, i was gonna watch it for the laughs from how bad it all was, but then the second half happened and it changed my view on the series. from a parody that makes things absurd on purpose to something else. i would recommend anyone who's interested to watch it and please, do not spoil yourself.

shinobi no itokki (4/10)

this show is about a dude who goes to high school and he gets confessed to by a girl he doesn't know. only that it wasn't a confession but a trap, because that girl was a ninja and was trying to kidnap him. but he's able to runaway because he has all these ninja abilities that his mother forced him to learn and never questioned why. and then his mum tell him they're actually ninjas and now he has to go to this ninja school that's literally a high school building in the middle of nowhere like ????? i thought ninjas were discreet???? except no one cares about the school because then someone (don't ask, don't remember) gets betrayed and blames the dude's clan and shit happens and wth is going on????

spy x family part 2 (8.5/10)

part two of this very wholesome but also very fake family! their shenanigans are as crazy as they were in part one, and we got introduced to our queen, fiona. also, the main fake couple are growing closer due to the mission and i think that's pretty cool now get married for real this time.

tensei shitara ken deshita (6/10)

just your average isekai with better than average animation and a wholesome bond between both leads. besides that, i have no much to say about it. i absolutely adore fran and amanda, but the whole idea of fran being op almost from the start is frustrating. i wanna see her grow, but this left me kinda cold.

urusei yatsura (6.5/10)

many people were hyping this show, and i do understand why. after all, it's pretty rough fighting against nostalgia. still, even though the visuals are so cute and the op and ed are pretty good, it just shows the series it's an old one. the comedy falls flat at times along with some characters, although it's still enjoyable. i don't know if i'll keep on watching the second season, but for now i don't feel like dropping it.

uzaki-chan wa asobitai! ω (6/10)

so, uzaki is back. the first season has never been one of my favorites, but i decided to give the second season a try and watch it as it was coming out and... well, it's uzaki. for some of y'all it may be hilarious, but to me it's just fine. it's boring most of the time, although i do like the idea of the mcs dating (please do so for fuck's sake). if you're into this kind of comedy, you should give it a try.

Hoshikuzu Telepath Ep12 (Finale)

I originally wasn't gonna watch this, but then I learned it was a kirara anime, and since it's been a while since I've watched a CGDCT show I decided to give it a shot. Sadly it's definitely the weakest kirara show I've watched. The theme of the model rockets wasn't that interesting and the author relied too heavily on it, instead of having as just a backdrop thing for the cast like other series; And it didn't feel like a kirara series most of the time cause of how negative Umika (the damn mc!!) and Matataki were, hell even haruno who was supposed to be the mature soft girl of the group had her couples eps like that. Not saying a kirara series can't be serious or have more tense moments like that, I mean look at bocchi, but the series about bottle rockets wasn't the right place, to me. From ep 1 I wasn't too sure about it cause of how Umika was, but I was hoping with the introduction of more cast it'd get better, and it did but not much.

Oh well, could say more but it's a shame my return to one of my fav genres was so disappointing, hopefully the next one will hit the spot

Zom 100 Ep10 - 12 (Finale)

damn has it really been since oct 1st's week since the last episode? sheeeeeeeesh time's fucked. do gotta say tho, all that time between then and these 3 final episodes made it really hard to watch, cause beating inertia is hard but once I started it was easy to continue

Anyway. good show really. I picked it up on a whim cause I heard good things about the premier and reading the synopsis convinced me since it sounded p unique for a zombie show and with all the isekais nowadays even a zombie show could be a breath of fresh air. And it was. Sadly it was plagued by production issues. I said right on episode 1 that it looked GREAT, but with this being a brand new studio I was worried about them being able to keep it up and, there were tons of delays, culminating on this 2.5 months long delay for the final 3 eps. I gotta give it to them tho, the show always looked great despite the delays.

Anyway, like I said good show, prob gonna end up reading the manga too cause of it. It set up a sequel hook at the end but who knows when/if that will happen so yeah

this was the expected outcome from the start of the tournament but the matches were still a lot less one sided than they could've been and really entertaining, curious to see if we'll go straight into another tournament arc after a little cooldown or if there'll be something else

#8: "Isn't It Frustrating?"

Thirteen million people in Tokyo? That's like, a whole third more than my entire country. But it is also a huge city. Stockholm, the biggest city here, is 188 km². Tokyo is 2 194 km².

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. If they kind of jump started the whole trend, of course it'd be way more difficult now.

god the seniors' conflict is presented so dramatically i love it lol

this is great. Riko rushing out for Chika cause she's scared she drowned herself, them being gay in the water, and Chika's outburst. Honoka was never vulnerable like this, she would've just brushed it off, so this makes the drama in sunshine!! a lot more effective.

#9: "Young Dreamer"

THAT WAS SO GOOD! The drama has always been melodramatic in Love Live, but it really worked here. It feels totally earned, it's gay as hell, and that final reveal with Dia, dude. AAAAH!!

sunshine!! is so fucking good. the only reason i forgive it for not branching out from its predecessor too much is just because it's taking everything it did and executing it so much better, everything works here.

the other series in the franchise gotta do something different, cause they perfected the formula here ngl.

#10: "We've Got Stewshine"

THEY ARE SO GAY

listen, the series is never gonna like make a textually explicit romance, because the japanese market is still too socially regressive for a big name franchise to capitalize on that, but i know the artists want to, and they're putting as much gay as they can for us fans!!

these two are so cute

the seniors, along with yohane, are fucking insane lol. massive, massive dorks all of them, and i love the energy they're adding now that they're properly part of the cast.

I must say, Sunshine totally puts me in the headspace that I was in when I watched K-On!! It, along with Bocchi has been the most effective at carrying its spirit, although in different ways. I am having such fun.

coincidence that both K-On!! and Sunshine!! have two !! in their names? no, the staff knows, they know.

#11: "Aye Aye, My Friend"

oh my god you literally imagining different ways to confess to chika

they are getting away with as much as they possible can

and as per usual, the best solution to any love triangle is polyamory. go for it girls.

also, she's super cute in this get up, please have her in sloppy pajamas and glasses more like???

also, i know i'm freaking out over the gay stuff a lot (but honestly, it's just super gay, like even the original didn't have that much subtext) but the storytelling in sunshine!! overall is a lot smart and emotionally complex. it's just great stuff.

#12: "It's Time to Fly"

Okay, what the fuck even is Honoka??? In the movie, we met like an adult version of her, and now there's a kid version of her in Sunshine? Does being a school idol just eventually give you magical time travel powers or something?

Love Live always had trouble closing its seasons, cause it just got too indulgent in its own mushy sentimentality and vague metaphors (Honoka's insistent jumps over puddles, for example) and Sunshine kinda did the same thing here, but we arrived at an appropriate conclusion.

Aquors need to be their own thing. They can't be like μ's. And the message itself is kinda obvious and whatever, but it did make me realize, I don't really want a cameo (another, at least. fucking honoka). Let Aquors be its own thing the second season onwards.

On MAL, Sunshine is listed as a sequel to its predecessor, but the other Love Live series aren't, so I assume the staff realize they'll be too shackled if they don't fully let go.

#13: "Sunshine!!"

yeah... that just wasn’t very good. basically just a long recap of what the girls went through which... i mean, i saw it. you don’t need to recap it for me lol. shame, but expected the season finale to be underwhelming. doesn’t take anything away though, but it’s an episode i’d skip on a rewatch.

Overall Thoughts

Love Live Sunshine!! Season 1 managed to improve on pretty much everything the original did. It can still get a bit self indulgent (especially by the end), but the comedy is snappier than ever and the drama plenty effective. I’m actually REALLY surprised by how supremely structured everything was. The Chika/Riko/You arcs were fantastic, and I thought characters like Yohane and Hanamaru both got great introductions as well. This feels like the Love Live formula perfected.

Shiratori Tomoe

A very shy lonely girl with super low self esteem and super awkward smile but actually has super beautiful voice, Tomoe excels at raising cactus (Important) and is the leader of 7 Members Unit Nanabana Otome. She loves idol, especially Haru, and looks up to her very much and thinks of Haru as her role model. Tomoe is prone to vomit whenever she is nervous (which happens often) and thus she brings that tea to calm herself down. Her low self esteem often made her went into a stage fright, causing her to take solace in other girls’ presence on stage. However, when push come to shove, her fuse may just snapped and she went all out on stage, only after that realizing what she had done and had to excuse herself for a vomit (or avoiding vomiting). She has 0 ability to tell lies and is actually a very friendly character, coming up in both Sisala and Mimi’s whole 1.5-3.0 character episodes and other character episodes as a supportive, encouraging character (tho she stutters and almost vomiting along the way).

Character

Lack of self confidence

Her most notable feature would be how she remained nervous 100% of the time and her lack of self esteem. She believes she was no good, forgettable, uninteresting, and only shine by reflecting or be under, other’s light. She tends to take the short end of the stick on everything and has a pessimistic outlook on her future. Tomoe’s lack of self confidence was so bad, that she would spend her whole day at school pretending to sleep and only listening to her classmate’s chats as she did so. Despite having beautiful voice, she believed no one would like to hear her, or paid their full attention on her, (also that perhaps it was better for them to see someone else than her) and spend her time singing only to her cactus. This would also be her core character development over the course of her episodes.

Hardworker

Believing that she had nothing good, Tomoe is a very resilient hardworker. She would take notes when others are on stage, rehearsing alone, and training until way after everyone else had gone home. When she was down, she sang to herself to encourage herself and drank tea and rise up again (kind of). She also seems to have some sparta training of her own, and can be a very strict tutor when asked to, noting minute faults and correcting them. Although good in singing, she is bad at dance and MC (talk) and she tried hard to make up for both, doing training all by herself, or ask for help from the other idol so as to not burden them on stage.

Honest

Having almost no eloquence thanks to her anxiety in front of people, Tomoe cannot tell lies and can easily be read by just about anyone. She is also true to herself and to others, meaning every words she said--well, not *every* maybe, but she did mean what she said haha.

Caring and loyal

Perhaps thanks to her always being alone, Tomoe treasures each and every friend and fans she has. When it comes to helping someone else, Tomoe would jump for them in a heart beat. She would get upset if any of her friends are being laughed at and would do whatever it takes to protect them, ignoring her own nervousness and anxiety (and even forgetting them for a moment). Although she often broke down if it was for her own good, she usually makes her best moment and breakthrough when she tried hard for someone else. Shihainin said that this aspect of Tomoe perhaps made her more of an idol, than anyone else in Nanasis.

Actually a very talented person

Underneath her super bocchi (loner) attitude, Tomoe actually is a very talented singer. She composes her own song and her singing managed to bring a hoard of people wanting to hear more to Nanasis (much to Hime and Shihainin’s surprise). Ot seems she at times broke into one of her out of character burst, where for a moment she forgot being all nervous or all the negative statements and be so very over positive (which usually cause her to regret it afterwards)

Character Development

Tomoe’s character development revolves around her lack of self confidence, how she broke out and finally able to believe in her self just a little bit. In her 1.5, it was shown how she is faced with the revelations that she really could have fans and that her voice could really move others–although she somehow failed to stand up in stage alone. In her 2.5, fueled by her feelings towards her peers, Tomoe managed to stand up alone on stage in front of a lot of people–although she later went to another anxiety attack after realizing the after impact (lol). In her 3.0, Tomoe had to learn to believe in herself and that by being herself is much better than imitating someone else, and later on went and found her own song, which she made to support someone.

Episode Nanabana Otome is a leaping point for Tomoe’s character development. For her to learn to accept and be herself and that people loves her as she is, and would wait for her and no one else and that despite hardships, just like a flower they can still bloom.

Relationship

Kawasumi Sisala

Sisala perhaps one of Tomoe’s best friends, being together in a manzai team “Bochiizu”(meaning loners) which they made to tackle their lack of talking skill. Tomoe was one of the few persons who sing and danced together with Sisala for the first time in Sisala’s 1.5 and actually took on rigorous training for manzai together in Sisala’s 2.5. Sisala also develops deep respect for Tomoe with their interaction and would help Tomoe out in many ways, from gearing her up to help Tomoe in setting up stage in Tomoe’s 3.0. She would also assist Tomoe in composing her song, and willing to become her back singer as well.

Kasukabe Haru

Haru is Tomoe’s dream, and Tomoe looks up to Haru very much–so much she could even perform exactly like her, from the way she moved to the way she smiled. Tomoe would stand up if anyone would badmouth Haru, and for Tomoe Haru is the “real idol” . Haru is also the only girl in Nanasis to have heard Tomoe’s song for the first time when Tomoe sang alone in Nanasis Park. As Tomoe viewed Haru as the real idol, Haru believes in Tomoe’s strength, displaying complete trust to Tomoe in many moments of Tomoe’s Episode (also the only main character to be present in all of Tomoe’s episodes, supporting her and believing in her along the way).

Echizen Murasaki

Tomoe came up in Murasaki’s 3.0 as a really strict and sparta-ish trainer-much to Murasaki’s surprise. They develop a sense of mutual respect for each other, and Murasaki acknowledges Tomoe’s ability, noting her as a really strong rival. Murasaki would help Tomoe out, showing tough love when Tomoe broke down, yet believing that Tomoe would not back down under the pressure. She waited until late at night together with Sisala, believing that Tomoe would come back after her break down. She would later help Tomoe and be her back singer and helped her in composing her own song.

Futagawa Mimi

Tomoe admires Mimi’s maturity and often shown to also aim to be as much as an oneechan as Mimi is (although failed, usually). Mimi seems to console Tomoe, acting as a big sister character to her, and teaching Tomoe the ways of the female adults (lol) while watching over Tomoe making her effort from the side.

Nonohara Hime

Hime came up in Tomoe’s 1.5 and 2.5, acting as a rather tough character who would rather acknowledge Tomoe and become one of her confidants. Being quite rough in words, Hime was strict to Tomoe’s lack of dancing skill. Hime was touched by Tomoe’s feelings towards her and Haru, and in turn return it with encouragement.

Trivia:

Shiratori means “white bird”, while Tomoe means the huge comma design you can see in Shinto shrines, usually a design used on relics containing power of kami (gods) and also often symbolizing an aspect of kami.

She sung SAKURA in acapella once

Composes own song and sings them, usually her songs contain depressive statement on herself, which she sings to her cactus

Spends her winter with a cup tea while watching video

Doesn’t have a single friend at school and often being ignored by tellers as if she did not exist–she does have a classmate friend and a fan but she later moved somewhere else

Megumin Ep8

honestly there's not much I have to say about the episode itself BUT last episode, I thought the cook guy sounded super familiar but I didn't look it up but at the start of this ep he was talking and I was like "man no way they got majima for this random guy" but they actually did and also, there was an animation error, right before this screen there's a far shot of the scene and she has her hood on in it, despite not having it on before AND after it so that was funny to spot

Mashle Ep7

we're finally really in the first battle arc, tho the animation continues to be nothing impressive as expected. hoping that at least the big fight with the boss looks good but we'll see. I also forgot that razor showed up here too so that was nice, hope that his fight gets some love too cause he deserves it. tho I did like how the text at the bottom there sunk in sync with mash that was a cute touch, it was also all wobbly while he was talking underwater

Pokemon Horizons Ep8

what the hell bocchi the tuber has a face good ep tho, the livestream with her reading the baddies' goon's comment was funny and riko's reaction to having her comment read was great too, average chatter moment lmao also in 2 more weeks we're getting anime nemona so very excited for that, hopefully she has a good voice

Blooming Love Ch5

she just keeps getting better and better really cute chap, it's a shame that this series is gonna switch to be every other week instead of weekly but with how fast it's moving (for a romance) it prob won't be that bad

Dandadan Ch107

we finally out of the vamola backstory and back into the action very cool chap, especially seeing the pay off of momo seeing all that and regretting how she treated vamola my favourite part were these 2 panels, in opposites pages, after the exact same amount and layout of panels above it. the parallel of how soft momo's eyes are when she's reassuring vamola and then how sharp and serious they are when glaring at the aliens is extremely good

Kindergarten WARS Ch7 - 9

it's p funny how much of a lover boy dough is anyway good chaps, mostly action but it was good

Saihate Quarter Ch13

you know, since #9 took over the old man, this makes a lot of sense but since they didn't mention it in the shinomiya fight I hope it isn't just a thing for this one kaijiu cause of narumi's relationship with isao. it's still cool anyway, but it would be kinda lame for the baddies to have access to something like this, giving the number kaijus isao's knowledge and not doing it but we'll see

what the hell?? a serious chap? I know it had some goofs but it was still surprising to see something serious happen. tho it most likely won't be as bad as it sounds next time

introducing some more eye candy to the series isn't a bad idea, tho that one panel of fanservice was pretty unnecessary. still nothing great so far, but he's finally met one of the exorcists nue mentioned before and they're setting up a club to deal with spirits and stuff, which will help give some structure to the series in the coming chaps. we'll see how it goes from here but I'm still not very hopeful about it's chances with how bad ch1 and 2 were.

Kill Blue Ch6

interesting choice to have the first 5 pages of the chapter have no dialogue but it worked well enough I think. this was basically all about the cliffhanger from the previous chap but I didn't expect things to progress this fast

this guy jacking it WAY too much but anyway, they're using the money each fight is worth as a sort of power level so that's neat, tho it doesn't mean much at the moment that this guy's worth 10k when there's nothing else as a point of reference

you know fran only got introduced semi recently but her chaps are some of the most fun ones, tho this one felt like it repeated the same joke a bit too much for me

nice chap finishing setting up the next arc which will be 1v1 tournament style battles between the different classes, tho we'll most likely only see the class A ones for obvious reasons. I also liked to see iroha using others' mannerisms like they talk about here and later in the chap too, it's cute and it also reminds me of medaka

good chap, especially that big scenery shot very pretty. the ending is very exciting too the confession may be happening sooner than expected

weird to see a chapter without the main cast, but not a bad chap, just setting up the current situation of the country and the various faction after tokiyuki's failed war, just some more chaps and we'll go back to them. tho I'm curious to see if matsui is gonna follow historical fact or do something original when that happens, but I'm leaning more towards the latter

extremely good chapter to end the flashback sequence, more than half the chap had no text boxes and was all great action. just makes me hope and pray even harder than when it does get an anime adaptation it gets the treatment it deserves unlike what mashle has been getting

nice chap, I knew the salesman wouldn't lose to this guy that didn't get any screentime before this competition, tho I didn't expect to see his backstory, hopefully it'll only be a bit of next chapter instead of dragging on for too long

Silver Talks AniManga (14/05/23)

3 new manga this week wao, busy week for m+ (tho there were more I'm not reading) the one of most note is nue, the last of this WSJ serialization round and the one I was looking forward to the most, despite 2 of the other manga being by fujimaki and the shokugeki duo. sadly it didn't live up to my expectations but I talk about it more under there 👇

also I watched all anime episodes yesterday since mal was down for like 3 days thanks to a brainless hacker, I know I coulda just watched and updated it after it got fixed but I stubbornly like to do things a certain way tehe anyhoo

oh also there was a new chap of strike it rich but because of how comikey works I can't read it for free til there's a new chap in 2 week (yikes) so that's why it's not here, I'll be keeping a lookout for alternative sources for it but until then I'll just have to be behind ugh

Megumin Ep6

honestly the last or this episode coulda been the last and the anime woulda prob been a lot better, dunno how they're gonna fill 6 more episodes but we'll see. it was cute seeing the backstory of megumin's cape, staff and eyepatch tho

Imas CG: U149 Ep6

very good episode, in every way, voices, character acting, like usual I know ofc ofc. it's funny seeing haru always comparing idol stuff to soccer to make it more relatable to herself while the producer plays along (as he should) while everyone else is flabbergasted. as soon as they were talking about outfits at the start I knew what the ep was gonna be about (and what the solution was) but it was still good. and let me tell you, it was extremely brained for them to have the new LiPPS song as the insert for the anime at the same time as the event for it came out in the game, it's free hype real estate baby.

Mashle Ep6

I was actually pretty impressive with how the fight looked (compared to the rest of the anime) and the addition of him and mash's reflection on the metal (wasn't in the manga I checked) was really cool. it gives me some hope for the future of the anime, not much but some hope.

Pokemon Horizons Ep6

good ep but it's weird as hell just seeing shiny ray in an anime episode. done with the roy introduction arc so things can start moving forward now, tho they still won't be getting to paldea next time. however they did tease that the bocchi voiced character is part of the ship, which is funny cause they always show the damn duck in her videos so it was right there all along, we're just blind fools

Jigokuraku Ep7

nice episode, next one is gonna be The Door and the start of quite a long stretch of action, tho it won't extend to the finale. considering where we are I have a pretty good idea where it'll end (setting off from the cave iykyk). I thought it was pretty funny how they straight up just delete the tensen's nipples instead of using god rays or stuff like that since it'd be too much of a bother during fights, and honestly I much prefer this to making the fights look worse. however they did use god rays to censor mei so that was good. also also when I was reading it I said this, and during the ep I looked it up and they do indeed all have the same seiyuu, one for the female form (kaida yuuko) and another for the male (suwabe junichi), so that's v fun, glad they actually went through with it

Manga

Nue's Exorcist Ch1

MAN, out of the 4 new series, even with fujimaki and the shokugeki duo, this was the series I was the most excited for but if I had to be honest it had the weakest ch1 out of all of them :( it's a real shame. the art is really good, very clean lines and very readable, everything stands out as it should and the designs are good. however, I don't think it did a good enough job at setting up it's premise as the other 3, rn it's basically just the mc going "I want to be strong enough to protect everyone" and I don't think that's enough. we'll see how it goes in the next few chaps, but if something of note doesn't happened in the next handful of chaps I could easily see it suffering the same fate as tokyo demon bride which would be sad. I'll try to keep my hope up anyway, I know I only feel like this cause I had such high expectations for it when I shouldn't but oh well

Blooming Love Ch1 - 3

didn't really have any expectations going in but it's pretty cute art club president meets a craftsman girl, who is trying to get better at art, and becomes captivated by how earnest she is about things art is very nice and clean and the characters are expressive, could be a nice little romance if it can last for some time

Kindergarten WARS Ch1 - 3

jump + title and first indie series to get picked up by m+ it's kinda like an alt universe sakamoto, the premise is "the safest kindergarten in the world" which is protected by criminals trying to earn their freedom it currently has around 30 chaps so it's gonna take a while to catch up even if they do 2 or 3 chaps a week anyway it's good, I was the most surprised by how good the action looks but even outside of that it's good. at the end of chap 2 I was like "I hope the formula isn't always like this or it'll get old fast" but chap 3 was completely different so that got rid of my worries. I can totally see why it's so popular in jp (over 1M views weekly) so looking forward to the extra chaps til we catch up in the coming months

you know, last chap I was bitching about this flashback arc being a bit too long but that ending was just great, really managed to stick the landing there

honestly never knew that's how leonidas went so that's neat, decent chap overall anyway, finally learned some stuff about the twins' power and the leonidas fight finally moving along, tho there's still gonna be cao cao after this so still gonna be on this arc for a while

The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins Ch25

damn he really did wake up, kept waiting for it to be like "ahah it looked like he did but he didn't", at least with him up now shouldn't be too long for the end

nice and action filled chap, with a sprinkling of overall plot too, well see what it does now that this little 2 parter is done but it's been pretty decent so far

really good ch2, art maintained it's quality, introduced new charas, progressed the plot, did it's job overall. we'll see how it goes in the next few chaps tho, still too early to see if it'll live the initial gauntlet or not

Witch Watch Ch108

god damnit I knew it was too good for it to happen so fast, still it's some progress so it's better than nothing I guess

Blue Box Ch100

I knew there was no way they were gonna meet so fast, especially after they mentioned the sky trip at the beggining but still had some hope argh. karen teasing ayame was good too tho lol, and those pages with taiki reminiscing about past moments with natsu were fitting for a chap100, overall really good chap

Cipher Academy Ch23

chap felt longer than it was, but it makes sense since it's nisio and has so much text. I was worried cause of cipher's continuously low placements, but it doesn't seem to be wrapping up yet so that gives me some hope. tho it could just end suddenly and that'd be wack but we'll see... good chap tho, iroha finally making up with toshusai's other goon and introducing the new conflict and "villains" for the upcoming arc. I really do hope it doesn't get canceled it'd be a shame to lose a nisio series

Spy x Family Ch80

continuation of the plot from last time, nice lil chap, despite how annoying yuri is, but the best part was there being a rare overarching plot related thing at the end, been a while since something like that

Tenmaku Cinema Ch5

nice chap, kurai is cute and next chap should be good too, seeing her really dive into her character and all that. I know I say this every chap but it do be nice to see how passionate and knowledgable tsukuda is about cinema

good action chap with really crazy shots, reminded me of the headmaster fight from a while ago, tho I still think that one was cooler, so far, but hoping this one will surprass it since it's the finale

really good chap, interested to see where we're going from here since the heroes will have to rebuild their forces quite a bit to go against takauji again I trust matsui tho

Akane-banashi Ch61

I haven't said this in a while but akane is still my favourite series on jump right now. the scene right before this cap gave me goosebumps and I KNEW what was coming that's how it was. goddddddd please, trust me, even if you think you wouldn't like rakugo, or that it's boring, or that it wouldn't fit a manga, just read it. it's so good man

Anime

Chained Soldier Ep12 (Finale)

well that certainly was something huh like I said in ep 1 I've known about the manga for years and years and have wanted to read it but just never got around to it, I would've been a lot better off if I did tho the anime did just the bare minimum. the animation wasn't ever anywhere near impressive and the art always looked weird like there was some weird filter over it for some reason. the voice cast slapped tho and the music wasn't half bad either but there's no reason to watch the anime when the manga exists, not just cause the art is way better but especially because they didn't announce or even tease a s2 so it's a safe bet that only with the bare bones animation this was just a quick way to promote the manga and not an attempt to make an adaptation. it's a shame but oh well, I've seen much worse and the great seiyuu line up made it pretty enjoyable despite the lack of any good action will certainly be reading the manga in the future so they succeeded in their goal, tho I was already gonna do it before the anime even existed so did they really 🤔

EDIT: the day after I wrote this they released a little teaser announcing s2 will be coming eventually™ so fuck me I guess

Sasaki and Peeps Ep12 (Finale)

the finale just ends like any regular episode would end??? HUH I guess that means s2 confirmed? but it's still very very weird but anyway, I liked it, it was a fresh take on isekai and it reminded me a lot of maoyuu with all it's economical and political talk (this is a good thing). otherwise it wasn't that impressive, animation and art were alright, tho a lot better than some stuff I saw this season (like chained or rings) and the music despite not that memorable was pretty enjoyable. one of the best parts was the sugita yuuki duo for the main characters for sure. I first watched this on a whim cause of a clip I saw of the voice yuuki uses in this and that one hilarious post about the credits of the first episode but it was worth it

EDIT: today (sunday) the s2 got announced which wasn't that surprising considering the first thing I said here but still

Undead Unluck Ep24 (Finale)

a great adaptation through and through, it certainly got the love it deserves. the shaft staff coming in and sprinkling that recognizable style through the show was very unexpected, but it fit UU surprisingly well and it also served to give it a different vibe from the manga. the only weird choice was cutting out the mob characters from a billion scenes. also some scenes just didn't hit as hard as in the manga like the fist bump from this episode, that I've been looking forward to since ep 1 but it was still pretty good looking forward to future seasons (LOVE spring arc so please) so I just hope they keep the same studio/staff and don't pull a OPM and ruin future seasons

Frieren Ep28 (Finale)

you think this is the one I'd talk about the most but funnily enough it won't be. don't really got much to say about it because just one word is enough to describe it: perfect easily AOTY for last year and also one of the best of all time and that's not even exaggeration or recency bias it really is THAT good it's crazy that this is just the director's second time directing, with the first being bocchi. really bright future ahead of him and someone to keep an eye on in the future I only hope that we get a proper S2 and not a movie like studios seem so keen on doing recently

Tales of Wedding Rings Ep12 (Finale)

honestly not much to say about this, cause all I said about chained soldier is directly appliable for this as well so just read that again and pretend I'm talking about this lol TL;DR: you're better off reading the manga really shocked it got a s2 announced right away like the other but I guess that's what you can do when you keep production values this low

Blue Exorcist: Izumo Arc Ep12 (Finale)

it's a shame how the adaptation is, s1 was really good, s2 dipped a bit but was still good but this one was p weak. it just coasted along and didn't take any risks. not a crumb of sakuga in all 12 of these episodes, but at least it looked a lot better than some of those shows I talked about above at a baseline also they already announced another season is coming, without waiting 6 years this time, with more news coming out for it tomorrow so we'll see how that goes. tho considering it'll prob be the same level of quality as this one, there's really no reason to get your hopes up. I'm looking forward to catching up with the manga in the near future tho, last time I read I was in vol 18 so got a decent bit to go through

Dungeon Meshi Ep12

yknow considering the amount of times I've seen that one panel of barefoot marcille starting the ressurection spell and how people talk about it, I thought the scene would be a lot darker and intense but it wasn't. good episode tho, lots of cute moments not just of farcille but also with the siblings. the cliffhanger was really good too, would've been a great end cour one tho the show isn't even taking a break but anyway, looking forward to hearing hayamin be a part of the main cast 🙏

Manga

Ghost Fixers Ch1

this is a new series by the summertime render, which I haven't either read nor watched but have heard many things about, so I was thought I should give it a shot and hey that was p good, went in completely blind without knowing anything about it and I enjoyed it quite a bit. the art is not as good as the colour page but it wasn't bad by any means and there was a lot of shots with cool composition and neat panel ideas it also did a good job of setting up the universe and teasing how things work without explaining too much yet. the characters and their banter were pretty fun too. I'll be looking forward to this 👍 tho I do gotta go back to summertime some day for sure

Blue Box Ch142

GREAT chapter, but it was also great cause of the whole build up of the match in the last few chaps. I already knew this was gonna be the outcome since chinatsu lost and haryu is a third year and the third year losing to their protegee and "passing on the torch" is the trope still miura did a great job keeping it tense and making you want to root for both players, she's a great author
