Choked back tears in the last few minutes because of and for Lucho and then when the match ended, players came up to him, he showed his shirt again, and Klopp came to give him a warm, comforting, proud hug. God. You try not crying then.
So happy he of all people got the tying goal in extra time. "Para papa" was enough to make me crumble and "libertad para papa." What he's going through right now is unfathomable. Please let them find his dad safe and sound.

OH SHIT I DIDN'T REALISE IT'S NAIDOC WEEK. Indigenous peoples of Australia are all radical as hell and lets appreciate the generations that have survived and their culture that has survived!! I'm not going to state what land I live on for privacy reasons, but if you are Australian and DON'T know what land you're on please go do that research today and find out at the very least. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples lived on this land for far longer than its been colonised for, and a lot of indigenous peoples died in that process to build the foundation of "Australia" (and still die). The theme of this week is For Our Elders who we are INCREDIBLY lucky to have considering the horrific treatment they've had to endure.
Where there is knowledge there are our Elders. Our Elders paved the pathways for us, taught us our knowledge, our history, they passed down their art, stories and wisdom. Our Elders are the foundation of our communities and role models for our children. With this poster I wanted to showcase how important our Elders are in passing down traditions and culture to our children and future. - Bobbi Lockyer born and based on Kariyarra Country
I admit, I myself don't know nearly as much as I should about the cultures that came before I was even born or even the current happenings and issues. But there is always time to learn more!! And that always starts with awareness and listening to people who've come before.

Tumblr media
Due to her own traumatic birth experiences, Bobbi is passionate about Birthing on Country. She documents the practice in her photography, and advocates for greater support around it. Photo – Bobbi Lockyer.
Bobbi is a creator and storyteller, single mother of four, Aboriginal woman, trauma survivor, friend, aunty and artist. She’s a keeper of chickens, quails and cats, a pasta-by-the-kilo maker, painter, photographer and fashion designer. Her collaboration with Deadly Denim featured at Paris Fashion Week this year.
Bobbi shares a lot about her life on Instagram. She’s healing in real time from a violent relationship and from deep birth trauma, and lets people into her story as a way to heal them, too.
Over one third of Australian women describe their birth as traumatic, and that number is disproportionately higher for Indigenous Australian women. There’s also evidence to support that Indigenous women are between 35-80 times more likely to experience domestic violence than non-Indigenous women. 80. Eight zero.
Her own birth experience is part of the reason Bobbi advocates for and documents Birthing on Country. On one level, Birthing on Country means giving birth on the lands of one’s ancestors. In a wider sense, it’s a call for a reform of our maternity health system, to help close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous birth outcomes.
Bobbi is tending to the wound frame by frame, brushstroke by brushstroke. She’s also funny, dry and completely herself. Her hair was cut short and glowing hot pink through my computer screen. Last month it was purple. I asked her why she changed it so frequently. She said: why be boring?
What’s your favourite area of the house?
My bedroom I think. It’s filled with things I love and my kids all love to be in there with me. We watch movies or just chill together talking. My next favourite would be my art studio, obviously.
What do you feed four boys for dinner?
They love pasta. They’re just always hungry. I’ve got a Thermomix and we’ll do fettucine carbonara in that. That’s their favorite. We eat a lot of chicken and vegetables. We don’t really eat a lot of red meat. They love noodles, they love rice.
Do you have any help parenting?
No, not really. I do it all on my own. When I’m doing events and shoots I have a babysitter. And if my Mum’s in town she’ll have the kids for a couple of days here and there. But yeah, basically I’m doing it on my own.
Oof. How do you not go….
Insane? Lately it’s been painting. I love painting. I do it when the kids are sleeping or when they’re playing. We’ve got chickens and cats and quails, so there’s a lot of animals around. The kids will be with the animals and I’ll paint or play with them. Sometimes I take a ‘me day’ and get my hair done or my nails done, or something. Everyone asks me, how do you do it? I don’t know the answer. I still have three kids in my bed, because we co-sleep. They have their own rooms and their own beds, which they must think are just for decoration.
Am I seeing cats in there, too?
The two cats are in. Porsha and Lucy. They take turns between my bed and my oldest son’s bed. Usually Porsha will go to his bed and Lucy, who doesn’t really like anyone, will sleep in my bed, like she’s the queen.
Sounds like a great photo. What was the last shoot you did?
I shot a mother-baby session yesterday. It was the full moon and the mum really wanted the moon in a pink sky over the water. So we did that last night. It was really beautiful.
You have an incredible photo of a baby during a smoking ceremony. Can you tell me about it? What’s happening in this photo?
That’s my first cousin’s baby when he was about three or four months old. We went out to a sacred spot for women only, a dry river bed about 90kms from Port Hedland. My aunty, me and my cousin were there. We burned leaves and wafted the smoke over the baby, which is supposed to ward away bad spirits or bad energy and also helps to strengthen the baby’s lungs.
We sat together under the tree and made head pieces out of red wool, one for each of us and one for baby. My aunty showed us how to hook the wool around our toe and wind it all together. Then we painted ourselves up and collected flowers to finish the head pieces. We sat in the river sand and shared stories about the place. It was just really nice.
I know Birthing on Country is a recurring theme in your work. Is that something you got to experience with your babies?
No. My last birth was horrible. I’m still working through a lot of trauma from that and healing from that. There was a time after it I thought I never wanted to photograph another baby again. It took me about a year to get back into it. I’m still working through my own healing.
I can’t talk about it too much, but it’s a huge reason why I’m so passionate about Birthing on Country, because I wasn’t given those options. I was denied having my traditions and culture included in my births. I wasn’t allowed to have my family in the room. I was denied access to an Aboriginal worker and things like that. That’s why I’m really, really passionate about it and want to keep highlighting it and trying to make change.
What do you think about when you paint?
A lot of my paintings are of Port Hedland. I think about the stories I know about this place. My Mum would tell me about the beautiful, bright coral and seashells all along the beach – everything that was here before the port, the spoilbank and all that. It was all under crystal clear water. I just love her vivid descriptions. I try and paint it how it was before my time, how I imagine it to be.

FAMILY FAVOURITES
Rainy day activity?
We live in Hedland, so it really only rains during cyclone season in summer. The rain is warm and we run under it. If it’s a major cyclone where we can’t go outside, we paint or watch movies to pass the time.
Go-to album?
Lizzo or Thelma Plum.
Sunday ritual?
Sunday is our favourite day of the week. We go to church and the kids love their children’s church and creche. Afterwards we have lunch with all our friends. We go home and chill for a little while during the hottest part of the day.
Once the temperature drops enough we spend hours at the beach and the park with their scooters. We sometimes cook a BBQ at the park and by the time we get home the kids are ready for bed.
Favourite cafe?
In Hedland it would be Harbour Cafe, in Perth it would be The Robot Bun Cafe.
Weekend getaway?
We love going for long drives, somewhere like Karijini for the weekend or Point Samson.

Today we’re thrilled and honoured to be launching our second TDF Collect event of the year – Different Sorta Colour.
This exhibition showcases the work of five Indigenous artists – Doreen Chapman, Gloria, Maggie Green, Mulyatingki Marney, and Nyangulya Katie Nalgood – all of whom produce their work at Spinifex Hill Studio.
You might remember we hosted a solo show of Maggie Green’s art earlier in the year – our first exhibition with Spinifex Hill Studio. This studio facilitates the art making of around 40 artists, and functions more broadly as a creative hub for the Pilbara region, accessed by 100 artists from up to eight Aboriginal language groups each year. It stands on Kariyarra Country in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
This particular exhibition encompasses a diverse range of subject matter and painting styles, with one thing in common – colour! In their own distinct way, each artist creates work that articulates their unique relationship to family, land, and culture.
Thanks must go to the incredible team at Spinifex Hill Studio, without who this exhibition would not be possible. This online show will go a long way to supporting Spinifex, at a time when other vital income-generating art fairs have been cancelled and postponed. We hope you love these glorious, vibrant works as much as we do!
Gloria
Born in the remote community of Jigalong in 1975, acrylic artist Gloria is a Martu woman  working within a powerful matriarchal tradition that emerged from the Western Desert in the early 2000s. Her loose brushwork and pastel palettes have attracted critical acclaim for their highly affecting presence.
Gloria only learned to paint in late 2015, but has since exhibited her work across Western  Australia and Singapore, and won several awards.
To engage with a Gloria’s canvas is to be swept into a vortex of colour and kinesis, offering many different ways of seeing and feeling. Her works are like weather – commanding and mercurial.
Nyangulya Katie Nalgood
Kimberley-born artist Nyangulya Katie Nalgood grew up on a station north of the Fitzroy River.
Rather than landscapes of Country, her practice frequently references types of birds: a visual taxonomy of the species whose songs formed the soundscape of her childhood, and now proclaim the beginning and ending of each day.
Nyangulya Katie looks to birds from across Western Australia, finding inspiration in their different colours, forms, and personalities.
Mulyatingki Marney
Mulyatingki Marney is a Martu woman born at Nyinyari near the Canning Stock Route. Her Country encompasses the Punmu, Kunawarritji and Karlamilyi River regions: regions of East Pilbara in Western Australia.
Mulyangki’s work depicts semi-abstract landscapes in vibrant acrylic. Contours and textures are articulated throughout her pieces, which often draw the eye toward a single unblinking waterhole.
An established and extensively collected artist, Mulyatingki paints with both Spinifex Hill Artists and Martumili Artists in Newman.
Doreen Chapman
Doreen Chapman was born in Jigalong and has spent her life moving between Western Desert communities. She grew up surrounded by senior artists, and as a deaf person, her practice has become an essential means of expression.
Skilled at producing both figurative and abstract works, Doreen’s work continues the Martu legacy of storytelling using a unique creative voice. She paints rapidly and prolifically in broad, textural brush-strokes, creating bold abstract compositions.
Doreen’s works showcase unexpected colour combinations with assertively minimal composition.
Maggie Green
TDF Collect proudly hosted Maggie Green’s first ever solo exhibition earlier in the year, and are honoured to bring you more of her stunning works as part of ‘Different Sorta Colour.’
Maggie is a Mangala woman based in Pilbara, a remote region in the north of Western Australia. Her artwork tells the stories of her childhood spent at Myroodah Station, a sheep and cattle station in the West Kimberley Region, where Maggie first learned her distinctive dot painting style from her mother and grandmother.
Today, Maggie’s works are semi-abstract renderings of landscape that translate memories of her childhood into geometric compositions of glowing pastel colour.
Every one of Maggie’s works begins with her sketching the same thing: two lines drawn down the centre in chalk representing the road at Myroodah Station where she grew up. She then draws two squares on either side of the road – the school and the toilet block – before painting over them entirely in seemingly random shapes. Her practice is extraordinarily time-consuming, incorporating two painted layers of gridded dots.
All works from ‘Different Sorta Colour’ are available to view and purchase now on the TDF Collect website until June 30th. For all sales and enquiries please contact [email protected]

I am SO thrilled to announce our upcoming TDF Collect show with Pilbara-based artist Maggie Green, I Been Born There. It’s an exhibition of many firsts. Not only is it our first art exhibition of 2020, but it’s also Maggie’s debut solo show, and our first solo exhibition with an Indigenous artist. And we could not be more excited to share her work with you all!
Maggie Green is a Mangala woman based in Pilbara, a remote region in the North of Western Australia, represented by Spinifex Hill Studio. Maggie’s artwork tells the stories of her childhood at Myroodah Station, a sheep and cattle station in the West Kimberley Region. ‘[I was] born on station, Myroodah Station, Derby side. My mother and father, granddad, grandmother, uncles, aunties, we all been grew up there. I been going to school there,’ she reflects.
It’s also where Maggie first started painting, learning her distinctive dot painting style from her mother and grandmother. ‘We start doing painting on Myroodah Station’, Maggie explains. ‘My mum and my grandmother teaching us doing painting for us. That’s how we were learning dot paint.’ Maggie’s mother is often referred to in the stories associated with her artwork, as is Myroondah Station’s then-manager Mick, and teacher Mary. She also fondly remembers the friends she grew up with on the station, with whom she would ‘run amok’.
Created from densely-layered fields of coloured dot work, Maggie’s canvases are semi-abstract renderings of landscape. The works translate the memories of her childhood into geometric compositions of glowing pastel colour.
Maggie spends extraordinary amounts of time on one work, painting in two layers of gridded dots. She begins by sketching out the same thing on every canvas, two lines drawn down the center in chalk representing the road at Myroodah Station where she grew up. She then draws two squares on either side of the road; the school and the toilet block. But as you can see, she never sticks to these chalk lines and paints over them entirely in seemingly random shapes. But underneath every painting is the same design. The road and two buildings where she grew up.
‘That’s the road,’ Maggie explains, directing her finger to the centre of the canvas. ‘This is the house,’ she says, pointing to a section of the painting adjacent to the road, mapping out the area she once called home.
Huge thanks must go to the manager of Spinifex Hill Studio, Maddie Sharrock, for introducing us to Maggie’s spectacular work, and helping us every step of the way in bringing this show to life. Spinifex Hill Studio is a relatively new Urban Aboriginal Art Centre in Port Hedland, Western Australia, who represent around 40 core artists and facilitate another 200 or so who use the space. These guys are doing some seriously amazing work!
Maddie and Maggie will be joining us for the opening of I Been Born There on Saturday, March 21st. It’s a big deal for Maggie to travel all that way. ‘I never seen Melbourne before. This the first time. I don’t know that place’, she says. The show will be opened by a Welcome to Country from a Wurundjeri elder at 2pm, with refreshments until 5pm.
We hope you love Maggie’s work as much as we do!
Presales for I Been Born There are open NOW! To view all fifteen works, visit tdfcollect.com. Email [email protected] for purchases and inquiries. First in, best dressed!

Nyangulya Katie Nalgood is an artist and Walmajarri elder whose colourful and evocative works depict the birds of her home. Born at Nimingarra Station in 1975, she reflects on a childhood spent with a soundtrack of birdsong, thinking ‘I would like to paint these when I grow up…Birds are the first things we see, you know, when we wake up. See and hear.’
Jalmarra-jarti, All the birds have wings highlights how Katie, her Country, and its birds are connected and should all be considered as one, ‘you can’t have the sea without water, or the desert without the sand.’ The acrylic paintings offer characterful portraits of the birds of the Kimberly and Pilbara region, rendered in evocative brushstrokes that offer an insight into Katie’s relationship with the birds and country. From the jaunty legs of Ibis to the family of yellow, green and purple birds perched on a branch, these paintings are joyful and bold.
Katie works mostly from the Spinifex Hill Studio art collective in South Headland, travelling from Looma in the Kimberley Region. Katie explains ‘I like coming here to art; keeping busy, better than sitting at home. Painting and relaxing, that’s why I like coming here.’
