Top 5 sorcerer basckstories!!
I'm choosing to interpret "backstories" literally instead of mechanically (PF bloodlines, 5e origins), 'cuz there are quite a lot that aren't covered that way. As such...
#5: Lab Accident
Sugar. Spice. And Everything Nice. These were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect little girl. But Professor Utonium accidentally unloaded added an extra ingredient to the concoction: a can of whoop-ass Chemical X. Thus, the Powerpuff Girls were born! Using their ultra super powers, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have dedicated their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil!
It could be a chemical (modern science)/alchemical concoction, a laser, some sort of cosmic energy, lightning, or whatever; you weren't meant to be exposed to it, but you were. As a result, you have powers.
Bear in mind that while this is a comic book cliche (emphasis on cliche: I hate that the MCU decided to emphasize the Science Origin for all heroes [even Thor] prior to Doctor Strange), but it works well in D&D because no one uses it. Sorcerers have a hard time distinguishing themselves from Wizards because Wizards were already about throwing fireballs, lightning bolts, and magic missiles before Sorcerers were distinguished from them (and pigeonholed into doing the exact same thing). Embrace that by flipping the tables: instead of having a magical talent that got you inducted into a prestigious academy for wizardry, be some sort of academic who in the course of their studies inadvertently gained godlike power.
#4: Psychological Problem
In Matilda, the eponymous protagonist develops telekinesis because she's supremely intellectually gifted and under-challenged by her course work -- her brain has to do something with the extra power. (We all wish we were Matilda.) Matilda doesn't have a diagnosable disorder underlying her powers (at least, from this explanation; there's a lot to that book), but boredom from lack of stimulation still constitutes a psychological problem. (Plenty of characters with powers have psychological issues, as well.)
#3: Touched by Vorlons
You don't have to enter into a relationship with a magical being (i.e., be a Cleric or Warlock) to be affected by one and gain powers. H.P. Lovecraft's Great Old Ones were prone to have their thoughts and dreams invade those of mere mortals (largely unintentionally), which could have all sorts of warping potential. People who claim to have been abducted by aliens (or faeries) sometimes also claim to have developed latent clairvoyant (or similar) abilities.
This is essentially the same thing as #5 except that it roots you into the Weird part of the world instead of having some academic pursuit make you adjacent to it. As with Warlocks, Clerics, and Sorcerers with an inheritance backstory, this gives the DM grounds for possible encounters and you room to question your relationship with the world beyond mortal society.
#2: Lab Rat
Your powers weren't accidental at all; you were created to be what you are. Are you a monster? A god? Something else entirely?
Rei Ayanami. Sephiroth. Mewtwo. Other albinism-coded psychics. Eleven. That one artificial god in the Fool's Gold campaign. You get the idea. Floating in a giant tube of liquid. Frankensteinian hubris. A test subject who only wants love but is never treated as a person. Revenge. Explosions. Psychokinetic freakouts.
I love this trope. Lovelovelovelovelove.
#1: Fluke of (Super)Nature
You just have powers. You don't know how. They developed at some point in your life. Maybe you have control over them, maybe you don't. Maybe they're tied to your more volatile emotions, maybe they require a special trance-like state, maybe they burst forth during puberty, maybe maybe maybe.
This may seem to be boring, but it does force you to flesh out how your spells affected your development. Are they tied to your emotional volatility? Do you have full control of them? Did they brand you a freak, a celebrity, or a prodigy in some area? Do you love them or resent them? Do your powers make you feel special, different, or just you?

Quick thought for the whole”AUs as Pokémon” thing!
Have you considered an Ink-Error duo with Ink being a Fairy/Paychic type and Error being a Dragon/Dark type? They’d both be immune to one of the other’s types, then (Dragon for Ink, Psychic for Error). Not a big thing, just a little thought I had :>
Oh! And if the Sakuratcha idea ends up being tea (I know you said it’ll probably be a cake or something but! Just in case!), you could make it part of a little trio and give Dream a hot chocolate inspired one and Blue a coffee inspired one!
Oh, I think I can make that work. I don't think I included it on that list of ideas/concepts I made, but I have a concept name of "Artisune" ("Artisan" + "Kitsune"). And the counterpart I was gonna make for Error, though I don't have a name for it yet, would be based on a Nekomata. As a small reference to my own little Yokai AU. I was originally gonna have Artisune be a Psychic/Ghost type, but I think Fairy/Psychic can also work pretty well. I don't know how I'll make the Dragon/Dark typing work for a Nekomata theme, but maybe I can switch the Nekomata for something else? There are dragon yokai, right? Or maybe I could save the Kitsune-Nekomata combo for something else, and these typings could be used for a new pair of AUmon. Choices, choices.
Ngl the typings give me Sylveon vs Hydreigon vibes. Or like, Gardevoir vs Hydreigon. I really like Mega Gardevoir, I wish they'd bring Mega Evolution back from the box of abandoned concepts.
Part of the problem I'm having with Sakuratcha is coming up with the colors/design in my head. I know that I need to incorporate both pink (for the cherry blossoms) and green (for the matcha) into it, but do I want there to be more pink than green? I don't hate green Pokemon (or, in this case, green shinies) but some of them, like Espeon's, don't have the... right shade of green, for me? Like Dragonite, Mewtwo, Teddiursa, and Salamence? Good shinies, I like these green Pokemon. But Espeon, Ursaring, Stantler, and Scizor? Not so much. I don't want my Inkmon to be a shade of green that I don't like. But matcha also typically isn't a lighter or mintier shade of green... at least, none that I've ever seen. I mean, I could just use existing cakes or something as reference, but you know what I mean.
Look at this green shiny. This is a good green. I love Teddiursa.

The months had been very kind, to their old stomping grounds.
It was wonderous and strange, that even after a tragic fire, life felt fueled to burgeon even more. Spring had taken root, coating familiar fields with blossoms and Psyche found out even the humans in Snowbelle city ensured that this preservation area would become a place for Pokemon like her and villagers to take refuge in once more. It would take a few more years before those scars of such disaster would completely fade into memory but knowing that humans... the species who earned her ire from beginning ended up helping treasured place, made heart soften a tad. Perhaps this was the built-up emotions of finally returning with found family in toe speaking, but... humanity may not be completely horrid, at times.
Whatever the case may have been, they were back and Mewtwo could not be any happier. It appeared her heart yearned for this place more than she originally believed.

Honestly its no wonder Gods start getting involved in the Mewtwo life with Huey around. Huey is an actual Miracle child. A blood line was dead in the water, on its last leg and no one believed it could return or would return. The last Mew had its children stolen and changed beyond recognition. No one even knew if these children could have children of their own in the future.
Yet by sheer incomprehensible chance, the Twos met a young and ambitious boy who effectively brought a shattered family back together. The Mew bloodline isn't dead, but it is changed somewhat. Just bringing them together is in itself quite the feat, but due to the 1 in a billion chance that Dehlia just HAPPENED to gain access to an absurdly rare flower that blossoms at absurdly rare times in its life, at this absurdly rare and specific point in the life of these legendaries, it blossoms right in front of one of the three remaining Mews and beings about one of the grandest miracles in recent times.
Huey is born. Not a Mew, but a Mewtwo. Something believed to have been wholly artificial brought into this world naturally. All by sheer random happenstance.
No wonder the Gods are taking a step into the lives of Mew and the Twos. A wondrous event has occurred that all of the Pokemon world never expected.
A bouncy baby legendary was born into a bloodline at the end of its rope. Huey was brought into a loving family, all because a young boy decided to go off on adventures and his mom found a really neat flower.
The Gods have a new family member. One even they might have believed to never have met. No wonder they're showing up at every corner. Good for them.

Just like with the Mewtwo pinup, I started this one of Joy several months ago and figured it would make for a nice VDay illustration to get it out of WIP limbo. And just like with Mewtwo, neither of them had backgrounds planned so most of the week leading up to completing each illustration was me scrambling to add a BG and hoping I'd make it in time. OTL
I'm really proud of how these two illustrations have turned out, both in feeling more confident in replicating the OG Pokemon anime style and in my BG abilities. I think when I have a chance, I'll post some WIPs of the chaos that is my perspective drawings - they're probably more chaotic than they ought to be, but I'm still in the midst of nailing perspective and interior design down. It drives me crazy sometimes but I feel the time it takes is worth it.
I also do not have an obsession with Sakura blossoms. Not at all.

Trying to get back to drawing on my iPad, sadly I can’t redownload the apps I had before well my tech fiasco, but yea, so here is blossom! My mewtwo child ye!
Fun fact while I’m still working on drawing and coloring her. So fun fact, when mew, or we’ll my mew found blossom, the lab she was made in was inside of a Pokémon green house like sanctuary, but the underneath the sanctuary, there was a lab and as time went on, there were many experiments and one of those experiments where from the two project, hense allot of clones where made but they all died in an explosion besides one, one had survived as that one single serviced was blossom. Sadly she was born very prematurely, basically she was very small and she was barely half the size of a normal mew, let alone the mew of this world. But this is where I shall stop as I’ll fill in even more stuff once I finally post the art so yea lol

why yes i do only draw to cater to myself why do you ask. obligatory pokemon au for bdsp day, everything is the same except they have cool monsters because they deserve it. their full teams and the reasoning behind my choices are under the cut because i am a massive pokemon nerd
short descriptions because i word vomit a lot. theres tons more to all of these choices but im cutting it back.
also these teams r made with symbolism n stuff in mind i am rly bad at balancing actual working pkmn teams lol
bucky’s team:
silvally (ace): okay so silvally is the obvious choice, literally made by an evil organization for the purpose of killing things. i didn’t know what memory to give it, so i just went with the ice memory because winter or something
hisuian zoroark: we dont know much bc new game but a destructive and baneful white lupine pokemon from a distant region that emerged after perishing in the winter? white wolf. also has sick eye makeup
hydreigon: hydra remnants go brr. i just think bucky deserves a cool dragon also
meowstic (f): white feline pokemon. calming abilities. alpine
lucario: i mean honestly this is just a winter soldier reference somehow. fighting steel dog its somewhere in there
rampardos: bucky’s partner from the 40s. there’s a fossil joke to be made in there somewhere. rampardos is commonly paired with bastiodon, a shield pokemon, so i think there’s a really good opportunity to work w steve there too
zemo’s team:
mewtwo (ace): also kinda obvious ace. one of a kind pokemon genetically modified in a lab to be incredibly powerful and also incredibly vicious, and is known for manipulating its victims. zemo probably also has the mewtwonites cuz hes dramatic like that
sawsbuck: sawsbuck is very regal in all of its forms and i think it fits but i mainly picked this because its spring form has cherry blossoms on its antlers
yamask: yamask are born from the graves of the lost and carry around a mask of their faces in search of someone that will recognize them. pick a deceased family member of your choice
drampa: straight up this is just representative of oeznik. doesnt look like him but nice dragon that is also an old man
bisharp: blade pokemon, giving him the fucking sword he deserves. also i am obsessed with the visual of eko scorpion-era zemo with a bisharp at his side
empoleon: i imagine this was the pokemon that zemo grew up with. not only is empoleon super fucking strong but its also classy as hell. he would

Personally, i really REALLY love the ship of Red Genesect with Newtwo. Sorry, but it seemed really romantic when they both reached space and looked down on Earth together, and i like to imagine that out of that friendship, eventually love blossomed.
So yeah, if anybody wants to know where Newtwo is in my canon, she is in love and happy with Red Genesect. Other than Mewtwo, who is 'too human' to be with a Pokemon as a lover, Newtwo seems more content living like a wild Pokemon, so it makes sense to me she would pick a Pokemon lover instead.

Rayquaza Appeared! Can May capture it and save Hoenn? This is the new @jazwares Pokemon Select Rayquaza! I made it no secret that this was my favorite line of figures last year. Charizard and Articuno were astounding AND in my preferred scale! Rayqyaza came a little late but it is still very impressive! Every body segment is articulated, with the arms similar to Charizard's and the head being particularly superior to Articuno. So it can do some fun poses! It can stretch to an impressive length, though it only comes to just over 20 inches. This makes it the largest articulated Rayquaza to my knowledge, though not as large as it appears in the Pokedex, the anime, or especially Smash Bros. It seems like a few more inches could have fit into the box, but I assume Jazwares has a materials budget they can't exceed at their chosen (and extremely fair) $20. Would I like to see the success of this line blossom into a super-deluxe $30 line? Of course! But until then, I think I'd prefer they simply chose monsters that fit within their limitations- those that range from 5.5-7.5 ft tall. Or serpentine types apparently up to 20 ft.
