El Gato Negro

En una noche oscura y fría, mientras leía con desgana sobre antiguos misterios de terror y fantasía, sentí un leve arañazo, como de alguien que llamaba, llamaba a mi ventana con insistencia y porfía.

"¿Quién será?", me pregunté, levantándome del lecho, "¿quién será el que me molesta con tan impertinente gesto? Quizá algún pájaro extraviado o algún travieso insecto que ha venido a perturbar mi soledad y mi silencio".

Abrí la ventana y vi con sorpresa y estupor un gato negro y lustroso que entró sin pedir favor. Se acercó a mi espejo y se miró con curiosidad, como si quisiera ver su propia identidad.

"¿Qué haces aquí, gato negro?", le dije con voz severa, "¿qué buscas en mi casa, en esta noche tan lúgubre y funesta? ¿Acaso eres un mensajero de algún mal que se avecina, o un símbolo de desgracia que anuncia mi ruina?"

El gato no me respondió, sólo me miró fijamente, con unos ojos amarillos que brillaban intensamente. Luego volvió a mirarse en el espejo, como fascinado por su imagen reflejada, por su aspecto ensombrecido.

Entonces recordé las historias que había leído sobre él, sobre el gato negro que traía mala suerte y cruel destino a los que se cruzaban en su camino o lo ofendían sin querer. Y sentí un escalofrío recorrer todo mi cuerpo, desde la cabeza hasta el tino.

"Vete de aquí, gato negro", le grité con voz airada, "vete de aquí y no vuelvas nunca más a mi morada. No quiero verte más, ni a ti ni a tu reflejo maldito que me llena de angustia y de temor infinito".

El gato no me hizo caso, sólo se quedó quieto mirándose en el espejo, como hipnotizado por su aspecto. Y entonces oí una voz que salía de su boca, una voz grave y profunda que me habló con ironía y burla:

"No temas, amigo mío", me dijo el gato negro, "no temas ni a mí ni a mi reflejo. No soy ningún espectro ni ningún agente del mal. Sólo soy un gato curioso que quiere conocerse a sí mismo y explorar el mundo hermoso.

No te he venido a molestar ni a traerte desventura. Sólo he venido a visitarte porque me gusta tu compañia en una noche tan fria. He visto el retrato del antiguo dueño de la casa en la estantería y he querido recordar que a mi me daba siempre una buena acogida, un poco de agua y comida

Él fue quien me inspiró a venir aquí esta noche sombría. Él fue quien me enseñó el valor de la poesía,de una bienvenida Él fue quien me hizo verme en el espejo como un ser único e irrepetible, como un ser dotado de belleza, inteligencia e imaginación inagotable.

Así que no me odies ni me rechaces por mi color o por mi raza. No soy ningún monstruo ni ninguna amenaza. Soy tu amigo y tu admirador. Soy tu compañero de aventuras. Soy el gato negro que se ve en su propio reflejo. Soy tu alter ego".

Morris created Black Cat Appreciation Day in honor of his sister and her 20-year-old black cat, Sinbad. His sister and Sinbad both passed away that year. Morris created the day with the hope of dispelling myths associated with black cats. Since 2011, the observance has grown annually. History of National Black Cat Appreciation Day This is from ancient superstitions where people thought this meant bad luck. For many cultures and historical settings, black cats were actually meant for positive things. Superstitions aside, cats are simply adorable, even black ones. These feline creatures in their sleek, black coats may carry an air of mystery. However, most cats do. Along with that, their ability to find mischief or to avoid you equals that of tabbys, cinnamons, gingers, calicos, whites or grays. However, one black cat fact that holds true is they are less likely to be adopted. Just like black dogs, this variety of cat gets shunned at shelters. Despite this, black cats still respond to love and attention no differently than other felines. So, let a black cat cross your path. They aren’t witches. More than likely, adopting a black cat will help keep the mouse population down around the place. Expect the number of cuddles in your life to increase, too! Consider adopting a black cat. Take photos of your black cat, too! Support your local shelters and volunteer.
