9 Horrible Medical Malpractice Cases

The issue of quality health care has engendered a great deal of controversies over the years. Setting the standard for health care and the lingering scourge of medical malpractice continues to constitute a major challenge. Various cases of medical oversight, malpractice, and incompetence of laughable proportions and deadly consequences would be discussed extensively below.

While this may seem like a highly improbable situation, the manifestation of laxity and outright incompetence in health care system happened when a woman in her late 60’s who was known by the alias Joan Morris had an appointment in the hospital for angiography operation. After the test had been carried out, Joan was scheduled to be released from the hospital. Instead of being released an inexplicable administrative error occurred in which she was transferred to a different part of the hospital where a heart surgery was carried out on her. During the progression of the unsolicited heart operation, the physician in charge of her appointment placed a call to ascertain where she was. By the time the mistake was identified, her heart had been operated for over an hour. While the intervention halted the process without any immediate harm, the likelihood of contamination, injury, and heart attack was raised tremendously.

Specialists perforate wrong part of the skull

Just like the aforementioned case of laxity in medical processes, specialists in Rhodes Island drilled the wrong part of a patient’s skull. After investigations were carried out to ascertain the facts of the matter, they found that Nancy was not inseminated with her husband’s sperm or the sperm of someone remotely close. It turned out the couple had a child with African morphological features which was a totally different race from the couple. While the couple kept the child, they were instituted legal proceedings against the fertility facility and the specialist that was directly responsible for the unsavory occurrence.

Awake while undergoing an investigative surgical procedure

This one would certainly send chills down your spine. Undoubtedly, this lapse in medical care makes your nightmare come alive. This actually happened to Sherman Sizemore in West Virginia. In the course of an investigative operation that was intended to examine the cause of his incessant stomach aches, Sherman kicked out of the induced sleep and painkillers becoming awake while the operation was ongoing. It was later discovered that adequate amount anaesthetics was not administered which caused him to become awake before the designated time for the completion of the procedure. Sherman later committed suicide and his family reckons that it was due to the suffering and shock he endured during surgery.

Stitched up with surgical Apparatus in the body:

This occurrence is a clear example of slackness in medical care. A terrifying and costly mistake that demonstrates share unprofessionalism and disregard for human life. Donald Church is a man in his late 40’s who wanted to get rid of a tumor in his stomach. While the tumor was eliminated the surgeon felt it was okay to replace the tumor with a deadlier substitute in the form a large-sized iron retractor. The error was detected almost immediately after Donald was stitched up with the apparatus inside him. While he did not suffer any damages, Donald made a point to sue the hospital and they mutually agreed to a $97,000 indemnification. The disconcerting part of this account is that Donald’s ordeal is not the only case as there are recorded similar incidences that happened to other persons.

Surgically removing a healthy limb

While this may seem a little hilarious, Mr. Church was a victim of a medical blunder. Mr. Church was lucky to escape any enduring problem from the error. However, the same could not be said about Willie King. In the case of Willie, the 52 years old wanted to have his affected leg surgically removed in a community hospital in Tampa Florida. The specialist conducted the operation on the healthy limb instead of the affected one. By the time the specialist recognized the error, the damage was irreversible. The specialist decided to remove the leg altogether. The specialist’s license was taken away for 6 months and he was made to pay ten thousand dollars penalty. The specialist also offered to pay two hundred and fifty thousand dollars and the hospital paid nearly one million dollars in indemnification as well after disclosing that various administrative oversights contributed to the mishap.

Healthy kidney removed

Cancerous kidney conditions would necessitate a surgical detachment of the kidney to prevent the lethal spread of the disease. Park Nicollet hospital in an attempt to surgically remove a supposedly cancerous kidney made the erroneous move and took out the healthier kidney. Only after removing the kidney did the pathologist realize that the kidney was healthy and uninfected. Thankfully, the kidney that was assumed to be cancerous remained operational and unharmed by cancer. The entire dilemma was quieted by the family’s insistence.

Endangering a man’s reproductive organ

Benjamin Houghton was put at risk of being completely sterile after what was intended to be a surgery to remove a cancerous testicle. Benjamin Houghton who is an army officer had his right testicles removed as opposed to the left testicle which had cancer. Investigations into the erroneous mistake revealed a series of administrative blunders and inconsistencies on the patients’ approval procedure that culminated into the unsavory event. In response to this act of negligence, Mr. Benjamin instituted legal proceedings against the hospital.

Inadequate medical care results in loss of life

Healthcare is an encompassing process and has to be handled accordingly. While proper health intervention can be implemented, it is also imperative for adequate supervision and assistance to be rendered in situations that require it. This was the story of a middle-aged man in Arizona who had a severe brain injury. The Proper medical intervention was administered and he began recuperating in the facility under a life support. After being discharged, the man dies from complications emerging from the consumption of rubber bags, cloths and other strange materials that were revealed to be stuck in his digestive tract and excretory organ in a post-mortem. Apparently, the man was not monitored and cared for adequately in the hospital. In reaction to this revelation, legal proceedings instituted against the hospital by his wife.

All of the aforementioned scenarios could have dire consequences, undermining overall wellbeing and jeopardizing the quality of life. Health care is a very sensitive area and should be handled with a great deal of care and the highest level of professionalism. It is disconcerting to find that a trip to the hospital can aggravate conditions instead of providing curative solutions. While advancements in healthcare have contributed largely to improving the overall well-being of millions around the world, it is imperative that adequate legislative measures are put in place to heighten standards and reduce the frequency of perilous anomalies in the health care system.
