Jury Report

This is a very impressive project that demonstrates the benefit of a long term and committed relationship between architect and client. What has emerged from a ten-year process of land acquisition and careful planning and positioning of the project to negotiate and ensure NHS funding, is a bespoke primary healthcare surgery where it should be: at the heart of its community. The town’s central surgery has been upgraded to reflect the exponential change that has affected GP practice over the last decade.

This project brought together an architect and the practice head early on to expand Sawbridgeworth’s central surgery in a signal collaboration. Early advice saw the opportunity of an adjacent site and established a deal with a developer to find space to enlarge the original surgery building. The judges were impressed by how, despite the additional awkwardness and disadvantageous VAT position, the original building was retained, de-cluttered and transformed in a way that doubles the available area. To do this in a way that kept the surgery operating throughout is extremely impressive.

The resulting facility creates a humane and calm environment for patients and for staff with an impact on the ability to attract and retain doctors and a significant support team – we were struck that the surgery employs around 30 people at the heart of the town. We also appreciated that, while incorporating a pharmacy into the new surgery would have brought much-needed income, the decision was made to work with the existing pharmacy on the High Street: an example of real care of the wider community.

This project exemplifies how a long-term relationship with an architect can deliver on a number of levels, from getting the strategy right through to the detailed design of new, bespoke furniture, considered to support the empathy of the patient consultation. High quality, welcoming clinical spaces meet standards but without an institutional feel. The new clinical spaces have transformed their service offer without losing the intimacy of a local surgery, through the use of well-proportioned, naturally lit waiting and circulation spaces.

The project has achieved BREEAM ‘Very Good’ and an EPC Rating B for its energy performance, while the embodied carbon calculation has bettered the RIBA 2030 benchmark, influenced by the approach to part-refurbish and retain as opposed to completely build new. Bio-based material use in the project is dominated by timber, while landscaping enhancements including the addition of habitat infrastructure has resulted in a project that demonstrates engagement with biophilic design principles to improve the patient experience.

Sharon & Garry’s Victorian home in Cumbria, UK, is inspired by greenery and it’s just gorgeous.

"Our home is a Victorian rectory, which was originally built for a brewery owner in 1861, the old brewery mill is still nearby and his initials are carved in the stone above the door," explains Sharon.

They both always loved Victorian architecture and when they discovered this village by chance while on holiday, they fell in love.

Sharon says her style is maximalist. She loves color and patterns, but is especially obsessed with the color green and plants.

The biggest challenge is living in a rental and not being able to change some elements of her home that she would like to if she owned it. Really, she did so well, I thought she did own it.

The kitchen and bathroom for example, are not to her taste but she is lucky to be allowed to decorate. She’s thrilled by just how transformative paint can be to a space; paint and decorating with plants has been a way to disguise the areas of her home she would like to change. She’s lucky she’s allowed to paint.

Sharon’s biggest secret to color is finding the ones that make you feel something, that you have a connection to.

"Don’t go for a trend because it’s the color of the year, find a space or place that makes you feel happy and calm (for me it’s out in woodlands) and take your inspiration for a color palette for your home from that place,” says Sharon.

It’s surprising how greens can be mixed. This home is so calming and pretty.

Biophilic Design

When researching biophilia, I was really interested in biophilic design. I looked into biophilic design related to interior design and architecture. I came across these beautiful tiles in a lot of the images I was loooking at. They are Fez cement tiles, named after the pre-eminent city of artisans in Morocco. They appear often in Marrakech Riads, a type of Moroccan interior garden.

Oliver Heath, a sustainable interior designer and architect often features these tiles in his work.

Another aspect of biophilic design that I came across was the use of different metals and industrial style bars. These also featured in Heaths work. I really liked the cage like nature of these bars.

I also researched architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick after he was mentioned to me by one of my tutors. I looked at his work for the Shanghai Expo 2010. Heatherwick Studio designed the Uk Pavillion. While I really liked the structure and look of this building, I didn’t find his work inspiring or relevant to my project.

31st of January 2022 – Eden Project North, located in Morecambe in the UK, received planning permission from Lancaster City Council on 31 January, marking a significant step forward for Eden Project and the Grimshaw designs for this major new attraction.

The project, developed with support from local partners Lancaster City Council, Lancashire County Council, Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and Lancaster University, will focus on reimaging health and wellbeing, taking inspiration from its location within the landscape of Morecambe Bay – a natural estuary south of the Lake District. The project is designed to create new views across the bay, while complementing its townscape including the setting of the Grade II* listed Winter Gardens and Midland Hotel nearby.

At the heart of the attraction, organised around a central courtyard, is a series of shell-like structures which will host the main exhibition spaces: immersive experiences that will inspire wonder in the natural life above and below the bay. These spaces are known as the Rhythm Machine, the Bay Glade, the Bay Hall and the Natural Observatory. Wrapped around the lower part of the shells are the ancillary spaces, designed to seamlessly integrate the shells into the surrounding landscape. These undulating forms, accommodating different uses, resemble a dune-scape emulating the natural forms of the bay.

Surrounding the buildings will be a collection of beautiful outdoor gardens, designed to reflect the flora, geology and rhythms of their unique coastal environment. These include the Rhythm Garden, incorporating a new outdoor arena, and the Tide Garden whose beds spiral down towards a tidal pool at the garden’s centre.

The concept for Eden Project North is also driven a regenerative and biophilic design approach, building on Grimshaw’s work at the first Eden Project destination in Cornwall. The design focusses on reducing embodied and operational carbon, minimising energy demand and contributing positively to the environment: the project will be a showcase for visitors to learn about and experience this approach. The site will also be home to Eden Project’s research and education programme encouraging curiosity, connection and understanding of our natural world.

Beyond its design the project will have far-reaching economic and social impact, directly employing more than 400 people, with an additional 1,500 jobs supported in the region, and will inject £200m per year into the North West economy. Subject to funding being secured, it is due to open in 2024.
