probably for the best Kotu as a Toa would've been an absolute menace

Alrighty, it's day 2 of posting old artwork. Here are some redesigns of humanized Ga-Matoran ["Toronaiga"]: Macku, Kotu, and Hahli ["Mara, Kota, and Hale"].
I had originally designed them to be part of a mini-series about how Hale rose from her rank as lowly errand-girl to famous Kohlii champion [based on the flash game from the early 2000s], but I decided to have that plot merge with the island's main prologue/backstory instead of being a separate story arc.
Keeping with the idea of merging facial features with mask designs and personalities, I again "fused" shape elements from LEGO's kanohi masks into each character's design:
Macku/Mara:
An energetic, wild, adventurous [and somewhat rebellious] spirit, balancing Mara's personality with the sharp, fierce features of the Huna was tricky since the two seemed fundamentally opposed to each other. But having thought about it more, Mara is second-in-command of her village after the Elder, a role that would require tough decisions and firm direction in leadership.
In the end, I decided to incorporate some sharp, decisive elements to her face [chin, nostrils, square face shape] would be a good way of showcasing her internal struggle between the desire for the normal, care-free life of a child [wild curly hair, large eyes, freckles] and her confidence in her ability to lead her people.
Kotu/Kota:
A prim and proper personality who believes firmly in established order, structure, and earning your place in society, her design is modelled to closely resemble/imitate the Village Elder's [Turaga Nokama/"Noehli Agota"] in both their face shapes [Rau Mask] and individual hairstyles.
Other elements from the Rau in Kota's design include her lips, nose, and downturned almond-shaped eyes.
Hahli/Hale:
Another redesign [More of a touch-up than a redesign, I think?] of my original design for Hale. Not much has changed, but I wanted to polish more of the Kaukau's shape in her re-design [triangle-shaped lips, short nose bridge, and round cheeks]. I also wanted to convey her youthfulness and innocence in her design too [round face shape, large eyes], along with her cheekiness and unpredictability on the Kohlii playing field with her wild, flippy, choppy hairstyle.

Anybody remember that one time they tried to make BIONICLE into a shonen manga/anime
Pretty sure it's lost media now since you'd think it'd show up on wikipedia or tvtropes or something but I guess it's just that obscure
Ah well

Practicing my Bionicle style with some Toas. I kind of like it. Once you get how the pieces work it's fun to draw, I just love doing details.
Here's just the sketch since I liked it too

Water for Gali was a sister, a second half, an extension. In the water she was whole, embraced, with nothing to fear.
Water for Nokama was an escape, a bubble of respite. Somewhere nobody could snag her, bother her, search for her.
Water for Hahli was a home and battle ground. She was invincible within it, untouchable, unbreakable, unreachable.
Air for Lewa was a safety net, a support; a pair of outstretched arms always ready to catch him before it was too late.
Air for Matau was a vehicle, another means of transport; something he had to master lest he break his bones upon it.
Air for Kongu was a second skin, a third limb; he knew better than anyone its shifting secrets, its so quiet language.
Fire for Tahu was an old rival. It curled on him, molded itself in his image, quipping amiably as they fought together.
Fire for Vakama was a tepid gaze. It reached out timidly, barely still burning, asking to be allowed in his hands again.
Fire for Jaller was a solemn promise. One he would need to hold tight, strengthened by discipline, to do right by it.
Ice for Kopaka was a taste of wilderness, carelessness, freedom; it was howling alone, dancing wildly in the silence.
Ice for Nuju was a breath of stillness, study, tranquillity; it was gazing in endless white to decode the world on his own.
Ice for Matoro was a scent of expectation, fear, tenderness; he entrusted to it his footprints, hoping they'd last.
Earth for Onua was peace and quiet. The songs it rumbled through him soothed him like kind hands easing his worries.
Earth for Whenua was reflection and wait. The stories it had written on its skin kept him company like many old friends.
Earth for Nuparu was knowledge and innovation. He heard in it his own voice as he mumbled during tireless workdays.
Stone for Pohatu was a rough comfort forced soft; when he wrapped it around himself like a blanket, he felt safe, warm.
Stone for Onewa was a tough tool forced smooth; when he shaped it according to his vision, he felt in control, certain.
Stone for Hewkii was a lean muscle forced strong; a part of himself that he exercised apart, to carve it into its zenith.

It’s been almost 6 years since I’ve touched my humanized Bionicle artwork, but looking back, I think that time away was necessary to help me refine and focus my vision for this project, especially in character design.
I’ve felt an incredible surge of inspiration after watching playthroughs of Tears of the Kingdom (and seeing their FANTASIC costumes and characters!), and so decided to re-do Hale’s character design and basic outfit.
Hale (”Hah-leh”), like all villagers on the Island, are human with augmented abilities thanks to the mechanical implants within their bodies. These implants, powered by Liquid Crystal, becomes a source of power for them - enabling them to live immortal lives (i.e. not death by age), as well as provides unique access to their tribal element, though limited.
However, there are drawbacks to these abilities. Villagers cannot age - either physically or mentally - and are essentially “stuck” in the developmental stage when they received their implants. Because of this, all villagers are roughly between the ages of 12-14, are incapable of reproduction (though they can still have feelings of innocent love and romance for each other), and cannot mentally process events the same way an adult would, hence their need for guidance and protection.
More Details about the Design:
Long Hair - All Toronaiga (”Water Villagers”) must have hair that reaches at least the shoulders, with two long pieces hanging in front of the ears at all times. For Toronaiga, long flowing hair is representative of the connection each water villager has to both the island’s waters (front hair pieces) and her people (back of head).
Having hair longer than shoulder-length is a personal preference, but due to the high level of upkeep longer hair demands, the majority of long-haired villagers are either wealthy or hold high position of authority within the tribe. Layers are uncommon for a style choice, and are often indicative of severance rituals involving hair-cutting (temporary exile, funerals, etc.)
Heart Light (”Crystal Core”) - The front part of the biomechanical implant within all Toronai (villagers), the Crystal Core (a temporary name until I think of a better one lol) indicates the level of liquid crystal synthesized within the body:
Yellow light: High levels (enables all crystalline functions)
Orange light: Moderate levels (operational, though some crystalline functions reduced to maintain basic abilities)
Red light: Danger levels (severe reduction of all crystalline functions, the body is extremely susceptible to illness or injuries)
No light (black): Death (all crystalline functions ceased-  the body cannot function for long on its own and death becomes imminent)
The Toronai body is largely dependent on synthesized crystal to live, which can only occur when Liquid Crystal is injected into the mechanical device implanted into the spine. Without sufficient amounts of synthesized crystal, a Toronai becomes extremely weak and highly susceptible to injury or illnesses, resulting in death. More on this later :)
Career Band- A woven band indicating what position each member hold within the tribe. Bands are woven by hand and are often decorated with beads, each weave representing a particular field or specialty.
Career bands worn on the left arm represent security or establishment in a particular field or position.
Career bands worn on the right arm represent probation, often worn by those who have been re-introduced into the tribe after a period of temporary exile. Usually, those with right-arm-bands are given menial tasks, low-level assistant jobs, or hard-labour as a way of working their way back into their society after their expulsion.
Wrist Guards/Shin Guards - Toronaiga society is largely dependent on physical labour to maintain its basic structure. Activities such as fishing, crafting, and sailing are a daily necessity, and nearly every villager participates to some degree in these tasks throughout the day.
Shin guards and wrist guards help mitigate the risk of physical injury or strain from these repetitive activities.
Macrame Mandala(s) - A highly personalized representation of each Toronaiga, detailing her name, personality, accomplishments, and life history within the weaves and twists of the the threads. All three mandalas bare the exact same pattern.
At death, all three mandalas are removed and used as part of the funeral ritual:
- The first is buried with the dead underwater,
- The second one is woven into the tapestry atop the Sacred Mountain, and
-  The largest one is unraveled and re-woven into the tribe’s fishing nets.
Seaweed Shorts - Though not the only type of bottoms Toronaiga will wear, seaweed clothing is the cheapest and easiest to make, and is often indicative of status. Though seaweed throughout the island come in a variety of shapes and colours, Hale’s seaweed shorts have been dyed blue.
This coincides with the Law of Elemental Distinction, meaning a tribe member cannot wear less than 70% of their elementally-associated colour at any given time. For Toronaiga, the elementally-assigned colour for water is blue.

Welp, here's the first humanized Mahri, postergirl Hahli~! Like seriously, she had THE best glow up from Inika to Mahri. Those wings are everything on her design. I wasn't interested in buying bionicles by the time this wave came out, but if I had I definitely would have gotten this Hahli.
