I'm such a Biogoji purist compared to the later Heisei designs and suits. I think I've always really resonated with how it syncs with Godzilla vs Biollante's wider biopunk horror aesthetic and grim tone, and I think the design just barely borders being flatout disturbing?
So much of the look of Godzilla vs Biollante clearly and famously owes to Gunhed, which reflects a sense of the Cronenbergian in its grisly biology just as it is a showcase of gorgeously grisly mecha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Putting the obvious factor of Biollante herself aside for a moment, the whole of Godzilla vs Biollante feels so tethered to the roughly contemporaneous Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue and Zeiram. Its truly a flatout biopunk horror flick. It’s to a point where it actually looks a little wrong to me without VHS fuzz.

Feels like a relative of Hiruko The Goblin as well, if I'm being honest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I dunno! The movie’s just blatantly a horror picture show in a way not a lot (not enough) of Godzilla movies are?
I think Biogoji becoming the basis for the later Heisei suits, the design morphing over the 90s to the 1994 and 1995 suits becoming the "defacto" Godzilla for so long, has overshadowed the aspects of the design that are truly... gross? The texture of his skin, constantly soaking and in the movie's color palette, his dark brown predatory eyes that look completely black (like a shark's), his double rows of shark teeth. His dorsal fins, while a reworking of the classic 60s look, are actually distressingly "gory" in a way I think that gets taken for granted. Bone tearing out of his flesh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's so many classic elements of his body (mostly the Shodaigoji and Kinggoji) at play, and he is supposed to carry a regal “classic” aesthetic to contrast with and act as an uncanny dissonance against Biollante's more blatant nightmare, but I dunno! He's a quietly nasty boy, a simmer of energy Shin Godzilla cranked up to a boil?

Note
you said in a recent post something about 'one of' your godzilla tattoos... do you have more? and can we see them?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just one other Godzilla tattoo!! It’s my favorite version of Godzilla! BioGoji from Godzilla vs Biollante. And of course the Anguirus tattoo I already posted. Both of these are on the same arm, and I’ll have many many more Godzilla tattoos in the coming years

Let's put this to bed:
For some reason, there's a rumor going around online that the suit from Godzilla (1984) was stolen and to this day, nobody knows what happened to it. I don't know how this started or where it came from, but it's wholly untrue. Firstly, there were two Godzilla suits made for the film. One for the main shooting, the other for "stunts" and water scenes and such. One of these suits was taken by Teruyoshi Nakano to North Korea and transformed into Pulgasari for Kenpachiro Satsuma to act in again. How it started: https://becominggodzilla.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Return_1984_Screenshot_03.jpg How it ended: https://allthatsinteresting.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/pulgasari-span.jpg The other suit was at some point sent to America to do a publicity tour for the release of Godzilla 1985. Svengoolie (then, "Son of Svengoolie") even did a show back then with the suit on hand! https://64.media.tumblr.com/c8236ab23914497cf118f8eb312ba504/6bbc7811252ac46b-d8/s1280x1920/e1b8d137ed6755413b7a76d05aefa093fcdc87a0.jpg https://64.media.tumblr.com/f3e50da5f2a184a518b76946f6d460dc/6bbc7811252ac46b-3c/s1280x1920/c5cef9f0d70d59675b6304020fdad67675e7b2e8.jpg https://64.media.tumblr.com/fd9a7a33db0b3174f18c1186b67b58c2/6bbc7811252ac46b-64/s1280x1920/6209fdef0043a0d37820ec0fbb38a156a70421a7.jpg After that was over, the suit was sent back to Toho where it was used in several commercials. Since nobody's ever mentioned it, I presume Pulgasari was left over in North Korea where it eventually rotted away. The only Godzilla suit ever actually stolen was the 1989 Biogoji, refurbished and used again in 1991. It was somehow swiped in mid-1992 just before shooting of Godzilla vs. Mothra began. Koichi Kawakita fully intended to use the Bio/Gidogoji suit yet again for the entire movie, even with its aging, floppy plates. But when it was stolen, he was forced to have a new suit made. The effects staff were relieved when the suit was stolen because there was some kind of problem with it and they didn't want to deal with it anymore. The suit was eventually discovered discarded in a ditch, probably because the damn thing was just so unwieldy (keep in mind, the lightest Godzilla suit for shooting ever made was still like 100 pounds). Kawakita ordered it repaired and it was used as like a stunt suit in vs. Mothra, which would be the final onscreen appearance for it.

Gary to Doughy: Legacy of Legendary's Godzilla Facelift
With the first season of Monarch finished airing some lingering questions remain. The show partly served to bridge the gap between the grounded world of the 2014 film and the more fantastical later entries, but one interesting choice was to retain the 2014 design as Godzilla's canon appearance during the flashbacks.
Tumblr media
However, as early as a year after his trip to San Francisco, Goji is already sporting his 2019 look despite sticking to the prior appearance for at least 60 years.
Tumblr media
Note the wider, more splayed out dorsal fins. While the show does a ton of world building, why exactly Godzilla changed between walking into the sea and his sand bath in Algeria is left unsaid.
While unexplained changes in appearance are nothing new to Godzilla, 2019's new look went hand in hand with a substantial increase in size, despite Goji remaining a stable 108.2 meters for the last 60 years. With some exceptions (the First Mothra's radical senescent size decrease between 1961 and 1964), kaiju in the Godzilla series do tend to have some narrative justification for size changes (Heisei Godzilla's second dose of atomic radiation). When King of the Monsters originally came out I thought Godzilla's growth may have been in response to Serizawa's own nuclear boost, but in retrospect he begins the film near the 120 meter mark and remains that way versus Kong and beyond.
While it's not clear in the show whether the transition to Doughegoji came with the corresponding size boost (I won't claim to be able to distinguish 355 from 393 feet with no frame of reference), the new design's proportionately smaller head would imply some amount of growth, or else the Monsterverse Godzilla pulled a Biogoji and suffered a radical case of skull shrinkage. That said the head does appear to be somewhat larger in the show than 2019, which may suggest they were using an intermediate design rather than a straight jump from Garegoji to Doughegoji.
Another interesting point of comparison is the Atomic Breath seen in the show.
Tumblr media
While it seems more substantial than in the 2014 film, its relatively subdued effect on the relatively lightly built Ion Dragon evokes its earlier performance more than the beefed up version seen in 2019. In any case it's a far cry from 2021's "Shin Godzilla, but Thick and Blue and Heteronormative".

Kaiju Week in Review, January 15-21
youtube
I'm used to Godziban puppets taking forever to debut in the show after they're unveiled on Twitter, but Lady Gigana, Gigan's older sister, turned up in this week's episode. Like her brother, she doesn't take kindly to Little at first, but his sunny disposition (and strong resistance to blunt force trauma) allows him to melt through her defenses.
Tumblr media
This is old news, but newly discovered: a video game based on the DeVito Artworks King Kong of Skull Island books and comics is in development. No idea who the developers are, but GameMill Entertainment will publish it. This would be the first console game for Kong since the Peter Jackson remake.
Tumblr media
Bandai's third Movie Monster Series figure poll, which can be voted on through the Godzilla Store, is now live. The candidates were fan-generated this time, and based on reactions during the stream revealing them, Zilla is gonna win in a landslide. (He's already secured Shinichi Wakasa's endorsement.) I'll be backing Desghidorah though (provided I remember to make an account). They also announced a new, high-end subline, sculpted by Yuji Sakai, called Movie Monster Series Extreme. BioGoji is the first figure (surprise).
youtube
In a tacit acknowledgement that they never should have gotten rid of Spark Dolls, Tsuburaya has commenced a new web series called Ultra Sofvi World. It's basically Toy Story with Ultra Series vinyls (and crude stop-motion). It'll run for 8 episodes, with a new one every Saturday. Unlike the mainline shows, however, it doesn't have any English subtitles yet.

I’ve always found Godzilla vs King Ghidorah’s dinosaur origin so fascinating in contrast with the original implications of Godzilla’s pre-mutated nature (an amphibian with saurian traits) and later stuff like Shin Godzilla or Legendary’s gills, because the Godzillasaurus is clearly not amphibious or semi-aquatic. Whatsoever. At all.
It makes me think the Biogoji/Ghidogoji + 90s Godzilla is only a deep sea creature out of necessity of his mass and to cool himself from his nuclear fission, and, as per his completely indestructible nature and ability to swim in lava for literal years, just. Can’t drown. As in literally does not possess the capability to drown.
