today i learned about a type of fly (Bibionidae) that has weirdly extreme sexual dimorphism in... the eyes. like . the heads of males and females look entirely different species. females have tiny little heads with small eyes while males have big bulbous eyes that look more "fly-like":

but nobody on earth seems to think this is as interesting as i do because wikipedia hardly mentions this and most stuff i can find about it is very technical studies. the only, like, public-facing information i found was this one blog post by a naturalist and this page from a tasmanian insect field guide. was hoping there would be a fuckin bizarre beasts video on this thing because Why on Earth are they so different???

it’s the time of year where the bugs are dying or dormant which means it’s time to go through old unposted bug pics.
earlier this year i came across a mating pair of march flies (Bibionidae), one half of which was in the process of being eaten by a jumping spider. they were still connected, and presumably the male (the one being eaten) was still doing his job. the female seemed unfazed, and when i checked on them half an hour later, she was gone.

Bibio femoratus female by Anita363 14 mm. Very different from the male. Apparently the female has very little use for eyes. https://flic.kr/p/2kWZo88
