It’s a Turkish limited series on Netflix and may just be one of the best adaptations of Frankenstein I’ve ever seen

the reason why Daniel even played Vlad was because there were some people at Netflix who insisted on having a Romanian do the job
they messed up a lot in the series with the given information, those foreign historians are wrong, but the series is told from the turkish perspective, I am bitter but I am also thankful for giving a Romanian the chance to portray one of the heaviest names in history, as he should've been from day 1.

Loooool, so it wasn't even because the guys making the show were trying to be accurate this time around?
Yes, I am totally expecting to see a lot of propaganda in s2 too, how Vlad was a monster who had a pathological hate against the Ottomans, but nothing about how that monster was created and why he hated them.
I am rolling my eyes everytime I see someone calling the series unbiased, when it's crystal clear to me that they only care, as you said, for the Turkish POV.
Anyway, the only thing we can hope, is that one day, other countries (especially under-represented countries) will be given the chance to show their history on such large platforms as well. Casting a Romanian to play Romania's most well-known historical personality was a good move.

Movies I watched (and books I read) this Week #101
First watch: Věra Chytilová’s seminal New Czech Wave Comedy Daisies, done during mid-60′s short window of permissiveness. An irreverent, Richard Lester surrealist romp of two carefree young women who don’t abide by any rules, except their own whims. Senseless mayhem, nihilist slapstick and constant eating, ending with a Mad Hatter Feast of pie fights and destruction. The Soviet Czech government banned the film because it promoted ‘Food waste”. 5/10.

Fellini's Casanova, another of his 1970′s bloated, over-the-top, exaggerated Baroque classics. The story of the always horny, lecherous cocksman, whose life avocation was to fuck anything female, be it young, old, hunchbacks, ugly, fat, thin, even mechanical dolls. Traveling all over Europe with his sexually-stimulated mechanical bird and ridiculous girdle in pursuit of female benefactors, but who longed to be considered a serious intellectual, and not just a famous womanizer. The infamous Chesty Morgan was cast in the film, but her scenes were deleted from the final cut. 2nd re-watch after 40 years. (Photo Above). 3/10.

A blind viewing of an erotic Japanese New Wave film I never heard of, This Transient Life, part of the unique director Akio Jissoji’s ‘Buddhist Trilogy’. Jissoji apparently was known for his distinctive visual style which he used in horror films, children television and Sadomasochistic adult movies.
This beautiful but controversial 1970 story deals with Buddhist thought, family roles, religious art, obsession - and incest. It tells of an amoral young nihilist who fathers a child with his sister, even as he flirts with moral and philosophical values. Gorgeous black & white photography, constant camera movement - and social transgressiveness. It also touches on impotence, voyeurism, threesomes, suicide and murder. It ends with a climatic philosophical “duel” between a Buddhist monk and the ‘hero’, and a surrealistic dream scene involving a giant stone carp.
What a complex, strange experience - The surprising find of the week!

🍿 The gift is a supernatural/fantasy Turkish TV series from 2019. I was under the influence when I saw the trailer for it (it felt longer), and also later when I watched the first episode. So I thought that this was one of the most visually-stunning productions I’ve seen in a long time, with superb stagecraft, surprising imagination, sophistication and modern uniqueness (quotes from my notes), original like ‘Close encounters of the third kind’. But as I watched the rest of season One, I realized that it was just an ordinary TV mystery of the Netflix kind. With lovely actress Beren Saat.
Kids, don’t do drugs. 2/10
🍿 Marseille, a French TV series about power, corruption and revenge in a mayoral succession struggle. Starring Gérard Depardieu (”The second highest grossing actor in the history of French Cinema behind Louis de Funès”, but also alleged-rapist).
I was attracted to it because of the mysterious Egyptian ear worm cover Ya Sidi, to which I listened dozens of times in this past week. However, of the series itself, I only watched the first episode.

See how they run, another Agatha Christie adjacent murder mystery, a pleasant new comedy starring the always-lovely Saoirse Ronan (as well as Harris Dickinson who I saw just last week in ‘Triangle of sadness’). A meta-classic British whodunnit playing around the 100th performance of ‘The Mousetrap’ in 1953. 7/10

My 3rd and 4th films by Ira Sachs (both with Greg Kinnear):
🍿 I was compelled to re-visit his low-key Frankie, the story of famous actress Isabelle Huppert who invited her family to a last Portuguese vacation, before she succumbs to cancer. It was my ‘Best film of the week’ about 5 months ago, but I now read it received mixed reviews upon its 2019 premiere. I can somehow see why: It’s a slow and melancholic art film, and the dynamics between the diverse characters are not very deeply explored. Still, the Sintra locations are magnificent and the final scene at the mountain top is transcendent.
🍿 Little Men is a quiet, humane drama about friendship of two 13-year-old boys in Brooklyn. It is now my favorite of his films. The boy who played the role of Tony, 14-year-old Michael Barbieri, was tremendous.

The new She said retells how the two female New York Times investigating reporters exposed Harvey Weinstein’s decade-long sexual abuse, thus launching the #metoo movement around the world. I wanted to like it very much, but like most ‘Based on a recent true story’ it started badly and only slightly improved. I hate the trumps, the Weinsteins and the Epsteins of the world with a passion, and I liked the fact that this was a feminist film done with mostly women at the helm, but ‘All the President’s Men’ it was not. Even though it was clearly an attempt to frame it as such.

🍿 First watch: The stranger, Welles third feature film (after ‘Citizen Kane’ and ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’). He directed this Noir thriller to prove that he could make commercially viable films, and it did become his biggest box office success. It's a story about a Nazi refugee who hides in a small Connecticut town, and it was the first commercial film to use documentary footage from the Nazi concentration camps. Disappointingly mediocre. 3/10.

Central Park, my first book by French best-seller author Guillaume Musso, a thriller about a French policewoman who wakes up in NYC from a coma, handcuffed to a jazz musician she never met with the whole world after them. Poorly-written and empty-calories, it’s obvious that it was written to be optioned as a movie. I picked it up at a ‘Free Library’ stall at the University Train Station in Tel-Aviv, and read it in a quick tortured go on the plane back. 1/10.

I dont usually do this, recommending things to people here on tumblr, but guys you NEED to watch Into the night.
It is a miniseries, the second season dropped only yesterday. Each season has only 6 episodes and each episode's running time is about 35 min.
It is listed as an apocalyptic, science fiction, thriller. (although the sciency stuff can be a bit iffy sometimes) But as for the thriller part this show will have you on hooks .
As for the plot: Basically the sun suddenly one day became lethal and killed every living thing exposed to it. ( tw: death, dead bodies) Our characters were in a plane, traveling during the night and because of that, they survived. Now they need to find a way how to keep living while also traveling INTO THE NIGHT.
Every episode ends with a cliffhanger and keeps you coming back for more. ( believe me it's addicting)
The best part of it all is that this is a Belgian production. So not only it has a diverse cast, but also the character don't miraculously speak perfect English. And even when they do speak English, you can clearly hear their original accents.
The main language is French, but also for a majority of the series they speak German, Italian, Russian and Turkish too. (In season two there are more languages as more characters from different countries are added)
A lot of characters come from emigrant families, as it normally happens in Europe. And, i can not stress this enough, but the dynamics between different characters from different backgrounds are worth a watch. And also women are portrayed as strong and independent individuals. Hell, the group's leader is a woman.
To sum it up, this show is a really short and refreshing watch from all the English speaking, American centric media we all consume on our daily basis. It is a Netflix original so you can find it there.
Give it a try so it can be renewed for a third season, cause this last one ended on a major cliffhanger.

TV shows
Berlin, Berlin
This is a show about a girl from the countryside moving to Berlin to become a comic artist. It ran from 2002 - 2005 so it’s a little bit older.
How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast)
This one is definitly newer than the previous two. It was/is developed by Netflix & focuses on a pair of best friends starting an online drugs selling business. Season 2 will be released this July. Only has 6 episodes so far.
Ku’damm 56 & Ku’damm 59
This is a series set in 1956 (part 1) and 1959 (paret 2) showing the life of three sisters in their 20s and their conservative mother. A third part is currently in production (probably paused due to the coronavirus). This series tackles issues as homosexuality, rape and female empowerment.
Unorthodox
This mini-series is about a young woman running away from her ultra-Orthodox community in Williamsburg, in NYC to Berlin. This is a German production and most of the fim is set in Berlin, but the actors mostly speak English and especially Yiddish which is derived from German so there are a lot of similar words. Based on real life events of Deborah Feldman.
I really love this series & wanted to include it in this list even though the majority of the dialogue isn’t in German.

Fack ju Göhte (Fuck you, Goethe)
An ex-con wants to dig up the money he buried previous to his prison sentence only to find a gymnasium build on top of his hiding place. He fakes his education degree and starts to teach at the school in order to get the master key of the school. While “teaching” the worst students at the school, he ends up making a real impact. This film has two sequels but the first film is the best one.
whoami
Centered around a computer hacking group in Berlin and their attacks which mostly have a socio-critical background. While I don’t normally watch many thrillers, I really loved this one, probably because I’m a computer scientist.
Vincent will Meer
A man with Tourette’s syndrome is taken to a mental institution after the death of his mother by his father. With the help of two friends, he escapes the institution in order to fufill his mother’s last wish: her ashes being dumped into the Mediterrean sea.
EDIT: One series was removed from the list due to racist jokes and very stereotypical portrayals of Turkish people.

Rise Of The Ottoman
I was going to skip this but unfortunately i watched Roman Empire docudrama and got bored by it, and then i realize... i must give a review to one of the best docu-drama i have ever watched.
Docudrama is a genre of documentary (film, series, etc) which features dramatized re-enactments of actual events. In docudrama they interviewed a few experts who would give us the explanation of what happened in the real events, and then they would show us the visualization. Most of docudramas did this lazy re-enactment of the real events with cheap actors & actresses, mediocre sets & mostly low-budgets props. Roman Empire is the example of a lazy docudrama. They used same shots over and over, they would replace the dialogue with experts explanation voice-over and boring camera angles. The actors made it worse by giving a mediocre performance. That "amazement" towards Julius Caesar and Commodus were reduced to zero. But then, Rise of The Ottoman came.
Rise of The Ottoman is a Docudrama produced by Turkish film makers. To my amazement, they casted Turks, even when the dialogue in english (as it is produced by Netflix). It is better compared to using Americans (as usually done by Hollywood), and oh boy... even when they use Turks, they managed to cast great actors & actresses. Their acting quality are so good, i actually thought they were Americans/british. So yeah, cast was the main reason why i cherish the characters on this show, especially the one who plays the protagonist, Sultan Mehmed II. I just found out he is a regular tv drama actor in turkish TV. His name is Cem Yigit.
I believe the producers did a wonderful job on casting Cem Yigit. He is so charismatic, like... we know that Mehmed II is a young boy when he took the throne. He was just a boy but they need to give Mehmed II this charisma that can be seen by the audiences, and Cem Yigit did a wonderful job on giving us that. We can see how complex Sultan Mehmed II was, how ambitious, religious, genius, patience and brave he was through Cem Yigit and that was a really hard thing to do, especially when Sultan Mehmed II is a real figure & important person in Turkey. Not only him, the actors who portrayed Zaganos Pasha, Halil Pasha, Giovanni, Konstantinus, Loukas and Mara did a very great job on portraying their characters. We can see how each of them have their own colour & charisma. We can easily distinguish them from each other in only 6 episode. I feel like i was sucked in to their world.
Ottoman empire were often depicted as an empire with lots of colour here and there due to their islamic background. Golden accessories, green silk and red robe were mostly present at many Sultan Mehmed themed drama. However, Rise of The Ottoman tried something... new. Instead of following the custom, they tried to give the Netflix something that they has already familiar with.
When we talked about conquest and thrones, we instantly think about Game of Thrones. You can see how they tried to recreate GoT from every techincal aspect. They use this huge westernish robe, and use darker colours for Sultan & his Pashas. Even Sultan Mehmed looked like Robb Stark. They certainly used Robb Stark for Sultan Mehmed's look reference. It might not be historically accurate but it is certainly giving us this GoT character vibes. And it succeeded on captivating international audiences, compared to past Mehmed II dramas.
The props were amazing as well. Also, really GoT-ish. Everything is just dark... but not look that cheap compared to Roman Empire. Especially the locations... maybe because they shot this show in Turkey, like... the real place of Konstantinopel. By the way.... HOW DID THEY MANAGE TO MAKE A BASILICA, THATS AFSGSJDLSLHSJDKSL AMAZING. Yeah, i know it's only props but... damn i am impressed.
But as a film student, i have to pin point the aspects that are crucial when creating an atmosphere : Camera, Lighting, Music, Editing and finally, the most covenantional aspect, the dialogue.
The cinematography reminds me of war movies. The angles and the details of every shots were exceptional. It doesn't feel like a docudrama because of the cinematography. The lighting feels as if they only used available lighting. The editing also doesn't feel repetitive or slow either. I hardly see any scenes with slow motion effect except when it is really necessary. Roman Empire used slow motion to make rooms for the long narration, as if they only got a few shot stocks and it bored me. Meanwhile slow motion in Ottoman were only use when they need to give dramatization to some scenes (such as when Mehmed II walked on the field the day before the Siege began to give us a glimpse on how Mehmed feel walking on the field where his ancestors once defeated by the romans, etc)
The composer did a tremendous job at creating atmosphere on the siege scenes, although i realize everytime Mehmed is on the screen, they gave us this chilling music as if he's a menacing figure. Like i know he's stubborn and ambitious but the music gave me a lil bit of impressions that he's on the "evil" side. This brings us to dialogue. I saw how they choose words for every character on this show. Konstantinus rarely spoke any bad or harsh words. It bothers me because you can see how they gave Mehmed this "barbaric" dialogue such as : "you treacherous dog,", meanwhile I barely see the romans speak with such dialogue. Not to mention the editing. After Mehmed II forced Obran to fire an unstable Basilica, they showed how Giovanni went to slums to see the romans who are wounded. It gave this impression that Mehmed II doesn't care about his soldier, that he only care about conquering Constantinople. I have to thank the experts on giving only the best side of Mehmed in their interviews, because if people only watched the drama, i bet they could easily thought of Mehmed as an evil figure. You know, a terrorist kind of figure (since he's also a muslim). Even so, most of the audiences realize that this docudrama is a lil bit biased because it is owned by Netflix, like... not surprising really.
But from the story aspect, i gave a 5 stars for this show. I just love how they try to focus on his conquest instead of giving too much about his romance life. They could've give us a glimpse of his marriage, but nope. The producers were really determined on only showing Sultan Mehmed II as the conqueror of Constantinople. I like this part. It makes me wonder whether they would make a second season with Mehmed's wives (yes, more than 2 in fact) and children. Like... i really need it. Badly. With, of course, Cem Yigit as Sultan Mehmed II. I will be disappointed if they choose to replace him.
Anyway, just watch this show and you'll understand why i rave every aspect of this docu drama so much. After that, watch Roman Empire to see how Rise of the Ottoman is far more superior than Roman Empire. Hats off to Turkish film makers!
