Casey Scheuerell's Masterful Drum Pocket on Chaka Kahn's "And The Melody Still Lingers On (Night in Tunisia)"
Today probably more than ever, the division between drum pocket and drum shredding has become quite a point of discussion and display. An entire generation of players have attained a level of technical ability, blazing speed, and consumption of available space in musical time that leaves many drummers from the time before MIDI in the dust. But in 1981, Casey Scheuerell’s drumming on Chaka Kahn’s…

Marcus Miller - Tutu Revisited - LIVE
FUENTE: Blues y Jazz

"Tutu" (86) has been one of the most successful albums signed by Miles Davis for Warner. The funny thing, as far as the album’s prolegomenous are concerned, is that it was going to be a collaboration of the great trumpeter and jazz myth with Prince, but Miles abandoned the idea and called the bassist and producer Marcus Miller to be his project partner, the musician who composed and arranged most of the repertoire and who co-produced the work with Tommy Lipuma. Its title is a tribute to the figure of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the album is oriented towards the fusion of jazz with other predominant styles in the mid 80’s (r&b and funk, mainly), using synthesizers, sequencers and electric drums.   Twenty-three years after its first version, Marcus decided to review what has been one of his most valued projects, to rescue its essence and reflect it in a current context.   The recording was made at the Auditorium of Lyon on 22 December 2009. Miller called trumpeter Christian Scott, a musician from New Orleans who, with four albums on the market, represents the future of jazz on the solid structures that in the past have left musicians like Miles Davis. Continuing with the collaborators section, highlight the presence of Ronald Brunner Jr., the explosive drummer we have heard in the most recent past accompanying musicians such as Stanley Clarke or George Duke. On keyboards and coming from the group of Meshell Ndegeocello, Federico González Peña, saxophone Alex Han, discovered by Marcus himself at Berklee College and as bass player and clarinettist Marcus himself. With all luxury of details and, apart from the two audio CDs, includes in video that concert of more than two hours, as well as a documentary dedicated to Miles Davis

William Edward Chiaiese was born on October 20, 1934 to John and Emily Chiaiese(key-ah-tze) in Dorchester , Massachusetts . The family later moved to Squantum , Mass. John changed the family name to Chase, understanding that the Italian name Chiaiese was both hard to spell and pronounce.
While Bill was growing up his parents felt that he needed to broaden his horizons and arranged for him to take violin lessons. Bill did not even touch the trumpet, until the middle of his high school years. A newspaper clipping dated 1956 pictures Bill listed as a Corporal in the 26th Yankee Infantry Division Band holding a bass drum. Bill's experience as a drummer changed his life and the lives of many others. During a St. Patrick's Day parade he had to lug his huge drum for five miles enduring the miserably cold pouring rain. It hurt so bad that he decided never to do it again, he asked his father to dig out his old trumpet for him.
Not long after switching to trumpet, Bill was playing first chair in the school orchestra and classical music was his main love. Early 1950's a neighbor coaxed Bill to attend a Stan Kenton concert with him. This was the band with Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Childers, Conte Condoli, etc. After that night, Bill was hooked on jazz and high note trumpet.
As you can tell, this time period in Bills life is hard to decipher. Bill was doing so much playing, and he became very good so quickly, that the dates are very confusing. Since Maynard left the Kenton Band and headed to Hollywood in 1953, Bill must have seen Kenton before then. I can only assume that he switched to the trumpet around 1951 at about the age of 16.
Boston Globe writer Ernie Santosuosso wrote about Bill in 1971, “Bill Chase has been experimenting with sounds all of his life. As a youngster in the Fields Corner community of Dorchester , he was intrigued by the drums. Since he didn’t own a set, he’d improvise with the aid of a couple of galvanized steel rubbish barrels.
Bill’s backyard became his bandstand as he beat out precocious rhythms atop the inverted barrels. The little Italian lady, who sat at her kitchen window, regarded Bill as a pet but voiced emphatic objections to his make-shift paraddidling on the barrels. So, when Bill’s father, who played trumpet, decided to retire his horn, the boy’s curiosity inevitably led him to the instrument and away from the barrel- house. The maturation process as a trumpeter had begun for Bill.
The ex-drummer put his horn to work for St. Ambrose’s Band, then for Boston English High, Berklee, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Woody Herman. The little old Italian lady was given special command performances in her kitchen and she almost lit a candle in thanksgiving for young Bill’s return to his barrels and rubbish deposits.”
He started playing his fathers old trumpet the summer before his junior year in high school and showed a natural aptitude for it. He soon joined a Drum and Bugle Corps, along with his school groups. This, was prior to his stint in the Boston National Guard where he said he wrote music and played trumpet in 1957. He served for six months in the guard band, which honed his talents as a trumpeter and arranger.
Chase played lead trumpet with Maynard Ferguson in 1958, Stan Kenton in 1959, and Woody Herman's Thundering Herd during the 1960s.
One of Chase's charts from this period, "Camel Walk", was published in the 1963 Downbeat magazine yearbook. From 1966 to 1970 he freelanced in Las Vegas, working with Vic Damone and Tommy Vig. In 1967 he led a six-piece band at the Dunes and Riviera Hotel where he was featured in the Frederick Apcar lounge production of Vive Les Girls, for which Chase arranged the music.
In 1971 he started a jazz rock band named "Chase" that mixed pop, rock, blues, and four trumpets.[5] The debut album Chase was released in April 1971. Chase was joined by Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair, three jazz trumpeters who were adept at vocals and arranging. They were backed up by a rhythm section consisting of Phil Porter on keyboards, Angel South on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass, and John "Jay Burrid" Mitthaur on percussion. Rounding out the group was Terry Richards, who was the lead vocalist on the first album. The album contains Chase's most popular song, "Get It On", released as a single that spent 13 weeks on the charts beginning in May 1971. The song features what Jim Szantor of Downbeat magazine called "the hallmark of the Chase brass—complex cascading lines; a literal waterfall of trumpet timbre and technique." The band received a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, but was edged out by rising star Carly Simon.
Chase released their second album, Ennea, in March 1972; the album's title is the Greek word for nine, a reference to the nine band members. The original lineup changed midway through the recording sessions, with Gary Smith taking over on drums and G. G. Shinn replacing Terry Richards on lead vocals. The third album, Pure Music, moved the band toward jazz. Two of the songs were written or co-written by Jim Peterik of the Ides of March, who also sings on the album, along with singer and bassist Dartanyan Brown.
Chase's work on a fourth studio album in mid-1974 came to an end on August 9, 1974. While en route to a scheduled performance at the Jackson County Fair, Chase died in the crash of a chartered twin-engine Piper Twin Comanche in Jackson, Minnesota, at the age of 39. The pilot and co-pilot were killed, as were keyboardist Wally Yohn, guitarist John Emma, and drummer Walter Clark.

The question is usually a variation on You must be so proud of your daughter.
And the answer is usually a variation on We are!
The truth is, though, we are well passed our proud stage.
Yes. We were proud when she learned how to play the piano using that Piano For Quitters video tape.
Yes. We were proud when she taught herself how to play the guitar with help from the internet.
Absolutely we were proud when she wrote her first song in Jr. High. It was a legitimately good song with wonderful lyrics and, one more time...
She was in Jr. High.
Of course we were proud and impressed by the songs she subsequently wrote and then performed to live audiences at coffee houses, talent shows, festivals, and concerts.
We were proud when she learned how to play the clarinet because that was a legitimately difficult instrument to learn but she bullied her way through it, she persevered, and succeeded enough over one summer to join the school band in the Fall on...
Clarinet.
We got a note from her band director.
"Well, she's done it again! "
And she had.
And this was still Jr. High.
And we were still proud.
In High School there was lots more to be proud of. How she owned the school's talent show only a few weeks after setting foot in the school for the first time. The National Merit Scholar thing. The live rock band performance after which stage-diving actually occurred. That one vocal solo at Benaroya Hall. And then stepping into the spring musical her senior year, the only year in which she did it, absolutely killed it as the witch in Big Fish. And then performing an original at her own graduation.
Absolutely absolutely absolutely the song she wrote and performed for a friend's memorial in front of her school and her friend's parents. It was a breathtaking moment. There was a tremendous amount of pressure on that moment.
And so on.
Proud. Proud. Proud. Proud proud.
We were proud of her audition for Berklee School of Music at London Bridge Studios and her audition for Cornish College of the Arts.
There was a lot of pressure there, too. And this was about her future.
She was accepted to both schools, by the way.
We were proud as her songwriting took off in college. We were proud of her performances for her Jazz classes and then that song "The Rain Song" she whipped out freshman year.
We were proud of her still unfinished musical because that first song she wrote was absolutely stunning. We had no problem imagining its performance at The 5th Avenue or Benaroya or McCaw Hall.
Some day.
In college she was challenged by teachers who didn't already think she was the best thing ever coming out of high school. They treated her as someone with a lot to learn... and she rose to their ever higher demands. Which was about music, yes. Which was about performance, yes. Which was about being a professional.
We were proud of her Jr. Recital in Poncho Concert Hall. The one for which she put a band together including upright bass, drums, piano, electric and acoustic guitars as well as additional vocalists.
It was like being at a jazz club.
We were proud, of course, when she graduated... it was online, though, so we were even more proud when she walked the stage at Benaroya Hall the following year, in-person, with her class.
Now that. Was a big deal.
We were proud as she continued to pursue her career after college, continuing to write, picking up cafe and winery gigs, working the business side at The Royal Room, and doing those random SoFar gigs, the high point of which was singing Reckless with Robbie Christmas at The Shop. Or maybe that gig at Ward Johnson Winery on Elliott near the Magnolia Bridge. People we're so incredibly into that performance.
Dang.
It has been quite a ride.
Somewhere in there, though, the word "proud" wasn't the word anymore. Not really.
Huh?
Well, take the last month, for example.
She put a band together for a New Year's party thrown by the city of Everett. She joined the band Midnight High that's taking off in the Spring. She made a guest appearance with Robbie Christmas & Company at The Triple Door on the song Walla Walla (which she co-wrote). She's producing a number of her own songs for a company that places music in TV and film. And then she just did that Christine McVie tribute with The Little Lies at the Nectar Lounge.
The next afternoon I gave her a call... but she couldn't talk just then because she was in vocal rehearsals with Midnight High.
So no. Proud isn't the word.
I'm not sure what the word actually is... but it's something like amazed. It's something like excited. It's something like breathtaking.
I mean... she is taking. Off.
I mean... this is happening.
I mean a straight-up music career is in progress.
And I mean wow.
Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.
And no. She's not doing this alone. She's part of a community of musicians who are pursuing this particular dream, this creative profession. And as the days speed by, that community, that network of professionals keeps growing. As do the opportunities.
So yup. Proud isn’t the word, exactly.
I don’t know what the word is, really.
But we're crazy excited.
😁😁😁

New Music | Alec Schulman
Los Angeles native Alec Schulman, gifted jazz pianist and singer-songwriter, is far from alone among musicians in his deep admiration for the great Joni Mitchell. But the circumstances surrounding his remarkable debut album, Light That Slips Away, are nearly unheard of. After meeting renowned bassist/producer Larry Klein, Mitchell’s ex-husband, at a Berklee masterclass, Schulman and Klein became fast friends and Klein assumed the role of a musical mentor.
Light That Slips Away by Alec Schulman
Back in LA during the COVID crisis, Schulman played Klein early versions of songs that would ultimately appear on Light That Slips Away. Klein not only shared his insights but also played on the album. One thing led to another, and the lineup on several songs grew to include not only Klein but drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and pedal-steel veteran Greg Leisz — some of Joni Mitchell’s closest bandmates and collaborators from the 1990s. These masters were enthusiastic to take part, and far from upstaging the young Schulman, they helped bring his distinctive sound and story to fruition.
On Part 2 the focus shifts to Schulman on solo piano, offering eight beautiful introspective improvisations to complete the picture. This is where Light That Slips Away began, as a solo piano statement, though the heart of it kept expanding. Moods range from the flowing melodies of “Detour” and “In Blackwater Woods” (a Mary Oliver poem) to the more rhythmic and coarser texture of “Wake Up.”
Enter Aaron Parks — friend and fellow pianist, renowned for his albums on Blue Note and ECM and his work with Terence Blanchard, the jazz supergroup James Farm and countless others — to serve as coproducer of this dream project. “Alec is a deeply thoughtful songwriter,” says Parks, “an adventurous and accomplished pianist, and he brings a unique and compelling point of view to everything he creates.” With regular input from Parks and Klein as well, Light That Slips Awaycame into focus with pivotal contributions from vocalists Emma Frank and Jessame Berry, not to mention Schulman himself singing “Fire Song (On the New Horizon).” Jazz guitar maestro Gilad Hekselman also brings his liquid tonal personality to “Home,” a drum-less instrumental featuring Leisz and Klein, with Schulman adding touches of Hammond organ. Guitarist Roy Ben Bashat, bassist Ethan Moffitt, drummer Christian Euman and violinist/violist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson add sparkle and polish in just the right measure.

Howard Britz Jazz Piano Trio Presented By Bethel Jazz and Festival52 1st set 11-9-22 LaZingara Bethel CT 2nd set from CTFF on Vimeo.
Howard Britz Jazz Piano Trio Presented By Bethel Jazz and Festival52 1st set 11-9-22 LaZingara Bethel CT 2nd set
Bethel Jazz Presents: British JazZ Pianist Howard Britz, Bassist Dmitri Kolesnik and Drummer Eric Halvorson.
Howard Britz Piano, Bass Player and Composer Versatile and creative Pianist, Bassist and composer Howard Britz was born in London, England 1961. He played trumpet then saxophone in high school and had begun to play professionally when an jaw injury forced him to give up wind instruments. Switching to bass at 17 years old he also started composing. After attending Guildhall School of Music in London he played in the London and UK scene from 1985.
In 1995 he made the move to the US taking up a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA then transferring to New England Conservatory and graduating in 1995. During the Boston years played with some of the great artists on the scene at the time including saxophonists Seamus Blake, Bill Pierce and Jacques Schwartz- Bart, pianist Danilo Perez, vocalist/composer Luciana Souza, The Jazz Composers Alliance and composer/pianist Guillermo Klein’s Big Van as well as many Latin Jazz and Salsa groups. Moving to Philadelphia, PA in 1996 to join his wife who was studying at the University of Pennsylvania, Howard didn’t know a soul there but quickly found a fertile music scene going on. Although somewhat off the radar of many these days, Philly had some great musicians and he was soon in demand for a variety of Jazz groups, vocalists, Salsa and Latin Jazz groups. Philly was also a great finishing school with all of the clubs, after work lounges and bars around the area, a real working Jazz musicians scene.
In 1998 Howard moved to Brooklyn, New York and recorded his first CD. Released in 1999, ‘The Future, The Past’ was made with some of great musicians he had played with in Philly, with pianist/composer Uri Caine, trumpeter John Swana, and drummer, Byron Lancaster. With original compositions by Britz it was a mature statement by a deeply soulful and experienced musician and composer. Quickly establishing contacts with New York players and old ex-Boston contacts he started working around the city and doing some touring.
In 2005 he released his second CD, ‘Made In Brooklyn‘ with a crew of top NY musicians, including drummers Terrion Gully and Anthony Pinciotti, saxophonists, Jacques Schwartz-Bart and Casey Benjamin and pianists James Hurt and Helio Alves The album also documented a group of musicians who were regularly getting together to play, jam and experiment and record as well as playing on gigs together. Some tracks were made in these informal sessions and some recorded more traditionally at Tedesco studios in NJ. ‘Here I Stand’, Britz’ third CD released in 2007 is perhaps his most cohesive and successful artistic statement. A quintet recording of eight original compositions featuring George Colligan on piano, David Smith, trumpet, Casey Benjamin, saxophone and Sylvia Cuenca, drums.
The CD received excellent reviews for the playing and writing, it contains all the elements that you hear in Britz’ playing, inventive melody, driving swing, latin influenced grooves, intelligent yet accessible songs.
From around 1998, Howard had also become interested in the possibilities of playing piano as well. He had long used the piano as a composing aid but had never developed the technique or chops to really play live. He set himself the task of playing piano professionally. His first serious instrument being a saxophone back in High School, he never lost the sense of loving melody and solos which are not the main role of the bass. Having worked for at the piano for many years, he recorded a CD that came out in 2013 called ‘The Feeling of Jazz’, featuring, the great saxophonist, Donny McCaslin guesting on two tracks and bassist Bill Moring and drummer Eric Halvorson.
Eric Halvorson - Drums Eric has performed with John Fedchock, Dave Liebman, Bob Sheppard, Dave Stryker, Donny McCaslin, Steve Slagle, Vic Juris, Scott Robinson, Adam Rogers, Joe Locke, Bruce Barth, Marilyn Maye, Beegie Adair, vocalist Kenny Washington, Fred Hersch, Mark Murphy, James Moody, and Bill Henderson; vocalist Lucy Woodward; toured internationally with Ute Lemper; Broadway stars Sherie Rene Scott and Christine Ebersole; composer Frank Wildhorn; songwriter and pianist Marvin Hamlisch; soul singer Ben E. King; blues artist George Kilby Jr. and the legendary Pinetop Perkins to name a few.

Stefano Pesapane is back with a brand new studio single: "Un Solo Respiro"
October 2022 - Stefano Pesapane is a drummer and artist who recently released a brand new studio single titled "Un Solo Respiro,” which translates to “A single breath.”
Born in 1962,  Stefano Pesapane has been playing the drums ever since he was only a child. By the age of 16, he was already rocking out at venues, clubs and bars, showcasing a talent that went well beyond his years. The artist actually studied in Rome, in the seventies, but later attended the world-famous Berklee College of Music during the Umbria jazz Summer School in 1988. To add to that, he has played with a wide variety of bands, touring the world and playing music in so many different capacities. Stefano Pesapane makes music that feels so extremely direct and dynamic, and he brings so much groove and soulfulness to his playing. As a drummer, Stefano Pesapane knows when to be powerful and when to be purposefully restrained. His most recent release, "Un Solo Respiro", is another milestone for Stefano Pesapane.
Now based in the Netherlands, Stefano continues to explore music in many different ways. Besides playing drums, he is a prolific multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who ended up making his solo artist debut in 2019, with the well-received album “Miles Away.”
“Un Solo Respiro” showcases yet another side to the artist’s creativity. The song is all about texture, and the psychedelic tinges of the music merge very well with the artist’s jazz backbone.
What makes this release special is definitely the fact that the artist managed to build a sound that’s incredibly impactful and diverse, exploring genres as diverse as Neo-Soul, R&B, blues, and so much more. Stefano Pesapane’s style is understated, yet passionate and rich. Every note is played with purpose and intention, and there is room for so much feeling and emotion to come through in this wonderful arrangement. The production has a retro twist, reminiscent of music from the 60s and 70s. This means that the performance is very spontaneous and there is so much warmth to the mix! There is a really awesome duet between Stefano and a female guest vocalist, and the vibe of the song really reminds of classic European songwriters such as Serge Gainsbourg (known for his world-famous duet with Jane Birkin, “Je T’aime moi non plus.”
In addition to that, the production is extraordinary. The clarity and depth of sound of the mix will not leave listeners indifferent, as the song is so easy to relate to and connect with on a much deeper level.
In conclusion, Stefano stands out as an accomplished artist who is ready for new creative challenges. He is always exploring new ways to make his songs more unique and create music that truly stands out. With “Un Solo Respiro,” he shows that he is always willing to bring new ideas to his music and expand his sonic boundaries, while still providing sounds that are inherently catchy and easy to relate to for his audience. Stefano could play anything he wants, but he is never too self-indulgent when it comes to creativity, meaning that he is not the kind of artist who is going to get lost in overly complicated musical chops and elaborate tones just for the sake of it. Everything has a purpose. He knows that spontaneity is the key to great songwriting, and his ability to create music that’s fun, edgy, and direct really speaks for itself. Having said that, this doesn’t mean that his sound lacks nuances. On the contrary, this new song is a perfect example of a beautiful and direct piece of music with a very signature tone, which is perfect to introduce new listeners to Stefano’s world of music and creativity. If this release is any indication, this talented artist has a lot to look forward to in the near future.
This release is highly recommended to fans of artists such as Prince, Donald Fagen, Steely Dan, and Miles Davis, only to mention but a few.
