been such a pain to figure out where does the white patch on the butt of the beisa oryx go. arabian oryx was easy cos it's just white all over. gemsbok I know by heart. but beisa? the more references I look at, the more the answer seems to be it ends wherever the fuck it wants so I should probably stop overthinking it since I'm mostly using the wrong colour thread for the bodies anyway (one makes do with what one can get :/) and finish stitching the damn oryx

but like! look at it!

two beisa oryx from the same area, so same subspecies. both male. one has a clear line from leg to tail, on the other one it just kinda blends in over the whole back leg. (and belly line is not consistent either!)

this one has a diagonal border from the belly stripe way up to the tail! (kind of what I'm going with)

on these three, it ends much lower and there is no white on the butt at all

there seems to be no consistency in the details of the markings which is great if you want to ID individuals (show me a livestream with beisa oryxes and I'll have them named within a month) but really fucking annoying if you just need a reference for art. they are very pretty animals at least (I mean, they're oryx, I love oryx) so I don't consider the time spent scouring the internet for references wasted but jesus 😂

and don't get me started on fringe-eared (which I decided not to use) or all the fucking pictures of gemsboks mislabeled as beisa ohmygod
