TIL a lady in Massachusetts released a hive of bees on the police officers trying to evict her and when told some of the officers are allergic, responded "Oh, you're allergic? Good."
I was thinking about bees and beekeepers and how the beekeepers don't do a whole lot directly with the bees, and for the most part the bees have a lot of freedom, but the beekeeper will step in when needed and how much that felt like Clockwork. He's always watching the timeline and therefore Danny and no matter how much humans think they have the freedom of choice, Clockwork can step in at any time to fix the timeline or nudge it in the direction he wants.
Flower talk:
I just googled death flowers so here's the quick breakdown for each flower to character:
Jazz got lilies. "White lilies, with their striking petal arrangement and captivating fragrance, have long been linked to concepts of innocence, purity, and rebirth. Across various cultures, white lilies symbolize the restoration of the soul to a tranquil state of innocence." (x) I was just thinking about how Jazz babies her brother and it takes time for her to see Danny as growing up. So in a really convoluted way she sees his innocence, perhaps more than what exists for Danny with secret ghost fighting and all.
Tucker got carnations. "Carnations serve as a heartfelt expression of love towards both living family members and those who have passed away, honoring their memory and an everlasting bond." (x) Which just felt a lot like Tucker and how much he loves his friends.
Sam got red poppies. "The red poppy holds significant commemorative value as a flower dedicated to honoring veterans." (x) Which made me think of Phantom Planet and how attached Sam was to the idea of fighting for good and Danny taking up that fight. So I was thinking along the lines of Sam and Danny's vigilantism.
Maddie and Jack got cowslip. "Cowslip flowers, also known as the “key of heaven,” hold symbolic significance related to both birth and death. In Ireland and Wales, cowslips are revered as fairy flowers, believed to possess the power to open the gateway to the enchanting realm of fairies." (x) I MEAN?!?!?! GATEWAY?????? GHOST PORTAL?!?!?!?! yeah lmao. Also their constant search and understanding for the "afterlife".
Danny got hyacinths. "Ancient Greece believed that Hyacinths were representative of bad luck, and sometimes represented bad omens, depending on when they were used and under what circumstances. They also believed the flowers could represent death due to the legacy stories told about the flower’s origins and meaning." (x) I mean.... lmao what's worse luck than tripping, electrocuting yourself, and being forced in a half life, dealing with unpredictable powers, keeping on top of school work, and fighting to keep your half life?
🌶️ fe3h, perchance? or barring that, fe fates (it's been too long since I've played awakening for me to have any real thoughts about it)
I have so many Three Houses spicy takes that their burning a hole in my pocket, so I'll pick one of my older ones:
A lot of the problems inherent to Verdant Wind would have been either fixed or mitigated by Lysithea being Claude's retainer instead of Hilda. The biggest thing this would have fixed is how scatter shot Verdant Winds is in terms of themes and ideas, especially compared to the other two routes. Lysithea being Claude's retainer would have allowed her to be more central to the main story, and tie in more tightly themes of 'finding the dark truth at the heart of Fodlan' by giving Claude a more personal and less abstract motivation to find that truth, as they search for answers for what was done to Lysithea and why.
I understand the idea behind Hilda being Claude's retainer is give a sharp contrast between Hilda's family and her upbringing, and her loyalty to a someone from the nation her family so vehemently and bitterly opposes. But the main story of Verdant Wind never properly digs into what it means that Claude is Amlyran for his and Hilda's relationship, or manages to quite marry it's various disparate ideas together into a unique whole. Even the final confrontation with the Agarthans feels stilted- something better suited for Silver Snow or Crimson Flower. Claude doesn't have a huge personal character stake in fighting the resurrected Nemesis or plunging into Shambhala, but that could have been fixed if the game centered on him in relation to Lysithea instead- and tied together the routes disparate themes through that relationship.
I went to help my mom scan documents to PDF and ended up also doing laundry, making tea, carrying, removing a storm window, installing an air conditioner, cleaning a gutter, and destroying two paper wasp nests. As incidental reward, my father invited me to come see the bees since he needed to check in on the hives anyway. If I wanted to. Did I want to?
FUCK YEAH I DID
They have four total hives, two at each end of the yard. These are down a little hill next to apple trees. There is a sign you can’t quite read in the pic that says
CAUTION
BEE’S
Yes, with the apostrophe. I think the wig maker didn’t know what they were doing, but I also like the implication that you gotta be careful, you big bumbly human, these boxes belong to the bees so use caution
Using caution and some very cool specific-ass tools, dad removed the supers one by one and pulled some of the comb frames to check on the building progress. He pointed out the many capped cells that have larvae in them - there’s going to be a population boom in this hive in a few weeks!
Here is a video of his mini lecture.
Not pictured: the bees crawling between my bare fingers with their little tickley legs. Also not pictured: the bees that landed on my phone screen.
These bees are all gathered at the entrance to the hive and using their wings to pull warm air out to cool it!
