this is gonna be me projecting (and also losing my FUCKING MIND over finishing greywaren five minutes ago) but is it just me or was everyone in that goddamn book autistic
first of all: the declan childhood flashbacks...that boy is autistic as SHIT. i'm giving maggie the benefit of the doubt here and telling myself that she was implying that and not just making a joke about "haha guy is uptight and no fun as an adult he only sorted things and enforced rules and structure as a kid cus that's funny" because oh my god?? also as an adult he has "declanisms"- phrases he uses for certain situations like categories...scripting... declan baby. he is the most autistic babygirl i have ever seen holy shit oh my g
i've also always related to ronan and a big part of that is because i've always read him as autistic. i mean i've always read all the original trc characters as autistic, to be fair. but i mean? are t they? (yes, they are, because i said so. it's my special interest, i get to assign the autism)
now i understand that the larger metaphor is about chronic illness, and i'm in love with that. i don't think autism is the main thing there. but i don't think it's not there, just as depression and bpd (imo but thats another post) aren't not there. (it's art, it's literature, it's open for interpretation.) but what i keep thinking about: chronic illnesses like epilepsy, hypermobility disorders, mitochondrial disorders, and several others mt end to be comorbid with autism. and as someone who is both autistic and deals with chronic illness/chronic pain (and who has several friends who are in the same boat), autism and chronic illness often seem intertwined to me. idk, just thoughts
ALSO. y'all heard people comparing being autistic/neurodivergent to speaking a different "language" than allistic/neurotypical people? THE WHOLE THINF ABOUT THE DREAM WORLD SPEAKING A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE THAT COULDNT BE TRANSLATED INTO ANY HUMAN UNDERSTANDING. thinking also about how autistic people so often feel like (and are compared to) aliens or otherworldly beings. how changeling children in folklore were probably just autistic kids but were etched in canon as erdrich creatures. how sometimes i wanna become that eldritch creature that others seem to think i am...
also, also: the theme of masks and "other selves" running throughout the entire series, even in trc. declan is the most obvious masker as an adult; he has to create a persona and STICK TO A SCRIPT OF THW SAME WORDS ALL THE TIME in order to feel like he's functioning and got his shit together. and then hennessey and jordan--hennessey creates a version of herself that she feels is more palatable, more socially acceptable, and that's who does all the soft skills of their operation early on. adam creates a false version of himself. ronan lies to himself about who and what he really is. matthew discovers that he's just been acting like who others want him to act like all along--that he's been suppressing his emotions and wants and needs in order to make others happy. and i know that this whole theme can translate into a lot of things, but what i've read it as since cdth is masking with autism/neurodivergence.
anyway. this has been my greywaren manifesto. i am sorry. (i'll be back later.)

Note
oh i didn't know you liked ronan's character more than your do adam's! what is it that you like about him?? 💛
Ronan’s definitely one of my favourite characters. Adam isn’t because, according to me ... and here’s the absolute nuts part ... Adam’s not exactly a book character.
Adam’s pretty much a real person.
And it’s embarrassing to admit it because I pride myself on being a logical and rational person. I usually have a healthy perspective on actual people in the real world, let alone those I meet in fictional places. I don’t get super invested in things like this.
But. Here’s the thing. I’ve read a LOT of books. Adam is the only character that got me so worked up that I had to put down on paper the inner workings of his mind and start writing fic.
In that way, technically, taking my ridiculously sentimental view out of the equation, I suppose Adam Parrish is my favourite character ever.
But it’s still not accurate to say that.
I simply cannot put Adam Parrish on the same list as Bruce Wayne or Elizabeth Bennet or Ty Blackthorne. Because, they are, very clearly, fictional. And Adam... well, Adam isn’t even in the same universe as them.
This is Maggie’s true gift - to create archetypal people that not only come across as complex and authentic, but also make you care about them.
I haven’t read any other books where I’ve identified so much with a character (to some extent I identify with Ronan too - but much more superficially).
To compare, let us take another series with several MCs and ships very dear to me: The Shadowhunter Chronicles. I adore Tessa Grey, Jem Carstairs and Will Herondale, and all permutations and combinations of them. Malec and Kitty & Magnus and Ty are some others I love.
But how many of them do I identify with?
Zero.
I don’t need them to live and love like I do with Adam. I write IOP mainly for him, and for him and Ronan to have the experiences I think they should have (And also because I totally GET Pynch and their dynamic - well, I think so anyway).
And, like Adam, I’m very much star-struck and in love with Ronan Lynch.
Ronan’s incredibly complicated and has so many facets to him that should not in fact be able to exist within one person (even if they are fictional) and still seem cohesive and have a believable ... gestalt.
His rage and his tenderness. His sensitivity and his abrasiveness. His ability to think outside the box yet be blind to certain basic things. His equal capacity for self-loathing and worship. His passion and his depression. His innocence and his street-cred. The beauty and the horrors that live inside him. How he’s an asshole and an angel all at the same time.
And I’m not even talking about any of his fantastic power and magic. Neither am I talking about Adam’s.
I think it’s clear that Ronan is so real because he’s close to being a self-insert of Maggie’s. And I can imagine that she’s as compelling and contradictory as he is.
Similarly, I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that Adam was crafted from the bones of someone Maggie really knew and loved, though the idea for him may have been sparked by a strange boy on a plane. Because everything about him rings totally true and is note perfect - including the depiction of him as an abuse-survivor, and his struggles with his self-image and personal power.
He’s so real, in fact, that it’s hard to believe he isn’t.
So, yes.
Ronan Lynch is one of my favourite fictional characters.
Adam Parrish is my favourite fictional person.
Pynch is my favourite fictional ship.
That’s the TL;DR for this very unnecessarily long and convoluted and batshit crazy reply to your question about Ronan - which I answered about Adam instead.
Sorry!
Thank you, as always, for your super Ask <3

Are dreamers descendants to fallen angels?
So I’ve been thinking a lot about the origin of dreamers, especially in relation to Ronan’s faith and his anxiety about creating life - a job he feels should be exclusive to God.
This is going to be long so the short story: Maybe dreamers are descendants to fallen angels?
Here’s my long ass thesis on why I think so:
Since CDTH I’ve seen this quote a lot:
Tumblr media
In a wider sense it doesn’t have to mean anything, just a powerful ending to Bryde’s cheesy monologue about Ronan being too good for basic humanity, but I immediately read it literally.
-       do you long back?
And just two pages afterwards we get this:
Tumblr media
Coincidence? I think not.
Bryde knows what Ronan is and where he comes from - the sky.
The question of “what am I” is something Ronan struggles with during the entire course of TRC and a vital part of his storyline.
And it’s always this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not who am I, What am I.
During the first four books Ronan struggles both with this huge existential dilemma of “what” and with more mundane questions regarding “who” he is. I think Ronan’s coming of age-arc, especially the “why do you hate yourself”/ “I don’t” - scene in TRK is one of the most moving scenes in YA. I read that as being about “who” he is. And In CDTH he’s older, he’s figured a lot of shit out. There are no negative feelings left about him being gay for example. Not in relation to his family, himself or to his religion.
But he still has a lot of negative feelings and anxiety about being able to create life. He still struggles with his identity as a dreamer alongside his identity as a catholic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ronan being religious adds so much to his character and this is why I can’t help but read A LOT into the religious symbolism. And it’s there.
Maggie herself posted this a while ago to clear up why Ronan gets so mad in BLLB when the copy of him dies. It clarifies multiple things - that Ronan is very much stuck in toxic masculinity and refuses to show vulnerability while also being very vulnerable, as well as how the situation mirrors his suicide-attempt, which is obviously triggering. But for this theme I want to highlight these two paragraphs:
“First, the setting. Adam is not religious, but Ronan is, and St. Agnes is a place he goes with the broken remains of his family. Now Ronan takes Adam — someone Ronan has only just allowed himself to admit internally that he likes, a lot — not just to the church, but to a private part of the church Ronan frequents on his own. “
And
“But to Ronan, it’s not just a copy. It’s a person who just happens to look like him. Remember that Ronan has spent his life loving dreamed people just as hard as real people. Ronan has spent enough time with Matthew and Aurora to know that even though they came from dreams, their feelings are real. They are not disposable. This other Ronan is really terrified, really in pain, and really dying.
And the real Ronan killed him. He’s killed someone.”
This is one of the very few times Maggie has explained something that isn’t explicit in the book. As we know Maggie is a major spokesperson for “the only things canon are the things in the book” but here she adds additional information. Why? Because it’s really, really important to Ronan’s character. Both the religion and his feelings about creating life. Especially these two combined.
He hates himself for a lot of things, and he hates himself for the ability to create -and therefore take away- life. Something only God is allowed to do.
Tumblr media
Well yes Adam, maybe there are two gods in this church. Or something like it.
So - fallen angels? What does that mean really?
The story of fallen angels differ a lot from religion to religion, I’ll focus on the Christian tradition since that’s what our lord and savior Ronan Lynch would like. There isn’t a lot of Bible stories about it, it’s more of a tradition arising from later accounts in religious texts and poetry.
The Devil is a fallen angel who together with a bunch of other angels rebelled against God and was expelled from Heaven to Earth.
In some older interpretations the “angels” on Earth had children with humans and created giants, who in time became demons. Or, if you’re writing YA fantasy with a religious MC, maybe these descendants of angels became dreamers.
Lucifer rebelled against God because he too wanted the power that God possessed.
“Lucifer apparently became so impressed with his own beauty, intelligence, power, and position that he began to desire for himself the honor and glory that belonged to God alone. The sin that corrupted Lucifer was self-generated pride.”
I sure think that sounds like Bryde, and it sounds a lot like the sin Ronan fears God will judge him for.
And on the subject of the Devil. Who in this series is often referred to as a “devil of a boy?”
Tumblr media
It’s our man, Ronan.
A quick search of the word “Devil” in the Raven Cycle (1-4) led me to a number of passages, mostly as part of a saying, but at some occasion to specifically describe someone, or as a direct reference to someone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ronan, Niall, Kavinsky and Aurora. Dreamers and their dreams.
Coincidence? I think not.
The same search in Call Down the Hawk I would say really confirms this recognition of mine. It has for starters this wonderful paragraph:
Tumblr media
But it also broadens the parable to all of the Lynch brothers.
Tumblr media
The upper quote about the three brothers all being handsome devils is the only time not even Matthew can avoid the metaphor. A character who up until then has only been compared to an angel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Contradiction? No, not in the question of descendants to fallen angels.
A creature who are - by definition - both angel and devil, savior and sinner, companion of God as well as a child of Satan.
We don’t know for sure yet how one becomes a dreamer. But we do know that it in some way it’s inherited. In some peculiar way from parent to child. From one devil father to one of his devil sons, the one he created together with another one of his creations. Because Ronan therefore is a clone of Niall? Is Hennessy a clone of her mother? Kavinsky one of his parents? Maybe the next two books will tell. Regardless I still like the idea that they all descend from the first angels on earth, mixing with humans.
I also just have to mention that Ronan not only dream of the sky, but also on multiple occasions dream about flying. Not as a bird, but with his own wings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what do I think this will mean in the big scheme of things?
Not a lot honestly! I’m not even sure I’m arguing that this will be a plot point.
But I do think the paradoxical identity in descending from something so torn between good/evil is fucking perfect for Ronan. Someone who’s constantly torn between his own fuck-ups and wanting to do the right thing.
Who creates marvelous life in form of magical animals, angelic brothers and light where there needs to be light, but who also creates monsters, horrors and dangers.
Who wants to protect the world from climate change and protect the people he loves from danger and for all we know might instead accidentally end the world.
Who turns to God and fears hell at the same time as he’s presenting himself to the world as a devil of a boy.
I just think it’s beautiful, whether Maggie has a storyline planned with this or not.
Tumblr media
So I’ll just end this thread with the upper picture and with the quote describing Ronans’ birth.

Best Female Spy Movies & TV Shows to Watch After Black Widow
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Black Widow is out, bringing the women-led spy genre to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Natasha Romanov in the time between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War as she works to bring down the Red Room, aka the Soviet-affiliated program that took her as a baby and brainwashed her into becoming an assassin. While the women-centric spy drama may be new for the MCU, it’s has been one of the most prolific and entertaining action sub-genres over the past few decades. If you’ve watched Black Widow and you’re looking for more taut and emotional spy thrillers to check out, we have some TV and film suggestions for you…
Hanna
Many have seen the 2011 action feature directed by Joe Wright and starring Saoirse Ronan as a girl assassin raised in the wilderness by her spy father Eric Bana, but the TV series based on the film is even better. Currently moving towards its third season, the Amazon Prime series has so much more room to delve into the nuances of the film’s premise, especially in its second season, which moves completely past the events of the movie. While the first season leans into the coming-of-age themes inherent in Hanna venturing out into the world for the very first time, the second season chooses to delve further into the spy drama of it all, expanding the series’ focus to center some of the other teen super soldiers born into the same program Hanna was rescued from as a baby. If you would have liked to learn more about the other Widows Natasha and Yelena are working to save in Black Widow, then Hanna is the show for you.
Atomic Blonde
Stylish and featuring some of the best fight scenes this side of John Wick (the film’s director David Leitch, also worked on John Wick), Atomic Blonde stars the incomparable Charlize Theron as a spy tasked with finding a lost of double agents that is being smuggled into the West on the eve of the Berlin Wall’s collapse. Like Black Widow, Atomic Blonde only has so much narrative time to delve into the complexities of this set up and setting and, maybe sensing it won’t be able to do them justice, instead leans into the aesthetic and action of this world. It works, thanks in no small part to performers like Theron, James McAvoy, and Sofia Boutella, who bring to life the stress, violence, and desperation of this intersection of place and time far better than its script.
Queen Sono
American and British spy dramas often have white westerners traveling to other, poorer nations for missions, depicting a real-life colonial power structure while rarely interrogating it. Queen Sono, billed as Netflix‘s first African original series (it is a South African series, specifically), is a spy drama that centers Black characters and community in fun and powerful ways, bringing the familiar tropes of the genre to what will probably be a new setting for most American viewers. Queen Sono follows South African spy Queen (Pearl Thusi) as she works to balance her dangerous and clandestine missions with her personal life. Funny, emotional, and action-packed, Queen Sono is a must-see for any spy drama lover looking for something new—and it’s a damn shame Netflix won’t be moving forward with a second season.
Alias
To me, Alias will always be the original. The female-led spy drama was on network television when I was a teenager, and its combination (especially in the first season and a half) of fierce fight sequences, tense spycraft, and character-driven drama made it my favorite show. Like Black Widow, Alias is grounded in family drama, most especially the father-daughter relationship between Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) and spy dad Jack Bristow (Victor Garber), but later bringing in other familial dynamics as well. The series starts as your classic double agent story, as Sydney decides to take down the agency she works for after they have her fiance killed, but, in classic J.J. Abrams style, the plot really spirals out from there—for better and worse. Airing for five season and more than 105 episodes, if you’re looking for more family-driven spy drama, Alias is the show for you.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Deutschland 86
All three “seasons” of this excellent German-language Cold War spy series that follows an East German boy forced to become a spy in West Germany are worth watching, but the second installment, set in 1986, gives us viewers many more lady spy characters to be impressed by compared to the original Deutschland 83 story. Main character Jonas remains the protagonist of this tale, but his Aunt Lenora, probably the best spy in the entire show, takes an even bigger role in Deutschland 1986 and the subsequent Deutschland 89, as does her lover/partner Rose, a South African operative working for the African National Congress and played by the MCU’s Florence Kasumba. Throw in Jonas’ baby mama Annett, back in East Germany working as a junior intelligence agent, and the mysterious  Brigitte, and you have a second season teeming with complex and cutthroat women spies.
Nikita
This highly underrated spy series ran for four action-packed seasons on The CW before totally sticking its landing in 2013. Technically an adaptation of the 1997 La Femme Nikita TV series, which was in turn an adaptation of Luc Besson’s 1990 action film of the same name, Nikita quickly surpassed both originals to become one of the best female-led spy stories of all time. Starring Maggie Q as the titular Nikita, the series began after the former spy has vowed to take down the secret agency that trained her, known as the Division. Our story begins when Nikita plants her protege, Alex, within Division, with a plan to work together to take the agency down. Of course, going undercover comes with its own emotional and ethical complications, and Alex may not know all that there is to know about her mentor Nikita, and Nikita’s role in Alex’s tragic past. With a stellar supporting cast that includes Melinda Clarke and Xander Berkeley, Nikita was far better than it needed to be and, if your a fan of the action spy genre, is definitely worth watching.
Killing Eve
Maybe it was the Russian accent, but Yelena has mad Villanelle vibes in Black Widow, and I mean that in the least psychopathic way possible. Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably aware of this BBC America series starring Sandra Oh as a bored MI-5 agent and Jodie Comer as the spy-assassin she becomes obsessed with catching, but if you haven’t yet checked it out and are looking for another female-driven spy story with plenty of banter, then Killing Eve is the show for you. The second season gets a little rocky, but with a riveting season three and the announcement that season four will be the show’s last, now is the time to jump on the Killing Eve bandwagon.
Little Drummer Girl
In terms of tone or style, Little Drummer Girl shares little with Black Widow—it’s much more geopolitical thriller than superhero action—but I’m including the British spy series on the list because it does share a star with Black Widow. Yelena’s Florence Pugh plays an aspiring actress named Charlie who is recruited by Mossad to infiltrate a Palestinian group planning an attack in Europe. Based on a novel of the same name by acclaimed spy author John le Carré, the six-episode series is directed by Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook and co-stars Michael Shannon and Alexander Skarsgård, and the talent is not wasted. The miniseries delves much more into the ethics of spycraft than Black Widow is able or comfortable doing, asking difficult questions about how violence and manipulation are used and justified across national lines. If you’re looking for a spy drama that isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions, then Little Drummer Girl is for you.
Gunpowder Milkshake
OK, this one is more of an assassin drama than a spy drama, but the cast is too good not to include it on the list. Starring Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan and Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey as a pair of daughter/mother assassins, Gunpowder Milkshake is another action thriller that is all in with the familial dynamics. Past the two stars, Gunpowder Milkshake also features the iconic Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gugino, rounding out the cast of action women. The film doesn’t drop on Netflix (in the U.S.) and theaters (elsewhere) until Friday, but you’ll be ready.

Mister Impossible by Maggie Stiefvater
"'Mother Mary,' Declan said with exasperation. 'Do we have to do this every day? Just say you want a therapist for your birthday.'"
Year Read: 2021
Rating: 4/5
About: There are spoilers ahead for Call Down the Hawk. Ronan, Hennessy, and Bryde are on a quest to restore the ley lines and make the world safer for dreamers. Carmen and Liliana are part of the organization of Moderators determined to hunt down dreamers and make sure they don't end the world. Meanwhile, Matthew struggles with the reality of being a dreamed person, and Declan and Jordan search the black market for something that can keep dreams awake even when their dreamers are gone. Can dreamers be saved, or will they inadvertently bring about the end of the world? Trigger warnings: death (on-page), domestic terrorism, explosions, car accident, guns, violence, injury, self-loathing.
Thoughts: There's rarely a chance that a Maggie Stiefvater novel is going to go wrong for me. They're always well-plotted, exquisitely written, and filled with fascinating, three-dimensional characters. I always enjoy being in her worlds, pretty much regardless of the subject matter. The distinctions only emerge when I start comparing her books against each other, and that's a matter of personal preference more than anything. In that respect, The Dreamer Trilogy doesn't touch the magic of The Raven Cycle or The Scorpio Races for me, but that might be an inherent flaw of companion novels. Keep following characters we love, and things are bound to get messy for them.
So while I enjoyed this book and I'll likely read it again, it didn't really move me. Part of it, I think, is a lack of interest in the side characters. I'm tangentially interested in Carmen's story, but not enough to be invested in her POV chapters, and I find Bryde tedious. He's that pretentious hipster in your philosophy class who thinks he knows everything and talks incessantly without ever actually saying anything of substance. Ronan's character is somehow diminished standing next to him. Kavinsky isn't in this book, but it feels like he's all over it regardless, or maybe it's just that Ronan's current struggle echoes the one from The Dream Thieves. I'd hoped he'd grown past some of that, but he is still very young and traumatized and, realistically, humans don't always manage to work through their issues on the first round. (Also, where is Adam for this entire book?) As baffling as it is to admit, I enjoyed Declan's chapters the most. He feels the most like TRC-era Stiefvater, and I really enjoy the complicated relationships between Declan/Jordan and Jordan/Hennessy. Hennessy's arc is especially good in this book, and while I always liked her, I love her a bit more now.
Another problem for me is how heavily steeped in art this book is. It feels like there's more discussion of art in this one book than there is about cars in the whole of The Raven Cycle. (I'm exaggerating, but only enough to enjoy myself.) I'm not a car enthusiast, but somehow Stiefvater made them interesting. I can't say the same for the number of weird paintings discussed in detail in this book, and I only managed to summon interest for the imaginary ones. The rest of the plot is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, not because it's badly done but because I hate to see things go so wrong for characters I love. The characters are college-aged now and, in many ways, the subject matter has advanced as well. This feels much closer to adult or new adult territory than it does to YA. TRC is about the breathless wonder of discovering magic; TDT takes on the very real, often devastating consequences of that magic.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Book Tag
I recently watched and finished Avatar: The Last Airbender for the first time in my life and it was sooooo good. I wanted to do a book tag to celebrate this event so here we are! This tag was created by Hannah from A Clockwork Reader!
Water:
Katara & Sokka: Best sibling relationship // Declan, Ronan, and Matthew Lynch from The Dreamer trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater
These three are far from perfect, but they are my favorite sibling trio. They are so different from each other but it adds to their dynamic. They can never fully understand each other and the choices they make but they’re there to care for the other when they’re in trouble. Sure, they don’t get along a lot, but not every set of siblings does. One of my favorite things about this trio is that they had a period of time where they hated each other and wanted nothing to do with each other (mainly Declan and Ronan) because of what had happened to their family but overtime, they learn to mend that wound and grow closer together. I just love my angsty boys.
Yue: Favorite star crossed lovers // Emma & Julian from The Dark Artifices series by Cassandra Clare
I know that a lot of people do not like this couple, and that’s valid. I really love this couple though. What can I say? I just love my angsty characters. But really, it’s the yearning and the “will they come out of this situation alive” pain that fuels my love for this couple. Their relationship is filled with so much intensity, and then you add in that factor of “we don’t know if they’ll have a happy ending” and it just hurts, but in a good way. They are strong-willed characters who have so much pain built up inside them and the one thing they so desperately want is each other and to be together but they can’t. Say what you want about this couple, but they are one of my top tier OTPs.
Blood Bending: A book with disturbing/unsettling concept // Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman
It feels odd to choose the second book in the series to talk about, but this book has one scene that almost made me vomit, and that has never ever happened to me before. This entire series’ concept is deeply unsettling because it’s set in a world where technology is so advanced that even death by natural causes has been conquered so people called ‘Scythes’ are tasked to keep the population at bay. Within that world, there is corruption with how Scythes choose to kill their victims. Before I say what I say, just know that I really like this series. Anyway. I have never been more nervous and angry while reading a book and I thought I had reached my limit with book one, but no. Book two was just a fucking treat. The ending was fucked. The buildup to it was fucked. What Goddard did to Tyger was what made me almost vomit, and just thinking about it and Goddard makes me want to rip my head off because what the fuck. I still haven’t read the third book yet, but I will. Soon. Maybe.
Earth:
Toph: A character whose strength surprised you/or surprised the other characters in the book // Kell Maresh from the Shades of Magic series by V.E Schwab
We all know Kell to be a powerful magician, but at the time when I read this, I didn’t really understand how powerful he was capable of being. He’s one of the few Antari in that world so obviously it would make sense that he has a huge amount of power. It wasn’t until the second book when it clicked in my head that Kell has the power to do so much more destruction. In the tournament scenes through Lila’s perspective, I started to see the extent of his powers because of how much he was holding back and it blew my freaking mind.
The Tales of Ba Sing Se: Best short story/poetry collection // none
I have not read a lot of short story/poetry collections that really stand out to me so yeah, none for me.
Kyoshi Warriors: Best warrior character // Helene Aquilla from An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir
I love Helene Aquilla so much. She’s such a badass and it’s great. What I really love about her is that she’s not just a pretty face who wields a sword around. Yes, she’s strong physically and mentally at the beginning of the series, but during the journey she goes on, all of that is broken down until she’s at her most vulnerable. We are constantly seeing the turmoil inside her and it adds so much to her character. She’s far from perfect but those imperfections are what makes her such a strong character.
Fire:
Zuko: Best redemption arc/a redemption arc that should have happened // Matthias Helvar from the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo
Literally, almost everyone hates him and I understand why but the amount of growth he goes through is one of the best things about his character. Sure, he’s a straight pasty white boy who, on the outside, is boring compared to the other five (or six???) characters but seeing his development from being a bigoted asshole to a more understanding and caring character was something I loved reading about. It takes a lot to unlearn the things you grew up thinking was true and heavily believed in, and to see a different view of the world. I do understand the meaning of his end but there was so much more potential for character to really grow even more than it did and I will forever be bitter.
Iroh: Wisest character // Evelyn Hugo from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Evelyn Hugo is such a great character. She starts from the bottom and then climbs her way to the top by doing things that are considered to be not ethically correct. She’s aware of all of that and yet she feels little to no shame about it because she did what she had to for the dream she wanted. She makes mistakes and has flaws but that never brings down her character. After all of that, she still holds herself up. She went through so much in her life and throughout the book, she provides so much insight on the choices she made and how they affected her.
Azula: Best downfall // Bonnie from The End of the Fucking World S2
I know there’s a comic but I’m going to talk about the Netflix series, and I know it’s not a book but I really wanted to talk about Bonnie and her downfall. Would you call it a downfall? I don’t know really, but I guess I’ll consider it as one. Her downfall was by far the most emotional that I have ever seen/read about. I feel like episode 7 was just a perfect episode to capture Bonnie’s character and the downfall she has. Not to mention that it’s a fucking great episode and it will remain one of my favorites. Bonnie is a character who grew up with a lack of love and has seemingly detached herself from a lot of things and people. I say this because for the majority of the show, it seems as thought Bonnie is unfeeling and emotionless, but there are moments when her emotions just override and are visually expressed. In episode 7 when she confronts James and Alyssa, Alyssa asks Bonnie, “what happens next?” and it literally clicked in my head that Bonnie never really had a sense of purpose in the world until she met the professor. From there, her purpose was to be his “little salmon” but that ended up not happening and from there, her purpose is to get revenge for him by hunting down and killing James and Alyssa. From there, what does Bonnie do? There’s nothing left. The entire diner scene is just fantastic yet so heartbreaking. At the end of the episode, you just get Bonnie saying, “I’m really tired” and it hits so hard because of all that Bonnie went through.
Air:
Appa: Favorite fictional animal/pet // none
I actually have not read a lot of books with a fictional animal/pet that is super prominent in the story or that I have a big attachment to, so again, none.
Aang: Purest cinnamon roll // Aled Last from Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
Aled Last deserves the whole world and that’s a fact. He has such a pure soul and good intentions, and the fact that he goes through so much hurt in the book, hurts a lot. Aled is just a character you want to hug and protect. It’s so difficult to explain why Aled is a pure cinnamon roll because he just is and you just have to read the book to understand that this boy deserves nothing but love.
Avatar State: A stubborn character/a character that struggles with letting go // Elias Veturius from An Ember in the Ashes series by Sabaa Tahir
I love Elias Veturius with my whole heart and mind and soul, and you should too because he’s just a freaking amazing character. The journey he goes through in this series is so fucking painful because he constantly has to do things and become things that he doesn’t want to but he has to for the sake of keeping the ones he loves safe AND IT’S NOT FAIR THAT HE HAS TO GO THROUGH SO MUCH PAIN. We are always seeing Elias at war with himself and duty, and from this, he does make decisions that causes consequences but ultimately, he chooses duty, leaving the ones he loves behind in order to protect them.

How many stars did you give to CDTH? :O and also, what was your fav TRC book?
Oh, I mean, I don’t usually really give stars because my brain tends to come up with something ridiculous like ‘4,62 stars’, which is nooot a thing :D, but I enjoyed CDTH a lot! It’s really suspenseful and atmospheric. In fact, as a book I think I in some ways enjoyed it more than quite a bit of TRC? Which isn’t a statement on how much I e.g. love characters or on how invested I was, because TRC was greaaat at making me love characters, but more a statement on what I feel the book sets out to do. It feels like it’s very successful at that thing that Maggie strives for - that odd mix of modern fantasy and supernatural thriller and magical underworld shenanigans. In TRC, some of that felt less, hm, harmonious to me. Also I really love Ronan in CDTH, because I think I like him way better when we’re actually in his head compared to when we only see him from outside and get too many characters fawning over how cool he is :P. So, I’m pretty excited about the rest of Dreamer Trilogy!
Hmmm hard choice, I read them all in one go when they were already out, so in some ways they also melt into each other in my head. I’m tempted to say ‘TRB’ because that’s the book that ultimately made me interested enough in the world and the characters to go read the rest, right. But if I had to pick - maybe I’d have to go with BLLB. I don’t even have a good justification for this. Maybe it’s just the Adam-lover in me, because Adam’s arc is really great in that one. Well, also, we get the real beginnings of the Adam / Ronan romance, so that’s nice. And a lot of Fox Way, which I love. Or maybe it’s just that the Greenmantles will always be hilarious to me. I guess we’ll never know.

Adam Parrish is bisexual
So I’m reading The Raven Cycle, right?
And so I like to scroll through Tumblr for fanart or random posts or headcanons or incorrect quotes or whatever the fuck.
And for whatever reason I keep seeing people either forgetting or ignoring the fact that Adam is bisexual. No, it’s never speicified and it shouldn’t be; it’s as obvious as Ronan being gay (who never outright said it either). Look, it’s possible for people to be attracted to both girls and boys. As a pansexual myself I can tell you that it’s very much possible. It has been forever. It’s not a new development. And ignoring the fact that Adam is bi doesn’t make him any less bi. Ronan is gay and Adam is bi. It’s explicitly shown multiple times throughout the series that Adam like girls AND boys.
(For those who will demand proof, he was genuinely attracted to Blue and it was HER who in the end wasn’t attracted to Adam and broke it off, not the other way around, Adam moved on because he knows you don’t choose who you fall in love with despite being heartbroken about it. Both Adam and Gansey stared at Orla when she went with them to the lake in her bikini because they’re both disasters and that scene was hilarious. And yes, he is so 100% a little bit in love with Gansey but so is everyone let’s face it. And yes, later he falls in love with Ronan, who had a crush on Adam for a while.)
just because Adam isn’t gay and has (possibly) had crushes on girls AND boys when he was younger, does NOT mean he doesn’t love Ronan, okay? It just means he like more than one gender. And blatantly making posts about how y’all want to ‘ignore’ or ‘forget’ the fact that Adam dated Blue (ergo, had a brief dating life with a girl) is either biphobic or insinuating that Adam is only a good and interesting character because he’s in a relationship with Ronan. And I don’t know which is worse, being biphobic and ignoring the fact that Adam is NOT GAY or seeing Adam as an object made special because he’s in a relationship with a male.
And it prompts the question of why you would want to ignore/forget Adam and Blue’s relationship. Like, it’s not the way they acted towards each other, it couldn’t be. Because neither Adam (who cared and loved Blue deeply) and Blue (who desperately wanted to be in love with Adam) were being hurtful to the other. Blue wanted to reciprocate Adam’s feelings, she wanted it to be him and not Gansey in the first book, she wanted to tell him she couldn’t kiss him but she didn’t want to scare him away by calling him her true love. It broke her heart to tell Adam she didn’t love him, but she didn’t want to lie to him about that.
Adam truly cared for Blue. He always brushed his arm or hand against hers as small signs of affection. He compared her to a heart attack in the way he loved her (the way he also compared Ronan, which leads me to believe that when this boy falls in love, he falls deep). He wanted to kiss her but accepted the fact that she didn’t want to (my man RESPECTED HER BOUNDARIES Y’ALL).
Mainly, it was both Blue and Adam’s first real relationship. It was the first time a boy showed any interest in Blue (a boy that wasn’t an asshole that is to say). It was the first time a girl cared this much for Adam. It was a short relationship that didn’t work for many reasons, but it was true that Blue and Adam cared for each other, even if it wasn’t romantically in the end.
What is wrong with that? Nothing horrendous happened. The breakup wasn’t messy. The relationship wasn’t toxic. If y’all can give me a valid reason to want to forget their relationship, shoot. I’ll bite. No, they weren’t meant to be. But that’s no reason to try to ignore it.
Erasing this part of Adam’s sexual orientation is either because y’all value Adam and Ronan as a gay relationship more than as individuals (please don’t do that to these two amazing characters who have just as much value individually as well as together) or because y’all are biphobic. It’s the only way I can possibly see this. And both make me equally mad.
Bisexuals exist and Adam Parrish is as bi as Ronan Lynch is gay and nothing you say or ignore will change that because the only one with the power to choose these things is Maggie Stiefvater, the goddamn author of this series. And she made Adam bisexual and Ronan gay. Y’all will have to learn to live with that.

hello hello!! i hope everyone is doing great this fine staurday night. welcome back to saturday night reviews!!
this week, we’re doing call down the hawk by maggie stiefvater! i’d been looking forward to reading this book since it came out, to the point that i put the release date in my calendar. i finally found it in my local library and even though i promised to myself i wouldn’t borrow any books (futile, really) i still walked out with it.
i’m glad i did!
Ronan Lynch is a dreamer. He can pull both curiosities and catastrophes out of his dreams and into his compromised reality.
Jordan Hennessy is a thief. The closer she comes to the dream object she is after, the more inextricably she becomes tied to it.
Carmen Farooq-Lane is a hunter. Her brother was a dreamer . . . and a killer. She has seen what dreaming can do to a person. And she has seen the damage that dreamers can do. But that is nothing compared to the destruction that is about to be unleashed. . . .
my final rating is: 5/5 stars
i loved this book. i want to reread this book fifty different times. i want to put this book up on my shelf and make a little shrine for it, complete with (electric) candles and flowers.
i love the way maggie writes. she’s one of my inspirations both style and plot wise, and the possibility of it being missing was one of the things i was worried about in c.d.t.h. i’m very glad it wasn’t; not only is it fun to read, it contributes a lot to the mystery and dreaminess of the book.
the characters were also really well written. we got to learn more about characters we didn’t see much of in the raven cycle, and the ones we already knew we got to learn a lot more of. ronan and adam are still my favorites, that will never ever change.
this is a definite recommendation. i would suggest starting with the raven cycle series first, because a lot of the details and things mentioned in call down the hawk make a lot more sense and are just so much more fun to read with the context of the series.
as always, a little disclaimer. everything i say in this review is purely my own opinion. i don’t hate any of the authors i review; writing a book is hard work and i admire them for doing it. all the comments i make are from my point of view and i do not mean to offend anyone.
please feel free to let me know what you think of this book, and this review!! have you ever read marissa meyer’s work? do you have any preferences??
i also have an announcement! starting today, i’ll be putting out two reviews a month rather than four. not only would it be a lot easier to keep up with, it also gives me time to read more books and have a variety on which to review!! so with that, i’ll see you all soon!!

i was tagged by @deerlovelylily to do this like... 84 years ago aaa i’m sorry molly ilu!! thanks for the tag 💕
author name: starsandgutters (on ao3)
fandoms you write for: there’s been a few, but the only one i’m currently really active in is the raven cycle (and now the dreamer trilogy will be added to that, i suppose!); however, the fandom i have written the most (or longest) fics for remains supernatural
where you post: all my fic lives either on my ao3 or on the writing tag on my tumblr. i try to keep them both equally caught up, but sometimes with longer fic i will only post a preview on tumblr and the full text on ao3, or with short drabbles i may just keep them on my tumblr and not bother uploading them to ao3. consistency, eh? i also have a wordpress for poetry, but it doesn’t see much use.
most popular oneshot: mmm i basically only write oneshots, and i’m not sure what constitues “most popular”... if we base this on tumblr notes, my most popular fic is “ink riddles” [tumblr/ao3]; if we base it on ao3 kudos, it’s “the stars exploding (we’ll be fireproof)” [tumblr/ao3] for trc fandom, while my supernatural fic “five times castiel spoke to dean in a foreign language, and one time dean returned the favour” [tumblr/ao3] is my most kudos’d one overall.
most popular multi-chapter story: the only multi/chapter story i’ve completed was my dean/castiel big bang, “to mend the cracks with gold” [tumblr/ao3]. i’m still quite fond of it as it’s the only novel-length thing i’ve written :’)
favourite story you wrote: mmh it IS probably going to be the abovementioned “the stars exploding (we’ll be fireproof)”, just because it includes some of my favourite things, aka: toga parties! comparing your loved ones to gods and mythological creatures! tad carruthers’ unrequited crush on adam! ronan loving horrifying baby animals! flirting on a balcony while yearning! me coming up with pre-trk theories and being clowned when maggie josses them!
story you were nervous to post: oh, definitely my latest one, “with quiet words i’ll lead you in” [tumblr/ao3]. i mean i’m always kinda nervous when i post something but with this one i knew it mattered, because it was one discussing ronan’s sexual assault and i wanted to handle it sensitively and respectfully, while still keeping it realistic for the characters’ personalities. i wrote it for myself first and foremost, but i hoped it would be helpful, rather than upsetting, for people who have gone through assault.
how do you pick your titles: i’m going to be real honest -- unless i start from a specific titular concept (e.g. my supernatural big bang was always going to go with kintsugi/kintsukuroi), or sudden inspiration stirkes, it IS going to be a song lyric. i’m just a lyric hoe like that (and i’m bad at coming up with titles).
do you outline: i usually write myself notes in the doc itself, such as [then this happens] or [fill this part in with character X freaking out], so i can go back to them as inspiration comes and goes, but as i mostly write oneshots i don’t usually need elaborate outlines.
how many of your stories are complete: as i mostly write oneshots... basically all of them except for 3 attempts at multi/chapter fic (as i said before... my only completed multichapter was the deancas big bang, so i should probably stick to shorter pieces. :’) there’s one in glee fandom, “running the banner down”, which i can confidently say will never be finished for several reasons; one in supernatural fandom, “red sun rising”, which... i still love the concept for, but it was based on demon!dean and that lasted about 3 episodes on supernatural, so no point finishing that unless i go full canon divergence; and a trc au called “sound the alarm”, which... i actually may finish someday. all of these can be found on my ao3, but obviously, they’re extremely incomplete.
in-progress: i suppose the only one that counts as “in progress” is “sound the alarm”, but it’s more in arrested development than actual progress (heh). i have 2 or 3 ideas for oneshots that i want to write, but i haven’t started writing them yet, so again, they’re not really in progress.
coming soon: as i mentioned before, there are a few things i want to write -- the missing scene from the first time ronan visited adam in college, a flashback fic of persephone teaching adam, and a fic exploring blue/adam going from dating to friendship. i also have some very nebulous cdth-related ideas (which i won’t mention because, well, spoilers). plus, i still owe @deerlovelylily dreamspace date fic! SOMEDAY molly, i swear D:
do you accept prompts: i do!! as long as there is the understanding that sending a prompt does not guarantee me writing the fic (because time, energy, mindspace, inspiration...)
upcoming story you’re most excited about: all of them are in way too early stages for me to significantly get excited, but... probably the missing scene fic and the cdth-related ideas? i’m just in a very dreamer trilogy adjacent mood lately, for obvious reasons, lol.
tag five fanfic authors to answer these questions: ahhh i suspect most of my writer friends have already done this but... just in case @harvardparrish @ravenqueen89 @silkspectred @mishcollin @bleachersmp3 ?? if you’ve already done it (or even if you haven’t) there is no obligation! conversely, @ anyone who would like to do this, pls feel free, and tag me so i can read!! 💖

i guess i should write down some final thoughts before i dive into the tag and mold my opinions to look like the rest of the fandom’s:
it took a LONG time for the book to pick up speed, imo. and i know a lot of it has to do with me comparing it to The Raven Cycle, which isn’t totally fair, but it’s gonna happen regardless. but it took a long time for the different POVs to finally converge and an even LONGER time for me to even understand the purpose of some of the POVs?? which could just be me being DUMB but still
i was just trying to mentally calculate how many POVs there were in TRC and while my tally is telling a lot it never felt like too many, and i think that’s the biggest thing that bothered me. cdth felt like too many POVs for me to keep track of/to care about and that’s what was frustrating me while reading it and making me take more time than i usually would to finish a book of that size.
maybe it also had to do with me not understanding the purpose of the Liliana chapters for so long. even after FINALLY getting that we were being shown the destructiveness of Visionaries turned outward + the age shifting conundrum they experienced + Liliana’s love for children i still feel like there had to have been a tighter way to prove that that didn’t involve giving me so much depth to tertiary characters who were going to die anyway
ESPECIALLY because maggie put so much care into making up backstories and quirks to Liliana victims but then just kind of casually mentioned people who were incredibly important to Ronan’s character development in the last series. like every time i got a TRC easter egg i was ridiculously pleased but also upset for people who hadn’t read that series and were starting with Hawk bc people like Gansey/Henry/Blue, Mr. Gray, Greenmantle, Cabeswater, Kavinsky, and Opal were condensed into one or two paragraphs of explanation while fucking Dabney Pitts gets three pages about his lack of courageousness. it was mindboggling
plus i just feel like climax of the book didn’t prove to be as exciting as i had hoped. it wasn’t a gun on gansey or adam parrish making a deal with cabeswater or a fire dragon-level threat in my mind. i didn’t think matthew was going to be killed bc that would dash ronan’s motivations for the next two books. i didn’t have much emotional investment in Hennessy’s other copies so their loss didn’t really sting. and battling the Lace just didn’t really take all that long, i guess. if it had been a harder fight maybe i would have been more invested? it just felt stunted for all that build-up (even though i know its not permanently defeated). just with the terrifying Adam scream and Hennessy’s absolute fear of it i wanted there to be more of a struggle to keep it at bay.
and this is yet another book in maggie stiefvater’s arsenal that doesn’t come with falling action/a resolution. this one’s a little different bc the climax led straight into a cliffhanger but i have to bring it up bc it’s something about her style that’s always peeved me
and now the good things, shall we?
everything about declan’s perspective is fantastic. i loved how maggie drove it home that his boringness/invisibilty was calculated, that he was as precisely plain as he needed to be to go unnoticed, and that his paranoia was an armor that kept his brothers safe. it’s going to make the next book SO interesting, to see declan unravel bc his camouflaged safety net has been incinerated
matthew finally learning he’s a dream is as heartbreaking as it is exciting bc i’ve been WAITING for this boy to get a personality other than “loveable” and i might actually SEE it now. also Matthew finally acknowledging that ronan is a dreamer is fun bc in literally ALL of TRC he was like...goofily listening to his headphones whenever that was being discussed. i want a matthew lynch who’s present in his own life and present in the plot. so that bit was cool and i hope it continues to be cool later on in the series
ronan lynch being a BADASS EXPERT DREAMER was so so fun?? especially when the first quarter of the book was ronan bleeding black from his orifices and bringing back murder crabs to his boyfriend’s dorm room and getting kicked out of Harvard for 2kforever. compare that to the end of the book where ronan is a king in his Lindenmere is a thing to behold. i loved ronan being able to show off his dreaming prowess to hennessy and prove just how hard he worked in the entire last series to become the dreamer he is today. he tends to flounder a lot in his own head but dreaming is a thing he’s GOOD at. he’s the fucking Greywaren after all
the complexity of Jordan’s identity crisis was really cool. i loved the concept of her choosing not to paint an original until she got to live an original life. i loved her choosing not to get Hennessy’s newest tattoo. i loved that she was seeing Declan as herself rather than as Hennessy. i HATED declan finding out he was learning to love another dream.
Hennessy’s POV was hard for me to get into bc the second i learned about her timers she just made me SAD and so, so tired. like i felt like i was dragging myself through her perspective the way she was dragging herself through her life and it was exhausting. i hope in the next book she learns more about safe dreaming so i can see what her personality is like without constant fatigue attached to it
and carmen farooq-lane’s perspective was....well. annoying. she seems like a fine person and by the end i was truly starting to enjoy her character but knowing that she was on the antag side of the book (me classifying that as anyone not on the brothers Lynch side of things) made me not thrilled to read about her and Parsifal. her POV always managed to show up right in the middle of something good and turn interesting, actual plot into inaction once again when she continues to bitch about Parsifal being annoying. any time her POV came up i felt like i was ready to stop reading now. so, here’s to her being more interesting in book 2 bc i feel like on my rereads of this book I’m likely to begin skipping her POV like i do Barrington Whelk’s
and who knows how i feel about Bryde?? i enjoyed all of his philosophical monologues, and i give him props for making ronan go find hennessy and finally make the book something i want to read, but like. he’s a bad guy?? flying off on his little ufo with his dreamers to do bad things?? so who knows. the worst kind of villains are ones who start off kind, so that’s as exciting as it is awful
and i’ve already mentioned Liliana so i think that about covers it, for now. book 1 was like a solid 5.5 for me, which was lower than i expected but i plan on rereading it a bunch and will probably like it more with time. i’m someone who legitimately hated The Dream Thieves for a very long time, so opinions are bound to change

The Raven Cycle Book Review
“Blue Lily, Lily Blue” and “The Raven King” Review by Maggie Steifvater
Tumblr media
Now that I have officially finished The Raven Cycle, I feel bereft of comfort and happiness. It’s been so long since I’ve jived with a young adult series and fallen in love with the characters and the plot so much. It was very good. I cannot emphasize this enough. Although, this review encapsulates both Blue Lily, Lily Blue and The Raven King, more than anything this will just be a rant of things I loved and things I didn’t like so much in Maggie Steifvater’s fantasy series.
The ending, as for all her endings, are not enough for me. I want epilogues of the future, of happy couples, of mentally healthy characters, and goals being achieved and strived for and a general sense of love and peace.
Steifvater doesn’t deliver on that and I’m not sure if I like the real aspect of it more or hate the fact that I’m left starving. The end of The Raven King was both everything I needed and not nearly enough. As always, I feel like her books contain too much to be restricted within the limited pages. I want to know about Noah and his mourning, I want to know about Gansey bargaining away Monmouth, I want to know about Adam and Ronan’s relationship, does Ronan wake the sleeping herd? Does Adam get a scholarship? Does Blue finally get to go to freaking Venezuela with Henry?
So many unknown questions and not enough answers. Maybe the characters don’t even know themselves. I often got the feeling while reading Maggie Steifvater’s work that her characters got the best of her, quite literally ran away with their own stories and dreams and desires. This theory I believe is innocuously proven by Blue falling for Gansey. I think originally Steifvater wanted Blue and Adam to be a thing, but Blue’s character said, nope, no way and took her own path. As did Adam. And Ronan. And Piper. And Henry.
Speaking of Henry, I may get lynched (lol) for this but I felt his addition to the group was a bit awkward. He joined the beating hearts club not because he was “found” by Gansey like the others, but because he was an outsider looking in and wanted to be in. I like his character don’t get me wrong, love his Korean background, his badass mother, and his love for Robobee, but I dislike the fact that he “completed” the so called group that had been present SINCE BOOK ONE.
Again, it’s as if Maggie was like, “oh, I guess this is happening.” Much of her book didn’t seem to be stringently planned out, which is fine! It’s lovely and takes a lot of talent to do that, but some things, like Henry, felt a bit too big for their shoes to me.
I also love the way Maggie writes. Its metaphorical and whimsical and somehow just enough information for you to get all the little insinuations between lines. Also, her metaphors are so random but make so much sense. Like I would never consider comparing tears to tracks on gravel, but she somehow makes it work and makes it work good.
Unlike most young adult series that bore you to death by spelling out every little emotion and breaking down every sentence, this doesn’t happen in The Raven Cycle. Instead of feeling like I’ve been left hanging, I feel like I was actually there because the breaking down of emotional situations like statistics is not how real life works and I think Steifvater gets that on an intrinsic level.
All in all, I highly enjoyed this series to the highest extent. The plot surrounding Glendower was interesting, as was Cabeswater, the psychics at 300 Fox Way and all that entailed, and especially the friendship between all the characters. Everyone had depth and personality and quirks and qualms and I feel like I was a part of a journey lucky enough to have been bestowed upon me. The best books don’t make you feel like you’re reading a story, they make you feel like you’re a part of it. Thank you, Maggie Steifvater. I’ll cherish the memories.
Recommendation: “The Raven Cycle” is truly a wonder of the young adult fiction community. If you haven’t read it what are you waiting for? Go now! Use your own Barnes and Noble Membership or someone else’s but either way, you’ve got weekend plans.
Score: 9.5/10

Tale As Old As Time
Whoo y'all this fic took a lot out of me, but it is definitely one of my favorites that I've ever written.
Disclaimer: I do not own Maggie Steifvaters characters nor do I own any of the beauty and the beast plot. I've used lyrics from the songs, lines from the script, and a description for the beast, but they are not mine, they are the beauty and the beast production teams.
Summary: beauty and the beast au where Adam is belle, Ronan is the beast, blue is Maurice, and tad is gaston. Pynch week day 2: musical au Adam/Belle POV
Word count: 5507
Adam Parrish and Blue Sargent lived together in a small village in the town of Henrietta, Virginia. The two are the closest thing to family that they have. Blue had family, but left to pursue her own life. They worked together perfectly because they had a mutual interest in making things. Blue made clothes while Adam made inventions. The provincial village disliked the two of them and called them funny. Adam guessed they were. The village people and Adam and Blue had different views on living in general. They didn't like how Blue spoke her mind and wasn't as clean cut as the rest of the women. Blue wasn't a slave to her husband and she loved being single. Adam on the other hand needed to be more demanding in the people's eye. He has to be with Blue in a romantic relationship because living together without any relationship was sinful. Adam and Blue liked their situation because it suited them. Adam would never complain about the hateful town. It was heaven compared to his old life. The village people couldn't see that. They were uptight and rigid and their opinions couldn't be swayed, but the rent was cheap.
Adam started another long day by going into the crowded marketplace for the morning chores, but Adam had an early morning and Blue was working on a design for a fashion fair. The marketplace wasn't as bad this morning as it usually was. He could deal with the whispers and gossip that floods the streets as long as he could get his hands on his favorite book, Alice in Wonderland. Something about the book gives him the sense of childhood he had ruined for him.
Adam returned back to the cottage in about two hours with clean clothes, food for two days, and his favorite book.
He called out, “Blue, I'm home!”
He heard a returning, “I'm in the workshop. I need your help.” and ran to the room.
The workshop was the biggest and most important room in the house besides the room that Blue and Adam share for a bedroom. It's as colorful on Blues side as it is gray and monochrome on Adams side. It's full of the most useful invention and stylish clothing; it's also filled with impractical shit and hideous choices of colors. Blue and Adam worked side by side in this space creating the most marvelous goods. They would trade comments, test products, and listen to music through one of Adam's inventions as they worked.
Adam moved over to Blue’s colorful work table to see what she was working on. Blue was using one of Adams most effective inventions. It was a machine that did the sewing for Blue, so all she had to do was put fabric in and she could manipulate it to her desire.
“This ducking machine stopped working.” She barked.
Adam sorted and put the white thread in the right place and turned the wheel slightly. The foot moved briskly up and down placing the stitches in the right place.
She mumbled, “thank you,” and got back to work.
The clothing piece was turning out stunning; the colors were meshing together perfectly and made the piece tell a story.
Adam was brought out of his reverie by a knock on the front door. He jumped back and went to see who would interacts with ‘the crazies.’ At the door was Tad Carruthers, the town's most handsome bachelor, who had his eyes on Adam since Adam came into this village. Adam rolled his eyes secretly, but he let Tad in. Adam stood in the doorway, so Tad couldn't walk into the cottage.
He mustered the biggest, most fake smile and said, “Tad, what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Isn't it though.” Tad boasted. “Such a pleasure.”
Adam held back the scowl making its way onto his face and instead insisted, “It's always nice to have some conversation, but if it's not important, I have to get back to my inventions-”
“What are your thoughts on marriage?” Tad blurted.
Adam knew where this was going, but his eyes still bulged, “Marriage?”
“Yes, a handsome guy like yourself must have had thoughts about it. You are always thinking.”
“I can't say I've thought too much. All I have to say about it is that it will be at the right time and with the right person.”
“You're young, I'm young. What's a more perfect time?”
“Is this your way of asking me to marry you?”
So you are as dense as the village people say you are. Yes, Adam, I'm asking you to marry me.”
“Tad, I..I just don't deserve you.”
“The only other person that deserves me is me. You're a close second.”
“I'm sorry, I just can't.” Adam said, pushing Tad out the door.
When Adam told Blue this, she cried laughing.
“Could you imagine? He asked me to marry him. Me! The husband of that boorish, brainless…”
“Mister Carruthers!” Adam picked up a piece of some fabric laying around and draped it over his head. “Can't you just see it?!”
“Mister Carruthers!” He picked up a piece of scrap metal and pretend-shot it like a bow, “His other half!”
“No, Blue! Not me ! I guarantee it! I want much more than this bigoted life!”
He sighed, “I just want a different life than the village people, including Tad have planned.”
Blue exhaled and nodded, “Once I go to this fair, I'll be picked up by a fashion company and we can finally move to a better place with no snobs or fucking Tads. We can just..be.”
@    @   @
Blue left the next morning with her designs and a cart made of entirely Adams creation. It had everything Blue needed.
“It's just a few days,” Blue said as they hugged. “I'll be back before you know it.”
That was five days ago. Needless to say, Adam was worried. Sometimes Blue would stay a couple extra days if she liked the town or city, but they had an agreement to not stay five or more days. Adam decided to get out of the house and distract his mind from his anxious thoughts.
In the distance, he heard a horse whinnying. His eyes caught Gwenllian, Blue and Adams horse. Blue took Gwen to her fair and had Gwen pull the cart. Gwen wasn't connected to the cart or the harness appeared to be broken. She was waking up the entire village with how loud she was.
“Woah, girl calm down.” Adam tried to comfort, “Is Blue alright?”
At the sound of Blues name, Gwen cried out. Fear crept upon Adam.
Quickly, he said, “Alright, take me to her.”
He mounted Gwen and she took off galloping. She brought him last the village walls and into the deep forests that surround the town. She ran Blue normal path out of the woods until she turned a smaller, unknown path which took them deeper into the woods. Adam swore he could hear wolves howling in the distance. Through the woods, was a clearing. A huge, gray building was peering through the leaves. As they approached the building, Adam saw the turrets and grand steps. Not a regular building. Around the clearing all the trees and shrubbery was brittle and dry. Any architect would gape at the angles and smooth edges; Adam could draw it everyday and still find some new part of the exterior. Adams has dropped as Gwen continued to the castle.
“Wait here.” Adam told Gwen as he walked up to the unnerving castle steps.
He walked through the large door and called out, “Blue!”
He heard whispering around the main floor. Then, he heard coughing coming from a wing of the castle.
“Blue!” He screamed as he grabbed a neat candelabra and raced to the noise.
When he finally saw Blue, he saw the jail cell and threw himself down to meet her face.
She looked at him with a confused look on her face, “Adam?”
“Blue, I'm here. I'll get you out.”
“No, Adam. You have to get out of here and go home; forget about me. Quick, before he sees you!”
“Who sees me?”
A gruff voice called out, “What are you doing here?!”
A growl came from Adam's front left where he suspected the thing was lurking.”
“Let my friend go!” Adam demanded.
“Then who would pay her crimes?” The creature growled, “unless you would want to take her place.”
Silence came as Adam thought. “Come into the light.” He instructed.
Thee thing scoffed, but did as it was told. When the creature was illuminated, Adam saw the most hideous mix of a lion, buffalo, gorilla, boar, wolf, and beat. Adam flinched back, closing his eyes and reopening.
Adam mustered up his courage and clearly said. “Yes.”
Beside him, Blue cried, “Adam, no!”
“It is done.” The beast told, as he threw Adam in the cell and grabbed Blue.
“Don't hurt her!” He exclaimed, but it was no use.
He looked around at the cell walls and bars. This is where he would live forever. In his mind, Adam knew he should be rethinking his decisions, but he couldn't find one regret. Adam just hoped that there was a least a tiny bit of humanity in the talking creature that he would give Adam food. Unfortunately, it was fruitless to hope. These four walls were Adams future.
@   @   @
Adam woke up to sounds of creaky doors. This wasn't a dream. Adam thought to himself. He followed the sounds he heard and saw an open door, but no human to open it.
“Down here!”
Adam looked down to see the candelabra he picked up last night and a clock. He jumped back and screamed. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
“What the fuck?” He muttered.
“Name’s Henry, this is Noah. We're here to show you to your room.”
“Ronan's not gonna like this.”
“How is this possible?”
“A heartbroken warlock.”
“We can't tell you more.”
“My room?”
“Did you really think we weren't going to give you a room?”
“No?”
“Ronan might not like it, but we’ll just sick Gansey on him.”
Henry and Noah showed him to the east wing of the castle. They told him it was Adam’s bedroom. His bedroom was a beautiful room that could fit five of Blue and Adams workshops. The decor was simple, a desk, wardrobe, and huge bed. It was a room fit for a duke.
“While you're here.” Noah spoke. “Know that some objects are cursed people, the wardrobe including.” And with that they left.
Curious to what Noah was saying, Adam sauntered over to the wardrobe. It was fancy and delicate plastered with the mint green theme of the room. Hesitantly, Adam knocked on its wooden doors. It sprung to life. One half seemed to shine like a sunshine. The other side stayed prim and proper.
A teenage boys voice filtered through one of the doors, “A human? Finally, it's been getting lonely.”
A silky smooth voice like the beasts carried through the other half, “Really? I'm having trouble believing that you're lonely when we share a wardrobe and have for gen years.”
“Shut up, Declan.”
“Matthew where are you're manners?”
“Up my wooden ass.”
“Matthew!”
“It's so nice to see something that has actual skin.”
Adam cleared his throat, “Well, that Beast is holding me prisoner forever, so you'll see me a lot.”
“I swear to g-d when I'm human again. I'll be the first to punch him.”
“Declan! Get in line.”
Adam cleared his throat again, “I have to ask, why are y'all cursed?”
“We can't tell you. Only Ronan can.”
“I'm Declan, the oldest brother and heir to the throne. My other half is Matthew, the youngest child and literal sun. Ronan, as you call the Beast, is the middle child.”
“Trust me, Ronan is just easily angered. He’all calm down.”
As in cue, loud banging shook Adams room. The beasts loud voice followed, “Get the fuck downstairs for dinner.”
Adam called out a response, “I'm not hungry.”
A moment of silence, then a sign, “will you come down for dinner?”
“No”
“I...would...love if you could...come down for dinner...please.”
“No, thank you.”
“Fine, then go hungry for all I care. If he doesn't eat with me, he doesn't eat at all.”
@   @  @
Moments later silent tears still ran down Adams face. Part of him wished to run after the beast and beg for forgiveness and maybe that way, the beast might take mercy and let her go. He knew he couldn't think about life back home with Blue, but his mind wandered. How was Blue? Was she thinking of him? Did she miss him as much as he miss her? He also thought to what Blue would do in his situation. The answer was quite clear. He had to find something good in this tragic place even if his home, his heart was too far away. He would also have to build walls around himself. He could do this for Blue as long as she was home and free.
A knock at his door startled him. In strolled a teapot and teacup on a cart.
The teapot spoke with a politicians voice, “Would you like a cup of tea?”
Adam smiled, “That would be lovely.”
The teapot poured itself into the teacup. Adam lifted the teacup to his face and took a sip. The tea warmed all the way to his heart and chest. On its way down, Adam heard an inhumane noise erupt out of the teacup. He looked closely and saw a face adorned on the teacup.
“That was such a brace thing you did for your friend.” The teapot admitted. “We all think so.”
“I like you! I'm Opal!” The teacup screeched.
The teapot and Adam laughed. “I'm Gansey.”
“And I'm Adam.”
“Say Adam how would you like some dinner?”
“But what about ‘if he doesn't eat with me, she doesn't eat at all.’”
Ganseys look said it all. The three headed downstairs awaiting the dinner.
@.  @.  @.
Adam walked down the grand stairs with Gansey and Opal by his side. They led him into a ginormous dining room where the chair pulled out and tucked Adam in by itself. On the table was Henry and Noah.
Henry spoke, “Ah Adam! What an honor it is for you to join us this evening. Now watch as the dining room proudly presents your dinner! Please dig in. Be our guest!”
Dinner was a long affair. Music filtered out of the piano in the corner and Henry and Noah did a dance routine that was wonderfully choreographed. Every so often, Noah would remind them to quiet down, so Rona didn't hear. The occupants made an amazing meal with a mysterious gray stuff that melted in Adams mouth. The food made Adam sleepy and full. Adam mentioned to Gansey that he wanted a tour of the castle before bed. Noah called off dinner immediately and went to join the group for the tour. Henry put on his best tour guide voice and showed Adam the library and lower parts of the castle.
When the reached a certain room, Gansey took over and asked, “Say Adam, what do you know about Welsh Kings?”
@.  @.  @.
At some point during the tour, the objects made intense eye contact, but did not mention the huge staircase leading up to the wing. Adam asked about the bathrooms and when he saw the objects turn, he ran.
The wing was dark gloomy. It was covered in cobwebs, ripped clothing, and claw marks. There were pictures along the walls, but only one Adam could make out what the picture depicted. It was a man and women with three children all in royal outfits and huge smiles. The man and two oldest children had black slicked back hair and features that could cut glass. The women and youngest child had unruly, but flowing blonde curls and soft faces. The whole family shared striking, clear blue eyes that matched the beasts eyes. Over the middle childs face were long, deep, slash marks.
Adam moved to the center of the room where the moonlight hit a pedestal that held a mirror and glass case. In the mirror, Adam saw his face clear as day. He saw something move, but nothing was there. In the glass case was a raven with the feathers falling off. At the bottom were several of the black feathers. He saw that the raven did not have many feathers left.
The Beast appeared suddenly and screamed at Adam, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU COULD OF DONE?! YOU COULD OF DAMNED US ALL!! LEAVE, GET OUT!!”
The beast lunged at Adam, then observed the glass case. Adam screamed and ran. He high failed out of the west wing and bolted down the stairs to the door ignoring the screams from Gansey, Henry, and Noah.
He ran out of the haunted castle and rode Gwen into the thick woods. He was surrounded by trees and the pitch blackness of night. He didn't get very far when he stopped and heard the howling of the wolves. Their growls came from every direction and he knew he was screwed. He grabbed a stick as a weapon just as the first wolf attacked. He fought them as best he could, but he was outnumbered. He heard a deeper, more threatening growl and his first thought was shit more of them, but Adam was wrong. It was not more wolves, for it was the Beast coming to Adams rescue. There was the Beast, there was Ronan coming to protect Adam. Adam tried to help, but Ronan's growl at him told him to stay away. He took on several at once, throwing them away as if they were nothing. He finished 15 with ease, but the next wolf got a cheap shot at Ronan. He yelled out before finishing the rest of the wolves. Adam and him stared at each other over the piles of unconscious wolves. Adam was about to say something before Ronan's eyes became half lidded and he collapsed. Adam glanced at Gwen, then back at Ronan. He looked so vulnerable laying there in the cold snow. His wound was bleeding and he would die if Adam left him without help.
He crouched by Ronan's side and whispered, “I need your help. I need you to stand.”
Ronan shakingly obeyed and together they got Ronan on Gwen's back.
Together they would make it back to the castle.
@. @. @.
“Ow!”
“Stop fucking moving!”
“You're hurting me!”
“Well, I'm sorry, tough guy, but suck it up. And stop moving!”
Ronan pouts but hands his arm back to Adam. Adam looks at him, but applies water to his cuts anyways.
Ronan hisses and snatches his arm away, “This never would've happened if you hadn't run away.”
“I never would have run away if you hadn't of frightened me.” Adam said back.
“Well, you shouldn't have been in the west wing.”
“Well, you should learn to control your temper.”
Ronan humpfed  and turned over, showing Adam has wounded back. Adam got more water to clean them, but decided against it. He rings out the water and stands.
“I think we should all get some rest. See you tomorrow.”
Adam is almost out the door before he hears Ronan calling him.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
Adam smiles, nods, and walks back to his room.
@. @. @.
Days turned to months and Adam was still a prisoner at the castle. The days at the castle weren't as bad as to be expected. Ever since the wolf attack, Ronan hadn't been as hostile towards Adam. He could keep a conversation with Adam and they spent most meals together. Ronan was acting slightly more human like everyday. He would sit on chairs like a person and he and Adam made a compromise to sip from the bowl instead of attacking it or eating with a spoon. Adam would sometimes bring books from the library and read them during dinner.
Adam was delighted when he found Alice in Wonderland in the shelves. He brought it to the table and when Gansey came over to talk to Ronan, he pulled it out. He started reading from the beginning.
Ronan saw what Adam was reading and dropped his cup on the ground. Gansey ran to get someone to clean up the spill.
Adam asked, “Have you read this book before?”
“Alice was beginning to get very tired from sitting by the bank with her sister, and having nothing to do: once or twice she peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations on it…” Ronan recited.
Adams mouth gaped open. “You know it by heart?”
Ronan nodded, “It was my father's favorite. I used to go into your room and read it to Matthew and Declan because they couldn't read it anymore.”
And that was it.
One night, Adam came downstairs in some garments Matthew and Declan forced him in to find Ronan waiting at the bottom of the steps talking to Henry, Noah, and Gansey, but stopped at Adams arrival.
Henry whispered something to Ronan which he replied, “it's red?”
Henry and Noah groaned and Henry whispered something else in his ear. Ronan's eyes widened before nodding.
Ronan stepped closer to Adam, “Parrish you look...um...good. Nice red suit.”
Adam laughed, “Thank you, Lynch.”
The two lad shared more personal details together such as last names, but why the castle was cursed, Adam did not know.
Ronan cleared his throat, “Come on, Parrish, there's something I wanted to show you.”
They walked for fifteen minutes down an area of the castle Adam hadn't seen before which was surprising because exploring the castle had been Adam's new found hobby. The hallways looked like the rest of the hallways did, gray and slightly creepy. They turned into a room and Adam let out a gasp. It was an engineering workshop that put Adam and Blue workshop to shame. In the far corner, were engineering books and on the other wall were so many tools that Adam hadn't even heard of some of them.
“My father used to hire inventors to make sure the castle had the latest technology. No one ever uses it anymore, so it's yours.” Ronan broke the silence.
“Mine?” Ronan nodded, “you rarely talk about your parents. Are they some object I've never met before?”
Ronan's face dropped. “No...they died before the curse happened.”
Adam pulled out some of the chairs from the workshops tables, “Im so sorry. I never asked you, how did the curse happen?”
Ronan sat down and his shoulders dropped, “it was my fault. After my parents died, I was depressed. I shaved my hair, obtained some new scars on my wrists, fought with Declan. I was a mess. The only people who could me from not ending my life were Gansey, Matthew, Noah, and Henry, but I started talking to a commoner from another kingdom. His name was Joseph Kavinsky. We would meet up street race, drink, and would sometimes fuck. I thought it was no strings attached, but he didn't. He-he fell in love with me and I told him I didn't love him and that he was just a coping mechanism. I never knew he was a warlock. He told me he would place a curse on my castle and all who lived inside it, so I would be as heartbroken as I made him. If I find who loves me and actually loves me, then the curse would be broken. If I don't find someone who by the time the last feather falls from the raven, then everyone I love turns to antiques and I remain a beast.”
Adam was left breathless, “So that's why you got so mad at me when I was in the west wing. Ronan...I'm so sorry.”
Ronan clicked his tongue. “Nothing for you to be sorry over. It's not your fault.”
“It's not your fault either.”
“Parrish.”
“I mean unrequited love sucks, but that's no reason to curse an entire castle.”
Ronan smiled a real and genuine smile unlike his usually smirks that Adam had gotten used to. A moment passed between them where they just stared at each other smiling.
“Wanna make use of the ballroom tonight?” Ronan asked.
“Like dancing?” Adam questioned.
“You can say no.”
Adam thought for a moment. “Id like that.”
@. @. @.
The castle was filled with a sweet presence that came with a ballroom dance. Everyone was excited for the twos dance.
Matthew and Declan dressed Adam in the most amazing silk suit. Blue would have appreciated the yellow color. He felt confident in the form-fitting garment.
He felt flutters when he walked down the steps leading to the first floor. His breath stopped as he saw Ronan on the opposite set of stairs. Ronan's outfit fit him snug and he looked lost until his eyes met Adams. They walked down the steps maintaining eye contact. Ronan outstretched his arm and met Adams.
Music led them to the royal bedroom where Gansey, Noah, and Henry were waiting for them.
Ronan drew Adam into his arms as Gansey started singing. His voice was a little shaky from misuse, but accompanied the dance perfectly.
Ronan certainly knew how to dance from his royal days, but was surprised to learn Adam knew how to dance as well. They moved together in perfect rhythm.
There were stepped on feet and apologetic glances, but overall the night went perfect. The two moved to the balcony to get some air as Henry and his lover Jiang took to the floor and danced the night away.
Ronan let out a breath, “I haven't danced like that in years.”
Adam laughed. “Me either. When Blue and I first moved in together, she thought it was outrageous that I never learned to dance, so she taught me.”
“Do you miss her, Blue?” Ronan asked.
“More than anything. She was my first friend before all this happened.”
Ronan was silent for a moment before continuing, “There is a way to see her.”
“There is?”
“Yeah.” Ronan pulled out the plain mirror and handed it to Adam.
“Show me Blue.”
The mirrors glass shimmered away to show Blue being shoved into a black carriage, the villagers surrounding her with fire, Tad at front.
“Oh my g-d!” Adam shrieked. “Blue in trouble.”
Ronan took a deep breath in, “then you should go to her.”
“I should?”
“She needs help.”
“But what about…”
“You're not a prisoner here, Adam. You haven't been in a long time.”
“But…”
“But nothing. Go.”
Adam reached to give the mirror back. “No. Take it with you so you'll always have a way to look back and remember me.”
Tears welled up in Adams eyes, “I could never forget you.” He leaned forward and kissed Ronan on the cheek, “I'm coming Blue, don't worry.”
@. @. @.
Adam heard Tads booming voice as soon as Adam entered the village. He seemed to be ruling the people up with his harsh words and thunderous voice. The people were following him blindly.
“Tad!” Adam screamed.
Tad let out a giddy smile at Adam arrival. It quickly turned mischievous in a split second, “Adam! It's so good to see you. I'm so sorry to hear about Blue.”
Adam furrowed his brows, “what about Blue?”
Tad put on a mask of remorse. “Blue went off the rails. You weren't here, so I took care of it. She'll be staying in a nice room at Monsieur Blacks asylum.”
“Blue isn't crazy; she's one of the most sane person I know.” Adam scoffed.
Tad whimpered in pity for Adam; the crowd followed. “But she is. She kept raving on and on about a beast.”
“But there is a beast.”
Tad sighed, “not you too.”
“And I can prove it.” Adam held up the mirror. “Show me the beast.”
Ronan's image flickered on the glass. When Adam showed Ronan, the village people gasped in fear.
“Is he dangerous?” One village person shrieked.
Adam replied almost immediately, “No he's very sensitive and gentle once you get to know him.”
Tad looked scandalized. “If I didn't know better, I'd say you have feelings for him.”
“You don't know me well enough to say that truthfully.” Adam retorted.
Tad sneered, “I may not, but I know monsters like that.” He turned to the crowd. “He’ll make off with your children, he’ll come after them in the night. I say we kill the beast.”
The crowd screamed approval while Adam screamed no.
Tad raised his hands up. “It's time to follow me.”
The village people grabbed torches and anything they could use as weapons. Some said prayers before they all took off towards the dark castle.
As soon as the last village was out of sight, Adam ran towards Blue who they forgotten about in the chaos. He threw his arms around her.
“Blue, I have to go warn Ronan.”
“Not without me you won't.”
@. @. @.
They arrived in the middle of the battle, objects vs people. Blue told him that she was going to help the castle and that he should go find the beast. He ran to the west wing as fast as he could in his yellow suit, dodging thrown plates, shovels, and miscellaneous objects. Adams heart was vibrating. What if he was too late?
He made it in time to see Tad leaning over Ronan, dagger in hand. Whatever he was saying to Ronan seemed to be the most painful thing Ronan ever heard. He looked like he was surrendering to Tads knife.
“Ronan!” Adam yelled.
Ronan opened his eyes. “Adam?”
Tad smiled murderously. “Adam! Just in time to see your lovely beast die.”
Ronan and Adam reached for each other as Tad plunged his knife into Ronan's chest.
“No!” Adam sobbed.
Tad took a step to the edge of the balcony to shadow over Ronan. Adam ran, knees buckling, and pulled Ronan's head into his lap.
Tad laughed, throwing his head back, “this is your fault Adam. If you had just married me, your precious Ronan would still be alive. Isn't it just a shame when things don't go exactly as planned?”
Tad laughed and laughed. He was laughing so much he didn't realize his feet went over the edge. Tad roared as he fell his death.
The two, finally left in privacy, stared at each other, tears running down Adams face. Ronan moved his paw to brush away the tears.
“You came back.” Ronan breathed.
“I wished I never left you.” Adam confessed.
“Maybe it's better this way.”
“Stop talking. Conserve your energy.”
“At least I got to see you one last time. Adam I…”
“Ronan? Ronan?”
Adam sobbed into Ronan matted fur.
“Ronan! Don't leave me! You're my home! I...I Love you!”
The castle grew eerily silent. Adam didn't see the last feather fall from the raven from his place in Ronan's chest.
He did see when a bright light washed over Ronan's body. It grew so bright that Adam had to look away. When he opened his eyes, he was met with a man dressed in a loose white dress shirt back tattoos and muscles visible. The man stared at his arms and sobbed with relief. He turned around and Adam could see his entire body. Adam lost his breath. He was by far the most gorgeous man Adam had ever seen, but where had he come from and where was Ronan?
He stepped closer to Adam and Adams stomach dropped. “Adam, look into my eyes.”
Adam did and was met with the most clear water blue. They were so bright, the punched a hole right through Adams guy just like…
“Ronan?” Adam gasped.
Ronan nodded and smiled so bright Adam had to smile back. Adam placed his hands on Ronan's snatched cheeks and looked into his eyes in awe. Tears sprang into his eyes for the third time that night, but this time Ronan cried with him.
Ronan moved closer to Adam, “May I?”
Adam laughed, but nodded.
They came at each other fast until their lips touched each other's. The kiss was chaste and gentle as if they were afraid to break one another. Adam could feel Ronan's tears mixing with his own. When they separated, their foreheads stayed glued shut and they nuzzled noses. They laughed again and hugged almost as a promise to never let go.
@. @. @.
They eventually made it downstairs to be greeted by Blue and villagers now remembering their beloved prince. Ronan and Adam were ambushed by human Gansey, Henry, Noah, and Jiang who pulled them into tight hugs. Opal announced her presence by letting out a inhumane noise and keeping into Ronan's arms. She was followed by Matthew who tackled Ronan's middle and Declan who ruffled Ronan's nonexistent hair. Adam pretended not to notice the looks Gansey and Blue were exchanging before going in to kiss his beautiful, human boyfriend.

“Have you ever wished to be able to spend if only a few more minutes with your favorite series?”
Tumblr media
Hey there! And welcome to Sweet and Unholy’s Wishful endings! Today Part 2 of me revisiting Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle! I’ll be posting a couple of theories regarding this series, including a new, updated and in depth analysis of why Gansey is in fact Glendower along with my personal wishes on how I wish the series would’ve actually ended.
Like always, click Read More for the theory and spoilers ahead, sweet kids !
How the Raven Cycle should’ve ended:
Tumblr media
2) Gansey is the Second Sleeper:
According to Blue Lily Lily Blue’s prophecy, there are three sleepers in the underground, waiting to be awoken. It is accepted convention that the First Sleeper is Glendower, the Third Sleeper then Unmaker, and a Second Sleeper in between.
I say Gansey is in fact the Second Sleeper, and awoke not thanks to the Gangsey but thanks to Henry Cheng. Said awakening that occurred when Henry and Gansey were underground, Cheng giving him his famous speech about fear and revealing the robo-bee to Gansey. An awakening that reached its climax when Gansey confronted his own deadly fear and allergy to wasps.
Thus, Gansey is Glendower:
The first sleeper could’ve never been Glendower, as it is revealed at the end of the Raven King that Glendower is in fact, dead. Then who is the first sleeper?
Well think of this bit from Blue Lily Lily Blue,
He slapped down three cards on the concrete floor. Death, the Empress, the Devil.
Think, Adam, think, get inside it —
The closest fluorescent buzzed harshly, suddenly over-bright, then just as suddenly out.
Adam’s subconscious fled through Cabeswater’s consciousness, both of them tangled up in this strange bargain he’d made.
Death, the Empress, the Devil. Three sleepers, yes, yes, he knew that, but they only needed one.
We know the Devil goes to show the Unmaker, the third sleeper, and most other theories identify Gwenllian as the Empress (even while she couldn’t have been the second sleeper as she was awake all along). Thus, following commonly accepted convention, Glendower would represent Death: The First Sleeper.
And what was the card Gansey pulled to represent him during the Raven Boys?
“Death.” Gansey read the bottom of the card. He didn’t sound surprised or alarmed. He just read the word like he would read eggs or Cincinnati.
The card itself a skull with a king’s crown, most likely Glendower himself. In fact, Death’s tarot card itself only represents change and transformation. It isn’t just Gansey’s long predicted fatal ending, but the transformation into Glendower he would be undergoing to come into full circle.
“I’ll tell you this: There are three sleepers.”
“You’ve told me that. Everyone’s told me that.”
“Well, I think your job is to wake up one of them, and I think it’s Maura’s job to not wake up another one.”
Calla specifically tells Blue that it was her mother’s job not to wake up one of the Sleepers, presumably the Unamker, but she also let’s her know it is her responsibility to wake up one of the sleeper’s, presumably Glendower. Blue’s responsibility to wake up Glendower, not Gansey’s as we’re lead to believe throughout the entire book.
And what does she do in the end of the Raven King?
The last tree fell, and the forest was gone, and everything was absolutely silent. Blue touched Gansey’s face.
She whispered, “Wake up.
Need more proof? Here is an entire list with more evidence:
— A continuous theme throughout the novel was time’s circle continuum instead of a straight line. “Not yet happened” a synonym of “Already has happened”: The present Noah sacrificing himself for 10 year old Gansey to live, the gang finding the aged up Camaro wheels along with Glendower’s shield, Blue’s face in the painting of the three women, etc.  These are all examples of how the possibility of Gansey being both Gansey and Glendower exist throughout the novel, or at least, an incarnation of him.
— Blue recognizing there was something more about him, Gansey’s agelessness as described by Adam:
“Adam knew that she had sensed the otherness to his friend: that sense that Gansey was both young and old, that he’d only just arrived, or he’d always been.”
— Gwenllian calls Gansey “My lord” “Father” in multiple occasions
— The constant raven motif repeating itself from Aglionby’s uniform to Ronan’s dream Chainsaw
— The three Blue’s and several others creatures chanting “The Raven King, make way for the Raven King” to Gansey.
— In the end scene, Gansey asking the wind to show him the Raven King and raven’s responding to his call. Glendower was often described as capable to speak to raven’s.
— What if the constant Glendower calls were not a path they pointed him to, but the voice calling his own name?
— We never got a clear reason as to why Noah would murmur he would live because of Glendower to Gansey when he was living because of Noah in fact. Noah trading his life for Gansey’s with the knowledge he was a King with a prophecy to fulfill would’ve been a more satisfying explanation.
— Maggie constantly compares Gansey to the Raven King, while comparing Ronan to his poet, Adam to his magician, and Blue Gwenllian, the witch, the mirror.
— The three Blue’s in the flag have red hands, and when inquired about it, Malory explains that the Bloody red hands are associated with the Mab Darogan, which is a mythic title for Welsh kings known as ‘Sons of Destiny’. These are the same three women that appear in Cabeswater chanting “Rex Corvus, parate regis corvi.” [The Raven King, make way for the Raven King] to Gansey & Co in Cabeswater. Gansey, just like Glendower, is being pointed out to us as the next Mab Darogan, after all, the book was swamped with references of Gansey being kingly. The King who died and Lived.
Adam dies:
Now we’re away from the realm of what could’ve happened because there’s evidence for it, let’s dwelve into Hime’s world of what she wishes had happened.
What if Adam died? Let’s analyze the symbolism for a moment.
We know that Maggie constantly chooses to draw Parallels between the Unmaker and Ronan, even to the point the Unmaker and Ronan happen to be intimately connected through Ronan’s nightmares. The dark, ugly amalgamations that turn his Cabeswater dreams to nightmares are the Devil, the Unmaker.
Adam is constantly being connected to Ronan in more ways than their romance make it apparent. Alas, Adam’s bargain with Cabeswater, and thus entwining their existence while Cabeswater’s entire essence is Ronan.  Then later in The Raven King, Adam becoming possesed by the Unmaker (Ronan’s mirror) through his connection to Cabeswater. What if those precise connections to Ronan in fact ended up killing Adam? Taking him to the brink of disappearing…
Glendower gives Adam his wish:
After Gansey does in fact wake up as Glendower in all of his Kingly glory, he turns to Adam’s fading existence and proceeds to finish granting all the wishes. Gansey lives, just like Blue requested, and Gansey fixes Adam- Just like he wished to. Not by charity, not by trying to tie his broken parts, but simply by gifting him with life again. By allowing him to wake up.
Literally any explanation about what goes on with Noah:
