The Princess and the Werewolf
Year : 2023 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 30
My rate: 6/10
Synopsis :
Princess Qi Pa wakes up to find herself abducted into the fantastical and surreal world of the Beast-Turning Tribe. She is forced into becoming the bride of the Beast-Turning King, Kui Mu Lang. Despite Qi Pa's repeated attempts to escape, her life is further disrupted by a man named Li Xiong. Li Xiong only appears during the day, and Kui Mu Lang only appears at night. Unbeknownst to Qi Pa, she has stumbled upon a shocking secret of the Beast-Turning Tribe. As mischievous and lively as she is, Qi Pa gradually finds her way into the heart of the domineering Wolf King. How will the beauty and the "beast" fall in love? A journey filled with laughter, sweetness, and heart-wrenching moments is about to unfold.
Main cast :
Wu Xuan Yi as Qi Pa
Chen Zhe Yuan as Kui Mulang / Li Xiong
Xu Wei Luo as Kui Mulang (young)
My thoughts on this drama :
Beauty and the Beast Chinese version with comedy in it? Yes, that sums it up pretty well. Don't look for a super high quality drama here. Some of the props were hideous (I look at you rubber pointy ears), the costumes were sometimes really weird…. But honestly, I had a pretty good time.... for the first 15 episodes. Then it started to drag... drag... drag.... and at some point I just hit the fast forward button because it was becoming painful to watch. And once again, it's a drama where the hero transforms at night (same actor so same face), getting a hair job, weird teeth and tattoo-like black veins on his neck and lower face (but still the same face) and yet!!! Our female lead could not recognize him? At all? Not even a sense of déjà-vu? Pleaaaaase! If you want to be convincing then change actors between night and day! This and the mask trope are just getting ridiculous.
Now the story is fun. The characters are fun. There is little to no real 'drama', you can smell the happy ending from episode one. The fact that it's a 'sequel' of another drama, where one the leads comes from the future, made for some comical scenes. Our female lead has been raised with modern concepts, and when transposed to ancient setting, you get exposed skin, pumps, group choregraphy, proposal on one knee, and more!
At some point I started feeling bad for our wolf pup, but also at the same time, I was glad our young princess did not get the Stockholm Syndrome and stayed hell bent on her objective to go back home. But as I said, you can smell the happy ending from the first episode, so any heartbreak was short lived and quickly overcome. The final scene was a bit WTF for me, but it fits... considering...

What are your favorite Chinese dramas?
roughly in order...
love and redemption (romance/fantasy/action). typical boy meets girl story. except the boy is in a martial arts sect forbidden to love and the girl is the reincarnation of the god of war. complete crack in the best way: we got magical girls, a male lead who's THE definition of a love martyr, rocking power-up songs, a spiritual snake beast that will fight everyone in a parking lot, a merman??? it's incredible and surprisingly feminist + queer positive. i made a powerpoint here.
monarch industry aka rebel princess (romance/political/historical). the niece of the emperor is put into an arranged marriage with a general from humble origins in her father's attempt to accumulate military power and later overthrow the throne. lots of politics and costume porn and competency all around. zitan is my favorite useless second male lead of all time because he's so. zitan. i made a powerpoint here
goodbye, my princess (political/romance/tragedy/light fantasy elements/PAIN). a princess is engaged to a prince from a faraway land and it does not go well for her, to say the least. this is my go-to when i just want the equivalent of getting punched in the throat. beautiful sets, costumes, and soundtrack and just a doomed paintrain you can't look away from. i wrote a review here.
le coup de foudre aka i don't like this world, i only like you (romance/slice of life/coming of age). two high school almost sweethearts promise to study abroad in england together. Circumstances happen, and one of them stays in china and they separate without contact for four years. the show follows the couple from their high school days, to their reunion as adults, and features snippets of their married life in the future. based on a true story. if you like cold man/warm girl, this one is my favorite-- i especially love the sibling dynamic between the female lead and second male lead. i wrote a review here.
go ahead (family/slice of life/romance/melodrama). two single fathers raise three children together, and the story follows them as they grow up and survive what i call "the toxic mom parade." probably my favorite family cdrama. i wrote a review here
and lastly,
the romance of tiger and rose (is meta a genre?/romance/parody/comedy/wuxia). the female lead is a writer in modern-day china, who gets transported into her wuxia script-- where she's playing a minor villain who is killed like 30 seconds into the plot by her husband! the show is an affectionate parody of wuxia romances, and i love it a lot. i wrote a review here

Getting to know me
So I was tagged at the same time by the lovelies @caligurl32 & @g0etia to answer 20 questions about myself!
1) Name; Traci Michelle. I go by Michelle, but you may see my first name on this blog from time to time. I PREFER my middle name.
2) Nickname; I’ll use Rosemary or Vulpes Fawkes as alternate online personas. I have also answered to Trace, and Jack, and a couple significantly more embarrassing childhood nicknames that I do not acknowledge.
3) Sign; Libra. I have strong Scorpio and Virgo traits though. In other fun zodiacs spanning varieties of dubious culture ties I’m also a crow, A+ blood type, vine plant, and a monkey. In order of appearance that’s Native American, Blood Type Theory, Celtic, and Chinese. I’m not sure which ones are actually legit (I know Chinese and Blood Type Theory are legit) and which were made up but eh. I usually just acknowledge the traditional Greek and Chinese zodiacs.
4) Height; 5'1". I am tiny and angry.
5)Orientation; Oh gosh. I generally describe myself as pansexual otherwise known as “WOW EVERYONE IS SEXY.” Gender and sexual orientation have little if any barring on if I find someone attractive. I find cis men sexy, trans men sexy, androgynous people sexy, gender queer people sexy, cis women sexy, trans women sexy, the list goes on - there is not a gender/sexual orientation combo that I find myself being repulsed by. Though I usually date men, this is largely because I’m very bad at finding and meeting fellow queer people.
6) Nationality; I’m an American. But I suppose ethnically I’m mostly German, Irish, Scottish, and English, with some French, Native American (Innu & Shawnee), and Jamaican thrown in. I have an ancestor of mixed heritage that came from Jamaica to America. I have slave owners in my heritage, merchants, preachers, as well as kings, emperors, British gentry, once famous poets, and one of the most unpopular presidents in the history of the United States.
7) Favorite Fruit; I’m fond of peaches especially but I also love mangoes, plums, and kiwis.
8) Favorite Season; Fall, hands down. Spring is a close second. Pity Florida only has a week of spring.
9) Favorite Book; Ahaha. This is very hard to answer. I would say my two favorite books of all of time are Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.
10) Favorite Flower; Tulips, hands down. Of all colors.
11) Favorite scent; lavender, peach, old books, Love Spell by Victoria’s Secret.
12) Favorite color; Deep purple or burgundy. I also am very partial to neon green.
13) Favorite animal; Foxes, Owls, Fawns, Cats, Amur Leopards, King Cheetahs, wolves, ravens and crows.
14) Coffee or Tea; TEA. I drink an obnoxious amount of tea.
15) Average hours of sleep; lol. I average anywhere from 4 to 8.
16)Cat or Dog person? While I like big puppers like Dobermans (especially) and German Shepards, I’m firmly a cat person.
17) Favorite Fictional Character? *sucks in breath* Why would you make me chose?! This is damn near an impossible choice for me. If I absolutely had to pick I would pick Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. He’s the kind of guy I hate interacting with in real life, and he’s essentially a parody or caricature of the worst traits men can posses. I find him hilarious but also a fascinating character to analyze as a commentary on toxic masculinity.
18) Number of Blankets you sleep with? 2 normally, but there is a third blanket on the bed I rarely use and only keep on the bed because my cat likes it.
19) Blog Created? November 2016 for this one!
20) Number of followers? 250 ish the last I checked. Might have climbed since then.
I tag: @diascordium @the-human-stain-k @haunterrr @thepastelghoul @ghuleh-101 @crashloves and anyone else who wants to do this! Just tag me, please. ❤
