Stories of Jedi and Sith
An anthology

I was pleasantly surprised by many of these stories in this new Star Wars anthology. To be honest, I didn’t have high expectations since the way the book was marketed made it seem like an easy cash grab since there are many Star Wars fans who are intrigued by the Jedi and Sith and this novel definitely focuses on the most famous ones out there. Overall though, I found the anthology to be fairly engaging and some of the stories definitely went a bit deeper than I had anticipated.
What I enjoyed:
-You can clearly see that each of the authors really put thought into their stories. I loved how some of the stories are deep dives into the thought processes of characters like Asajj Ventress, Maul, Palpatine, and Barriss Offee. While these more introspective stories can feel slow in comparison to the more plot-focused stories, they are still fun to dive into and explore the tragedy of some of these characters, particularly with Maul and Palpatine, how they aren’t able to overcome their feelings of anger and arrogance and, with Asajj Ventress and Barriss Offee, how influenced they are by the psychological effects of a galaxy at war.
-Some of the stories had some intriguing things to say about the war and the Jedi. I particularly liked Sarwat Chadda’s story which very much explored the cost of war on children. While the story’s happy ending felt a bit forced, overall, I really appreciated the story’s ability to go into how much the war costs civilians. Most of The Clone Wars TV show is focused on the war’s effects on the soldiers fighting it while the civilians are the side characters. It was nice seeing that switched around. Also, if you like Chadda’s story, I highly recommend you read his middle grade novel City of the Plague God which goes into the same themes in a much deeper way. Michael Kogge’s story taking place in the High Republic(!!) did a great job diving into what it means to be a Jedi and how force sensitivity plays a role in that.
-I loved how plain fun some of the stories are. Sam Maggs’ story, which introduces the male character Reyé who is indicated to be queer due to his hinted crush on Luke, was very entertaining to read. It was fun watching Reyé and Luke get stuck together on Hoth and have to work together despite their differences. Roseanne A. Brown’s story about Rey and Poe learning to collaborate while trying to rescue BB-8 was also lots of fun. I guess I like stories where characters get trapped and have to work together to save themselves?? Anyways, I loved how both of these stories played with interpersonal relationships in a sweet and wholesome way.
What I thought could be better:
-I wish more of the stories went deeper into their themes and characters. While I appreciated how most of the stories ended with the characters learning more about themselves and either choosing to change based on that knowledge or opting to stay angry and bitter, I still felt what we did learn about the characters wasn’t enough for me to say that this novel is worth buying other than the fact it’s Star Wars. I’m not even bothered about the lack of new lore in the anthology. While I do think elementary and middle school readers who are this collection’s target audience can certainly learn a lot from the themes in these stories, I also think there are other middle grade books like City of the Plague God, A Test of Courage, Inside Out & Back Again, Tristan Strong Punches A Hole in the Sky, and more that go deeper into themes of war, loss, anger, and trauma. While these are short stories and don’t have as much time as full-length novels, having written and read plenty of short stories in the past, I know that you can fit some pretty big themes into just a 1000 words.
Overall, I liked this anthology and enjoyed many of its stories. I appreciated how they brought more depth to some of the characters, how they tackled some big themes, and how simply fun some of them were. While I do think some of the stories could have gone deeper into their characters and themes, I wouldn’t say these are worthless tales. I wouldn’t recommend this anthology to anyone who wants more information about the world of Star Wars and its characters, but if you want a quick and, at times, introspective read that takes place in a galaxy far, far away that has some entertaining and thoughtful moments, then this one is for you!

Black Women In Star Wars: Episode V
Oscar-nominee Lupita Nyong'o is easily the biggest black female star to be in a Star Wars film, and she needs no introduction here...
...but I came close to not including her at all.
I wasn't sure if a voice-over role was sufficient.
It didn't take me long to realize that to leave her out would imply that I was only interested in celebrating black women's aesthetic contribution to the franchise. That's obviously unfair and very superficial...
I won't lie, though: I followed casting rumors for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens...I even wrote about them as far back as 2013 when I worked for the now defunct site nerdbastards.com
When I first heard whispers that Nyong'o was going to be joining the cast, I was excited--wondering what kind of character she would play. Some fans pondered if somehow TFA was bringing back Asajj Ventress from the Clone Wars animated series.
I didn't see that as likely, but it was closer in nature to what I was envisioning.
I mean, forgive me for being superficial, but let's take a moment to remember who we are talking about:
Miss Nyong'o is so beautiful it almost hurts to look at her. It is difficult to not immediately start wondering what she is going to look like when you hear she is going to be in a film.
And your initial supposition probably won't be what the internet describes as the love child of Master Yoda and Sybil Trelawney:
Personally, I never bought this theory...as Maz is clearly the offspring of E.T. and Edna Mode:

In all seriousness, Nyong'o's performance as Maz, which incorporated not just her voice--but her movements and mannerisms via a motion-capture suit--was phenomenal, and one of the highlights of the film.
Maz Kanata's species and homeworld are unknown (though many fans strongly believe she's an unhooded Jawa). She is over 1000 years old, and is known throughout the galactic underworld as the Pirate Queen.
Her castle on Takodana was a refuge for the dregs of the galaxy--all were welcome, as long as they left politics outside her doors.
Maz was attuned to the light side of the Force, though never received Jedi training. But she avoided entangling herself in political matters or taking sides--until the First Order destroyed her castle while searching for Rey and BB-8.
Near the end of the war with the First Order, she joined the Resistance as an advisor.
