The Earth Nation peoples are as diverse as they come. The wide and vast continent allowed for large provinces to be formed, which gave way to specific cultures being made. From left to right here are the major segments of the Earth Nation: Steppe/Midcontinent, East/Ba Sing Se, Si Wong Desert, North/Mountainous, Western Low Lands, and the South. The Midcontinental Steppe regions are where Zaya and Batu are from, and thus they are heavily (13th century) Mongolian based. They are the Earth Nomads forced to settle. The East takes a more Chinese inspiration, but Ba Sing Se is specifically taken after the Tang Dynasty of China. The dynasty itself has varying changes of fashion and culture, which can reflect the emerging megacity's identity as a world power. The Si Wong Desert inhabitants are modeled after the Bedouin peoples, and partly the Tuareg peoples (since the OG show has these tribes modelled after them too). They are sisters to the Earth Nomadic tribes. The Northern and general mountainous people are heavily Kazakh and Uzebek based. They are brothers to the Earth Nomadic groups. The Western Low Lands are primarily Korean and partially Japanese in design, given their proximity to the Fire Nation. They are also some of the tallest people of the entire continent. Lastly, the Southern most mainland region is based on the Hmong people of Vietnam and China. They themselves are diverse in our real life, which hopefully can translate to the Southern islands of the Earth Nation.

Xaela Elements in Real Life

Some bits on a couple of different Mongolian things since the Xaela were rather inspired by Nomadic Mongolian Culture. Had looked into a bit of the Mongolian Creation Myths out of curiosity to see if they inspired Azim and Nhaama at all, but they don’t seem to of at least at first glance, I did not look into it heavily at all. Though some of the Myths are based on Buddhism.

The Naadam

(Held during Midsummer, modernly has the ‘three games of men’ being Mongolian Wrestling, Horse Racing, and Archery)

The real Naadam doesn’t look like it was ever as violent as the Xaela version of a brawl. Though the Xaela version does include the three games in a way, you have the race to the center to seize the Ovoo(Horse Racing), While fighting other Xaela on the way(Mongolian Wrestling, Archery). And it does begin with a revered Ceremony as the Gharl Tribe spreads the dirt upon sunrise to mark the Ovoo.(Ovoo are Sacred Stone heaps used as Altars or shrines in Mongolian folk religious practice.)

Naadam is the most widely watched festival among Mongols and is believed to have existed for centuries in one fashion or another. It has its origin in the activities, such as military parades and sporting competitions such as archery, horse riding and wrestling, that followed the celebration of various occasions, including weddings or spiritual gatherings. It later served as a way to train soldiers for battle and was also connected to Mongols' nomadic lifestyle. Mongolians practice their unwritten holiday rules that include a long song to start the holiday, then a Biyelgee dance. Traditional cuisine, or Khuushuur, is served around the Sports Stadium along with a special drink made of horse milk (airag). The three games of wrestling, horse racing, and archery are recorded in the 13th-century book The Secret History of the Mongols. During the Qing dynasty's rule, Naadam became a festival officially held by sums.

This instrument is seen in various settlements in the Steppe(Ingame), and is also known as a Horse Fiddle.

The filling is similar to another Mongolian Dumpling, Khuushuur, however Khuushuur is fried. Main ingredients are Dough, Mutton, or beef

Yurt(Ger in Mongolian)

Tents that are favored by those living on the steppe in Mongolia. They are fairly light and fast to assemble and apparently rather wind resistant. The background of this image also reminds me of the Azim Steppe in the game.

I’ve been seeing this question floating around and I personally felt it would be important to address...

Should Padmé Amidala have been cast as an Asian woman for the Prequels Trilogy?

The important thing to think of when determining the answer to this question is that it is a matter that is more than just a preferential choice. Of course, the answer and the question are now hypothetical since the movie is already a thing, but it’s still worthy of discussion.

Also, this isn’t necessarily a critique on Natalie Portman herself as much as it is about questioning the creative decisions behind her character by the Casting Director -- Robin Gurland, the Concept Artist -- Iain McCaig, and the Costume Designer -- Trisha Briggar, specifically for The Phantom Menace. And let’s not forget the man at the helm -- George Lucas.

Now, the main reason why I feel it is relevant to bring these people to light is because it is very clear that they all share one common trait -- they are all white. A relevant fact because, however unintentional in the hiring process, having a room full of white people creates a lack of perspective which can forward careless work practices involving things they are not familiar with. By things, I mean specifically cultures they are not intimately familiar with.

You have people who find themselves trying to create the scifi feel of the foreign and the unfamiliar -- they see cultures that are fascinating and beautiful and feel inspired. But that’s when things get dicey. After all, if a white person is not actively looking for it (as it is not an active part of their life to worry about), how will they understand what can be potentially disrespectful or not for the poc cultures they borrow elements from?

Which brings us to remember that...

Cultural Appropriation: Historical Context is Important

One thing that can determine whether or not cultural appropriation harmful is when the people borrowing from the other culture possesses historical baggage in which they have a history of taking from those people to begin with.

This is why white people wearing Native American headdresses is considered immediately harmful. Even without the added context of the fact that the headdresses are being misused and disrespected, the fact is that white people have had past transgressions stealing from Native Americans with consequences that still exist today.

So, what is the historical context involving Padmé Amidala and her wardrobe?

I’ll get there, but let me explain a few things first involving the development of her noteworthy red dress ensembles when we first see her (ok, Sabé lol) on the throne and later in the movie.

When looking at FORCE OF FASHION: QUEEN AMIDALA’S THRONE ROOM ENSEMBLE, an article that is posted on the Star Wars official site, you see that they talk about the Behind the Scenes work on Amidala’s main wardrobe in TPM and the inspirations revolving around that.

[The] design borrows the striking reds of traditional Chinese regality and mixes it with the complex, beautiful golden designs of Korean and Mongolian wedding dresses...”

“[the] massive headdress strongly recalls that of a traditional Mongolian wedding...“

“Here in this galaxy, the white make-up and red dotted accents on Amidala’s cheeks resemble the Yeonjigonji, a style of make-up used by brides in traditional Korean weddings...”

The issue here isn’t that they take inspiration from multiple cultures as much as they pick and choose, mix and match certain aspects of wedding wear that is worn from those cultures and put them all into one style of dress to emulate a certain aesthetic.

Intent and the tradition become changed and disregarded for the fiction that is played in the story. The context is lost and it is then displayed towards an audience where many do not know the original origins. It all sums up to what they intend: to portray an alien culture.

To move forward creatively in this way -- taking bits and pieces of a culture mainly for the aesthetic while disregarding the meaning and symbolism -- is to assume that these cultures have interchangeable traits that can be taken and altered at whim. And that’s simply not the case. Cultures are not to be treated the same as arranging a flower bouquet. Especially if it comes from cultures that belongs to people who are still alive and thriving, to which their culture is an active part of their livelihood and identities.

Which brings me to talk about....

Orientalism, Why it Sucks, and How it Affects Us Now

It is during the 19th century that there was a spark of interest and fascination with the the far East for the British Empire. With the modern technologies that allowed for travel across oceans, it made things steadily easier for foreigners to meet and explore new cultures and people. It was a time of learning built on curiosity and would escalate and devolve when findings were taken back to British civilization. Stereotypes and a disdain for foreigners would fester among the white populace despite them hypocritically finding fascination in their art.

It should also be remembered that during this time, the West had already been introducing “western practices” to other cultures, which included drugs and weapons. The one specific thing I’ll reference is the “Opium Trade” being started in China and how that thoroughly crippled the nation -- causing millions of addicts but also a wealth of trade/commerce in which Britain thoroughly benefited from.

So, on one hand, you have the white people taking artifacts and treasures back to their land for the aesthetic. On the other hand, we have those same white people ruining the people they are stealing from and taking advantage of their misery (often caused by said Imperialistic white people) for money.

And all of the art of these people from multiple cultures: Middle Eastern, Asian and North African would be put under the giant umbrella to be referred to as “Orientalism” that would inspire a time of thievery, gaudy misunderstood imitations, and an even worse mistreatment of the people of those cultures.

To them, these “people of the Orient” did not have any valuable distinction other than the fact that their works were foreign, fascinating and beautiful.

It didn’t matter to them that these cultures existed on their own and possessed a long developed history that determined who they were as people. To the colonizers and thieves, they were all the same -- to be stolen and furnished in homes as trophies.

They picked which assets would be considered valuable about these cultures by taking these beautiful culturally important things out of context.

And this, is the historical baggage that I consider when I look at the cultural appropriation that is Padmé Amidala’s regalia and the fact that white people were behind the conception and designs. It’s not a matter of the negative cultural appropriation being intentional or not, but rather, from their situational ignorance, they acted unknowingly and created something potentially offensive to those of Asian descent.

They took beautiful features, but left behind the significance and cultural symbolism. They have unintentionally removed the Asian people from the designs despite it originating from them.

It’s one thing to be inspired, but a creator needs to understand that when you are inspired by any culture, you have to bring forward the people as well.

A good example of this would be the Avatar: The Last Airbender series and how they were inspired by multiple South and East Asian cultures but did not remove the Asian people from the story at all. They also kept all the clothing designs faithful to what they based off of (no mixing and matching certain aspects into one clothing) and kept the context for wearing them proper (ie. they did not design regal wear based on wedding attire as though it were interchangeable).

But does this mean that we hate Padmé and everything and everyone involved with her design?

Not necessarily, but at the same time we shouldn’t excuse it.

When it comes down to it, it is always important to acknowledge what can be done better to improve in future works. Action needs to be taken but...

Remember that when problems are being pointed out about something you like, no one is telling you not to like it anymore.

Rather, it is important to discuss all creative media, old and new, and work towards actively thinking on how they can be improved. For example, it is these kinds of discussions and acknowledgements that have brought the majority to accept that racist caricatures like Mr. Yunioshi from Breakfast at Tiffany’s are unacceptable in current modern media.

So, the question isn’t just “Should Padmé Amidala have been cast as an Asian woman?” Unfortunately, though we know that it would have been definitely more respectful considering the thoughts behind her costume, there still lies the issue of white creators being in charge of the costuming and design of Naboo and approaching it in a way in which did not actively involve actual Asian creators in their development process.

So, consider asking: “What should we do for similar characters like Padmé in the future?” What should we do when a character’s identity is based on an Asian culture for aesthetic?

What should we do to make sure future creators and developers will take more careful measures to be respectful in their portrayals of new fictional creations?

How does a creator make something original and exciting without ostracizing what it is inspired by in real life?

After a banner 2018 that helped Gunna establish himself among Atlanta’s finest, the ever-prolific artist dropped off Drip Of Drown 2. He originally promised the album last December but decided to delay it to February. Though Drip Or Drown 2 doesn’t have the highs of its predecessor or Drip Harder with Lil Baby, it’s still a solid showcase of Gunna’s gifts that should appease his growing fanbase. Songs like “One Call,” “Speed It Up,” and “Yao Ming” show his formula of autotune-soaked braggadocio over moody trap beats fully intact.

Mass Appeal, Starting 5, Vol. 1

The team at Mass Appeal has been working to sign some of the underground rap scene’s top talents, and it looks like they’ve assembled a team they’re proud of. Enter Starting 5 Vol. 1, the label’s de facto crew of lyricists like Stro, Ezri, Cantrell, 070 Phi and Fashawn. They dropped Starting 5, Vol. 1, a collection of some of the music they’ve been working on before heading out on the tour they’re currently on. The “Vol. 1” indicates that there’s more to come, which is a great thing to hear, which is only a good thing after the quality on the inaugural entry in the series.

All five MCs get off throughout the 8-track EP on tracks like the mysterious “6 Rings” and the luxurious “SonShine,” featuring Stro and Cantrell as well as Keyon Harrold and esteemed producer Black Milk. The reflective track is one of the highlights of the EP along with “Apostles,” which features a Nas verse that shows the rap legend in sharp form, barreling through choir-like vocals and an evocative piano melody along with Fashawn and Ezri. Both Ezri and Fashawn got space to sprawl out on their own solo records with “Black & Blue” and “Utter Disrespect,” respectively. ”Though there’s no track with all five featured MCs present, the Starting 5’s first effort is definitely a win.

Czarface & Ghostface Killah, Czarface Meets Ghostface

After a long wait, Czarface Meets Ghostface finally dropped. The 12-track project theorizes Ghostface Killah dueling with the Czarface collective of his Wu-brother Inspectah Deck and rap duo 7L & Esoteric. It’s a wrestling-themed project featuring some of rap’s most worthy warriors and delivering just as many punches and moments of bombast as an episode of WWF Raw in its heyday. 7L provides the searing, dusty-drum soundscape for Ghostdeini, Deck, and Esoteric to get off dense raps chockful of boasts of lyrical supremacy, vivid narratives, and nostalgic wrestling references. Songs like “Mongolian Beef,” “Iron Claw” and “Morning Ritual” are standouts.

Q Da Fool & Kenny Beats, Bad Influence

Kenny Beats was batting .1000 last year with his collaborations, and his latest project with DMV rapper Q Da Fool is another banger. Kenny provided Q with a mesmerizing suite of beats, and Q commandeered them with his own brand of gritty narratives and streetwise wisdom like, “they say the hood just like the wave, don’t get caught up in it/and please don’t jump inside this game if you ain’t brought up in it” on the churning “100.”

His native PG County streets are undoubtedly the chief setting for Bad Influence, whether he’s pitching product on the egregiously thumping “Work” featuring Splurge, or painting grim portraits of the psychology of the streets on the resilient “Crazy” and gloomy “Had Sh*t.” We already knew Kenny Beats’ production acumen is incredible, and now even more people will be in tune to Roc Nation signee Q Da Fool, who’s a name to watch for 2019 and beyond.

Higher Brothers, Five Stars

88Rising is a collective and movement that shows hip-hop’s international reach, and the Higher Brothers are among the crew’s most intriguing acts. They decided to reach back out to the rest of the game on Five Stars, a fun, loftily-titled collection of previously released tracks and new heat. The quartet, comprised of MCs MaSiWei, DZknow, Psy.P, and Melo is one of the acts of the moment in China. It was a smart choice for them to entrench their presence in America with collaborations with the likes of Schoolboy Q (“Won’t Believe”), Soulja Boy (“Top”), J.I.D (“Do It Like Me”), and more. They’re equally adept at turning up with tracks like “One Punch Man” and “Gong Xi Fa Cai” as they are at straight spitting on traditionalist appeasing tracks like “Open It Up” and the funky “Sunshine.”

A$AP Ant, Addie Pitino

While ASAP Rocky and Ferg enjoy the lion’s share of mainstream attention in the Harlem-based Mob, ASAP Ant has quietly been doing his own thing for years now. Addie Pitino is the latest work from the Baltimore Native, and its a collection of fun, debaucherous thumpers with ASAP Mob’s characteristically left of center eat for beats. Though none of the other ASAP Mob members pop up on the 11-track project, their vibe is apparent though experimental synth-driven bangers like “Vanilla Cream Soda” and “Purge Button.” ASAP Ant’s lyrical content isn’t the most diverse or technically impressive, but he’s a willing and able master of ceremonies throughout the sonically impressive project.

Adé, Always Something EP

DMV rapper Adé, formerly known as Phil Adé dropped a 6-song EP that cleverly infuses “Something” into every title. The clever diction is an ingenious hook to draw listeners into his versatile craft. Long known in the DMV underground, Always Something sounds like a bold push for even more visibility. The EP boasts a number of high-profile features, and he does a good job of matching their energy in order to draw prospective fans into what he has going on.

On “Something New,” he’s showing off his knack for melody with Lil Baby, but still harkens to his MC roots with technical precision clever worthy lines like, “I cut n—-s off, I’m like breaking news.” He turns up with Rich The Kid on the “Something from Nothin’,” then gets romantic on the mesmerizing, horn-driven “Something Real” with DMV peers Goldlink and Wale. With his latest collection of witty, introspective lyricism over a modern soundscape, Ade gave us something dope this February.

Lansky Jones, Dangerfield

One of the benefits of being in a collective as gifted as New York’s World’s Fair is the inherent competition to match your peers’ solo work with heat of your own. Lansky Jones added another gem to the collective’s catalog with Dangerfield, his debut solo project. He sets the tone from the gate on the autobiographical project opener “Ode To Big Allis,” where he reflects on his experience on New York’s 7 train line and drops a lofty affirmation: “my vernacular Nas but emotional as Pac could be.”

The rest of the project shows Lansky unfurling his assonant, unmistakably New York linguistics over production that showcases his eclectic tastes. Whether he’s flexing a laidback lyrical exercise over vintage New York horns on “New York Marathon” or telling a story over “Arizona Lemon Ice Tea’s,” opulence, the tracks captivate from a range of emotional perspectives. Album standout “The Return Of Landry Jones’ is the project’s most ambitious moment, as he weaves a tale of romance from the high of new attraction to the low of heartbreak over funky, constantly evolving production. Dangerfield is a strong, personal effort that highlights Jones’ ear for beats and dedication to the classic New York sound.

ACTIVE ESCAPE TO ICELAND!

A fortnight ago I escaped to a remote Eco Retreat called Deplar Farm, in an ancient, primordial landscape where people live a very different, and highly compelling life. Chief amongst any list of ‘the most beautiful places to visit on Earth’ will be found Iceland – I now understand why, and I hope this post shares some of that magic. It’s long been a romantic dream of mine to visit this isolated, mystical land with its rumbling geothermal engine, and tundra-punctuated basalt landscape; perhaps more interesting to you, my dear reader, is the recent proclamation in The Lancet that Iceland is ‘the healthiest country in the world’ alongside my homeland Sweden! But don’t be fooled, as it’s also one of the most inhospitable places to live on the planet – temperatures where I visited can plummet to an average of −30°C in January, and howling winds can lash at a brutal 160mph, with several meters of snow dumping daily. This means schools close, infrastructure suffers and cars avoid some roads for risk of flipping and/or just being buried! The land is barren and rugged but that’s bred a nation of robust and resourceful people. I was astonished by the natural beauty and the local food, but more than anything by just how much there is to do here! THE COUNTRY

It says something when countless films and advertisements have been captured in so small a country (including ‘Star Wars’, ‘the Fast and the Furious’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ – a total of 250 movies in under 10 years). That speaks to the rugged authenticity and spellbinding wow-factor of the landscape. From a more practical perspective, Iceland also hosted the trial sessions for Neil Armstrong & Co to practice their moon landings; some people, to this day, maintain that they simply landed here instead, but let’s leave it at that!

Geologically speaking, the country sits literally atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and is effectively just two continental platforms which are separated (and separatING) by an active volcano, which means the island is growing by about 2cm per year – the size of a fingernail. The country lies just outside the Arctic Circle but is situated on a quite unique geological ‘hot spot’ and is warmed by the North-Atlantic Current, meaning you get pretty reasonable summer temperatures and vast amounts of geothermal activity; but it’s called Ice-land for a reason. That poetic coexistence of ice and fire means there’s exciting activity all around the island. Some of the ancient hot springs are explosive geysers which regularly shoot towering pillars of boiling water that can liquefy wildlife on contact, but others are totally benign and in fact propose the perfect temperature for a spot of restorative bathing; these hot springs are equally popular with travelers and locals alike.

Of particularly interesting remark for me is the enormously skewed ratio of citizens-to-tourists; a mere 336,000 Icelandic souls permanently inhabit this island, yet over 11x that number visit annually for holiday purposes. 36% of the country’s GNP comes from tourism; I can’t imagine many (if any) other single-island countries that have such a dedication to travelers, and that all tells you that the hospitality simply *must* be good.

THE DESTINATION – DEPLAR FARM:

Just 40 kilometers from the North Pole, in one of the most remote enclaves of Iceland, Fljot Valley, you’ll find Deplar Farm Hotel, a former sheep farm and part of the Eleven Experience group – purveyors of fine ‘Experiential Travel’ to the international Adventure-set. Shrouded by a crown of towering snow-capped mountains, this place is wild, remote and isolated – it’s completely private and experiences some of the highest average snowfall on the planet in some brutal winters. This is the ultimate secluded adventure pad, pictured below in its snowier winter robes!

The hotel’s architecture celebrates the traditional Icelandic build – abandoned ships were historically turned upside down and clad with a moss roof, and the aesthetic here very much recalls that charming vignette. When approaching this hotel for the first time in one of their specially-adapted Mercedes’ (a sign of the comforts to come), you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s a minuscule structure, shrinking into obscurity at the base of these monstrous mountains which would miniaturize anything. Yet when you enter the 23,000 square foot 13-suite uber-hotel it feels reassuringly airy, spacious, modern and light with floor to ceiling glass windows inviting the outside in.

A PLACE TO COME HOME TO…

Before arriving at Deplar Farm I was asked to fill out an extensive questionnaire to inform the hotel of any particulars. You can be as descriptive and detailed as possible, including foods which you like/dislike, music, activities etc. Based on this Deplar fashions a customized plan ahead of your arrival, and they pride themselves on delivering bespoke tailor-made experiences entirely in tune with your desires. If you return to this place (I can vouch that you’ll want to) you can expect that your favorite drink will be waiting for you with your favorite tune playing in the background. FRIENDLY TOUCHES

When sitting down for your first breakfast you’re introduced to the chef, you’re also introduced to the waiter, the bartender and everyone else who works on the property. You quickly recognize who works there, yet it only occurred to me on my final day that they were all wearing a uniform. Subconsciously it had registered but the details here are so subtle and well-thought-out that it’s not obvious.

GO KEY FREE…

Unlike anywhere I’ve visited before (other than somebody’s house), you can roam the hotel freely; room keys are optional and most guests choose not to have them. There are snacks, tea and coffee in every room. Books adorn the shelves and you can ensconce yourself anywhere to lose yourself in a foreign world, if you fancy. In many ways, the homely and relaxed familiarity succeeds in that holy grail of the hospitality world – it feels less like a hotel and more akin to a villa with subtly supreme service. The flow of the rooms is beautifully thought through, and I found myself effortlessly gliding from one room to the next, enjoying the succession of communal spaces – as if it were my actual home.

SAFARI ISLAND…

Much as you might experience when arriving at an African safari, the journey is intrepidly off the beaten track, in a remote, isolated and completely foreign environment. You absolutey need a guide to unveil the unknown to you here, and having access to one who knows the area’s hidden gems is transformative and really allows you to immerse yourself in the ancient natural landscape, sped along by Deplar’s modern-day luxuries. Our guide was the incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and calming Michael Barnet from Colorado, Silverton, who is also a heli-ski guru. He helps create this place into an adventurous man’s playground.

There are endless outdoor activities on the island including heli-skiing, Icelandic horse riding, hiking, fishing, kayaking, clay shooting, and many more. I’ve included a small selection of my images captured during thimesmerizingng trip!

HELI SKI PARADISE

During ski season, there are two helicopters on site; by scrambling the choppers, you could be fishing within 30 min (rather than enduring a 4-hour car journey) and can combine it with a spot of skiing thereafter.

Every heli program is completely custom made – should you wish you could cover just 5 runs or ski for 12 hours a day, come back for lunch or stay out. Skiing in Iceland sounds truly unique in that you can be 1850 meters up in the mountains with a view over the crisp North Atlantic Ocean and finish your long run at just 5 meters of elevation, right down by the ocean. You always have such a clear view of the sea and proximity. Obviously, given my visit was in summer, that wasn’t on the cards for me (I’ll shelve that for a future dream), and instead…

GETTING TO KNOW THE ICELANDIC HORSE

The Icelandic Horse goes back a thousand years. Settlers brought their horses from Scandinavia, but the horses couldn’t cope with the harsh climate, which killed the poor little things. So instead the Scandinavian horse was cross-bred with the independent Mongolian horse who’s more used to temperatures of -40 degrees! To this day, the law decrees that no other horses are allowed on the island. The riding is quite different – it’s a sensation of constant bouncing as opposed to the rhythmic up-and-down motion I’ve come to expect. For me, who as a young girl literally lived in a stable and had horse photos plastered on her wall, this was the dream! Riding an Icelandic horse through the Icelandic mountains is definitely one extra check off the bucket list! Seeing the delicate flowers up close, birds nesting, baby lambs and horse fowls, this was an experience not just for the body but for the soul.

HIKING THE TERRAIN!

Yet I found that the best way to see Iceland’s nature was by foot. In Iceland, there are some spellbinding hiking trails to discover. The air is impossibly fresh, imparting generous restoration upon the lungs and constitution, and the scenery is simply stunning – vertiginous heights, dramatic mountains, hyper-real waterfalls, adorable newborn lambs, and a simply awesome ocean. On one of our trails, we were treated to some secret hot springs; one hidden in a cliff face, in the ground we climbed down to discover a totally private hot spring, carved by glacial processes thousands of years ago, and yet filled with crystal waters.

HOT SPRINGS

Iceland, resting on a terrestrial ‘hot spot’ means there’s a disproportionate amount of geothermal activity just aching to escape to the surface. Deplar Farm is completely fuelled by a nearby hot spring which has been piped in to the hotel. These springs and geysers are so numerous that you’ll simply find them all over the country; for some, the clue’s in the title and they are indeed boiling hot, but others might legitimately be re-named ‘tepid springs’, or perhaps ‘pleastantly warm springs’ – simply the perfect temperature to bathe in. Hot springs are said to have a number of health benefits including promoting the elevation of blood circulation, assisting with stress relief, and improved sleep quality, pain relief. Further, the water found in natural hot springs contains a variety of different minerals, including calcium and sodium bicarbonate, which are said to have a therapeutic effect upon the skin and broader constitution.

FISHING FOR SOMETHING…

Iceland is said to offer some of the best fishing in the world with a variety of rivers and lakes. Serious anglers will journey here just to experience it, and I know a few who’ve done as much! The hotel has direct access to the Floser River which is teeming with wild salmon, brown trout and arctic charr, amongst many more.

KAYAKING!

I thought I’d hate this experience but I absolutely loved it! Donning fantastic wetsuits which are surprisingly comfortable and breathable, it’s a bit of a different activity but remarkably demanding. Another superb way to observe the crisp Icelandic scenery from an alternative angle, there are hundreds of powerful rivers down which to kayak – some materially harder than others (I didn’t fancy the one pictured below!). My experience was such that controlling your vessel amidst the rapids takes great coordination, balance, foresight and strength, but it’s utterly exhilarating and superb fun! If you’re looking for something a little less strenuous, kayaking on a still river is pretty special too; for me the deafening silence of this land is astounding, both wholly inspiring and compellingly terrifying in equal measure.

THE SERVICE

It’s a contemporary and ‘relevant’ take on service – not overbearing, but rather understated, modern and of the highest quality, with all the ultra-luxurious details manicured into the provision. There are of course drivers on standby, a Michelin decorated chef, and spa treatments under the northern lights. For the time you’re here, there’s the inescapable sensation that the place is yours, and no request would be too niche; ‘cinema in the middle of the night with pizza’ is but a helicopter’s call away!

THE FOOD

Iceland is said to be the healthiest country in the world, and the cuisine is unquestionably a key part of that. Fishing used to be Iceland’s largest industry, it’s now second to tourism, and I’d say I can’t think of many places able to compete from a ‘freshness’ perspective. Deplar Farm is superbly advanced from this perspective!

Deplar Farm makes the most of the Iceland’s local surroundings; their Swedish Executive Chef Andrea Hurra and her partner Alex Thorsteinsson have put together a refined menu (always accompanied by a short but precise presentation) which is local, fresh and sustainable. The fish which arrives on your plate is caught locally only hours earlier; all products are bought from local farmers; indeed Deplar Farm’s mission is eventually to be able to harvest all their own vegetables on site. This is a compelling proposition, and the quality of the fare, combined with the exquisite and engaging presentation makes the nutritional component of an active escape here a very memorable highlight.

ROOMS

Each one of the 13 en-suite rooms have their own unique look and feel and are adorned differently. Having never experienced perpetual sunshine that runs far into the night, I was mildly worried about sleep interruption, but the rooms have perfect remote controlled blackout blinds to ensure delivery of a terrific night’s sleep, on vast beds with fluffy pillows. The finish is of a lofty quality, giving a reassuringly high quality sensation the moment you step into your room and start enjoying the details and touches.

THE SPA

Cement walls with wooden imprints. Minimalist, Scandinavian symmetrical. Floor to ceiling glass with a spectacular 3 wall view of the mountains outside. This country’s need for a hot bath and a restorative spa experience is, understandably, significant. This was one of the things I looked forward to the most at the end of an active day!

There’s an outdoor Hot Pool where one can lay on the immersed sleep beds – this is an exceptionally relaxing experience. Indeed, it’s possible to swim from the inside of the spa to the outside, and during winter, to sit in the hot pool surrounded by snow watching the Aurora Borealis cascade above. That sounds like the definition of magical, so I shall have to return to experience it!

There’s both an outdoor and indoor sauna; indoor offering floor-to-ceiling windows so you can sit inside and gaze out at the mountains, lake and sheep grazing in the fields. The outdoor sauna sits inside a little hill, much like a hobbit home with perfect access to the Plunge Pool…

The plunge pool enable something that’s very much a Nordic bathing ritual. Traditionally, as Swedes we used to (and still do) carve a hole in the ice, sit in the sauna and then when we’re just about ready to melt, we plunge into the icy cold water… Then back into the sauna, and repeat. This is very much the same, and is unlike anything you’re ready for; the cold hits you like a wave of heat. It shocks the entire system but you feel so alive, so energized, and invigorated. And bizarrely, when you step out of the water, a gorgeous sensation of warmth pulses through your body, tingling up and down. It is unworldly and absolutely amazing. There are a host of medically proven ‘immune system’ benefits to this practice, but it’s the lasting sensation of contentment, as if my body is smiling, that I take away from it, for the rest of the day. A must!

Then there are the extensive range of treatments, the Sleep pod, and the ability to enjoy a session under the Northern lights in Winter!

THE FITNESS ETHOS

This country takes its health and fitness seriously; there is no fast food chain on the island, simply because when a major one opened up, nobody cared to go there, so it closed down. Children start with sports early – football, handball, swimming, and teachers emphasize the importance of proper nutrition to improve results.

Fitness competitions are big here, I know one Icelandic fitness winner myself and there have been several Strongman winners from Iceland including Magnús Ver Magnússon and Jón Páll Sigmarsson. People are outdoorsy and the climate requires strong mental determination – the lifestyle is ingrained in both the national psyche and people’s DNA – men work hard on fishing boats, historically carrying stones, and fighting as Viking warriors.

WRAPPING UP…

I could keep going but you’ve stuck with me an awfully long time now. In short, this is magical. The country is unlike anywhere else I’ve been. Deplar Farm hotel is truly the most refined and comforting way of experiencing Iceland that I could imagine. So many aspects of this escape have been astoundingly remarkable that it doesn’t really fit into the classification system of places I’ve previously visited. It has a unique energy which generated a compelling vivacity within me for quite some time after my return, and THAT is the sign of something special.
