13 books meme

Was tagged by @missroserose (thanks!) and BOY am I bad at reading books these days, so this kinda made me feel bad. (i'm not counting fanfics in this, even though I have several of those printed in book form)

1) The Last book I read:

"Sovande jättar", "Gudarna vaknar" and "Bara människa" (it's a triology) by Silvain Neuvel. (in English: "Sleeping Giants", Waking Gods" and "Only Human")

2) A book I recommend:

"The flat share" by Beth O'Leary for some light reading and feelgood feels. It's so cute!

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

"The Martian" by Andy Weir. I literally got late back to work from my lunch break because I Had To Finish It.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

I mean, lots of them. If I have a favorite, I will return to it like I would an old friend. To mention a few, "Grottbjörnens folk" by Jean M. Auel (English: "Clan of the cave bear") and the follow-up, "Hästarnas dal" (English: "Valley of the horses", I think) because I'm a sucker for someone just ... surviving and thriving. "Dimestore magic" and "Bitten" by Kelley Armstrong. Trilogin om Frihetskrigen (The Freedom War Triology?) by Niklas Krog. "Vingmästarens dotter" by Bertil Mårtensson. And of couse "Good Omens" by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

5) A book on my TBR:

"Runaway Max" by Brenna Yovanoff. One of these days, I'll get to it ... at least the Billy scenes, lol

6) A book I’ve put down:

"Call Me by Your Name" by André Aciman. I didn't actually put it down because I was determined to finish it, but it was a struggle. I'm sure it is very good, but for someone who isn't into a) romance or b) sex, there just wasn't that much else for me to latch onto in that book. Not much ... plot.

7) A book on my wish list:

Gregory Crewdson, "Eveningside 2012-2022", but I've been hesitant to buy it so far because I can't rationalize spending that much on a book. But listen, he is a fantastic photographer and I've loved his work ever since I first saw a documentary about him on TV, ages ago.

8) A favorite book from childhood:

"Skattsökarna" by E. Nesbit (in English: "The Story of the Treasure Seekers"). Man I did NOT know what all those currency meant when I was a kid but it seemed FANTASTIC to have that many friends and adventures. <3

9) A book you would give to a friend:

"I'm with stupid" by Gene Weingarten and Gina Barreca. It was a fun and eye-opening book, lol (that is actually due for a re-read soon).

10) A book of Poetry or Lyrics you own:

"Complete poems" by Dorothy Parker. I have read the whole thing and I love her. I love Dorothy's poetry. So witty, so RHYMING.

11) A nonfiction book you own:

"Saxat ur Starlet" by Kristina Öhman. It has me ROLLING laughing. Starlet was a comic that I read a lot when I was a kid, and this book has taken random images from those comics and added commentary, and it is HIL-AR-IOUS.

12) What are you currently reading:

Nothing that ain't fanfics, baby.

13) What are you planning on reading next?

Book-wise? I don't know.

Soon after I got to Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, my Fred/Alan colleague, Tom Barreca, joined up, running the Enterprises group (he developed our characters into award winning partnerships), and he introduced me to a recent hire in his group, Eric Homan.

And a wonderful 30+ year cartoon relationship began.

Eric and I played a lot of roles together, from animation art to Frederator-on-the-internet (he critical to the founding of Channel Frederator and Cartoon Hangover). But, really it’s the cartoons.

Eric is most known and successful because of his development of the entire Frederator slate from 2004 on, starting with the Nicktoons Film Festival, and on through Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, Random! Cartoons, Too Cool! Cartoons, and GO! Cartoons. And, not for nothing, Eric and Kevin Kolde double handedly ran Frederator Studios when I lived on the East coast and was starting up our YouTube channels, among other things.

But he’s rightly most revered for his roles in Pendleton Ward’s Adventure Time and Natasha Allegri’s Bee and PuppyCat. Networks and streamers like Netflix, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Max, Amazon Prime, Cartoon Hangover, and Channel Frederator owe a lot to Eric Homan.

(And lest you be skeptical about the work that goes into the “development” of cartoons led by such stellar creators, remember that Eric personally sifted through at least 5000 shorts pitches for our 60+ creator led shorts and honed in on the creators that created the series that spun off. I might have founded the studio, but Eric carried the weight.)

By the way, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you the crucial role Mr. Homan played in Adventure Time’s life. As part of his constant search for special talent at Frederator, Eric visited end-of-semester student film showcases at CalArts outside of Los Angeles. In the early aughts, he caught a film of junior Pen Ward’s and introduced himself; the next year, they bumped into each other again and a month after graduation, Pen pitched his AT board. A few weeks later, Pen pitched me. 

And I turned it down.

At the end of a long day of not-so-great presentations, Eric, Kevin Kolde and I retreated to my office to review. I made the classic executive mistake of thinking I knew what was right.

“He doesn’t have any professional experience. His drawing is primitive. We don’t make student films here.“

Eric and Kevin were surprised, they loved Pen and his idea. They pushed. I pushed back. And then Eric delivered the zinger.

“You try to be polite, you usually have a fake laugh in our pitches. But you actually laughed with Adventure Time.”

Busted. Eric knew me better than I did, and he knew a great piece of work when he saw it. The rest is history.

There are more stories that I can tell you. It comes down to the fact that’s Eric’s role in the modern history in cartoons is unique. Bottom line, it’s been an honor to work with Eric Homan, and not for nothing, we continue to collaborate in the wide world of cartoons. Thanks bud.

I’ve posted often about my mentors, the people I’ve learned the most from. And I’ve noted how often how many of them beg to differ as to whether or not I should credit them as such. So, I’ve calmed down in my titling. But still...

When I was a marine, we wore green cotton fatigues. We would take them to the cleaners and have them starched so that when we put them on, we had to "break starch" by parting the legs and arms so that we could push our legs through. We also had black combat boots that we usually spit shined every day.

A few years later, in the Army, it was mostly the same, but the uniforms were lighter and were supposed to be permeant press, they weren't. In 1980's the camouflage battle dress uniform became the approved work uniform.

After retiring, I still worked on Army posts in Europe and Louisiana. I saw the uniform change three or four times during those years, and they wear ruff brown boots that don't need shinning.

Accolta la richiesta del legale del muratore 54enne che si è autoaccusato di aver ucciso la moglie Antonella Salamone e i due figli ad Altavilla Milicia Giovanni Barreca (Fotogramma) Sarà eseguita la perizia psichiatrica sul Giovanni Barreca, il muratore di 54 anni che si è autoaccusato di avere ucciso la moglie Antonella Salamone di 40 anni e i due figli, Kevin di 16 anni e Emanuel di 5 anni, nella loro casa di Altavilla Milicia. Il gip del tribunale di Termini Imerese ha autorizzato il legale dell'uomo a procedere con la consulenza psichiatrica di parte. In carcere con Barreca ci sono anche la figlia 17enne e una coppia, Massimo Carandente e Sabrina Fina, tutti accusati di omicidio e soppressione di cadavere. Il gip: "Torture atroci sulle vittime" Salamone e i suoi due figli, scrive il gip di Termini Imerese nella convalida dell'arresto, "sono stati torturati attraverso l'uso di un asciugacapelli rovente su alcune parti dei loro corpi e sulla bocca, attraverso l'uso di alcuni attrezzi da camino incandescenti su varie parti del corpo, sono stati colpiti più volte con una padella". "Al piccolo Emmanuel veniva, inoltre, iniettato del caffè amaro in bocca al fine di indurlo al vomito e il povero Kevin veniva legato alle mani e ai piedi con delle catene dietro la schiena in modo da impedirgli al respirazione, sebbene lo stesso abbia strenuamente tentato di difendersi provando ad aggredire la coppia Carandente-Fina" che avrebbe aiutato Barreca a uccidere i familiari per "liberarli dal demonio". "Ogni particolare rende particolarmente atroce la dinamica criminale posta in essere dagli indagati, con particolare pervicacia ed intenzionalità", si legge nell'atto. Massimo Carandente e Sabina Fina "hanno agito in preda ad una forma di delirio mistico, da quanto rappresentato dall'unica testimone oculare delle torture e delle uccisioni dei familiari, ritenendo di agire in esecuzione della volontà di Dio per allontanare i demoni presenti all'interno di quel nucleo familiare". "Tale forma di delirio non può ritenersi però, in alcun modo, un frangente di estemporanea perdita di controllo, in quanto la loro ferma convinzione ha portato i tre correi a riunirsi per giorni all'interno dell'abitazione familiare Barreca-Salamone ponendo in essere diversi agiti criminosi ai danni delle stesse vittime, prima di decidere consapevolmente di cagionarne la morte in modo particolarmente efferato". "Il corpo di Antonella Salamone veniva addirittura dato alle fiamme ed il suo cadavere veniva occultato dagli stessi indagati, alla presenza dei tre figli della stessa, i quali sono stati costretti a presenziare a tali atroci gesti ai danni della loro madre", scrive ancora il gip.L'autopsia conferma sevizie e torture L'autopsia, eseguita sui corpi delle tre vittime, conferma sevizie e torture. Il medico legale ha confermato l'esistenza di traumi ripetuti e anche tracce compatibili, in particolare, con delle bruciature sui corpi di Kevin ed Emanuel Barreca. La donna sarebbe stata data alle fiamme dopo i riti a cui sarebbe stata sottoposta dal marito Giovanni Barreca, ma anche dall'altra figlia diciassettenne, e dalla coppia di palermitani Carandente e Fina. Strage di Altavilla, arrestata la figlia: ha partecipato al massacro. È stata arrestata nelle scorse ore anche Miriam Barreca, la figlia sopravvissuta nella strage familiare di Altavilla. Nella conferenza stampa degli inquirenti, il procuratore di Termini Imerese ha spiegato che anche lei, 17 anni, ha partecipato ai riti di “purificazione” in cui «sono stati torturati i fratelli, Kevin ed Emanuel, e la madre, Antonella Salamone», poi uccisi. La 17enne si è presentata alla Procura per i minori il 14 febbraio scorso, tre giorni dopo il ritrovamento dei cadaveri, quando già era stata affidata ad una comunità protetta. Agghiaccianti le sue rivelazioni, in seguito alle quali il magistrato ha disposto il fermo per omicidio pluriaggravato in concorso e occultamento di cadavere. Miriam ha rivelato il suo pieno coinvolgimento nei fatti e, interrogata davanti al suo legale, ha rivelato quanto è accaduto. Sembra dunque, secondo quanto ha spiegato il procuratore Ambrogio Cartosio nella conferenza stampa, che «la partecipazione alle torture sia stata corale». «Confermo - dice Cartosio - che il piccolo di 5 anni è stato torturato prima di essere ucciso». «Il rito collettivo - riprende il procuratore - era iniziato da un mese e coinvolgeva tutta la famiglia Barreca e la coppia di Palermo, che avrebbe partecipato al massacro. Erano tutti preda di un delirio mistico».  Le vittime e gli assassini, lo stesso Barreca e i due complici, dunque, «avevano cominciato un mese fa una sorta di rito di purificazione dal demonio, poi sfociato negli omicidi».
