Comics Read 5/22-29/2022 

Following up last week’s selection of one of the last weeks with the last of the trade paperback purchase in my last weekly comic book shop trip pre-pandemic. Both this and last week’s reads got a surprised “this looks cool” from the sales clerk who otherwise might never have heard of these titles. As someone who is a little invested in the idea that I am not cool, I didn’t quite know what to make of that response. But as it turns out, I would call this read, High Level written by Rob Sheridan with art by Barnaby Bagenda and  colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr, really cool. And not just in that it works for my nostalgia by being the last trade paperback I will ever read published under the Vertigo imprint. It doesn’t seem like there is any more of this series than what is collected here, but I have waited longer for follow up comics. 

The book bills itself as “post-post apocalyptic” which mostly means that there are some interesting rebuilding, but it is still war torn chaos and a lot of what's normal now has been forgotten. The plot involves a free lancing scavenger being roped into transporting a young, special girl named Minnow to an unreal sounding place known as High Level. It’s not the most original plot, but it is engaging and the lead characters are likable. The issues themselves work pretty well as stand alone. The art is colorful and dynamic without feeling muddy or busy, something I appreciate the difficulty of after seeing it go wrong many times. It refreshed my love of these kinds of stories. No wonder I want more.

It reads cinematically and has gorgeous visuals.
