Abbas Attar's photographs of Dhaka on December 16, 1971: when the Pakistani Armed Forces finally surrendered to Mukti Bahini, ending the nine-month Liberation War and 1971 Bangladesh genocide and marking the official secession of East Pakistan to become the new state of Bangladesh. Bangladesh commemorates this day as Victory Day (বিজয় দিবস) to honour the martyrs who laid their lives down in the war.

February 21 is named International Mother Language day by UNESCO.
In case you don’t know, Ekushey February is a day of remembrance for Bangladeshis. On February 21, 1952, students of Dhaka University and other members of the community were holding a protest to have Bangla (Bengali) recognized as an official language of the country. At the time Pakistan was ruling over East Bengal (now Bangladesh), and had declared Urdu the official language of both East and West Pakistan and prohibited the learning/teaching/speaking of Bangla.
That day, demonstrators were tear gassed and police opened fire, killing 29 people.
Almost 20 years later, East Bengal would face a bloody genocide that was largely ignored by the United States even after Archer Blood sent Nixon and Kissinger multiple telegrams describing the massacre and atrocities being carried out by Pakistan and its sympathizers. Hindus were largely targeted in this genocide as Pakistan wanted to create an Urdu speaking Islamic country, while Bengalis just wanted to live as Bengalis regardless of religion. Tactics such as humiliation, false imprisonment, and sexual assault were used large and wide.
Bangladesh survived and rose out of the bloody and brutality into a young nation. It’s still a country that has many struggles, issues exacerbated by Operation Searchlight.
After the war was won, funnily enough Israel was the first country to reach out to Bangladesh and say it recognizes Bangladesh as an independent country. However, Bangladesh refused Israel’s recognition and proceeded to outwardly support Palestine’s support for liberation. Bangladesh publicly supported Palestine during the 1973 Yom Kippur War and sent medical teams and supplies to help Palestine.
To me, the liberation of Palestine has been a matter close to my heart simply through birth, before I even knew what liberation meant I knew Palestine required it. The liberation of my people is interconnected to the liberation of Palestine. As a child of genocide survivors, hearing their stories, and seeing genocides take place in front of my eyes is heartbreaking and distressing. But I also continue to have hope, because so many countries have faced the same and at the end of the day they were the ones that came out on top.
One day, just like Bangladesh, Palestine will be free.
Joy Bangla and Free Palestine.

शानदार आज़ादी: बांग्लादेश मुक्ति संग्राम विजय दिवस (16-दिसम्बर-1971)
Written By Shafeek Ahmad, Published On 16-December-2023. …

that one line about ramy's bangla being rudimentary made me absolutely sob (i'm bengali) and i wanna talk about why
there's so much to it both contextually with ramy's character as well as historically. contextually because ramy is fluent in 6 languages, an insane number of languages for one person but none of which are his mother tongue. he's described as a performer, one who knows he can't blend in so instead he stands out as a means to escape as much of the racism as he can. he gets lost in it that he almost forgets who he is; this is reflected in his language ability too – he gets so lost in his linguistic academics he just barely remembers the native language of his home place that he adores.
and honestly, you can't even really blame ramy for it at all when it was induced. it's the british who saw urdu, arabic and persian as more valuable than bangla, it's the british that make ramy put on this act so he can literally stay alive. and when you know the historical relevancies between urdu and bangla, it hurts so much that ramy was forced to forget bangla
very brief history context: after the partition, where british india was split into india, pakistan and east pakistan (now bangladesh) bangla was seen as inferior to urdu due to its hindu connections. bengalis experienced so much shit because of this (and bengali muslims are still dealing with the internalised cultural racism today honestly). pakistanis tried to make the official language urdu, even though literally everyone in east pakistan were bengali and spoke bangla, so bengalis fought back against it. we still celebrate that day today (feb 21)
so to have ramy be in this position in the 1830s where urdu was seen as superior to bangla, especially when ramy is a bengali muslim, is just extremely accurate?? and maybe it's bc we don't have much western literature where we talk about this but it's just so nice to have it acknowledged
the bangla language movement didn't happen until around the 1950s, over a century after babel's timeline, but the seeds are always there. while i do think it comes with both this islamic superiority tendency a lot of asians have (arabs i'm looking at you) and britian's imperialistic racism, i just love how it all makes sense

Report: Prithvi Festival 2023 - Hindustan Times - Edu CG
When Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre, a stone’s throw from Juhu beach, announced its line-up for the 38th edition of the annual Prithvi Festival, I rushed to my wall calendar and promptly blocked most of my evenings between November 3 and 13. This is a time of the year that I look forward to because – corny as it may seem – Prithvi is not just a place, it is an emotion for those who continue to be drawn…

I am starting to see some west bengalis say that Bangladeshis aren't bengali because the majority of us are Muslims? Like what? Religion and Ethinicity are different things. And it's truly offending to say to a Bangladeshi that we aren't bengali. We suffered and fought and died to speak our beloved bangla. How could you even say that. And having a different dialect doesn't make us any less bengali and some done seeing some West Bengalis have a superiority complex because you guys sound more posh. Bangla is bangla. It's our beloved mother tongue, our lands are sisters divided by a white man. Why must we fight? Most of our families are from the opposite side. You still eat ilish with joy and us chingri with love. At our core we are the same, we are bengali. This post is to share love.

Over 1,000 Bangladesh war heroes' families seek justice against Zia's executions
Over 1,000 Bangladesh war heroes’ families seek justice against Zia’s executions
By Sahidul Hasan Khokon: In 1971, all of them put their lives on the line against a heavily armed Pakistan Army, fought relentlessly and won the war to create the independent nation of Bangladesh. Before joining the war, many of them couldn’t even bid farewell to their families. As they fought the Pakistan Army, their families went through a double trauma — an agonizing wait for the safe return…
