I started this piece by breaking down a reference photo so I could get the basic dimensions of the face down, then shaded in where I wanted the shadows to get my composition down. From there I sketched out the character's features and roughed out some ideas for the lineart before moving into the inking stage. I recently downloaded/customized a bunch of my brushes to get some that felt/looked like natural ink to me, so I used those to get the graphic linear quality for this piece. After that, I blocked in my shadows, using an asaro head as a lighting reference to place them, and color picked the characters colors from their reference. I used a gradient map over the whole piece to unify the colors, then went in with a pale yellow to get some rimlight. Finally, I went into the background with my halftone and hatching brushes to create texture and contrast. I duplicated the lineart, filled it with green/red violet, and shifted it just enough to create a glitch/3d effect, and then roughed out a quick black border.
