with kindle ebooks there shouldn't be a button! for books published pre-2023 you can just download them with an old version of the kindle app and then import the azw files and it will strip the drm automatically, though you have to convert them to epub manually afterward. with ebooks published in the last year it gets... complicated. in my case i have an e-ink kindle device, so i download them on the website using the 'download and transfer via usb' option and then have the serial number for my kindle entered into noDRM to it can crack them on import. basically post-2023 if you don't have a kindle serial number you can use it's easier to just buy books on kobo.

india: amazon alternative for ebooks

today i am Very Mad because i caved and bought a Bunch of ebooks on amazon (firstly because i couldn’t find one of them on trusty 🏴‍☠️ site, but also because these are mostly non-rich authors and i like to pay for art when i can)

amazon SAID some books are DRM-free because the publisher specified it (Tor i am kissing u on the mouth) but i found the .azws on my computer and i can’t open them with calibre and i am very Put Out

because i  h a t e  not having accessible files of a thing i bought with money!! and i am also very appalled that the Kindle reading app just by default snoops on your highlights and tells everyone else in the world that you’ve highlighted something?! aside from the very disturbing (but now commonplace) privacy violation, how can you even engage with a thing unmediated when there are little things popping up saying “people think you should pay attention to this”?! i honestly feel creeped out just reading it, not to mention i refrained from highlighting things. i could go on about this. i shall stop.

anyway 2. hopefully all is not lost because i have a sicrit anti DRM procedure on my older laptop and i will try to get non-snooped-upon copies of the books i bought today using that.

but the point of this rant (finally!) is that i assumed amazon was the only reliable international option for, y’know, internationally-published books. (no guarantee that non-Indian publishers’ websites will accept humble local debit card credentials—Tumblr Blue certainly doesn’t. and i spent valuable procrastination time trying and failing to find a bookshop on Tor dot com itself; some (most?) publishers don’t have their own storefront.)

so. kobo exists, and at some point i will try and buy a drm-free book from there to test if it’s really drm-free, and i will update back. (some listed prices are lower on kobo, too—don’t tell amazon, despite me tagging this post amazon.)

in the meantime, running a search for drm-free ebooks might be worth your and my time.

So as far as i know, it doesn't download the author links, bookmark information, and I'm not sure about comments either. There's still a lot to learn about how FanFicFare works, though, and I've been taking a break from it lately. Though I do intend to get back to it.

You can use the url for a page of bookmarks to download fics using the option to download from a web page of story urls, but I think you're meaning the info on who has bookmarked a specific fic? Which is certainly info that would be nice to be able to have on copies of my own fics that I've downloaded. (Also the comments, would love to preserve those comments for myself.) So this is something I'd love to figure out too.

For now, you could manually update an ebook using Calibre's Edit Ebook functionality. It can edit epub and azw formats and while I haven't fiddled with azw ebooks, epubs are basically zip files with html inside. It's a little more complicated than that, but it is kinda what they boil down to. You could add a new chapter at the end of the fic that way - you'd probably only want to do this to completed fics that you won't want to update/overwrite later on - and append a copy of the html from the bookmarks page/the comments/whatever you'd like to put in there, including links back to the author's main page. (If I can't find another solution then I will probably do this to preserve the comments at the end of my fics - I've gotten such lovely comments from so many people and I'd hate to lose them.)

Or you could add additional meta data columns and manually update them with links to the bookmarks, author's page, etc. That would not be overwritten by subsequent fic updates and would be significantly easier than learning to edit an ebook file (though I am gonna do a tutorial at some point on how to create an ebook of a fanfic by copying the html data into an empty epub file). The fic itself will already have a meta data link back to the fic, or series the ebook is a copy of, in the id field of the metadata part of the book's preview pane. Now the preview pane won't display the entire url, just the archiveofourown.org section of the url, but clicking that link will take you to the fic itself. You can also grab the full url by going into Edit Metadata and copying it from the id field there, which will display the url in full. That won't take you directly to the additional fic data you're looking for, but it should only be a short hop from the fic itself to the rest of the info.
