Tw: mentions of being buried alive, mention of gore and death.
He's been digging for hours now and he isn't stopping until he reaches them. He knows they're still alive, he just knows, so he keeps digging. He digs, despite the Captain saying they're a lost cause. He digs, despite it being hours since the tunnel collapsed. He digs, because they are human and alive and he'll be damned if he lets them die.
Everyone else in the camp is asleep, not caring, not giving a single damn that he's digging or that lives are at stake here. They sleep, because he's awake and will alert if something happens. They sleep, because the dogs would go nuts if the enemy was approaching. They sleep, because the horses would make a ruckus if there were incoming shells. They sleep, because humans need sleep.
Someone was helping him earlier, despite the Captain's protests and orders not to. A sergeant, Arthur something. He's not good with names and the humans are fragile, they could die very easily and he knows he'll likely outlive everyone who fights beside him on the front lines. Arthur passed out some hours ago, on the dusty ground that's now almost taller than he is, which says something, since he's about 6'8.
He doesn't blame the man for falling asleep, he's only human and humans aren't meant to be awake for so long. Steam sputters from his cheek vents as he sees the soil move below his shovel. He throws it out of the hole, landing just beside his sleeping companion. He thinks the man mentioned one of the three buried men is his brother and another is a friend of theirs.
He digs with his mechanical hands now, until he unearths two hands, attached to an army uniform, and it gives him even more vigor to dig, because the being within his reach is still shaking and breathing, cold and afraid, but alive, just like he'd said they would be.
He moves the dirt fast and soon enough there's leeway for the human to get out of the collapsed tunnel. He looks young, gaunt and frail, but when his wild blue eyes land on him, the young man practically tackles him in a hug. He's sure it's uncomfortable, but it's likely adrenaline and relief that makes the young man cling to him. He gently places his own arms around the man's back to return the hug, if only to offer some sort of comfort to someone who thought their end was here, just moments ago.
When he gets the young man to release him, finally, he tilts his head up and calls, "Sergeant! Wake up!" His voice is thick with dust and the rust that's grown around his voice box in the years out here. He hears the man above grumble something, then shouts again, "Sergeant! I've found them!"
His previously sleeping companion darts up, still half asleep and slipping on the dust, but the gaslamp flickers on and he looks over the edge of the hole, much more awake when he seems to recognise the blue eyed young man. Arthur throws his arms down to pull the other man up and the machine gives a leg up from within the hole.
It's less than a minute until he's out and the two men are hugging, whispering words in a language he couldn't understand, but he assumes this man is Arthur's brother. His attention turns from the reunited brothers to movement in the loose ground. There, a leg is kicking at the dirt, struggling, it seems.
He bends down, takes a solid grip on the ankle and pulls to see if there's any give. There is. He drags another man back towards the opening and when he sees an arm, he pulls on that instead. The man's head comes out and he's like a firecracker lit off, so he calls to the brothers above ground.
Arthur and his brother bend over the edge and help pull the man out, their mechanical saviour helping from below once more. He hears them say a name. Danny. So they've recovered a brother and a friend. Once the Captain wakes up, he can report the good news to him. This digging wasn't in vain or a lost cause.
There was a third though, and upon further digging, he decides to leave him there. A strut had split the man's skull in half. It was a gory mess. He resigns to asking for the man's name from the other soldiers and reporting to the priest on camp to send a prayer to whichever higher being they believe in. He'd pray for them, but he's sure no higher being would listen.
Straightening up, he makes a small jump to grab hold of the edge of the hole and pulls himself up. Arthur and the other two grab a handful of his uniform jacket and try to help pull him out. He's too heavy for humans to move him that easily, but he appreciates their attempt. They are trying to share the kindness he spared for them.
When he's up, he tells them to return to their beds for the night, maybe go see the camp's medic in the morning. He spends another two or so hours filling in the hole, lest someone ends up falling inside a 7 foot deep hole on night patrol. He doesn't mind that Arthur takes the gaslamp with him, he can see just fine without it.
Several days later.
The soldiers were in the mess tent, so he took his chance to go tend to the horses. He unsettled some of the humans, so he tries to make himself as scarce as possible unless they're in the middle of an active battle.
He'd just finished brushing one of the stallions when he heard two sets of footsteps enter the poor excuse for a barn/tent/thing. Steam vents from his cheeks and he grabs his water bottle to refill his boiler.
Someone knocks on a nearby crate to get his attention and he turns dutifully, crouching down slightly to appear less intimidating. "How may I help you boys today?" He asks, trying to sound friendly.
"Lieutenant," one of them greets.
"Sergeant. Sergeant-major," He greets back, recognising them as Arthur and the clay-kicker he pulled out of the ground the other night.
"I wanted to say thank you, for the other night. The Captain admitted he'd ordered you not to try and dig us up, but you did anyway," the clay-kicker, the Sergeant-major, said.
He shrugs, grabs one of the horse-brushes and makes to finish brushing the second horse. "It's preposterous to leave someone behind in that situation," he tries to deflect. Humans didn't usually interact with him if they could avoid it and this one was outright thanking him, something no one has done before. He wasn't sure how to react.
"Thank you," he says again, stepping closer to him this time. Arthur stays where he stands, a tired smile resting on his face. He seems at ease, but he also seemed that way several times before when they've worked in close quarters together.
"I'm Thomas Shelby, by the way," Thomas holds his hand out for a shake. He looks at the outstretched hand for a moment, surprised, then remembers his manners.
"Entropy," he says, giving a firm shake. He logged that name as important and the conversation turned to the horses instead.
They didn't know it at the time, but this solidified the start of a much closer connection in the years to come.

I was stressing quite a bit about this prompt because I’m not good at robotic stuff, I’ve always been too scared to draw it but this just came so easy to me somehow, I didn’t even need to do two sketches like I normally do I just got it good first try. I don’t know if I’ll sell or keep her, I don’t think she’d be good enough to sell, I’ll just have her up as entertaining offers until I decide I suppose.

Meet Keeper, a mechanical magician!
Beneath his white silicone skin is powerful and intricately-engraved metal machinery, allowing Keeper to move around and perform much like a human would! However, he seems to be hiding far more than metal parts within his chassis...

Arthur
Tumblr media
Cw: PTSD, swearing, war related violence, wounds and blood mentioned, improper war happenings.
It happened all at once, they were fighting with the enemy, as was usual, with some of their men underground. There's open fire both ways, bullets screeching through the air.
He's got a rifle and is firing as fast as he can, plenty of men around him doing the same. Then a grenade lands somewhere nearby and Danny takes off, running back to the tents. The Captain will likely deal with him later for 'abandoning' his post.
Someone pushes the line of fire forward, but they end up too close to the minefield and get blown to bloody pieces, that's when it happens. In his peripheral, Arthur just sunk to his knees. He hopes he's only hit and not fatally wounded, they've become sort of like friends ever since that night some months ago.
Then Arthur springs up, eyes looking like a mad dog's and firing at nothing and everything at once with his gun. The medic runs over to try and calm him down, but to no avail, he gets thrown several meters to the right. Steam vents heavily from the openings in his cheeks, but he can't risk to look away from the fight at hand.
Arthur is shaking violently and two or three men can't even get him to calm down and return to his senses. His metallic footsteps fall heavy on the dirt underfoot.
He keeps firing at the enemy, but starts slowly making his way over to where Arthur seems to be raging. Once he gets within reach of the man, he moves quicker than before and manages to clamp his arms around Arthur's midsection, pinning his hands and arms there. Heavy metallic clanks sound where their guns hit the dirt, but Entropy can't really care about that for now. They'll have to clean and fix them later. It's okay.
Instead, he starts dragging a struggling Arthur towards the tents. Arthur shakes and throws his body around, but he can't get out of the grip of two metallic arms. Entropy is steaming so much in worry, his uniform lapels are starting to look waterlogged. He needs to drink water after this settles down.
The gunfire is quieter when they're between the tents and Entropy drags Arthur into the tent he knows the Shelby brothers and Danny share. Arthur is running out of steam and fast, he's just twitching now, not full on struggling anymore.
Entropy sees Danny hiding in the corner by his trunk, shaking and muttering nonsense. He puts Arthur on his bed, it's more like a cot but anyway, and stays within arms reach of the man. If he tries to bolt, he'll be easy to stop again. They'll get in trouble, but it's okay.
There's blood and dirt on Arthur's face and hands and they can only hope it isn't his own, so he grabs a random rag and starts wiping the debris off Arthur's face. It comes off and there's no palpable injuries, thankfully.
Arthur's shaky hands pull the rag out of Entropy's metallic ones and starts wiping them as well, apparently not liking the sensation of blood on his hands. He's muttering in that unknown language again and Entropy considers going to find Tommy. He's technically a lieutenant, he can pull and redirect the soldiers if the situation calls for it.
He puts that on the back burner when a dark spot makes itself known on Arthur's side, blooming on his uniform. Entropy gets to that immediately. The uniform shirt is torn, so he coaxes Arthur into taking it off. Left in his undershirt, it's apparent that the cause is an entry wound.
Arthur grabs at his hands when he prods at the wound, trying to see if it was shrapnel or a bullet that caused it. Either way, he needs one of the medical cases. Thankfully every tent has a minor stocked medical kit.
As he tries to move away to go get it, he can see it from where he stands, Arthur has him by the wrist again, refusing to let go of him. He still can't understand him but his eyes convey a need. The need to not be left alone, even for a second. So instead, Entropy calls out to Danny.
"Get me that medical kit!" It was supposed to be a request, but it comes out more as a stern order and Danny jumps to his feet, muttering something vaguely like "Yes, lieutenant!" And runs over to grab the kit, before heading over to give it to the mechanical man.
Entropy mutters his thanks, opening it and crouching down properly to reach the injury better. Arthur is still holding onto his wrist, but he's not impeding his movements, so Entropy allows him to keep holding on. He isn't sure where Arthur's mind is at the moment, but if holding onto him means he feels somewhat grounded, then so be it.
He makes quick work of the wound, sterilising it and finding the intrusion. It's thankfully just a chunk of metal scrapnel and it's easy enough to remove. Arthur makes pained sounds, but doesn't try to stop his work. He's sure he'll get an earful from him or Tommy later for it, but for now, it's sort of peaceful.
The piece of scrapnel clangs as it hits the dusty ground. He sterlises the wound again before checking for more pieces. Thankfully, he finds none and instead sterilises a needle before threading it.
Arthur may or may not have passed out and woken up several times while Entropy stitched him up, at one point moving his hand from the machine's wrist to just beside his left cheek vent. It wouldn't be all that weird, if Entropy wasn't aware the steam runs hot and could burn him. Maybe Arthur is using it as a way to keep himself awake. Entropy hopes it doesn't cause more damage than it helps.
He finishes up and makes quick work of bandaging his midsection, it didn't look like any vital organs were hit, just flesh.
Arthur sighs heavily once he's done and proceeds to plop down on his uninjured side on the bed. It isn't long before he falls into a fitful slumber. Entropy decided to pack up the medical kit.
He's barely done packing everything away when Tommy storms into the tent, looking somewhat frantic, but he calms considerably when he sees not only Arthur, but also Danny and Entropy in the tent. Nonetheless, he goes straight to Arthur's side.
*****
The Captain had not been pleased that two soldiers and a war machine had 'snuck' off during active battle, so the three of them were all given a suitable punishment.
Said suitable punishment, was to clean up the stables and after the horses.
Danny groans as the Captain's horse swats him with it's tail for the umpteenth time, leaning against the dilapidated wooden door.
Arthur throws a scathing joke at him, making Danny jokingly yell some sort of insult back at him.
Entropy shakes his head at their antics. After all, they are human and humans cope through humour oftentimes.
It isn't until a clump of muddy hay is thrown at him that Entropy truly pays attention to the two young men. He sidestepped the hay, thankfully, but chucks an old horseshoe at Arthur for it, who dodges and laughs at the situation, before groaning because of his protesting injury. That makes both Danny and Entropy give laughs of their own.
"Thought you boys were supposed to be working," Tommy says from the door, voice holding just that touch of humour as well.
"We are! We are," Arthur answers him. Danny just scrambles back to his feet to continue cleaning.
"Either way, I think you boys deserve a break," Tommy adds, getting all three of them to go closer to him out of curiosity.
He hands Danny and Arthur some coffee and gives Entropy a bottle of water. They take the offered drinks thankfully and take seats on the haybales while they drink.
