REQUESTS ARE OPEN!
summary: you couldn’t believe it, your eyes, your heart, your brain - not everything was as it seemed. plus, ghost has a few… choice words for you.

Next Parts! Obvious | I Heard A Rumour
Tumblr media
“Holy fuck.”
Whispers won’t save you now.
You watched the building explode into an inferno through your sniper rifle scope, your left hand immediately on your radio.
“Anyone from 141, copy! This is Riot.” Your voice was almost shaky, almost panicked - you just had eyes on Soap and Ghost before Hassan’s assholes exploded the building into flames. “Copy!” You could only watch in horror from your position as figures crawled out of the flames, silently screaming as you felt tears prick your eyes.
“-Price.”
“Captain?” Your voice almost began to shake as you watched through your scope - enemy soldiers were vacating the building. So, you began to pick them off. “Captain, what’s your status?”
“We’re pinned down - Shit-“ Another explosion. “Call for backup!” One, two, three more bodies drop by your rifle before your body went on auto-pilot, calling Graves in for an immediate evac. Pulling your bolt back, reloading another bullet as you continued to pick off men on fire, trying to put themselves out because they weren’t Price, Gaz, Soap, or Ghost.
“Evac is five minutes out, Riot - get in there and get them out!” Graves’ voice entered your ear, you pulled back your bolt again, watching as the enemies now slowed down at the threat of your bullet.
“The place is engulfed in flames - the enemy is all around the building, I’m picking them off so they can escape.”
“That’s an order, soldier.”
Pull back the bolt.
Wake up.
“What did you say?” You stifled an alarmed noise from your throat as you stood now, holding your rifle at your side. “Graves-“
“Evacuate the Task Force, Sergeant. That’s an order.”
Your voice didn’t feel like your own, when you looked down at your hand, it felt disconnected from the rest of your body.
Wake up, Y/N.
Your hand went to your head, your eyes closing as you whispered, “What?”
Wake up.
When your eyes opened again, your body erupted in intense pain, a gut-wrenching scream leaving your lips. Your hands immediately tried to lift away from your sides but was met by handcuffs, trying to fight off the assailant from continuing to hurt you-
“Riot. Ri.”
“Fuck off!” You answered, teeth immediately gritting and eyes closing again. “Fuck! Don’t you have any morphine?!”
“It’s either keep the bullet in or take it out, Riot.” Price.
“What-What happened?” You exhaled, still feeling some sort of metal dig into your stomach, almost screaming again. A hand gently pressed onto your forehead, pushing your head back onto whatever surface you were laying on. If you had free will of your hands, their neck would be wrung like a towel.
There was a cough a couple feet away, you took a deep breath again, trying to not scream again as you assumed that Price was the one pulling out a supposed bullet from your abdomen. “They released some sort of gas in the room, you were the closest to it and you sort of went berserk. Price n’ I were already out and Ghost had to get ya.”
You squeezed your hands tightly, trying to breathe but it was getting harder. “Ghost.”
“‘Ere.” How close his voice was almost scared you, you opened one eye to see that familiar mask hovering above you, it was his hand on your forehead.
“Morphine’s in my pack.” You whispered through your teeth. He looked up and away.
“Soap - get Riot’s med-pack,” Ghost barked, he looked towards Price. “Can’t you hurry up?”
“I’m sorry that my medic is on my table.” Price snapped back, another jolt of pain and another scream left your mouth.
“For fuck’s sake-“ You couldn’t look at Ghost anymore before closing your eye again. “Soap!”
“I’m comin’, dammit! Give me a second!”
You began to feel numb now, head rolling to the side and eyes into the back of your skull. The throbbing in your abdomen disappeared completely and all you could hear was the sound of your heartbeat and the distant words of Ghost.
“Riot, Riot!”
•••
When you woke again, you recognized the ceiling. It was a beautiful ghostly blue, which meant you were in Vienna - the Vienna safe house. How long were you out?
“Y/N.”
If you had the energy to jump out of your skin, you would’ve. Your eyes darted to your right, noticing as Ghost walked towards you. Your head felt like cement, every part of your body being held tightly by chains. Your throat was itching.
“Water.” Ghost reached behind him and detached his canteen from his pack, unscrewing the cap as he finally placed himself in the seat beside you. He reached forwards, one hand pulling down your chin and the other not-so delicately pouring water into your mouth. If you weren’t so damn thirsty, you would’ve coughed it up but you drank every drop.
Ghost pulled the canteen away, moving his touch from your chin and you only stared at him. He screwed the canteen shut, eyes not meeting yours just yet. “Simon.” Your voice was just a croak but his head still moved up towards you. You couldn’t tell what he was thinking right now, because of the drugs in your system and the balaclava on his face. You would be able to if he looked you in the eye and in the next twenty seconds you magically became sober, but you’re not - you’re stuck in a shitty bed in a shitty safe house with injuries that you couldn’t name just yet. “What…what happened?”
“Russians. Threw in some kind of mind-control gas and it only really effected you - you almost killed me. And when you missed me, you almost-“ Ghost cleared his throat, still looking down at your bed as he sat back in his chair. “They stabbed you, shot you in the abdomen before I could take em out. I-I’m sorry.”
Then the fire must have been a dream.
“And about what I said the other day-“
“Simon.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to just- hurt you.” That was the moment you two locked eyes again. If you didn’t know all that you did about Ghost, you would’ve thought he gave you just a blank stare. But there was guilt, a hell of a lot of it. “No. No, I shouldn’t have told you that I regretted what I said to you our first night.”
You stared at him now, still feeling the heaviness of the drugs but also the intense feeling of confusion. “Si…”
“You mean everything to me.” He whispered, didn’t even dare to breathe as he continued, “I know you don’t want a relationship with me, I can live with that. I know you don’t want others to know, I’ll live with that too. I can’t live if you aren’t mine.” One of his hands reached forwards, pressed gently against your cold cheek. “Tell me I can be here for you, tell me that I can stay because I want to. I was a fuckin’ asshole for saying that I wouldn’t stay with you - I just- I just didn’t know how deeply I loved you. Still, love you. Because I saw you so helpless, I couldn’t do anything and I realized just how important you are. To my friends, to my team, and to me. So, please…”
If you had any control of your body, you would’ve held his hand. Would have leapt into his arms but your brain took hold again, ever the cautious Riot.
“You’ll never leave?”
Ghost nodded.
“Good.”
He smiled, you knew it by how his eyes closed a little.
“Guess you’re haunted now.”

Hel
Drop: -10:00:00
The Seraph died, torso armor and cockpit ravaged by PPC blasts and LB 10-X auto cannon rounds. Owen switched targets, raking a Deva with his ER Medium Lasers. The enemy mech responds with a Gauss rifle slug which slams into the left leg of Owen’s mech. He grunts with the neural feedback of the damage dealt. Quickly checking his armor, he was relieved to see that the round hadn’t penetrated the armor.
“Atta girl, Katherine, gonna take more than that to take you out.” He grins at the chime indicating his ER PPCs are recharged. “My turn!”
The twin PPC bolts snap out with thunder cracks, blasting into the Deva’s right arm, tearing away armor and hopefully, damaging the Gauss Rifle there.
Seconds later, the arm explodes, the Gauss rifle evidently having been damaged enough to overload. The Deva staggers, allowing Anya to light the other mech up with her Clan Pulse Laser, and Clan Medium Lasers, green and blue beams cutting into its armor in multiple places. It swings, and fires its Light PPCs at the Thunderbolt, two missing and one blasting into Anya’s torso armor. Owen hears the small sharp intake of breath over the comms. It pays for this damage by catching a LB 10-X slug to the cockpit fired by Owen. The enemy mech shudders, and then slumps over into the side of a nearby building.
“You ok Major?” He asks.
“Yeah…fuck that hurt…” Anya replies. “But I’ve still got armor, I’m good.” She sounds tired.
“Christ we all are.” Owen thought. The fighting had been fierce, and nearly constant since they landed. The city, a small place named L’Anerie, had turned into a near constant running battle between Barghest Company and Fursona's Fusiliers, and the Word of Blake. The city was a maze of buildings just tall enough to obscure sight lines more than a few blocks, and it seemed like it was filled to the brim with enemy mechs, weapon emplacements and ambushes. They had lost several Fusiliers to Heavy Level II’s lying in wait, and several of his own mechs are badly mauled. Billy’s Archer is missing an arm and the LRM launcher in one side torso, and Vance’s Thug’s damaged leg is now almost locked up. Not to mention all of his mechs have had their armor savaged. And the ammo situation…
Owen sighed a bit. He always knew it would be a bad one.
Still.
In the next street over, Victoria and Vance have brought down an Archangel with Kei providing large laser and missile fire. Victoria wrenches her mech’s hatchet from the enemy mech’s side, as well as pulling the retractable blade, and the arm attached to it, from her left torso armor.
“Ugh…don’t know how much longer we can do this, boss…” she says, over comms. “Got a hole in my left torso armor.”
“Yeah, Envy’s pretty banged up too.” Kei added. “Also I’m soooooooo hoooooooot….uuuuuuuugh….”
“Understood.” Owen replied, checking the mini map. The forest of red dots had been reduced significantly, leaving only several small pockets and one decent sized one left.
“We good to move forward, sir?” Maria asks, ever professional. Her Mad Cat had lost a good chunk of it’s armor, and was down top a quarter of its missile load, but still functional.
“Hell, I’m ready to pack it in, few more scraps like this and I got is a fucking pair of medium lasers left, might as well spit at em at that point” The gruff voice of Billy adds, ever the blunt one.
Owen considered, they were banged up, but still largely functional.
“Sir….I have found something” The soft voice of Elenor appears over the comms.
“Report Lt, what’ve you got?” Owen asks.
“Civilians, sir…a lot of them…” She replies.
Owen feels a familiar weight in his chest at what might come next. The Word was never kind to the civilian population of the worlds the conquered.
“…report status of the civilians, Lt.” He asks.
“… scared, sir.”
Owen lets out a sigh. Great…just great…
He pushes several buttons and keys up Savannah’s frequency.
“This is Garm 1 to Fursona, we’ve got a situation here. A civilian situation, over.”

do you have a theory as to why the signalis rifle is a double barrel over under and not something more modern liek a semi auto or a bolt action even? seems pretty clunky to arm the androids with a gun that can only fire two shots at a time
probably the same reason they use crts instead of flat screens- it just fits in with the game better. The rifle is kinda the strong but slow weapon I guess

is there any mosin-nagant chambered in 7.62x39?
I dont think there is. Now there are Bolt actions in 7.62x39, but they are fairly recent rifles that have nothing to do with the mosin nagant, i think. There are however semi auto rifles in 7.62x39 (like the SKS)

I just got to thinking back to a conversation I had with a friend back in 2019. I was thinking about getting an AR-10. I wanted a semi auto rifle as a possible fighting rifle in case I need it and I wanted a .308 for a possible hunting rifle for elk to get more versatility out of it. My buddy completely disregarded my reasons and tried to convince me I need a bolt action 6.5 creedmoore. They are super accurate at 1,000 yards man! It'll be a great precision rifle! I wasn't looking for a precision rifle. I rarely get the chance to shoot past 100 yards so the extra accuracy isn't relevant. I wanted .308 because it's a well established and widely available round. Dude told me it's a dying round. 6.5 is better in every way so I might as well make the switch now because before long 308 will be a relic and I won't be able to get the ammo anyway. Like 4 months later covid hit. All ammo flew off the shelves. 6.5 is still available, but nowhere near as easy to come by as .308. Suck it Jim! lmao.

I haven’t seen anybody talk about this yet so...
Luis’s gun is a Mauser C96, a semi-automatic pistol (for anybody who doesn’t know what a semi-auto firearm is, it is a repeating firearm that has an action mechanism that automatically loads a following round into the chamber to prepare it for subsequent firing. however, the gun does require the shooter to manually pull the trigger to discharge each shot unlike a fully auto gun where the trigger can be held down).
In particular, he uses the M1916 Prussian variation. That variation was named the Red 9 due to the large red 9 burned onto the grip. This was because the M1916 took 9mm rounds instead of 7.63mm as the standard. The 9 was put on the gun to remind the users not to load in the wrong ammunition. (Note: If you load the wrong ammo into a gun, it can stop the gun from firing and damage the firearm).
Tumblr media
The Mauser C96 guns were manufactured in Germany from 1896 to 1937 but remained in use in military service until 1961 despite the fact that after WWI, the gun was considered outdated.
The gun could hold ten rounds at a time.
Unlicensed copies of the Mauser C96 were also manufactured in Spain and China during the first half of the 20th century.
As shown below, there is nowhere to insert a mag into the gun as the magazine base is closed and solid and there is no release switch. This is because the Mauser C96 has something called an internal magazine.
Tumblr media
That part just before the trigger is the box mag and there is an opening at the top of the gun above the mag. To load a Mauser C96, you need to use a stripper clip which is a speed loader whose purpose it is to hold cartridges together for faster reloading.
Tumblr media
To fully load a Mauser C96, you need to take the stripper clip, load it into ammunition clip feedway as shown in the image above and then push the rounds down into the magazine with your thumb. Be careful, however, when reloading, as an incorrect reload can close the bolt on your thumb.
The Mauser C96 also has a detachable stock. The stock gives it the stability of a short-barreled rifle.
Due to the shape of the grip, the Mauser C96 was nicknamed the ‘broomhandle’ whilst in China it was nicknamed the ‘box cannon’ due to the shape of the magazine as well as being able to be holstered in its own stock.
Tumblr media
To apply the safety on a Mauser C96, one must have the hammer up (if reloading the Mauser, you cannot apply the safety onto the gun) and then push the safety up as well which draws the hammer away from the firing pin. Reloading the Mauser is a bit scary because if you are not careful with the gun, you can accidentally shoot yourself or somebody else. Always point a gun away from you and others, no matter the firearm you are carrying and practice trigger discipline.
To actually fire the gun, of course put the safety down and then cock back the hammer.
The Mauser ejects cartridges upwards so it is possible for the cartridge to come back and hit the shooter. Reminder: Bullets are EXTREMELY hot and if you are hit with a freshly fired one, it can burn you.
The Mauser C96 has a pretty good reputation for its accuracy and range. But I’m sure you all are more interested in knowing how it does power wise given Resident Evil 4 has it as the most powerful handgun in the game.
Yes, the C96, and in particular the Red 9 that Luis uses, is powerful. A Mauser can shoot clean through a watermelon (a watermelon and a human head have about the same density).
However, whilst many enjoy firing a Mauser, it’s not exactly a good handgun. It has some problems, including a propensity to jam, and I’ve seen plenty of comments of people saying it’s awkward to use.
I’d say that Luis likely uses the Red 9 as a memento from his grandfather as I can’t think of another reason Luis would be using the gun (not to mention he’s a scientist, not a fighter so another reason he might have grabbed whatever to defend himself and he likely learned how to use it and the rifle he has in Mercenaries from his grandfather).
(I know a lot about guns but am no expert so if anybody has any corrections, let me know!)

Vanguard Class: Hunter
Preferred Subclass(es): Solar, Arc, Stasis
Alignment: Light/Vanguard
Faction Alliance: Rebel Alliance/New Republic
Jumpship: Velocimancer or T-65 Headhunter
Species: Exomind Lightbearer
Species quirk: 1. Inorganic sapient, unable to use the force. - "Look we're not droids. We're just... people with full-body prosthetics. We got transferred from one body to another. Simple. So before you go judging us, remember that just because you guys have the tech for looking more human, doesn't mean we do." -- Echo-17 to an examining med-tech 2. Light Bearer - Paracausal Light (just known as Light) is an energy that generates life in unexpected places. Much like the Force, Light flows through the universe but very thinly, only enough to get the seeds of Life started on worlds hospitable to it. One form of this life is the Light Bearers - beings who generate their own Light thanks to their inorganic yet still symbiotic partners known as Ghosts. Together, they can generate and use condensed Light in miraculous and often explosive ways. Such beings are gathered and trained to hone their skill for the betterment and defense of their home, people, and the Traveler - the source of their Light & originator of their Ghosts. -- "Light brings Life and Life brings the Force, and Guardians are meant to defend it." -- "Devotion inspires bravery. Bravery inspires Sacrifice. Sacrifice brings death. And from death, Light brings New Life." -- Because Light (paracausal) is so thin so far from the Traveler, Guardians are only able to generate enough light to use their abilities once or twice per day. This Light is measured by "charges" or how much Light is used by their individual abilities, and how long each ability recharges. Because of the lack of sustained Light, fully charged/rested guardians only gain about 5 charges. 1 charge per ability & 1 per revive. Light Charges can be stored in modified power packs, 1 charge per power pack. They are expensive and require glimmer and expertise.
Class Abilities: -- Grenade ability (1 charge, 24 hr recharge): Arc Bolt/Solar Flare/Stasis wall -- Melee ability (1 charge, 12 hr recharge): Solar Knifes/Arc stab/Stasis shuriken -- Class ability (1 charge, 6 hr recharge): Hunter's Dodge (generates 1 charge for another ability) -- Super ability (1 Super Charge/3 Charges, 48hr recharge): Solar Blade Barrage, Arc Spear, Stasis Storm
Ghost Abilities: -- 1 Revive/Resurrect per 24 hrs/3 light charges after that, Scan (gathers info based on biology, technology, topography, etc.) --- Disassemble (breaks down and processes small amounts of matter or items into programmable matter called Glimmer.) -- Assemble/Matter Hack (assembles small amounts of Glimmer into other items. Very difficult.) -- Heal (1/4 charge based on damage.)
Weapons: - Primary weapon: Perpetuals auto rifle, lunalata bow - Energy weapon: Sunshot hand cannon, Enigma glaive - Heavy weapon: Golden Tusk sword, Sleepless rocket launcher
Inventory: - Glimmer: 5000 - Current armor - 1 spare set of armor - 1 armor care kit - 1 minor exo repair kit - 39 ration sets (from the ship) - 1 large first aid kit (from the ship) - 1 large ship repair kit (from the ship) - 1 bedroll & pack - 1 set of dnd dice - 1 set of uno cards - 1 sketchbook - 1 long-range radio (from the ship) - 1 evac/survival kit (from the ship) - 3 spare ghost shells (including 1 hive ghost shell) - 1 set of Bubble Gloves (hive ghost containment gloves) - 1 surveying kit (from the ship)

mac & meta & accidental retcons
I've spent a lot of time over the past year and a half poring over MacCready's life & times while writing fic about him, so here's a little something from me, the CEO of the Useless RJ Knowledge Braintrust, for fellow RJ fans!
Did you know MacCready's gun in Fallout 4 is a modded version of the basegame F4 Hunting rifle?
Tumblr media
After adding a long barrel and full stock, it becomes his signature sniper rifle. The player can build it using a workbench.
The closest real-world gun I have been able to approximate it to is the Winchester Model 70. It occupies a fascinating place in the history of firearms - this rifle was an improvement upon the Winchester Model 54, itself being part of the jump from lever-action to bolt-action that was innovated by the Mauser Gewehr 98.
Tumblr media
Long story short, it has a fantastic reputation in sport shooting, and a gun known as "The Rifleman's Rifle" might as well be the perfect firearm for RJ. In my books, knowing the gun is still in production in today's world, it makes sense there would be Model 70s left over for RJ to find after the bombs.
Tumblr media
An American original, much like RJ himself.
Although!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Fallout 3 Official Game Guide: Game of the Year Edition, we know the Lone Wanderer met him when RJ was 12. In Fallout 3, he has a R91 assault rifle - it even takes 5.56 ammunition, not the .308 ammo the rifle takes! It is based on the Heckler & Koch G3, a selective fire rifle (can be switched between semi/full auto). Decidedly not a bolt-action sniper rifle!
The Fallout 3 sniper rifle and its unique variants are not bolt-action either - all three are semi-automatic weapons.
However.. Perhaps this is where there was some confusion - here's the Fallout 3 hunting rifle.
Tumblr media
Seems.. familiar, no? :D
(In-engine RJ screenshots are my own! Other images are not)
(Somewhat disclaimer? Sometimes retcons are done on purpose, sometimes they are genuine oversights. This is likely the latter. One way I always remember to extend grace to AAA developers is remembering that crunch is real and shit has a tendency to run downhill, which means the boardroom that makes the decisions affect the ability of the people making the game to maintain lore consistency.)

Hello there. I have a question, or rather a doubt, regarding long arms specifically. Are bolt-action rifles more powerful than, say, semi-automatic ones since they use the entirety of the energy to propel the bullet and send it downrange instead of redirecting the gasses to cycle the action and chamber the next round? And would it be useful or feasible at all to have a precision rifle that could work as a semiauto/straight-pull bolt-action by choosing its operation at will? Excellent work, BTW
If I just take the question, “are bolt action rifles more powerful than semi-auto rifles?” Not really, but that comes with a lot of caveats.
You do lose power from the gas tap. But, the power loss from a semi-auto rifle can be more than compensated for by mounting a slightly longer barrel. More than that, and this is really important to remember, it doesn't matter. If you take a high power rifle round fired from the next zip code over, it will not matter if it was coming from a bolt or a semi-auto, it will still wreck your day. When you're discussing the amount of power behind a bullet, you're really worried about how far you can throw a chunk of metal, it's not like the gun does less damage on impact.
Similarly, bolt-action rifles often have a reputation for being more accurate, and again, this is kind of true, but it's a little misleading. As with the power loss from bolt to semi, the accuracy loss on a precision semi-auto not particularly significant.
The central differences that results in larger discrepancies, is that, with all things being equal, bolt action rifles are lighter, and cheaper than semi-auto ones. (Technically, the, “cheaper,” benefit comes from them being mechanically simpler, which also results in a more reliable rifle, as there's less that can go wrong.) This means, you can mount a heavier barrel, which in turn can support higher pressure rounds. (Either, larger caliber, or just hotter variants of the same rounds.)
For example, the Barret M82 is a semi-auto .50 cal anti material rifle, it weighs about 30lbs. The Barret M95 is a bolt-action equivalent, and weighs slightly over 20lbs. And, when mounted with their standard 29” barrels, they have roughly the same effective range (slightly over a mile.)
While you're sitting here thinking about the relative accuracy and the value of a bolt action, remember that the record for longest range sniper kill set in 1967 using a scoped Browning M2 (at 2500yds) stood for over 35 years until it was unseated by someone using a Tac-50.
There's a real danger with firearms in thinking that the relative differences between gun designs are far more extreme than they actually are. In the Vietnam War, a sniper sitting on a machine gun, set a world record for their long range kill that stood until 2002. When we you're seeing someone saying, “x is more reliable than y,” or, “x is more accurate than y,” understand that these are usually incredibly minor differences.
Now, when you start talking, specifically, about sniper rifles, then you get into a situation where those tiny accuracy and power differences start to become more significant. When you're looking at sending a round more than a mile away, yes, an almost imperceptible difference in accuracy can become the difference between hitting or missing a human sized target. Of course, at those ranges, inclement weather, and the rotation of the Earth can throw off your aim, so there is a lot to consider, and there is a reason why the Tac-50, in spite of being a bolt action, is still a fifteen-thousand dollar gun.
As for your solution, those exist. Technically in two different forms, with very different intentions behind them.
What you're not talking about (nor explicitly interested in) are semi-automatic firearms designed with the ability to lock the bolt closed. The Makarov PB and some prototypes for the Mk23 SOCOM (which would eventually become the H&K USP) come to mind as immediate examples. Notably, these are both handguns, intended for clandestine use, and the reason the bolt can be locked closed, and then manually cycled by the user, is to reduce the noise made by the pistol when firing. (As a general rule, it's harder to suppress a handgun, than a rifle, because of the shorter barrel. You need to deal with more unburnt gas trying to escape), so locking the bolt, and preventing gas from venting out the action is one place you can cut the sound dramatically. I could swear there's a late Soviet era rifle with a similar design, but I can't remember what it is (and I'm relatively sure it's not one of the 9x39s. Though, I might be thinking of an AS Val or VSS Vintorez prototype variant that never made it into production.)
Hybrid-semi auto/bolt action rifles were experimented with in the first half of the 20thcentury. The only specific example I can point to off hand, is the SIG SK-46. This was a semi-automatic rifle, with a visible bolt. When the bolt was lowered, the rifle operated semi-automatically, while rotating the bolt up would lock the bolt... into the bolt... yeah, conventional firearms terminology stumbles a bit here, because most guns don't have two separate bolts. So, bare with me. Locking the bolts together would, engage a gas cutoff, and at that point the rifle would function as a straight-pull bolt-action rifle.
My understanding is that there were Italian and Swedish experiments with hybrid-semi/bolt action rifles, and I suspect there were other experiments with this idea, that are far more obscure.
I don't have any concrete explanation for why these rifles never saw widespread use, but I can guess. Remember that two of the major advantages for the Bolt-action rifles were their lower weight and mechanical simplicity. In the case of the SK-46, it's actually more complex than a contemporary semi-auto rifle. So, it amplifies the disadvantages of a semi-auto rifle of its day, without really replicating the benefits of a bolt-action. It's important to remember, there were less than 20 SK-46 prototypes made, so I'm looking at a video of Ian McCollum taking one apart, somewhat obviously, I've never even seen one in person. (And, judging by the content of the video, it sounds like this is one case where he doesn't have much background either.)
These hybrid rifles existed, but as far as I know, none really made it out of experimental testing. As I said earlier, I can guess why, but as far as I've ever seen, most of these experiments weren't particularly well documented publicly. This suggests, to me, that the experiments did not provide any meaningful value, and were quietly scrapped.
As a fun aside, if you're a sniper, you probably do not want a straight-pull bolt-action. The reason is, these have a bad habit of the bolt kicking into your face if you try to cycle it while maintaining a sight picture. You need to pull your head away from the rifle to cycle it, meaning you lose sight on the target. (Or, you can let the bolt bash your teeth in. That's technically an option as well.)
The short answer is that, first the differences aren't that extreme, and second the hybrid rifles did exist, but never made it out of prototypes.

HEILIGTUM, Lucifer's signature primary weapon.
A unique incarnon sniper rifle, Heiligtum boasts hitscan projectiles and extremely high accuracy while looking down its scope, along with very high per-shot damage all offset by recoil that kicks like a mule, slow firing speed, small magazine, and laughable accuracy when fired from the hip. Heiligtum's scope has two magnification levels which can be swapped between by pressing the alt-fire button while looking down the sights. Pressing the alt-fire button while not looking down sights will transform this weapon into its incarnon mode. The scope's default magnification level is 3x which includes a +30% bonus to headshot damage and its second magnification level is 5x which includes a +40% bonus to headshot damage. Headshots in normal mode build this weapon's incarnon meter which is consumed when firing in incarnon mode. Both modes use a semi-auto trigger. Normal mode shots deal mostly puncture, moderate impact, and low slash damage. Incarnon mode fires a one-meter wide beam with infinite punch-through which also triggers explosions with a 2 meter radius anywhere that the beam hits an enemy, object, or terrain. Both incarnon mode's beam and explosions deal pure radiation damage. Heiligtum has slightly above average crit and status, with 25% critical and status chance and a 2.5x critical multiplier.
EVOLUTION 1: Score 100 headshot kills with this weapon. Perk: Unlocks Incarnon mode.
EVOLUTION 2: Activate this weapon's Incarnon mode six times in missions. Perk 1: ALL-SEEING EYE: Adds a third scope level which increases magnification by 7x and headshot damage by 50%. Perk 2: GYROSCOPIC STABILIZER: Drastically reduces recoil and increases hipfire accuracy. Perk 3: BOLT ACTION: Reduces magazine size to 1 but greatly increases reload speed.
EVOLUTION 3: Score 50 multikills with this weapon's incarnon mode. Perk 1: POWER OVERWHELMING: Increases critical and status chance by +15% Perk 2: BLAST SHIELD: While looking down the scope this weapon generates an energy shield with a 1 meter radius in front of the user which deflects enemy attacks. Perk 3: TRICK SHOT: +100% damage while sliding or aim-gliding.
EVOLUTION 4: Kill a void angel with only this weapon equipped. Perk 1: BANE: Increases the effects of Bane mods on this weapon by +0.45x (reduced to +0.3x for Primed Bane mods). Perk 2: SYNERGY: Set Mods contribute double set bonus when equipped on this weapon. Cannot exceed maximum set bonus level. Perk 3: GORY SPECTACLE: Headshot kills cause enemies within 10 meters of the victim to become terrified.
EVOLUTION 5: Reach rank 30 and apply a forma to this weapon. Perk 1: QUANTUM EXPLOITATION: Incarnon mode gains +100% status chance and changes its damage type to match enemy weaknesses. Perk 2: HYPER BEAM: Incarnon mode beam width and blast radius are doubled, blast damage is increased by 50%. Perk 3: NO-SCOPE: Unscoped normal mode shots have a 50% chance to deal 1000% damage. Unscoped incarnon mode shots have +25% critical and status chance.

Ok, so his design later in the story is simple but noticable.
He wears a gasmask which he takes of rarely, but not never. He has a false left eye with a scar coming down from it, because lore.
The gasmasks left eye either has a Googly eye or a red plastic with a gray plastic on top that he changes to show emotions. Usually for humor.
He has some merchandise he "borrowed" from an apple orchard he went to on a mission. His ice-pick is painted a solid green, and he uses a variety of guns. He changes them depending on mission:
Thirty round silenced bolt action rifle.
A powerful magnum
Silenced lever action rifle
A assault rifle with a built in silencer
Just... All the pistols. All of them. Because he likes em.
And a gun he purposely made look like a bolt gun from Warhammer 40k. It sucks in action but it's funny.
And three different shotguns. One pump action, one full auto, one semi auto.
He also has a shovel. For smacking. And stabbing. And digging.
His bag is filled with different things to give him energy, from coffee to actual straight up adrenaline. It also contains survival supplies, spare ammo, and some miscellaneous stuff that he keeps for emotion reasons.
Yes there is a teddy bear. Yes he hugs it when he goes to sleep. No, nobody bullies him for it, he is like 6'7" and built. The last person to bully him (enemy soldier) for it got picked up and thrown at someone.
He also draws.
Fun fact: if you watched my warzone videos and paid close attention to the guns, you might notice some overlaps.
Hehehe, good to know :3

‘Recently witnessed a 30 rd. mag dump shoot-off between a pair of full auto and binary trigger operators. ‘Binary trigger won out. Do you have any knowledge and/or preferences in any particular binary model or brand?
Thank you for asking. I do not have any experience with binary triggers beyond using my buddy's AR15 and 10/22's with them installed. I know both were Franklin Armory, I do not know what models. I shot him a message so I can follow this back up with those models later. With that said they were fun to shoot, the select fire on them worked great in each mode as one would hope. I often see people compare binary triggers to, and with bump stocks, there is no comparison. I am from a pre-bump stock time, our bump fire device was a belt loop on our jeans, but I digress. There is no comparison between the two. Bump firing has a learning curve where as binary triggers have none. Bump firing, in every form I have ever seen it done or done it in makes your aimed fire less accurate and your hold on your firearm less than optimal. The binary triggers that I used did not have that failing. You held the rifle just like you would with a stock trigger, for the most part, your manual of arms was the same with the exception of a select fire mode switch added. We shot 20, 30 , and 60 round mags out of the AR and 10, 25, and a 110 round GSG mag that I still kind of want out of the 10/22. There was not one stoppage caused by the trigger sets, I found that quite amazing for the hundreds and hundreds of rounds we put out, often in a rapid pace. Had we been using bump fire, my experience tells me, would would have suffered stoppages due to the erratic pace of the bump fire devices. I hope that helps. Personal side note on my I don't own any: I grew up using bolt actions and lever actions, we only had two semi-auto rifles, an AR7 and a Remington Mohawk 10C, man those were fun shooters. When I joined the Army we were still using M16A1's (Semi-auto and full-auto fire modes.), I would not get an M16A2 (Burst fire Baby!) until late 1992 when I left Fort Bragg. In my opinion Fort Bragg wanted to keep hold of the "full-auto" mode a s long as they could. I rarely used full auto except to burn off ammo, and one time during the Gulf war. In full auto, even the smaller 5.56 climbs off target fast, so I never really thought of it as a real world life fire option. I prefer to make every shot count, M60's, M249's and M240B's were for suppression not M16's. Then came burst fire, The burst cam may be the greatest addition to an AR platform that has ever been created, you got the best of both worlds. Although most of my time in I carried an M21/M1A or an M40 when I did use an M16 variation it was almost always in semi-auto.
