Summary: “I will love you as misfortune loves orphans, as fire loves innocence, and as justice loves to sit and watch everything go wrong.” - Lemony Snicket Kay's comments: So. Back when this story first came out, I actually only started reading it because the summary was a Lemony Snicket quote, which I took as a very good sign and I wasn't disappointed, but also, the tags summed it up well: Wangxian get together sooner (before Wei Wuxian's death), but it fixes nothing. I really love that, because I think Wangxian getting together earlier would solve absolutely nothing and I loved the explorations of it and also, autistic Lan Wangji, my beloved, and also, Lan Wangji suffering chronic pain after the whipping and Mo Xuanyu's body being different to Wei Wuxian's original body and that being something he has to adjust too and I just love that. Part one is the main story, part two is a supplementary story from Wei Wuxian's POV. Excerpt: “Any fight you do now is to survive,” Wangji snarls. “To live to protect those you swore to! The boy you claimed as your own! The home you made!” “They’ll never let us! Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying babbles, sobs. “We must think of a way,” Wangji insists. “For everyone to leave. For everyone to live. Wei Ying, please.” “Lan Zhan!” There is snot smeared across Wei Ying’s face and his eyes are manic, red-rimmed and blurred with tears. “You, poor you, you peerless, you beautiful– you must regret, regret me, regret meeting me, every single day, every–,” “Never.” Tears drip down Wangji’s nose, off his chin. “Knowing Wei Ying, loving Wei Ying, was the best part of this life.” Wei Ying stares. He rips himself away from Wangji’s hands. “You can’t be here!” he wails. “Leave! Get lost!”
pov lan wangji, pov wei wuxian, austistic lan wangji, canon divergence, getting together, character study, introspection, miscommunication, hurt/comfort, thirteen years of wei wuxian's death, canonical character death - wei wuxian, angst with a happy ending, demonic cultivation, chronic illness, chronic pain, disability, recovery, permanent injury

Summary: “It’s alright, young master, the dogs are gone I promise. Can you sit up? We can help you feel better. Do we need to find your parents?” “Xichen,” Uncle says, voice uncharacteristically quiet. “Take Wangji back to Lotus Pier. I’ll take care of the boy.” Part of Lan Zhan wants to protest, but most of him just wants to go somewhere quiet so he can calm down. He lets Brother take his hand to lead him away from the sight of Uncle kneeling to tend to the boy's injuries. They turn a corner and then the scene is gone and he faces forward again, his mind racing. // “What’s your name?” the man asks and Wei Ying blinks up at him, surprised that he wants to know. “A-Ying,” he replies with a tremble in his voice and the man nods. “A-Ying. I am Master Lan. Where are your parents? You are hurt and you need tending.” Wei Ying sniffles again and ducks his head to scrub at more tears. “They’ll be back soon,” he replies, like he always does when someone asks. It was the last thing Mother had said to him before she and Father had left on their night hunt, and though he isn’t entirely sure how long ago that was now he still trusts her promise.
Mojo's comments: This series is EXQUISITE and it'll rip your heart out with love. POV shifts between the two children and Lan Qiren and you can't help but fiercely love ALL of them. This story is just serving up all my favorite dishes, and all I want to do is binge….
Kay's comments: Part one of the series is complete and part two is a WIP, but it's one of those series I can't get out of my head and will re-read again and again and it doesn't even matter that it's incomplete so far, because I absolutely adore it. Lan Qiren is trying his best here, but at the same time, it's not the perfect fix-it where everything gets magically resolved and he really needs to work hard to make it work and I love that. The two boys are also such a treasure in this story. I love it when Wei Wuxian's childhood trauma actually gets examined and austistic-coded Lan Wangji/selectively mute Lan Wangji is also a personal favourite.
canon-divergence, fix-it, austistic-coded lan wangji, canon-adjacent, homeless wei wuxian, angst with a happy ending, child wei wuxian, child lan wangji, good uncle lan qiren, malnutrition, selecetively mute lan wangji, family feels, parent-child relationship, except lan qiren isn't technically a parent, fluff, light angst, lan!wei wuxian, non-yunmeng wei wuxian, @eleanorfenyx
