Last song: The Mechanisms - “Loki”
Currently watching: last thing I had on was Good Omens 2, for a rewatch. I bounce around a lot. Before that it was some documentaries and the music video for The Proclaimers’ “Throw the R Away”.
Three ships:
Silrah (Farah Dowling / Saul Silva), Fate: the Winx Saga, on account of eating my brain the most currently.
Milathos (Athos / Milady de Winter), BBC’s Musketeers and more generally, because it is one of my once and future ships.
Corlys Velaryon / Rhaenys Targaryen, House of the Dragon, because they made me give an excessive amount of fucks in the show (blame to Eve but especially to Steve for being the captain of the fucking ship, as he should be).
Favorite color: darker cool jewel tones (I know it’s not one colour, shh) and wine red.
Currently consuming: steamed green beans and a tuna sammitch (lunch at proper lunch time? gasp!)
First ship: that I remember? Beverly Crusher / Jean-Luc Picard, ST:TNG. Even smol Charis went hard for the unresolved tension. 😂
Relationship status: single
Tagging (only if you wanna!): @somenamewithepineapple, @backjustforberena, @veritaserum07, @lustrouswhite, @jenni3penny, @lyliah7, @foullightdiplomatcreator-blog, @aserene, and @vera-dauriac. No obligation any which way!

monthly media recap: july 2023
read:
Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater - a very sweet and kind Regency fantasy romance. One of the reviews on the cover calls it "the definition of a comfort read", and I couldn't agree more. Since this is Tumblr, I feel like I need to add preemptively that maybe don't judge the way the fairy curse in the novel is written (that is, in a way that resembles and, imo, should be read as neurodivergence) before you've learned how it ends
Angélique: The Road to Versailles, Angélique and the King, Angélique and the Sultan, Angélique in Revolt, Angélique in Love, The Countess Angélique, The Temptation of Angélique by Anne Golon - books 2-8 in the Angélique series of historical fiction novels that... didn't age quite well, in my opinion, I'd say a 20th century author could do better even with the caveat that the 17th century people are not by any means supposed to act like modern people. But the plot is so gripping that I can't put these books down, and then there's also this motif of people helping each other even in the bleakest circumstances running through the entire story that makes it worth the occasional cringe for me. However, my cringe level is built on a lot of classic novels that are very much Product of Their Time so idk if I'd recommend these books to anyone. I am having a lot of fun with them, though
I guess it doesn't really count as a book, but it made me spend some time with the French dictionary to read the comics, so - I ordered one of these Three Musketeers zines, the Cavalier Jaune one, and it's a gem (and clearly made with such love for these books) and I'm really glad I got it <3
+ currently reading the next Angélique book
watched:
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) - very cool and creative and heartfelt, loved it!
Д'Артаньян и три мушкетёра / D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers (1978), Мушкетёры двадцать лет спустя / Musketeers Twenty Years After (1992), Тайна королевы Анны, или Мушкетёры тридцать лет спустя / The Secret of Queen Anne or Musketeers Thirty Years After (1993) - finally watched all three of these adaptations of the d'Artagnan romances, I've only seen the first one before in bits and pieces. The first one is delightful and has so much funny stuff I totally forgot about, such as Constance biting her assailants and Rochefort & Milady singing to Richelieu an offensive song the people of Paris wrote about him. The second one is mostly fine, even despite the ridiculously clumsy attempts to retcon the book stuff that wasn't in the first movie (yeah, right, d'Artagnan sacrificed the ring that the queen gave him to try to save Buckingham, and Lord Winter has met the Musketeers before, this was totally included in part one). I didn't like the changed ending, though - I think it's important that it is Athos who kills Mordaunt, what with the possibility of Mordaunt being his son. The third part might be the stupidest attempt at an everybody lives!AU ever, but it gets like 2/5 points for the cast and the okay-ish first episode
Strange Days (1995) - cyberpunk noir, very cool, Angela Bassett as Mace is amazing
Vai viegli būt jaunam? / Is It Easy to Be Young? (1986) - the famous Latvian documentary about the life of Soviet youth, addressing topics from the punk subculture to the war in Afghanistan. A very interesting reflection of a generation; I think some parts are gonna haunt me
Stand by Me (1986) - summer, childhood in all its cruelty, and friendship that changes you forever. I might or might not have cried
Attack the Block (2011) - really enjoyed this one. Good social commentary? In my sci-fi comedy horror about an alien invasion? It's more likely than you think
L'Apollonide: Souvenirs de la maison close (2011) - beautiful and tragic. One of those films that feel like nothing really happens when in truth a lot happens. Also, women are my favourite guy (c)

Athos - Mount Athos Monk's Republic Documentary
Mount Athos on a peninsula off the cost of Greece is one of Europe's last remaining secrets: a monks' republic. Access to women is strictly denied and in order to keep unwanted tourists out, visas are granted only to pilgrims and workers. For the first time, a filmmaker was given access to all forms of monastic life on the holy mountain.

With the Farrar’s published the original contents of the Gardnerian Book of Shadows
1995 became a patron of the Center for Pagan Studies
Died of pancreatic cancer
Gardner & Bricket Wood Coven: during her time as High Priestess of the Bricket Wood coven she noticed a lot of information had been taken from Aleister Crowley. With Gardner’s permission she rewrote the Book of Shadows taking out much of Crowley’s influence. During this time she wrote a few incantations and chants that were added to the Book of Shadows. Valiente and a few other members of the coven were not happy with Gardner’s desire for publicity. Many of them worried about the covens security the more Gardner talked with the press. This causes two fractions to arise with Valiente learning one and Gardner leading the other. Valiente with Ned Fox created a list of proposed rules. Gardner claimed their were already such rules with the Wiccan Laws. Much of those laws actually limited the power of the High Priestess. Many believe he did that in response to her proposed rules. In 1957 she left the coven with a few of her followers.
Cochrane & Clan of Tubal Cain: while Valiente was skeptical about Cochrane’s claim he came from a family of witches. She did like the fact he wanted to stay out out of the public eye and work outdoors. Valiente eventually became unhappy with Cochrane who was blatantly committing adultery and drug use. He would often insult Garnerian Wicca and basically wanted to purge them in a similar fashion to the Nazi’s. She would openly challenge him and eventually left the clan. After Cochrane’s ritual suicide Valiente stayed in contact with his widow. She would work the group founded by the former members on occasion.
Pagan Front: the Pagan Front was a group that wanted religious rights for Pagans. She developed their inauguration full moon ritual. She was the chair of the nation meeting. Valiente developed the three central principles the group used: adhere to Wiccan Rede, belief in reincarnation, and kinship with nature. When she moved into the councils accommodation is where she meet Robert Cooke who would be her partner until his death.
Bibliography:
Where Witchcraft Lives
An ABC of Witchcraft
Natural Magic
Witchcraft of Tomorrow
The Rebirth of Witchcraft
Charge of the Goddess
Doreen Valiente – Witch
I could not find anything in particular about a controversy with Valiente. I did notice that while she was very much against covens being out it’s the public. She herself was every much a public figure within the Wicca community. She published many books, articles and was even interviewed. She openly fought for Pagan rights. This too me is a bit hypocritical you either want to keep things secretive or you don’t.

‘Four In A Bed’ and Boards Of Canada: Foals’ Yannis Philippakis’ guide to battling boredom in lockdown (part 2 of NME interview)
The frontman plans to spend his time off reading about cavemen and getting into soap. Sure, why not?
Lockdown – week five. How are you coping? It’s tough, eh? We’re all struggling a little for ways to distract ourselves from the endless scrolling doom of the news and really make the most of this time trapped inside.
Fear not, dear reader. To save your brain from turning to mush, Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis is here with some of his own top tips to stave off boredom, find inner-peace and keep the grey matter in shape while self-isolating – from sweet synth sounds to a soapy fetish. Enjoy…
1. Spend a night with Four In A Bed
“It’s wholesome, it’s nerdy and it’s specifically British. There’s a passive aggressiveness to it that I really enjoy. People are forced into confrontation with each other in the final episode. I love it. There are some great fall-outs in there. I love it when you get a couple who are overly negative of another person’s place but openly big up about how great their establishment is and how it’s the pinnacle of taste, then you get there and it’s full of crocheted doilies and little gnomes. People’s perceptions and reality come crashing to a head – and that’s where all the juicy stuff is.”
2. Enjoy Ed O’Brien’s new album ‘Earth‘
“I’m going to be spending a lot of time with this record. He’s somebody I’ve got to know over the last few years and is one of the few people who I feel that I could turn to for advice on a number of different levels – not just musical but deeper themes. We were well into the ‘What Went Down’ tour and I was full of booze and drugs and I get bumping into him and I said, ‘I really want to get myself to Mount Athos in Greece for a total change and to replenish myself’. He was one of the few people that understood that. I ended up going and that formed this kind of connection where he encourages me spiritually to be that person. He also met my mum after we played Ally Pally and she was impressed by him.”
3. Know your place with Werner Herzog
“I’m intending to binge on a lot of Werner Herzog documentaries in the next few weeks. I read this quote from him the other day where he was talking about how utterly indifferent nature is to us. Our existence isn’t guaranteed, and in some ways it hasn’t been earned. There’s a lesson in this: we need to reappraise our place.”
4. Drift away with Boards Of Canada
“I’ve been going back through their archive. There’s something that’s both futuristic and primitive about their music at the same time. They conjure up this imagined past. Right now we’re technologically advanced and are the pinnacle of evolution in some ways, but we’ve been taken out by something as ancient as a virus. They really suit the mood right now.”
5. Get into gardening
“I don’t have big garden; it’s just a yard and mostly concrete but I’ve got some raised vegetable beds. I’m growing veg and I find it super therapeutic. It’s good to feel anchored to the earth. It’s much easier and more rewarding than people think. I’ve got some foxes in my back garden and they’ve been getting quite cocky lately, but I like that. I want the streets to be reclaimed by foxes so that I can be proven right with my lyrics on ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost’.
6. Read about cave men
“There are a lot of books on my shelves that I’ve only ever pretended to read but am actually going to now before I get caught out. I was reading this book last night called Before The Dawn which is about the history of humankind. Homo habilis were one of our early ancestors. They made very crude stone tools and there was no modification of that for 800,000 years before the next step of toolmaking and evolution. It’s good to have something like that to put into perspective how much change there has been in recent times and how unnatural that is. That idea of constant growth is actually at odds with the way that nature has worked for millennia. I’d like to give a shout out to homo habilis for banging that same tool for almost a million years.”
7. Make your own soap. Sure, why not?
“I guess you could say I have a soap fetish. Well, not a fetish, but I’m into soap in quite a big way. I collect it on tour. I was thinking about trying to make my own soap or to try and review some soap. My soap addiction has been vindicated by the current cleanliness vibe.”
Foals will be taking part in #TimsTwitterListeningParty for ‘Holy Fire‘ on May 4.

Byzantine treasures of Mount Athos to be digitized
Tumblr media
An important and invaluable collection of manuscripts, codes and printed documents that have been stored for centuries in the Holy Mountain of Athos and faced the danger of destruction due to aging, will be stored in digital form, secured for many years to come — announced the secretary-general of Telecommunications and Hellenic Post Office, Menelaos Daskalakis, on the online system “Di@vgeia.”
As part of the project “Digital ark” the transformation of Mount Athos’ treasures into digital form will cost 8.5 million euros and its aim is to ensure their existence, even if the original prototypes ever get destroyed. The documents  to be stored electronically include collections of handwritten ecclesiastic codes that are stored in the monasteries. Up until today, students and researchers interested in their study could only access the documents in person.
“Furthermore, the need to protect such sensitive material necessitates their electronic storage with the use of sophisticated technology,” Mr. Daskalakis underlines in his statement. The project envisages the creation of eight access services to the digital archives of the monasteries, while for improved information and the accommodation of the public, a new portal will also be created along with the Holy Mountain Library and relevant documentaries. In detail, the archive will consist of 900,000 manuscripts, 450,000 printed documents, 550,000 historic archives of documents, 146,000 pieces of ecclesiastic art, 25,000 architectural sketches and 2,500 hours of video and sound documents.

have you seen the Romanian documentary Inside the Monastery Walls on YT yet?
I have not, but I believe I have it saved in my Watch Later playlist
Link for anyone too lazy to go look it up themselves
I’m a fan of the 60 Minutes segment on Mount Athos; they always play it around Orthodox Easter (at least on the channel at my Grandma’s house)

The average monk on Mount Athos or Saint Catherine's in Sinai has a thousand times more love and empathy than you. So please don't judge others, and read the writings of wise souls like them instead. At least watch a documentary on YT of Orthodox monks.
im not gonna become an orthodox monk
