armenians in the bengal region
during the 17th and 18th centuries, there was a significant armenian community in dhaka, bengladesh because when abbas the great conquered armenia, approximately 40,000 armenian traders specialized in inter-asiatic trade were deported to persia (more specifically isfahan) and were then moved to the bengal region (they inhabited many cities, not just dhaka).
armenians thrived there, they boomed in the textile business, they grew wealthy and in 1781 they commissioned the construction of a catholic church; the armenian church of the holy resurrection (armenian: դաքքայի սուրբ յարութիւն եկեղեցի / dakkayi surb yarutiwn yekeghetsi).
Tumblr media
due to the significant armenian community around the church, the quarter it’s in was named armanitola (bengali: আরমানিটোলা / i unfortunately do not know the transliteration, neither if it’s correct).
it’s not the only armenian church in the bengal region.
there are others in:
chinsurah (armenian church of st. john the baptist / armenian: սուրբ յովհաննէս մկրտիչ եկեղեցի / surb yovhannes mkrtich yekeghetsi), built in 1695 - 1697
Tumblr media
saidabad (st. mary armenian church / armenian: սուրբ աստվածածին եկերեցի / surb astvatsatsin yekeghetsi), built in 1758
Tumblr media
kolkata (armenian church of the holy nazareth / armenian: սուրբ նազարեթ եկերեցի / surb nazaret yekeghetsi), first built in 1688 and then rebuilt in 1724 after it was destroyed in a fire.
Tumblr media
the armenian presence declined under the british rule, and the last bengali-armenian reportedly died on may 9th, 2020.
