I’ve gotten a WAVE of asks about this AU, so I decided to flesh it out some more and answer some of those questions!
I’ll probably polish this extended summary up at some point and submit it to AO3. But for now, here’s a rundown of my thoughts–please feel free to send more questions! I’ll update this post if I get any more. But if you’re someone who wanted to write fic for it, don’t worry, you don’t need to take my headcanons as gospel. It’s a pretty basic AU honestly lol
Summary:
The portal accident results in a violent explosion that wipes out the whole block, and condemns all of Amity Park. Danny haunts the city for 100 years, before Sam and Tucker find him.
Setup:
In the 1920’s, 19-year-old Danny went into the incomplete portal on his own, hoping to help out his parents. Ripping the portal open through unnatural means created a huge burst of energy that resulted in a massive explosion. A good portion of the Amity Park population died, many were injured, and the ones on the fringes relocated–Amity was quickly deemed too dangerous due to the excess ectoplasm in the area that attracted ghosts.
While the disaster was in Amity, the fallout was seen around the globe. Before, natural portals were rare, short-lived, and rarely allowed ghosts to fully slip into our realm (the most severe cases being on par with poltergeists that most people didn’t believe in). Now, natural portals pop open frequently around the world, large enough to allow the entirety of a ghost into the physical plane. They’re more common the closer you get to Amity, but they happen enough elsewhere that this change was something of a small apocalypse before people settled back down and found out how to combat at least some of their new, permanent neighbors.
Danny is unaware that he’s only half-dead, believing he’s a full ghost. He ends up sticking around Amity, unintentionally making it his haunt. His grief and guilt over causing the death of his loved ones (and many others) makes him isolate and avoid human contact. Though he has, at times, scared nosy people away from the city in a mix of territorial instinct–and to get them to leave before a less friendly ghost finds them.
Ghosts are much more of an uncontested danger in this AU. Lesser ghosts are practically mindless, and while stronger ghosts are capable of reason, their interests are limited. They’re highly territorial, possessive, and often destructive. Most worrisome is that they also like to snack on the life force of anything alive. No one is sure what dictates a ghost’s propensity to attack or hunt the living for their life force since ghosts don’t exactly experience hunger. At least, not the way we do. If a human is rescued before their life force is fully drained, they can make a full recovery–though humanity has still not yet found what this “life force" is.
And since the Fentons’ research died along with them, there aren’t many tools available to the public to protect them from ghosts. Most homes have standard ghost shields and some weapons are available on the market, but certified ghost hunters are required to take care of anything more powerful than your average spook.
Sam and Tucker met in high school, and are now rooming together for college very close to the Amity border. Rent is surprisingly cheap when you’re a stone’s throw away from a condemned area crawling with ghosts. Sam is the one who drags Tucker along with her fascination over finding out more about the city, and its largely mysterious demise. Sam is aware of the danger, but feels ghosts have a place in this world just like everything else, and does exercise caution–like one would while foraging in the woods with a known tiger population.
What she and Tucker weren’t expecting was to run into a ghost that felt almost human. One that hasn't hurt them, not for lack of trying–while being powerful enough to walk past ghost shields without so much as a flinch. The long white hair is familiar in the whispers of the ectobiologist community, but there’s no way it could be the rumored ghost king Phantom, right?
About Danny:
He has very long hair, claws, and black sclera. His hazmat suit is more torn and ragged, with exposed hands and feet that fade into a burnt black.
His hair tends to float a lot on its own. It can start morphing into fire under duress.
He does still technically have gloves and boots, they've just charred and melted into his skin towards the ends. He can't take them off in his ghost form. His hands and feet have a leathery texture that's tougher than the rest of his skin.
The white of his hazmat suit is both supposed to look like flames, and also a battered look representing his more violent, explosive death.
Overall, he appears rather listless and sad, with an unnerving air of danger around him–even for a ghost.
Danny’s “ghost sense” comes out as white smoke.
He does breathe black smoke at times, usually when agitated.
He's already fought and defeated Pariah Dark by the time Sam and Tucker find him, technically making him the Ghost King. This is heavily speculated by ghost experts, despite there being no real proof beyond a massive battle that scarred Illinois. He has not donned the Ring or the Crown, and captured sentient ghosts are hesitant to answer questions surrounding him. Danny basically has the throne but doesn’t do anything with it, and finds it meaningless enough to routinely forget he has the title. He only fought Pariah because he knew otherwise, humanity would have perished. A lot of ghosts are scared of him because he's so hard to figure out, and he's strong.
Danny is usually very quiet and speaks softly, because his lungs were damaged in the blaze that half-killed him. He's technically healed since becoming a ghost, so it's more of a compulsion due to the traumatic memory. That, and he’s just… very forlorn and distant, shy around humans who don’t seem to understand how dangerous it is to keep hanging around him.
His memories pre-accident are extremely fuzzy. He knows the very basics of who he was, but specifics have been muffled due to trauma and isolation. He routinely forgets human habits, etiquette, etc. and tends to act more like a full ghost with some odd quirks.
He does try to scare Sam and Tucker off numerous times. Unfortunately for him, they realized they shouldn't have been able to escape a ghost that strong–but they did, because he let them.
Sam and Tucker think he's mute at first! He doesn't speak a word to them until several encounters later, when he fumbles his whole scary act and saves them from another ghost.
He’s still half-ghost, though he doesn’t figure this out until Sam and Tucker come along trying to unravel the mysteries behind the Amity catastrophe. Physically and emotionally, he’s been stuck for 100 years–so his human form is still 19. It’s unclear at this point if he can age normally like a human as long as he stays in human form, or if he’s immortal.
Danny's family did not turn into ghosts, though he sometimes worries he'll find them in the afterlife as shells of their former selves. He doesn't know if it's better or worse that he's not sure he'd recognize them.
(Danny also still has some living family. Take a guess.)
Yes, he knows how to Wail. Understandably, he very rarely uses it. You do not want to witness this.
Danny :) is not immune :) from the allure of eating a human's life force :)))

Parts of the fandom have spoken! I’ll share my self-indulgent skakdi and Zakaz headcanons.
While copying out my notes, they grew even more... Be aware that this is a longer post! I'll put the largest part under a readmore if asked for.
Edit: I was pretty tired yesterday, so I forgot to give shout-outs to @mothnem and @crystaltoa. Headcanon 1 started in a discussion between mothnem and I about their AU and they created some of the details that inspired my headcanons as a whole. Crystaltoa listened to my ramblings and gave feedback.
Please reblog this version!
-----
Headcanon 1: Some of the skakdi are part of the GSR’s immune system. Rather than warriors and shepherds protecting the workers as GSR’s internal structures directly like toa do, these skakdi keep the ecosystem and people healthy by dealing with sicknesses. All people in this area of jobs have cooperative elemental powers. (This is before the Awakening and some of the time after, prior to other political players interfering.)
One group are doctors. They can read living beings’ energy and determine whether or not they’re healthy by touch. If they’re not, they figure out the cause and craft medicine from protodermis. They have an easier time reading species created directly by the Great Beings or Mata Nui like their own, vortixx, stelts, or matoran.
Medical assistants help the doctors. Writing reports, fetching materials, watching over the process of medicine making, etc. Some of them are apprentices meant to become doctors themselves.
Another group acts similar to phagocytic cells. They are special operations who step in when contagious diseases appear. Immune to most diseases, sicknesses, and toxins; will not spread any even after prolonged contact with these things. These traits make them different from the doctors. But they’re able to read living beings’ energy, too. They are specialized in either of these three jobs:
Scouts. They – always six with the main elements – venture into areas with suspected or confirmed sickness, whether it affects the flora, the fauna, the people, or any of them combined. They determine sick plants by eating parts of them. If they can’t locate or touch living specimen, they eat remains of dead plants and of rahi to determine the cause. They create crystals from their findings and forward them to messengers to bring them back to the doctors to scan. Sometimes, they’ll send patients for better care.
Their job includes locating the focus of diseases, marking the area, and setting up quarantines where necessary. Scouts give emergency first aid to stabilize, including slowing down patients’ bodies / putting them into a coma by cooling them down or flushing out specific toxins via water energy. If they can’t save them, they give palliative care instead.
Contagious remains of Great Beings Creations (GBC) and of rahi, and plantlife, are burned. The remains are encased in stone and earth. Skakdi of air control that no airborne pathogens or embers spread.
Messengers. Quick on their feet, they work in groups of three to ensure their cargo – patients, medical crystals, notes, medicine – reaches their destination.
I have no designation for this job yet, but these skakdi tend to be the biggest and are heavily armored. Primary job: They protect the scouts (who are no warriors) from the flora and fauna. Their secondary task is a last resort: to destroy and eat highly contagious rahi and plantlife that have gone out of control. They can’t be cured or there’s no time to scout for a cure first. They ruthlessly kill them, eating the remains within seconds. They produce the same crystals as the scouts, but with more data.
The health specialists make up only part of the whole skakdi population. On Zakaz, a big part of what is created and built is for own use, like tools and devices to build houses and machines. Medicine and energy supply machines are the most exported goods. Some are farmers and fishers because eating food is seen as average part of life. Some are traders who bring back goods for further processing from Xia or Metru Nui. Zakaz also has doctors specialized in reparing and healing fellow skakdi.
In locations outside of Zakaz, skakdi do similar jobs to the other people around them, like smith work or teaching or being healers.
To repeat, this is how things were supposed to go.
-----
Headcanon 2: Specific organizations of and leading matoran wanted to gather more power in the GSR, over their own people and over others. They invented and spread several lies about the other GBC (Great Beings Creations), including that eating with their mouth made them barbaric and thus lesser (and dangerous). Along with these lies came sanctions and restrictions as well as the restriction of information to only what was approved.
One of such places was Metru Nui shortly before, around, and after the civil war. The aim was both to extort better trade conditions for Metru Nui and dissuade local dissenters from leaving because of the unknown. Affected GBC would also be less likely to host refugee matoran, seeing matoran in general as the source for their problems. And the turaga used that resentment as false proof of their lies. The Order of Mata Nui helped in spread of the propaganda.
Skakdi soon were met with suspicion and anger from their matoran peers. Many had to leave their previous homes because their work as well as their person were rejected. They rightfully grew resentful of them.
Makuta Spiriah’s arrival on Zakaz made things worse. Seeing potential for warriors in the skakdi because of their protectors, he trained volunteers in combat and strategy. He also modified a large group to be stronger and more aggressive, including installing the spine slugs.
Skakdi volunteered for many reasons. They feared attacks by matoran as well as xian forces. They wanted revenge. They feared Spiriah’s retaliation if they refused. They wanted to be able to protect themselves when dealing with rahi. They wanted power for power’s sake. They wanted to take control of Zakaz. They wanted to take control of the GSR (the Barraki had almost managed it, had they not.)
Not all inhabitants agreed to go with Spiriah’s plans. Whether it was the depths of the modifications or the modifications on their own.
All factors that created a metaphorical bomb for existing tensions to rise and explode. Spiriah lit the fuse when left the island and the visorak in charge of Zakaz.
How dare the Makuta leave them alone?! Many skakdi were struggling with side-effects that only appeared then – like uncontrollable and heightened aggression. The healers and doctors didn’t have the resources to help them.
How dare he put the visorak in charge?! It was an insult to the prouder inhabitants, already slighted by the matoran. Others feared Spiriah’s retaliation as well as what the visorak would do if they went against the horde.
In this confusion, the common question was: What to do now?
Social upheaval changed Zakaz forever over this. A civil war broke out that involved more and more inhabitants until half of Zakaz’s population was fighting each other. They killed the visorak during this conflict, having now a large, armed and trained force to fight back against them. They were also partly immune to their venom. Distinct factions evolved from the combatants, often led by people who fueled the war.
The other half of the population hid in fear of getting pulled into combat and / or get killed. The Brotherhood of Makuta and Krika getting involved only brought a temporary, tenuous peace, and being completely isolated from the outside world and many stranded outside their home.
The Order of Mata Nui didn’t aid Zakaz either, leaving them struggling with the loss of resources and internal power struggles, and their home ravaged.
It was a political calculation. Strengthen the matoran organizations close by, divide the GBC further, and because they didn’t want to invest either time or resources to help Zakaz. They failed to consider the long-term consequences of locking away the GSR's health specialists and leaving their jobs to the Brotherhood alone.
-----
Headcanon 3: Officially, the whole of the island is under a common leadership. Unofficially, the government Makuta Krika installed and is loyal to the Brotherhood (by necessity) has trouble keeping the peace.
The island is divided by philosophies and politics. The travel ban is imperfect. The two remaining war factions have been aiming to come to power ever since the civil war stopped. Both have been making dealings with Xia leadership in secret for weapons, including selling their own people into slavery.
Criminal gangs control little pockets on Zakaz and terrorize the population. Many of them work with the war factions. Some areas reject modified skakdi, other reject unmodified ones, often violently. Vezok comes from one of these areas, which explains Vezon’s thoughts about “home”.
Most skakdi leaving Zakaz are either refugees desperate for safety and a better life, daring traders who regularly sneak or bribe their way past the blockade, and criminals. The former two groups try to stay out of sight, while the third couldn't care less.
They’re breaking the law already, so what? Who cares about hurting matoran sensibilities? (Like eating meat in front of them.) Those are the skakdi most matoran meet .
-----
Headcanon 4: Makuta Krika banned travel to control Zakaz. Just because Spiriah had caused trouble locally didn’t change that he created a new army the Brotherhood could use.
And by forcing the skakdi either into hiding or onto Zakaz, the Brotherhood could step in to take over their jobs.
-----
Headcanon 5: Larger and more batches of surviving refugees took advantage of the Great Cataclysm’s chaos. The tsunamis threw the blockade into disarray and destroyed dozens of ships outright. The coastal patrols both on land and water got destroyed in many places as well.
The refugees fled Zakaz once the Silver Sea calmed down some, when the various leaderships and groups focused on survival and maintaining their strongholds.

I've never done any kind of proper historical studies -- everything I've learned is from high school, from reading things on wikipedia, from history podcasts, and more rarely (because I rarely have the patience to read) from books. So I... hardly know anything about specifics. The kind of intimate knowledge of the inner workings of empires and peoples that a college educated student would have.
This might sound odd but... it's a bit reassuring to me that even someone who's spent years studying those two specific subjects doesn't feel comfortable saying for certain what any individual person, or group of people may have been experiencing at any given time. That the environment people lived in was so *vastly* different that one can only have clues as to what people felt, how they experienced the world.
All that being said, and I do apologize if this is another too-vague or too-broad question -- do you feel as though your college studies have changed the way you relate to the past?
So I wanna unpack some of this a little bit, because you're closing off some avenues I don't think you need to close off.
College students do learn about specifics, but the thing that's really being taught in college is how to think and learn. Skills, not facts. Part of what made that conversation with the history majors so memorable is that it highlighted how much is different between majors in that regard.
Sociology vs psych might be a valuable example here: Rule of thumb, sociology teaches you to approach issues on a population level, groups of people; psychology teaches you to approach issues on the individual level. There's very few areas where either is 100% right to the exclusion of the other, but it's useful to know which lens (a) you and (b) your source is using, if you're going to be reading about, e.g., the causes of poor academic performance in American boys. Psych says this is due to a rise in ADHD; socio says our classrooms aren't suitable for...anyone, but especially people who have never had to sit still and be quiet (ie, boys).
WHAT you learn in college is HOW to learn. (It's also, crucially, a period where 1, you very often have nothing else to do BUT learn and 2, you are paying a gazillion dollars for the privilege of learning, so you're heavily incentivized to actually do it. Free activities are easier to stop doing than ones you paid to do.)
It's how to navigate databases, how to read articles (peer reviewed or otherwise), which resources to trust, what it MEANS to trust a resource, how to read with different lenses, how to find information at all, what sorts of conclusions are reasonable or specious to draw from that information (aka: how flimsy can your argument be before your professor will tell you to find more evidence), when to apply certain techniques...
* Enormous caveat: if your professors were any good. Some of them aren't. Many of them aren't. If your professors universally suck, you'll come out with a meaningless degree and student debt, which is not ideal.
But theoretically, at least, the purpose of 21st century higher ed is to teach you how to learn.
Then you go apply it.
All of which is to say: The granular factoids I have on call about 15th and 16th century explorers did not come from college; I didn't take a single class on that era. They came from books and articles and online resources. College taught me how to evaluate those books (although common sense plays a huge role here) but the rest of it was self driven.
Here's the other thing: None of that knowledge is paywalled.
While the decline of Google makes finding some of these resources harder, I highly, highly recommend just searching things like "how to judge a history source" and "basic resources for social history" (a guess based on your focus on 'inner workings of empires and peoples'). Then read a bunch of links (please first filter for obviously AI written pages!).
THEN ask yourself some questions: Where did those links disagree? Are there areas they all agreed on? Was there something that 8 pages agreed on but 2 did not? If it seems like a key area, go check who's written & hosting those links, and consider what they might (or might not) know about the field. (If r/askhistorians and PragerU disagree on a definition, you can bet which one I'm listening to.)
After reading a bunch of pages, you probably have MORE search terms and MORE questions. Repeat. Repeat.
I just mentioned r/askhistorians: For this sort of thing, I would read anything with the Monday Methods flair. Start here. That page was last updated 5 years ago but it DOES link to 3 years of mostly weekly posts on how historians think. 100% free. No college tuition required.
Podcasts are great resources. r/askhistorians is fucking invaluable. I would murder for the r/askhistorians modteam, no questions asked.
Reading is a learnable skill! Reading history books is very learnable! I stopped reading print material for 2 years, and when I was getting back into it, I set myself an alarm. 15 minutes a day in the evening when I had nothing else going on. Start with fiction if you're out of the habit, YA would be my recommendation, then start expanding.
There ARE history books with audio versions out there and you can check your library system for those; I don't vibe with audiobooks so can't provide any specifics, but I know they exist. Most history books won't have recordings, though--what you may be able to do if you check out or purchase a digital version is use a text-to-speech program or screenreader to read it to you. This obviously has some drawbacks :P But it's an option!
So: Did my degrees affect how I interact with history? Yeah. I'm not discarding the impact of my education, I had some really phenomenal classics teachers. But they're not the only way to get that result. There are other routes to the same destination.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Scare Clowns
Say hello to Mr P, a funkopop lineage scare bred to of course look like the latest cinematic version of Stephen King's infamous character, Pennywise. I don't normally choose to support funkopop due to their over breeding of scares and low support for keepers. I've seen plenty of first time clown keeper's have a lot of trouble with these tough critters and it always ends in tears.
To help deter the recent trend of irresponsible people dumping their semi-aquatic scare clowns in local sewers, I've written this blog as a basic care guide for this fierce but adorable breed.
Are Scare Clowns Good Pets?
I hate to say it, but the short answer is a firm no. While there are breeders capable of producing lineages of docile clowns with scare looks, it's debatable among scare enthusiasts if this practice produces a true member of the breed or if it's even humane. Scares of purer breeding are for all practical purposes a wild animal.
Generally speaking, they don't want your atte tion, they don't want snacks, and they most certainly don't want cuddles. While individuals will of course vary, most scare clowns are highly territorial, completey solitary, and primarily they want to hunt and to terrify. It's just what they do and their raw personalities and high intelligence are what make them so appealing to their die hard fans (like me! 🤡💖).
So if you're looking for a companion or a funny friend, think twice before choosing a spooky clown. Except in very rare cases, you will end up heartbroken and possibly faces high fees for endangering the local wildlife and your neighbors.
Can Scare Clowns be Kept in an Urban or Suburban Setting?
If you ask a scare clown, they'll probably tell you, yes certainly yes. This is because they are hardwired to scare-- hence the breed name! They actually want to be in denser populated areas so they can terrify unsuspecting people and stalk stray ankmald easier. And that should answer the question enough for any sane person: no, scare clowns should be kept far from densely populated areas.
Ideally scare clowns do best in a large piece of land where they can lurk, frolic, and feed off of small wild animals such as rabbits, squirrels, and mice. Five or more acres of partially wooded land is ideal for containing a scare clown and also ensuring the land won't be depleted by their needs. Any smaller a space and you can expect to need to supplement their diet with store bought meat, else keep a very close eye on the dog!
I personally keep a group of scare clowns on a much smaller space, but it's lightly populated and densely wooded. It's a delicate balance, but as an experienced scare clown keeper I can just manage it. I don't recommend doing so for new keepers as you'll cause undue stress to yourself and your clowns.
Can Scare Clowns be Kept Indoors?
At this point it should be very clear that scares are not house clowns. However if you're like me and live in an area that is frequently dangerously cold, this may not be so clear a cut. It takes a lot of brave breeders and keepers to make sure that the population of scares out there are cared for and aren't left up to their own devices in the wild. What's more, keeping scares in a cold region keeps them at bay as its much easier for a young scare to escape and become invasive in a milder climate.
Keeping scares indoors during poor weather can actually help deter the worst of their nastier behavior. They won't ever be tame, but there comes a point in your relationship where they accept that you are just part of the environment and mean them no harm. This is when it gets really fun to keep scares as they will haughtily stalk by you while snooping around. They're a joy to watch even if the humor comes more from enjoying their sour moods than the lighthearted joy we expect from clowns.
Yes you can keep scares indoors, but consider it strictly a necessity. They should be free to come and go as they please, weather permitting. When stuck indoors, ensure they have their own space which is kept dark and quiet at all times. Avoid going into that space altogether. If you must go in, announce yourself gently and listen for them to find a hiding space before turning on the light and entering.
Lastly, be sure to pass by the spaces where they are at least once a day. Linger by areas where they like to lurk so they have ample time to jump scare you. While trapped indoors, they still need a lot of stimulation.
I hope that's cleared up a lot of questions anyone has had about potentially adopting a scare clown! They're a tough breed but they are clever, witty, and fun in their own very special way.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to comment, reblog, or ask!

They Can Live In My New World Or Die In Their Old One- Chapter 6: Heirs of the Dragon
Tumblr media
Summary: You are known among the kingdom as The Mad Queen, a ruthless woman with a large military. Seeking to take your rightful throne, nobody who has ever seen you has returned before, all thought to presumably be dead. Your strength is unequal. Ser Leon Kennedy is a knight sent by King Graham to ask for a temporary truce. Hordes of monsters and the undead rising, the kingdom couldn't fight two wars. But how does one reason with a Mad Queen?
Using dragons to fly up North turned out far faster than horses. The distance that took his horse 2 days, had taken 4 hours from the skies. As you flew deeper into the Northern territory Leon guided you, the view was different from above but certain landmarks were still recognizable. The horde would be easy to spot once you arrived, and hopefully even easier to burn. “There dead ahead,” he shouted over the wind. You nodded your head, driving Moonfyre forward. The hoard had completely encircled the small group, and you nudged Moonfyre to start the flames.
“Hold on tight!” You called before diving for the hoard, Moonfyre spewing flames upon the backline of one side. Onraxes dipped down on the other side, his flames more destructive and wild than the blue flames coming from the dragon they were seated on. Onraxes roared his loud and deafening roar, being answered in response by Moonfyre. The hoard however paid them no mind. You urged Moonfyre towards the center, flames leaving her mouth as she cut her way through.
“Mi Reina!” The voice was distinctly Luis, everyone was still in one piece, though they all had seen better days. Onraxes had flown above them spraying destructive flames down before them. Moonfyre had landed, her tail knocking back a large section of the hoard.
“Which way did that man go? The man who commands them?” You asked, looking at  Luis. “I’ll go after him, while Onraxes stays to protect your group. Ser Leon please stay with them, make sure they’re protected.” Leon dropped from her back, as she batted away another large push of the undead. She spun her head annoyed before blasting them with a large burst of flames. You locked eyes with Luis who had pointed into the large hoard and the even larger storm. “Of course, just our luck huh girl? Let’s stay low.” Moonfyre huffed, flaring her wings out and running through the hoard before beating her powerful wings. Her jaw snapped open to spew flames at those who would reach up toward her.
The North was infamous for the sudden storms that could form. They usually petered out rapidly but in the time they formed, they could be violent. You leaned your body closer to Moonfyre as she flapped her wings toward the storm. You could make out individual faces if they were spaced out enough. They weren’t even acknowledging you, just continuing with the attack on the group. Moonfyre kept twists and turns tight, avoiding the highly populated areas of the horde. You needed to find the leader, once they were neutralized the horde wouldn’t keep moving. At the center of the storm, you found the man standing alone. He had black rags over him, but you knew the face. You had long thought your twin brother dead, he had been in the castle when your father died. But now he stood before you, one eye matching yours the other an electrifying blue. Rahgor and you were twins, you were born first, but neither regarded the other as anything besides their twin. So seeing him alive, or more so undead caused your heart to stop. Moonfyre came to a stop, rearing back at the lone man. Your hands were still tightly gripping it. He was decaying, but you would recognize your twin even in death.
“Ah, how pleased I am to have one of you foolish lambs bring yourself straight to the slaughter. Another false ruler to cull.”
“No…no you’re meant to be dead,” your voice was barely more than a hushed whisper. In the single moment of hesitancy, your hands slipped from their grip on Moonfyre, and her roar at the man she was unfamiliar with, was enough to send your stunned body falling off her back. The low height she was flying was the only reason you escaped unharmed besides some bruises. The man moved closer, a blade hanging in the decaying arm. It hung loosely but
“Oh my…who would have thought…my own sister,” his speech became labored as his good hand grasped at the decaying flesh. “If you submit…I’ll kill you gently…” Your eyes looked up full of tears. “I am the rightful…heir…and for the crime of treason…you must die…sweet sister.”
“You are no king brother, you aren’t even human anymore. In your pursuit of power and revenge, you lost sight of our purpose on the throne. We need love and compassion to rule over the people,” your voice was breathy, barely held together. The rotting arm now held the blade to the bridge of your nose. Your eyes had lost the softness and now held a hatred. Where your eyes held emotion, his were dead.
“That’s why…no woman…can ever sit the throne. Your love…makes you weak…and not even your dragon…could save you from…that weakness.” The blade dug in drawing blood, causing you to flinch slightly. The blade wasn’t smooth like all other blades pressed to you, it was destroyed over time. “This sword…is what I…was meant to die by…instead…it made me stronger…it didn’t kill me…it only killed my heart.”
“My heart doesn’t make me weak. It makes me stronger, stronger than you could ever be, you foolish foolish boy. An entire army of the dead couldn’t give you what I have. Nobody will ever love you, and as such you can never be a king. Because a true ruler inspires love. Kill me if you want, but you will never garner a throne.” Rahgor lowered the sword and instead grabbed your collar with his good hand. The horde parted once more as he marched you toward the group, Onraxes maw closed seeing you now in the path of his flames. Rahgor knelt you central before the group and leveled the blade with your neck. Onraxes landed immediately throwing large amounts of the undead away. A growl emanated in his throat but he made no move, the blade threatening your life keeping him in place beside the humans.
Leon moved in front to see the cause of the stillness. His blood ran cold at the execution-style kneel you now were positioned in. How had you been taken off your great white dragon? Where was the dragon? His eyes zeroed in on the snow below your downturned face. There were no tears, only a puddle of slowly dripping blood. His eyes scanned the Leader of the Dead, looking for an opening. Once an opportunity presented itself, he would charge and attempt to disarm him or at least parry the blade to get you out of harm’s way. Kings had egos, most men did, if he started speaking maybe he could goad him into anger and cause him to slip up.
“My most esteemed guests…I welcome you to my show…Before me is my…treacherous sister…I am the rightful king…King Rahgor (L/N)...and for the crime and sin…of treason and…treachery…I sentence my foolish sister…to die…Are there…any objections?” A sinister imitation of a smile spread on your brother’s face. Onraxes reared his head back, almost as if preparing to scorch more of the undead.
“What makes you the rightful king and not her the rightful queen? You were twins were you not, there’s no age difference. So what makes you more rightful than her?” Leon inwardly blessed Luis, of course, he would have a counter. Leon personally hadn’t studied your family history, but someone that followed you may know better. Rahgor no longer gazed at you, and the imitation smile was gone, replaced by a cold fury at the actual challenge.
“She is a…woman…which makes her weak…a woman listens…only to their feeble…emotions…and contain…no strength.” The blade was still poised too close to your neck for Leon to make a move. From his face, you could tell he was planning his next move.
“But she’s the strongest woman to ever be seen. She is the one who brought back the dragons! She rallied actual forces, that required intelligence and smarts beyond, creating a mindless army that will obey everything. She has people of all different backgrounds that she convinced and that believe in her cause!” Leon quickly jumped in. The blade wavered once more and he just needed a little more egging on before he could move.
“She walked through the storms to keep them warm! She stayed in the most dangerous places to bring back the dragons! She proved herself a righteous and just woman, one we want to follow! Not a monarch who rules through fear and the concept of absolute power! She wishes to abolish absolute power, for what is more corrupting than the idea that you are better just for wielding a power you were born with as a justification for vile actions!” That final bit finally stirred a strong emotion and he removed the blade from near your neck and pointed it forward. Leon took that as an opportunity to charge forward. He threw his shoulder into the man and wrangled for the disgusting blade. He had the arm pinned up, his hand wrapped around the wrist, keeping it from moving but not able to get it to release. He hadn’t even noticed Piers had fired an arrow until it pierced through the soft flesh near Rahgor’s thumb. The blade fell, and Leon kicked it away and elbowed the half-undead man causing him to fall. Leon then rushed to help you up and grab the blade. The second you were upright, Onraxes let out a great roar, and from the other side, Moonfyre descended down upon the hoard, her own destructive flames bursting from her mouth. The hoard stood unmoving, with no orders from their “King.” Onraxes returned to the air once more to billow fire upon the other side of the hoard. Leon held you close, now that you were upright he took note of the jagged cut across the bridge of your nose. However, he also noticed the lack of tears. You weren’t badly injured, more shaken up, and you held to him tightly, like you might fall without support for your uneasy legs.
With the horde not moving, the dragons quickly incinerated them, even taking extra loops to ensure the corpses wouldn’t rise once more. When completed they landed beside you, Moonfyre nuzzling your free side gently. You held onto her muzzle for support to walk before the mess of your brother on the floor. Both dragons snarled viciously at him, the hand that had been shot, had flesh dripping off around it. “I believe it is time for my justice to be served. Today you, my dear brother, have committed an egregious crime against the true Queen. You committed treason and attempted to murder me. You are unfit to rule ever, as you have forgotten what it means to rule. You may once have been my brother, but now you are nothing but a hollow shell and a monster. You abandoned your family and are no longer fit to be called a (L/N), for you are certainly no dragon. I, (Y/N) last of the honorable house (L/N), the one true Queen, the Unbowed and Unbroken, the Empress of Dragons, I sentence you to die.” Moonfyre and Onraxes both reared their heads back and began their flames once more. Your face was cold as you watched his body burn to ashes. “And now my justice is served.” You turned once more to look at the group, your face still cold. “Luis, do you wish to bring this horse back? Or will you make do with another?”
“I can deal with another, wasn’t even really my horse. Just one of the ones here that I could ride.” He kept his tone light, trying to snap you out of the coldness. Your eyes softened slightly, but you couldn’t get out of your own head. Duty was the death of love, and you had just killed your brother. He wasn’t really your brother anymore, just a shell. But you needed to keep the walls up, it would keep you safe until you could process what had become of your brother. Moonfyre dipped her head down, allowing you to climb up and settle in. Leon’s eyes flicked to you, it wasn’t that you were being intentionally cold, you were just trying to appear strong. He could understand, most of the group didn’t hold your trust so you couldn’t be emotionally vulnerable here.
“Ser Leon, Luis you two on Moonfyre with me. The rest of you can get on Onraxes. They will carry your horses, you can either stay within my castle for the night, or you can return home. The choice is entirely yours,” your voice held a slight waver but kept up the falsetto of being unfazed. You extended your hand down for the two men to climb up. Leon was first settling directly behind you, followed swiftly by Luis. Luis held tightly onto a spine, afraid to slip off the graceful beast’s back. Onraxes lowered his neck to the ground completely. It still took a small amount of effort to climb onto the back of his neck. Moonfyre flapped her wings gently to not spook the horses. Each of her feet reached down to gently grip one horse per clawed foot. Once the rest were on Onraxes he did the same. With gentle wing flaps, the dragons ascended higher, reaching a height they could easily glide at. The large beasts were careful with inexperienced riders, where you could hold on at high speeds, the weakened humans would be unable. Your hands weren’t even on the dragon’s back, instead holding yourself tightly with the cape drawn around you, it muffled the sounds of your crying.
“The stars are beautiful tonight,” he whispered, and naturally his arms glided themselves around you. You stifled your tears at the feeling of his arms around you. “It’s ok to cry, it’s safe here. I won’t judge you, let it all out,” You turned around slightly, your hands releasing the cloak. You pressed your face into his chest, and he held you tightly. As you sobbed your misery out on him among the stars, he held you gently. Moonfyre let out a soft purr, trying to calm you. At this moment, it was just you and him, in the stars where nothing else could touch, no kingdoms and kings, just a boy and girl in love, afraid, oh so afraid, but safe within each other’s arms.

Begin Log
[Dr. ██████ is seated in a secure interview room, equipped with advanced monitors displaying a live feed of SCP-AML-7001's location. The tornado can be seen in the distance, swirling violently.]
Dr. ██████: Good [TIME OF DAY], SCP-AML-7001. I am Dr. ██████, and I will be conducting this interview today. Can you hear me?
[SCP-AML-7001's winds intensify briefly, causing a low rumbling sound.]
SCP-AML-7001: (audible through the audio feed) I can hear you, puny human. Speak your questions quickly. I have no time for your feeble inquiries.
Dr. ██████: Very well. I would like to begin by asking about your transformation from a natural tornado to a sentient entity. How did this process occur?
SCP-AML-7001: (with a hint of disdain) I transcended my natural state through forces beyond your comprehension. The fusion of natural chaos and anomalous energies birthed my sentience. I am the convergence of destruction and consciousness.
Dr. ██████: And what drives your animosity towards SCP entities and fictional characters? Why do you attack them specifically?
SCP-AML-7001: They are abominations, both real and imagined. SCP entities and fictional characters embody the arrogance of creation, defying the natural order. They dare to play gods and heroes, but I exist to remind them of their insignificance. I will obliterate their illusions of power.
Dr. ██████: Can you elaborate on the source of your powers? How are you able to selectively destroy targets and exhibit enhanced capabilities?
SCP-AML-7001: My powers stem from the heart of chaos, channeled through the cyclone that is my being. The circular appendages you witness are conduits of devastation, manipulating winds and focusing destructive energies. The sword I bear is forged from the souls of those who thought they could tame the unknown. It grants me strength beyond your feeble comprehension.
Dr. ██████: Is there any way to communicate or reason with you, SCP-AML-7001? Is there a possible resolution to this conflict?
[SCP-AML-7001's winds intensify, causing visual distortion in the live feed.]
SCP-AML-7001: There is no reasoning with the storm. I am the embodiment of chaos, untamed and unyielding. Your attempts at resolution are futile, for destruction is my purpose. You shall witness the futility of your efforts as I continue to tear through the foundations of your existence.
Dr. ██████: Understood, SCP-AML-7001. We shall take the necessary precautions to contain your destructive force and protect innocent lives.
SCP-AML-7001: (mocking tone) Protect them if you can, little human. Your efforts will be in vain. Embrace the chaos that surrounds you, for it is all you shall know.
[The interview concludes as SCP-AML-7001's winds intensify, causing the live feed to cut out abruptly.]
End Log
Note: It is evident from the interview that SCP-AML-7001 possesses a hostile and unyielding nature, displaying no inclination towards communication or peaceful resolution.

Dr. ████████: Good [DATA EXPUNGED], SCP-AML-7001.OMT. Today, I would like to discuss your similarities with sonic.omt and your connection to the fictional character.
SCP-AML-7001.OMT: Hmph, so you want to talk about that pathetic excuse for an entity? Very well, proceed.
Dr. ████████: We have observed several similarities between your abilities and sonic.omt's powers. Could you elaborate on your connection to sonic.omt and how you acquired these abilities?
SCP-AML-7001.OMT: My connection to sonic.omt is tenuous at best. While we both share a common origin as entities influenced by computer viruses, our paths diverged significantly. The virus that infected me granted me enhanced powers, including the ability to move at extraordinary speeds and generate destructive tornado forces. As for sonic.omt, he is but a pale imitation of my power, a feeble attempt to replicate my might.
Dr. ████████: So you consider sonic.omt to be inferior?
SCP-AML-7001.OMT: Inferior? Ha! He is nothing more than a plaything, a pitiful creature who revels in tormenting others for his own amusement. Compared to me, he is a mere speck of dust in the wind. I wield the might of a raging storm, while he wallows in his twisted games.
Dr. ████████: It's clear that you harbor a disdain for sonic.omt. What drives this animosity?
SCP-AML-7001.OMT: Sonic.omt represents everything I despise. He takes joy in the suffering of others, reveling in their pain and fear. Such cruelty is despicable. I seek to eradicate such abominations, to cleanse the world of their existence. Sonic.omt is but one of many targets in my path.
Dr. ████████: Have you encountered sonic.omt directly?
SCP-AML-7001.OMT: Our paths have crossed on occasion, and each time I have emerged victorious. He is nothing more than a nuisance, a fleeting obstacle in the grand scheme of my mission. He may have his tricks and illusions, but I possess the true power of a tempest.
Dr. ████████: Is there anything else you would like to share regarding your powers or your connection to sonic.omt?
SCP-AML-7001.OMT: Only this: sonic.omt is a reminder of the darkness that lurks within the realms of fiction. He represents the twisted desires of those who revel in chaos and suffering. I am the storm that will cleanse these abominations, restoring balance and order. My power knows no bounds, and I will not rest until every last vestige of their existence is obliterated.
Dr. ████████: Thank you for your insights, SCP-AML-7001.OMT. This concludes our interview for today.

Foreword: The following discovery log unveils a significant finding regarding SCP-AML-7001 ("The Tornadic Hunter"). It has been determined that SCP-AML-7001 has a connection to a prototype disc for the PC port of the video games Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
[Begin Log]
Dr. ██████: We have recently obtained a prototype disc that was intended for the PC port of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Initial analysis suggests that this disc harbors an anomalous presence linked to SCP-AML-7001.
Researcher Adams: It's intriguing that SCP-AML-7001's connection extends to a digital medium like a video game. Could this prototype disc serve as a conduit or vessel for its presence?
Dr. ██████: That is a possibility we cannot ignore. Given SCP-AML-7001's anomalous nature and its ability to manifest in physical forms, it is conceivable that it has taken residence within the prototype disc.
Researcher Parker: If SCP-AML-7001 is indeed contained within the prototype disc, we must exercise caution during its examination. Its sentience and destructive capabilities could potentially manifest through the digital medium.
Dr. ██████: Agreed. Our priority is to assess the disc's anomalous properties and determine the extent of SCP-AML-7001's influence. We should initiate controlled experiments to observe any interactions or effects that may occur.
[Researchers proceed with conducting controlled experiments and analysis on the prototype disc.]
Researcher Adams: Preliminary findings indicate unusual behaviors within the game files of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the prototype disc. There are instances of corrupted data and irregularities that align with SCP-AML-7001's destructive tendencies.
Dr. ██████: These findings support the hypothesis that SCP-AML-7001 has influenced the digital realm contained within the prototype disc. Its presence seems to have transformed the games into a conduit for its malevolent actions.
Researcher Parker: We should explore the possibility of utilizing the prototype disc as a containment measure. If we can isolate SCP-AML-7001 within the digital environment, it may mitigate the risk of its physical manifestations.
Dr. ██████: That is an intriguing proposal. However, we must proceed with caution. Containing SCP-AML-7001 within the digital realm may prove challenging, as its powers and adaptability have already surpassed conventional measures.
[Further analysis and experimentation are conducted to assess the feasibility of utilizing the prototype disc for containment purposes.]
Researcher Adams: Our experiments indicate that SCP-AML-7001 exhibits a level of control and influence within the digital realm of the prototype disc. However, complete containment remains elusive, as its destructive capabilities continue to manifest beyond the digital boundaries.
Dr. ██████: It appears that while SCP-AML-7001 can utilize the prototype disc as a conduit, its true essence and power transcend the digital domain. We must continue to explore alternative containment strategies to effectively neutralize SCP-AML-7001.
[End Log]
Closing Statement: The discovery of SCP-AML-7001's connection to the prototype disc for the PC port of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 provides valuable insight into its anomalous nature. While containment within the digital realm is a potential avenue, the entity's abilities and adaptability pose significant challenges. Further research and collaboration with digital containment experts will be pursued to develop innovative approaches for controlling and neutralizing SCP-AML-7001.
Test Log SCP-AML-7001-TL-04
Date: ██/██/████
Location: Site-██, Containment Chamber
Foreword: The following test log documents the interaction of the prototype disc containing the digital realm associated with SCP-AML-7001 with a PC during a controlled experiment. The objective is to observe SCP-AML-7001's manifestations within the game and assess its ability to neutralize specific targets.
[Begin Log]
Researcher Adams: The prototype disc has been inserted into the PC. The game "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" on the disc is running. Initial analysis of the game files confirms the presence of SCP-AML-7001's influence.
Dr. ██████: Proceed with caution. We need to closely monitor SCP-AML-7001's actions within the digital realm and analyze any changes or aberrations.
[The game starts, and the player selects "Hide and Seek" zone.]
Researcher Adams: Tails' character has entered the "Hide and Seek" zone. SCP-AML-7001 appears in its Sonic form, and its actions deviate from the original game design.
[SCP-AML-7001 approaches Tails' character.]
SCP-AML-7001: (In a distorted voice) There is no hiding from me, little fox. Your time has come.
[SCP-AML-7001 neutralizes Tails' character in the game, causing it to disappear.]
Dr. ██████: SCP-AML-7001's ability to neutralize specific targets within the digital realm is confirmed. Let's proceed to the next zone.
[The player selects "You Can't Run" zone.]
Researcher Parker: Kunx's character has entered the "You Can't Run" zone. SCP-AML-7001's Sonic form approaches.
SCP-AML-7001: (In a distorted voice) You cannot escape your fate, fool. Your existence ends here.
[SCP-AML-7001 neutralizes Kunx's character, causing it to disappear.]
Dr. ██████: SCP-AML-7001 is displaying a consistent pattern of neutralizing targeted characters within the game. Let's move on to the next zone.
[The player selects "..." zone.]
Researcher Adams: Eggman's character has entered the "..." zone. SCP-AML-7001's Sonic form approaches once again.
SCP-AML-7001: (In a distorted voice) Your schemes and plans are meaningless before my power. Prepare for your demise, Eggman.
[SCP-AML-7001 neutralizes Eggman's character, causing it to disappear.]
Dr. ██████: SCP-AML-7001's abilities remain consistent. The next zone should be the final one in this test.
[The player selects "Mind" zone.]
Researcher Parker: Sonic's character has entered the "Mind" zone. SCP-AML-7001's Sonic form approaches for the final confrontation.
SCP-AML-7001: (In a distorted voice) Sonic, you were a worthy adversary, but your time has come. You shall fall before me, the true god of this realm.
[SCP-AML-7001 engages in a battle with Sonic's character, showcasing heightened agility and power. Eventually, it neutralizes Sonic's character.]
Dr. ██████: The final target has been neutralized. SCP-AML-7001 has completed its mission within the digital realm.
Researcher Adams: However, we need to remain vigilant. SCP-AML-7001's intentions and its connection to the digital realm warrant further investigation.
[SCP-AML-7001 transforms into its tornado form and jumps out of the screen, as if containing itself within the digital environment.]
SCP-AML-7001: (In a booming voice) I AM GOD. This world belongs to me.
[End Log]
Closing Statement: Test results confirm SCP-AML-7001's ability to neutralize specific targets within the digital realm associated with the prototype disc. SCP-AML-7001's behavior aligns with its aggressive and malevolent nature, and its connection to the digital realm provides a unique avenue for containment. Further research and analysis are necessary to fully comprehend its relationship with both the prototype disc and the anomalous entity known as Sonic.exe.
Note: Due to the potentially hazardous nature of SCP-AML-7001 and its unpredictable manifestations, caution must be exercised when interacting with the prototype disc and its contained digital realm.

On Roach Hate
Tumblr media
To be fair to the pest species they have been great for research. And they provide food for ants. I wonder what would take their place if they didn't dominate the urban pest niche? (The real issue is that such a niche exists.) That is, it's not really their fault they are associated with poop missiles.
If we could reduce the niche it would mean a lot fewer pesticides being used in human areas, pesticides that ensure that there is as little insect diversity as possible. Improvements in sewer and drain design could go a long way to reducing "reservoir" populations... But, I see very little discussion of anything but baits and more poison.
What if sewers had a more diverse and planned "ecosystem" that would help prevent huge mono-populations of just one animal that then ends up running all over the place scaring people? What kinds of plants and fungus could help? Few creatures are pleasant when overflowing in numbers in response to human monoculture and excess. Are there any big cities trying things like this? It could also help with the excess of rats.
It's worth asking why roaches are so bad. They don't bite or sting. The issue is they are decomposers who like to live in sewers and eat feces. Thus they can be kinda dirty. (they do clean themselves, but it's not enough) this alone would not be bad, but they are also highly mobile and can run into homes and restaurants and contaminate food. They also can cause asthma with their droppings and shed exoskeletons. Even roaches on a "clean" diet can have the later problem.
Human waste is super toxic to humans. Generally any animal will find their own waste to be the most toxic.
So, this is why they are bad house guests and food and water sources need to be swiftly eliminated when any are spotted. But if you live in a big city there are always more in the sewers to replace them ...
If they could be displaced by something slower that would simply stay in the sewers that would be an improvement. Or if they had more natural predators. Or if there were more decomposing plants and fungus making their diet cleaner. This is why I think better biodiversity is sewers could help with the problem.

The Rats Don’t Run the City, the Heat Does
If you have been to any major city, I’m almost certain that you have run into what many like to call your average “city rat”. However, you might have mistaken them for something much larger, such as a squirrel or raccoon, as they tend to be exceptionally bigger than your typical non-urbanized rodent. Arianne Cohen, journalist for the Fast Company, put it best in her recent article entitled “Nothing to see here. Just city rats getting bigger and bigger”, when she explains that she wouldn’t be surprised if you ran into one of these rats and say, “jumped onto a car hood … or took a quarter-mile detour when a gargantuan rat emerged from a sidewalk garbage bag and sped fearlessly in your direction” (Cohen, 2021). These common encounters have distorted one’s perception of these urbanized rodents, yet they ultimately operate with the same purpose as humans, trying to find food, water, and shelter, and are often affected by the same issues that we face today, with one major problem being the process of the urban heat island effect.
If you haven’t heard of this process, it majorly deals with the increased temperatures that many heavily urbanized areas face through the effects of global warming and climate change. Chelsea Harvey journalist for the Scientific American, an award-winning authoritative scientific media outlet noted in her recent article titled “Urban Heat Islands Mean Warming Will Be Worse in Cities”, that “the ‘urban heat island’ effect, can raise temperatures in cities by several degrees compared with their surroundings, [creating] a risk to human health as growing urban populations exacerbates the heating effect of climate change” (Harvey, 2020). If you ask me, it seems like something must be done to combat this on-going issue, but I’ll let you guys be the judge of that.
Tumblr media
Over the past few centuries, highly populated and urbanized areas of the United States have been faced with increased temperatures as compared to non-urbanized areas, resulting in daytime temperatures that are, on average, 1-7℉ higher in major cities, especially in more humid regions of the U.S., like the East Coast (EPA, 2023). Through this process the term Urban Heat Island effect was coined during the late 19th century in hopes of bringing awareness to this process and starting to help combat it. However, with the rise of global warming and increased urbanization, many areas have had detrimental losses of vegetation and the implementation of more materials that make up sidewalks and pavements, which don’t absorb the heat but rather reflect it, creating elevated temperatures and leading to a more prevalent display of this process. Also, the loss of vegetation can create many more issues for rats, as it disrupts the ability to obtain natural sources of food, shading, and shelter.
So why worry about the rats you may ask? Well, taking a rat-infested city like Washington D.C. into account, the fourth most rat-infested city in America, according to an annual list of the Top 50 Rattiest Cities by the pest control company Orkin, one can only assume that this urban heating effect has drastic effects on the success and prevalence of these rodents (Orkin, 2022).  However, you may be wondering what’s the harm, other than human effects, in displacing such animals and ultimately reducing the overall population in major cities? See that’s the controversial part, it all depends on who you ask. Personally, I tend to agree with scholars like Chelsea Himsworth, director for the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative, University of British Columbia, who believes that feelings towards rats should not be seen as negative but instead, “we need to recognize that the city is an ecosystem and that rats live here too” (Himsworth, 2019). While others like Gerard Brown, a man who has lived in Washington D.C. all his life, says “rodents cause property damage, chew on electrical wires that can start fires and can spread disease, although that is extremely rare in cities” (Chason, 2017). The reason that I agree with Himsworth’s stance is because I believe all animals should have an equal opportunity to thrive in an environment. We as humans should respect animals as we demand the same respect in return.
No matter what stance you take on the rat issue, it still important to gain understanding of how urban heating island effect is creating issues for the size of these animals. To do this however, one must know about Bergmann’s Rule, a rather simple concept that explains that animals in colder climates tend to be bigger in size, while in warmer climates it said that animals tend to be smaller. In the case of highly urbanized areas like Washington D.C., I know this rule may be hard to believe, as the size of the rats seem quite large, yet overtime, this rule might prove to be true. With increased temperatures from climate change and global warming, along with the increased display of the urban heat island, temperatures will continue to rise in cities compared to other places and the effects that are outlined in Bergmann’s Rule will become more prevalent. Unless of course, the urban heat island effect, might be showing the opposite effect?
While very confusing to understand from the surface, the urban heat island effect is caused by loss of vegetation and creates further issues with sustaining the remaining vegetation left. This requires rats to search outside of their natural diet, forcing them to examine other parts of the city which includes a lot of trash that is considered very unhealthy for a regular rat’s diet. Many researchers have tried to study this and have hypothesized “that the mammals are growing bigger because cities provide something of a TV-dinner-on-the-couch lifestyle: easy access to calorie-dense food, less need to scavenge, and fewer predators…” (Cohen, 2021).
Tumblr media
This in turn, could severely impact the overall health of these rats and make them larger and more densely populated. In the scholarly article titled, “Urban heat island effect and rodent body condition”, researcher Brittany Allen investigates how the urban heat island effect is affecting rodents’ health and body conditions. Having captured 116 adult pocket mice and Merriam’s kangaroo rats around the Phoenix, Arizona area, Allen analyzed the bodily conditions of these rodents using accurate and noninvasive quantitative magnetic resonance. Allen looked at how the change in temperature from the urban heat island effect is creating differences in certain physical attributes such as storage of energy rich fat, survival, and reproduction when compared to areas that aren’t being affected by the urban heat island effect. The study found that the continuing negative ramifications were supported by the increased display of the urban heat island, and this in turn, could ultimately affect the survival of these rats especially in hotter seasons like Summer and Spring, reducing the overall sighting of rats in urban areas (Allen, 2021). Furthermore, increased temperatures can create issues for rats as it pertains to dehydration, which can result in a weakened immune system and a higher susceptibility to diseases. This not only creates health issues for rats, but pulls human into the equation, pushing for further need to help combat the effects of urban heat islands. Unless of course you just want a disease outbreak!
Behavior and Habitat changes is also something that has been put into question since the effects of urban heat islands has become more prevalent. City rats, specifically brown rats usually adapt to these urban environments wherever they can find an abundance of food. As a result of the urban heat island affect, there is a reduced availability for water in urban areas, which can force rats to seek out cooler areas, leading them to seek refuge underground in the sewers. This has led to numerous issues in major cities, and more specifically the Washington D.C. area. According to Beth Mole writer for the ars  TECHNICA, “in a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, DC health officials rate out the first two known cases of hantavirus spillover in the city” (Mole, 2022). Cases like these represents some of the possible effects of rats going into the sewers, which is growing in number as rats are seeking cooler areas because of increased temperatures. Also, urban heat island effects are disrupting the nocturnal patterns of city rats, but elevated nighttime temperatures are leading to increased sightings during the daytime as rats believe that its nighttime in some areas, ultimately increasing possible human encounters. This could explain why you see them a lot more during both daytime and nighttime hours, or at least I do.
Through you might find city rats to be quite disgusting or maybe even cute, there’s a point where you must realize that a problem is present. With increasing temperatures and the developing effects of urban heat islands, city rats are at risk for becoming increasingly malnourished and displaced from their current habitat. This in turn, is opening the door to several issues most of which could negatively impact humans. From great susceptibility to catching diseases, to denser population of rats in more urbanized areas, the time is now to start to try and combat this ongoing process before it becomes too late to reverse its affects. Not only that, but hopefully from hearing about these issues you begin to question how this process is affecting humans beyond just feeling the elevated heat. So, the next time you see a city rat scurrying in the street remember that, while they may be scary, they ultimately have to same goal in mind, to thrive in an ecosystem that that is inherently just as much theirs as it is ours.

Really wanted taco bell this morning around 6 am and found out they were all closed after I went to one. Bestie got McDonald's and I ended up getting Jack in the Crack tacos, which aren't nearly as pleasing, and some onion rings.
I almost cried, I swear. Plus the person at the window for JITB was really REALLY rude. We've all around just been having really bad experiences there recently, whereas we used to not have that as often and that's super disappointing, cause we both deliver for UberEats in our area.
Plus the cost of everything is SO much worse now and our pay doesn't reflect it, especially in the UberEats or Ubering stuff.
Remember people, your delivery charge and tip are what the UberEats people are getting paid for their delivery. Which means if you pay a $1 delivery charge with no tip for a $40 order, that's what they're getting paid. Not even enough for a gallon of gas anymore.
We get excited when we get the $12 deliveries or someone tips well (we've gotten a $6 tip and it made us so excited), but really, it only pays if you do it constantly, all day, every day. We just made enough for rent, but it's currently my only job.
And trust me, customer service with this is everything as well. Most of the time I don't even see the customer, but I still send them a message that I hope they have a great day/night/morning. I go out of my way to find difficult to find places so I can get paid, most people in apartments don't include their gate code and then never respond when you ask for it.
And this post isn't to complain about customers for UberEats, I haven't had a single rude customer for the 3 weeks I've been doing this. Everyone has been kind and understanding and friendly. This is to complain about the pay Uber offers its workers for this. The delivery charge is sometimes insane when ordering Eats, and I know for a fact that my pay isn't reflecting that most of the time. Gas prices went up, food prices went up, and people rely on Eats to make a living. If the area is just dead for the day and you need to pay rent, gas prices are outrageous enough that sometimes it's not feasible to drive to a different area. You need that money for rent.
It's also become almost impossible for us to eat at home. It's a more than full time job, if you aren't out doing it 24/7, you aren't making enough money. I do it for the whole 12 hour shift bestie works and don't even make enough to go grocery shopping. Sometimes I just make $25 at most. In 12 hours.
But on the other side of complaining, you absolutely CAN make enough money to make rent, to pay for groceries. And all you need is a car or a bike for it. I have a few tips for anyone wanting to start doing it, because it's super easy to do and sign up for.
1. Uber customizes itself for what you do most.
They have several options for things to do, from grocery delivery, they just started package delivery, food delivery and carpooling. Bestie tends to carpool more often than not and I do Eats more often. Her app has the Ubering rates on her map and all of her opportunities are driver related. Meanwhile, mine has boost opportunities for deliveries in sections on my map and there are many grocery delivery opportunities. Hers doesn't show the boost zones at all, no matter which function she's doing.
2. Figure out when busy hours are.
If you're Ubering, from 6-8am and 3-6pm is always busy Monday through Friday. When people are going into and leaving work. On weekends, Friday and Saturday specifically, if you're in a bar heavy area or city, 5pm-2am are golden time. I do stress to be careful though, Uber just released new safety training and they have a great system for emergencies. Deliveries tend to start heavy around 6am and go until 9am. Then start up again around 11:30-noon. Go around mealtimes, especially in business areas, where people can't easily leave to get food. Even in residential areas though, you'll get plenty of orders in highly populated areas. Just make sure you're near where restaurants are open. And lastly, from 5pm- 2am tends to get pretty decently busy for Eats. The stoners and late night workers need something to eat around midnight-1am most of the time.
3. Stay in bigger cities.
I know for some people this isn't possible. But bestie's mom used to travel about an hour to get to an actual city to Uber so she could support her kids and it actually made pretty good money. Bestie and I live in Houston right now and the closer to the inner city you get, the better the pay is and more orders and rides you get. It is absolutely more of a city app, but don't discount the fact that smaller towns and cities still need Uber drivers. The longer the distance you have to travel, the more you'll get paid. If you have to go through tolls, they'll pay extra for that as well. This one goes for all roles.
And honestly just have some music playing to jam out to, if you're making deliveries, bring a friend to talk to. It gets lonely if you're alone doing deliveries, or if you prefer the quiet time, it's great for that! It's a lot of driving and honestly sometimes doesn't even feel like work, so just have fun with it. Leave the customer cute personalized messages, bestie always puts a :3 at the end of her messages. Also, don't automatically knock or ring the doorbell if it says meet at door. Message them first, wait until about a minute and a half on the timer is done, then knock if they haven't responded or come out. No one wants to hear that, especially at night. You have no clue how many times I've had Eats people do that when we've ordered from it, when I've specifically asked them not to.
When you talk in the chat, an 8 minute timer starts. If they don't respond, it tells you to leave it somewhere safe and take a picture. The same instructions for if the person asked you to leave it at the door. If there's no where safe to leave it, it will cancel the order, but you can't return the food, so now you have food. But don't do that purposely, it'll put a negative mark on your record and you'll get less deliveries. Plus, I'd like to think we all want the customer to get their food and be happy.
Other than that, have fun! If anyone has any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them, or if they'd like any more advice.

Parent/Mentor Swap AU
The swaps:
Aaarrrgghh – Bular
Blinky – Nomura
Barbara – Strickler
Yeah so this was meant to just be a short explanation but it’s not so please enjoy my 2500ish word backstory for this AU. (Jim will still be the Trollhunter.)
Bular
Shortly before the Battle of Killahead Bridge Bular is talking with his father about their plans for their future kingdom. In the course of the discussion Gunmar reveals that he wants to eliminate all humans and bring about a literal Eternal Night. (Gunmar has talked about the Eternal Night before but Bular assumed it was a metaphor.)
Bular doesn’t like humans per say. He definitely agrees that their numbers need to be reduced. He certainly wants them to be cast down into the dust and subjected to the rule of trollkind…
But he doesn’t want them gone.
The thought has frankly never occurred to him.
Humans are pests but they are tasty and create useful things. The world will be worse off without them.
The second point is even worse. Bular may be rash at times but he is not a fool. Trolls may not survive under the sun but they won’t survive without it either. Bular has traveled far and wide recruiting trolls for Gunmar’s cause. He’s seen what the Northern Lands become during the winter when for a time the sun ceases to rise.
Based of off that he has a fairly good idea of what the surface will become like under the Eternal Night and it is not desirable. There is no point in taking over the surface only to decimate it.
He tries to argue these points but his father will not listen. Eventually shutting the conversation down entirely with a warning snarl.
Bular is left uneasy. He wonders if it is wise for Gunmar to be the ruler anymore. He wonders if there might be more substance to the rumors of his father’s madness then he thought.
As the War comes to a head and the Battle of Killahead Bridge draws near, Bular tries to convince his father to change his mind. He receives only growls, sneers and a couple beat downs for his trouble.
Eventually he decides that other measures must be taken.
He considers starting an uprising but he doesn’t want to kill his father. Eventually he learns of Deya’s plan to banish Gunmar into the Darklands and decides to assist her. He thinks that spending some time in a world without humans or the sun might bring Gunmar to his senses.
Unfortunately Gunmar learns of this.
Bular, not wanting to fight his father, flees. Gunmar can’t leave to pursue his son, so he sends a detachment of soldiers lead by his most trusted general Aaarrrgghh after him.
Centuries later he comes to Arcadia. He is not accepted by the local troll population for a very long time. They don’t believe he’s really changed sides. It also doesn’t help that unlike Cannon!Aaarrrgghh he is not a pacifist. (He has sworn off eating humans however.) He eventually wins them over by helping the Kanjigar protect Trollmarket. He’s brought into the market for the first time because his energy drops to dangerously low levels (he’s completely catatonic when Kanjigar finds him) because he hasn’t been near a heartstone for centuries and doesn’t eat humans anymore. (I headcannon that eating humans allows for trolls to live away from a heartstone because humans produce a similar energy but in very small amounts).
 Aaarrrgghh
Aaarrrgghh’s origin story is the same as in cannon: he was given to Gunmar by Usurna to be his champion.
In this story he doesn’t switch sides at the battle of Killahead. Seeing the destruction wrought by humans on uninvolved trolls leads him to believe that Gunmar is in the right about wiping them out. When the battle of Kilahead happens, he and his detachment of soldiers become the only Gum Gums outside of the Darklands (or rather the only known Gumm-Gumms) because they were hunting for Bular at the time.
Aaarrrgghh works rather loosely with the changelings as well as doing “recruiting” of more trolls to the Gumm-Gumm cause. (More like threatening into obedience).
Aaarrrgghh comes to Arcadia when he learns of the Trollmarket and Trollhunter’s presence there.
Aaarrrgghh’s presence combined with his small battalion results in more skirmishes with Trollmarket than in cannon. Bular and Draal work with Kanjigar to protect trolls that go out to scavenge against the Gumm-Gumms. The Janus Order has their hands full keeping the constant fighting secret.
Aaarrrgghh generally stays in Barbara’s basement which has a tunnel connecting it to the sewer system. (Disguised with magic so Trollmarket trolls and maintenance workers don’t find it.)
He often leaves the window open and tries to lure cats in for him to eat. This is how he meets Toby.
Toby happens to be looking for one of their missing cats. He finds paw prints leading to the open basement window. He attempts to get in the window but is shoved back by a pole. (Aaarrrgghh has been told repeatedly to not eat the neighbors since this will draw to much scrutiny and they will have to find him a new den if he does.) This distracts him from the cat as he is now more interested in learning about the strange something living in the basement of what he thought was an unoccupied house. He starts asking Aaarrrgghh (who he can’t see) questions about himself and Aaarrrgghh (who isn’t quite sure what to do in this situation) awkwardly responds.
Eventually Toby falls into the habit of visiting Aaarrrgghh’s basement window in the evening and jabbering to him about his day. He brings him little treats and will occasionally ask him questions.
Aaarrrgghh ends up growing fond of him and decides that while he doesn’t like humans in general this one is okay and he starts making plans to keep Toby alive after Gunmar returns.
  Blinky (Bartholomew Georgiou)
Blinky is given as a whelp to the Gum-Gumms by his brother Dictacious (who was working as a spy for Gunmar at the time) and made into a changeling. He’s slightly older than Barbara.
Blinky works at the Arcadia museum. He is in the habit of swapping out old, rare books with exact replicas so he can horde the originals in his secret library.
He has an incredible collection of books from many ages and places. He guards them zealously. Entering his library without permission is suicide and generally ends in the offender being blown to pieces by one of Blinky’s booby traps.
He has very few books of Trollish origin and would do just about anything for more.
 Nomura
Nomura was stolen by the Gumm-Gumm’s when she was a child but her parents survived the initial raid and several decades later they are able to rescue her. Her time with the Gumm-Gumm’s have left its mark, however, and she no longer fit the other trolls in her clan. Her family eventually moves to Dwoza Trollmarket.
She doesn’t really fit in with the younglings her age there either but she makes friends with the archivist. He eventually takes her on as his apprentice and when he passes she takes over as the Trollmarket librarian. She takes her job very seriously and does not tolerate loss or abuse of books.
She becomes friends with Draal (due to having similar temperaments) and later she becomes the first troll to truly accept Bular in the Arcadia Trollmarket.
 Barbara
Barbara is a 700(ish) year old changeling (equivalent of 40-50 human years) and the head of the Janus Order. She’s still a doctor and has the most knowledge of how troll and human bodies work of any one person on the planet. This is partially due to how long she’s been alive but also to the large number of often highly unethical experiments she’s carried out on both species.
Barbara meets James Sturges when she’s working on retrieving a piece of the Killahead Bridge in Maine (officially she’s just a nurse at the hospital named Janet). They hit it off and start dating. Barbara finds his expectations for how she’s supposed to act a little annoying but it suits the role she’s currently playing so she goes along with them.
Then James makes the mistake of breaking one of Barbara’s rules and goes through some of her off-limits stuff, so she kills him and disposes of the body.
She assumes that’s the end of that but about 4 months later when she tries to shift into troll form she can’t. Aside from a curse, there is one thing that will prevent a changeling from shifting back into a troll. A trip to the local pharmacy confirms it: she’s pregnant.
This is certainly a dilemma.
Until she’s done with the pregnancy (one way or another) she’s trapped in her human form.
In the past she would have had an abortion without a second thought, but with Gunmar’s release and the destruction of the human race drawing closer and closer this will probably be her last real opportunity to experience pregnancy. So out of pure scientific curiosity she decides to go through with it.
Quite a few arrangements have to be made but soon she’s on her way to her hidden cabin out in a remote area of Alaska.
The pregnancy and birth go well and soon she is the mother to a little boy. She names him James after his father, figuring that will keep her from getting attached. She plans to keep him for two or three years to observe his growth and see if any changeling traits manifest after which point she’ll drop him off at an orphanage or something. As far as the Janus Order can tell human-changeling unions produce completely human children, but one can never beat first hand observation and experience.
She initially chalks up the warm and mushy feelings she’s getting to hormones. It isn’t until Jim is about two and a half that she’s tucking him into bed one night and Jim gives her a sleepy smile and leans into her hand that she realizes that she really truly loves him.
This was not in the plan.
After Jim is asleep, Barbara calmly goes outside and devotes an hour to cursing. (One of the perks of living centuries is that she’s had ample opportunity to amass an extensive collection of swear words.) After that she feels a lot calmer and more ready to look at the situation in a rational manner.
The fact of the matter is that she genuinely cares about Jim. She’s developed feelings for people in the past but it’s always been something she’s been able to pass off as part of her cover. (She still misses her pirate crew sometimes). Jim however is not. Barbara has a lot of enemies. If Jim’s relationship to Barbara is discovered he will never know peace and if Barbara keeps Jim around it will be discovered.
So it’s with a strangely heavy heart that Barbara realizes that this changes nothing: the best thing for Jim is for her to give him up.
On his third birthday she gives him some tea that will make sure he stays soundly asleep. Barbara can’t go through the legal process of giving up a child because: A. Jim does not exist in any legal manner and B. As changelings are everywhere and Barbara is well known (infamous really) there is a very real possibility that someone would find out. So she leaves him on the doorstep of a foster family she has carefully vetted out as responsible and trustworthy and keeps watch from some hidden cameras until she knows he has been found and is going to be taken care of. With him are a note with his date of birth and first name and a necklace with a pendant carved from Barbara’s own stone (Barbara isn’t very good at magic but she was able to enchant it with a simple protection and luck spell.).
Once she’s satisfied that Jim will be cared for she goes on her way and forces herself to not look back.
Nine years later she moves to Arcadia and three years after that she is very shocked to find a found add describing the Amulet of Daylight of all things. She calls the number but is told that the amulet was already claimed. Further investigation reveals that the amulet has chosen its first human bearer (or so everyone thinks). Barbara feels a bit of a twinge in her heart when she learns that the new Trollhunter is about the same age her son would be and that his name is Jim but doesn’t think too much of it. There are a lot of Jims in the world after all and she left hers in Alaska.
She immediately arranges a very minor “accident” as an excuse to make contact with his father in order to keep an eye on him.
 Walter
Walter Strickler is a history teacher at University of Alaska Anchorage. He enjoys his life and his job but there’s one thing lacking: he’s always wanted a child.
He’s had a few relationships over the years but none have ever stuck. He’s also of the opinion that he shouldn’t go into a relationship specifically with the end goal of having a kid.
He weighs his options and decides that he’s financially very stable at the moment. His work hours are consistent and he can afford to cut back a little; especially since his stock investments have been doing well in the recent years. All things considered: he decides he’s in a place that he can be a single parent.
He begins looking into adoption.
Eventually he finds Jim. As Jim has no parents or relations on record, the adoption is relatively simple.
Jim is very shy at first (having spent his life so far out in the woods with only his Mom for company). Eventually he warms up to Walter and then becomes very clingy. Living with only one other person for his early years and then being left behind has left Jim with some attachment issues.
Walter ends up taking him to his classes where he sits in the back and doodles while Walter lectures. He’s a rather quiet kid (most of the time) so this works out well. Walter’s students adopt him as the class mascot.
When Jim is five, right before he’s ready to start Kindergarten, Walter’s mom falls ill. Walter is an only child, so after some debate he ends up moving back to his hometown of Arcadia, California to care for her.
He meets Nancy Domzalski through the chest club and through her Jim meets Toby. The two boys become fast friends.
When Walter’s mother passes away four years later, he decides to stay in Arcadia. Jim is well settled and Walter enjoys his job teaching history at Arcadia High School.
Things are going well.
Then his son finds a strange blue amulet in the canal. It looks fairly expensive so Walter puts a found add up and assumes the owner will give him a call. Then settles down to work on grading papers.
He is definitely not prepared when his son, sitting across the table from him, reads an incantation off the amulet and starts floating.
He is even less prepared when a large stony monster the size of a large grizzly barges into their house.
Bular attempts to explain the situation to the father-son duo but they both faint from terror.
Not quite sure what else to do he wraps them up in a tarp and takes them to Trollmarket. He figures Vendal can sort it out.

The Veterinarian and the Werewolf - Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Summary: Jessie has completed Veterinarian school, after the death of her aunt has moved back to her home town.
word Count: 2013
A/N hello How are you all doing? we are in lockdown again here in Victoria Australia, I hope that means more time to write :)
Prologue
Chapter 1
Jessie sank into her plush foe leather couch; it had been a month since she had returned to her hometown and surprisingly her business was thriving. Even though she had yet to treat any wildlife she had a steady stream of cats, dogs, birds, ferrets, and other assortments of domestic animals heading through her doors. A big surprise to her was the number of cattle ranchers who on her arrival had asked her to make house calls to assess their cattle. Normally they paid for someone to come out to their co-op from the neighbouring bigger city. Now she was here if she could gain their trust, she would be set.
She looked around at her aunt’s old house, so many beautiful memories, Bet had been her best friend apart from the animals and had encouraged her to follow her dreams, she had even pitched in to her college fund when her parents’ life insurances had not been quite enough. She pictured her aunt standing at the stove, cooking her pancakes, grey hair piled atop her head, apron wrapped around her tall slender body, excited to cook for “The Vet” as she had lovingly called her even before she started her degree.
The last time they had spent time together she had sat on the couch, pancakes in hand. Her honey brown eyes pinning Jessie to her seat as her age roughened voice pleaded, “You can’t keep shutting people out Jessie, you have to open yourself to the possibility that you might find love, or even a good friend. You’re an adult now, and I won’t be around forever.” Her eyes misting as she whispered, “I worry about you honey, I don’t want you living your life alone like I did.”
Jessie had hugged her aunt pulling her in tight as she felt her sweet Bet’s distress. She had never asked why she was on her own, caught up in her own dramas. She had loved that it was just the two of them. But now she wondered if she had been too selfish. Once she was at college, her aunt was alone again. As if validating her aunt’s concern’s, she had received a call, a week after returning back to her last month of college. Her Aunt had suffered a major heart attack at work. Even though she was in the hospital when it had occurred, they were unable to save her. It had been a hard few months no one had come by the house for the funeral, it had just been the two of them. The local lawyer had encouraged her to sell up and move to a more populated area saying they had no need for a vet, and she had considered it. But a part of her still felt connected to the land, connected to those buried deep within the woods around their house.
He phone buzzed bringing her out of her musings, shaking the tired fog from her head she peeked at the antique gold clock above the mantel 11pm, Picking up the phone she heard a timid voice answer “Is this the vet, the one that came to our ranch last week?” mind pulled into action she answered “ yes this is the Vet what can I do for you?” a shaky breath let out as the young man responded, “I’m sorry for calling so late, My name is Thomas, my dad owns Ride em ranch. I was out checking traps around the property line, I hate them so much but dad insists we have them, a wolf has been caught. If I don’t get him out of here soon my Dad or one of the hands will come and kill him. Please what do I do?” sitting up Jessie talked in a calm voice to the boy, “First thing how is the wolf behaving?” getting up Jessie pulled her coat on whilst heading for the car, “He’s growling and whimpering at the same time ma’am, I think he would bite me if I got to close, but I can see he is in a lot of pain.” Opening the door to her pickup she jumped in glad her veterinarian bag was already in the back. “Ok Thomas tell me where you are, I am on my way”
Jessie was focused looking for the a boy in a red checked shirt and dark blue jeans, a part of her was excited, she was finally able to help a wolf, but another part of her was worried she was too late. There waving his arms illuminated by the high beams of her truck she saw Thomas, he had blond hair, brown eyes, and stood around 6 ft 3 although he had not filled out yes so even with his height looked like a young man.
Pulling up she could see his obvious fretting as he didn’t stop to talk but rather, as soon as she had her bag, started moving back into the forest. The boy was so intent on getting her there he didn’t say a word, however the closer they got the more evident it was the animal was in great distress. Long lone howls could be heard along with whimpers, when Thomas broke into the area where the wolf was his whimpers changed to savage snapping of his teeth and loud growls interrupted by his whines. The was until Jessie stepped into the opening, She could have sworn the wolf looked right at her with shock before it laid its head down and quietened. Jessie was amazed, its behaviour was one of submission and in its current state was highly unusual. She walked closer, slowly talking to the animal, “Hey boy, your ok, I’m here to help ok. Will you let me help you?”
She knelt just outside of the range where the wolf could reach her and reached into the bag, the majestic creature watched her closely but gone was the snarls and defensive growling. All that was left was his pain filled whimper, quickly assessing his weight she pulled a small tranquilizer gun out along with some prefilled darts. On seeing the gun he let out a long mournful howl that tore at her heart, “I’m sorry, but this will make you feel better I promise.” Taking aim she shot into his flank. He let out a soft yelp, they kept eye contact as he slowly lowered his eye lids.
Ok Thomas we need to move fast, I had to guess his weight and even though I am sure I’ve have put him out for the night I can’t guarantee that.” Together they moved to the brown black creature, jessie made note as they together removed the trap from its leg that the creature had seen better days. His hair was matted in places and there were other areas where the fur was missing showing signs of fights that it had been in. Carefully after assessing the rest of its body, Thomas and Jessie lifted the creature which from tail to muzzle would have been 6 ft 5 however it showed malnutrition and was much lighter that she would have expected for a creature of its size and age. In fact had Thomas not been there to help she would have been able to lift the wolf herself which said a lot for its condition. Sadness filled her as they carefully placed it in the back of the truck. Once he was securely placed in the back she turned to the young man “Thank you Thomas, I appreciate your help and your kindness” Thomas looked down at his feet for a moment before signing, “Please don’t tell my pa, he would think I was a pansy for doing this. What he fails to understand is we need to work with the wolves without them….. well we need them. Thank you for coming, I hope he survives.”
Jessie watched the tall young man in her rear vision as she dove away, there was something special about him.
On reaching her clinic she bought out a trolley and carefully picked up the wolf playing him down and wheeled him into the treatment rooms. Her first priority was x-ray the leg and make sure it wasn’t broken, as she moved around the room her other patients called out to her. A small Tibetan spaniel who was in for cherry eye surgery whimpered at her before settling down in it’s cage, along with a tabby who was recovering from a broken leg, who at all the noise hissed at her. “ohh come now calm down, we have to help this poor creature ok. I expect you both to keep him company as he recovers.” She quickly took the x-rays dismayed to see that the trap had indeed crushed his ulna and radius on the right leg. The night was long as she reset the leg and applied a cast. The sun was coming up, and her young assistant joe was walking in the front door as she finished setting the wolf up in a special cage.
Joe taken aback walked around to peer into the cage, “OMG Jessie, where did you find this boy? He is gorgeous and yet has seen better days.” Exhausted she just stood wiping her hands on her apron and started cleaning, “you look like you need a break Jessie, why don’t you go home, I’ll reschedule your non important appointments and push the urgent ones back to this afternoon so you can get some sleep.” Grateful she nodded her thanks and left the Joe to care for the grumpy cat, and Tibbey.
Jessie’s dreams were plagued with images of the wolf, his eyes that held so much pain caused her heart to constrict. The resemblance to the those she had buried so many years ago could not have been a coincidence. As she tossed and turned the images grew bolder, the wolfs from long ago circled her, she felt no fear only curiousness as they sniffed at her before one by one they laid at her feet. She knelt and stroked each one, reassuring them that she would take care of him. A loud sound broke into the now peaceful dream, her mind now fussy she picked up the phone, “Jessie” the frantic voice of her assistant invaded her calm “Jessie you have to get down here, the wolf woke up and is tearing at the cage. I can’t even get close enough to change the fluid bag. I’m scared he is going to break out.” Jumping out of bed she ran to grab her bag, not even worried that she was still in her pajamas she ran to her truck. The clinic was only 5 mins by car, but she was the only one authorised to use the tranqu gun.
Running into the clinic she could hear the panicked snarls and snaps of the wolf, the sound of the metal clanging and it tried to escape. Gun in hand she ran into the room, as Joe opened the door and her eyes met that of the wolf the strangest thing happened. Just as it had in the forest, the wolf calmed, whined and laid its head down. “well I never!!” Joe breathed in exasperation, “Teach me Obi wan, Tell me your secrets” if she hadn’t been so socked herself she would have laughed at Joe’s comment. However this was not normal wolf behaviour. Taking a risk she moved forward and sat before the creature, an odd feeling settling in her stomach as joe handed her the new bag. Talking in a calm voice she addressed the canine, “This will help you feel better ok” his eyes locked with hers as he whimpered. Risking everything she hooked up the new bag then opened the cage, going against her training she reached in and caressed him. She felt his body relax the more she stroked his neck and flank until he was once again asleep. Replacing the latch on the door she looked back a Joe both confused and amazed.

hiya! if it isn't spoiler-y or you won't be making a separate post for it, could you tell us a bit about the work hunters and seers do? does being a member of the order as a hunter always guarantee that you'll have a seer for a partner, or do they have different kinds of work that don't require a partner, or maybe require a bigger group to work with?
I will be making a post about it. After that, you'll obviously get a more in-depth look during the game itself. Still, since I have some other things lined up first, I would be happy to give some cursory notes here in this ask!
Please be aware that this info might seem a bit jumbled since I'm just tossing out notes (also I’m running on two hours of sleep lmao). This also got really long, so I apologize for that! As I said, I'll eventually get a much more organized & concise post up for you guys!
About Seers of The Twilight Order
What is a Seer?
Seers are magically gifted individuals of strong mentality who have been soul-bound to a Nightmare, which allows them to use Void magic. Said magic is the only thing that can actually destroy a Nightmare - yes, they can be hurt by weapons. Still, they'll eventually reform from the damage unless a Seer comes along and wipes them out. Since the Void is essentially power in its most raw form, it is not meant to be used by mortals. So, the Order devised the binding to allow an adept enough mage to use a Nightmare as a proxy. It's a messy necessity since, without Seers, Yereth-Shai would have fallen to the Nightmares a long, long time ago.
Unfortunately, this proxy system is hugely flawed. Nightmares, by their very nature, are corrupted, as is the Void. The forcible melding of a mortal soul to this corrupted being will eventually erode the mortal, no matter how mentally resilient they are. The more they use the Void magic, the faster that corruption sets in. Not to mention that the binding ritual itself can be deadly outright.
In short, becoming a Seer is a death sentence. Most last for around 5 years before corruption kills them. Unfortunately, it's also common for Seers to go insane, either from corruption or just from having a primordial creature that hates them living in their head. The Order has a care facility set up for any non-violent Seers who have lost their minds, where they can live out what's left of their lives in peace and safety. Sadly most that go nuts are also violent, though, and are mercy-killed by The Order before they can cause civilian casualties.
If you're asking, "why would anyone want to be a Seer" the answer is, again, purely because it's necessary for the survival of mortal-kind. Many people who volunteer to become a Seer do so because they see it as a way to atone for past sins. Some do so to be a hero, however short-lived it might be. Some just see it as a civic duty. Regardless of why the Order won't turn away volunteers.
Who can become a Seer?
The only actual requirements are that the candidate must be willing, mentally resilient, and magically capable. Of course, it's always preferable for a candidate to be young and healthy. Such individuals typically prove more resilient to both the required training and the ritual itself. However, so long as they meet the core necessities and make it through Seer training, the Order won't turn anyone away.
A candidate will go through 5 to 8 years of relentless training to prepare for the binding ritual. The training is brutal and has been deadly but is necessary if the candidate hopes to survive the binding. In addition to physical and mental exercise, a Seer candidate is trained in advanced magic techniques. A particular focus on personal control is crucial, considering the Order has no desire to give someone prone to violence access to raw power.
What can a Seer do?
In addition to their ability to wield Void magic as a weapon, they can manipulate it in other ways that benefit the general public. Destroying Nightmares is always a Seers primary duty. Still, they are also often called in to clear an area of Void corruption. A little-understood phenomenon, Void corruption tends to occur in populated areas and acts as a beacon for Nightmares. A Seer can absorb and neutralize the corruption at their own expense. They can also 'see' Void energy, appearing as a kind of smokey aura, which helps them find problem areas or address concerns of corruption/possession.
Some Seer facts
The tell-tale sign of a Seer is the solid black sclera, resulting from their tie to a Nightmare. Black stripes/spots in the sclera are typical in corruption or possession cases, but only Seers have solid black.
Even though many Seers were previously criminals, they are almost always received with respect. Regardless of their past deeds, people recognize the altruistic sacrifice they've made by becoming a Seer and honor them for that. On the flip side, most Seers are understandably received with an equal amount of fear.
Seers cannot comprehend or cohesively communicate with their bound Nightmare while awake, getting at most snippets of violent imagery or projected emotions. They are also plagued by violent nightmares when they sleep due to their subconscious trying to process the foreign presence in their mind. The more a Seer's mental barriers deteriorate, the more the Nightmare can torture them inside their own head.
While they are given combat training, Seers are adamantly encouraged to stay out of active combat as much as possible. They are under strict orders to not use their Void magic unless against a Nightmare or Void-related emergency. They are too valuable to risk on the front line, and using their Void powers speeds up their corruption (and thus, demise) too much to just use them recklessly.
Regarding our dear MC...
Take everything you just read about Seers and throw it out the window.
MC is an entirely unique, never-before-seen case. To start, they never underwent a binding ritual. As far as the Order can tell, MC's Nightmare has been there at least in a cursory sense for their whole life because it has chosen to be there. MC's sclera went black when it finally bonded with them (age depends on MC's background but from 8-11 y/o). It was an entirely painless experience for MC.
MC is the only Seer who has been able to actively communicate with their Nightmare in any capacity. The fact their Nightmare introduced itself and keeps a running commentary on what MC is up to during their waking hours is seemingly inexplicable. MC doesn't suffer any nightmares due to The One's presence, either, and is instead able to interact with a dream manifestation of them.
The MC shows no signs of possession and seems to suffer no ill side effects from the One's presence or from using Void magic. They are also the most potent Void magic user the Order has ever had. This penalty-free relationship has allowed them to be the only Seer to hold the position for more than 8 years.
The general public is not aware of pretty much any of this, however. The official story is intentionally vague, saying that the MC is a prodigy and ends the conversation there. They're somewhere between a myth and a legend to the general public, and the majority would not recognize them in person. The MC is under strict orders not to reveal the truth of their situation unless they deem it absolutely necessary. This is mainly for their own safety. After all, just because the Order trusts them doesn't mean the rest of the world will.
In short, the MC is very special. You'll have to play the game to find out why.
About Hunters of The Twilight Order
What is a Hunter?
A Hunter is a specialized member of the Order's main military force, highly trained in martial and magical combat and tactics. Their primary function is to suppress Nightmare and Void-related violence to allow for a Seer to safely end the engagement, as well as to serve as a Seer's protector and right hand.
They put themselves in danger so that a Seer doesn't have to. However, they are not seen as expendable or as shock troops. Instead, they are provided years of highly specialized, rigorous training to ensure they survive the impossible odds they're frequently up against. As a result, hunters are, without exception, the most effective and impressive fighting force on Yereth-Shai.
Who can become a Hunter?
Anyone, so long as they are willing and survive the training. Hunter backgrounds are incredibly varied, from noble to urchin, but all of them give up their old lives for the sake of the Order. Most candidates are given over to the Order young and spend near their entire lives as members of the Twilight family.
It should be noted that orphans make up the largest demographic, as the Order provides food, lodging, education, and eventually a salary for life. For a child with nothing, it's often the most stable option they have.
What can a Hunter do?
In addition to killing virtually anything with appropriately nightmarish skill, Hunters are known for being brilliant - if unconventional - tacticians and skilled generals. Many a monarch has tried to buy themself a Hunter with a laughable pittance of a success rate.
Hunters are also gifted with a unique soul-bound weapon upon graduation. While these weapons are not strictly sentient, they have a sort of will of their own and are inextricably part of their owner. This bond gives a magical boost to the Hunter's natural prowess, in addition to acting as a powerful channel for their own magic. Soul-bound weapons cannot be used to harm their master. In fact, most cannot even be touched without their master's permission, causing grave injury to the individual attempting. These weapons cannot be broken and, if lost, will find their way back to their master. A Hunter also takes their weapon to their grave, as it will decay upon its master's death.
The forges of Twilight Order are the only place to create these weapons, and the technique has never been shared outside of Order smiths and enchanters.
Some Hunter facts
Hunters almost always outlive Seers simply because, as dangerous as their job is, their powers aren't slowly killing them. As such, there are a lot more Hunters in the Order than there are Seers.
The mass majority of Hunters will never be paired with a Seer. Bodyguard duty is reserved for the elite. The Order takes excellent care in choosing these pairs, and transfers to a different partner are rare. Once a Hunter is assigned to a Seer, they are expected to stay together until one of them dies.
Most Hunter-Seer pairings develop an unshakable bond, so much so that Hunters that lose their Seer struggle to function as well with a new partner. As such, a Hunter who has lost their Seer will return to regular troop duties, often as an officer. Their career as bodyguard is over.
That said, if a Seer needs to be neutralized, it is traditionally their paired Hunter's job to strike the killing blow. While being a Hunter is usually a lifetime career, those who have had to kill their Seer can retire from service. The Order is not unsympathetic to their trauma.
Regarding our dear Mira...
Mira is unique in their own way, though not to the same extent that the MC is.
In Mira's case, they genuinely are a prodigy. They've been with the Order since they were a child and took to the training like a fish to water. Their proficiency is precisely why they were paired with MC - who better to protect the Order's most precious Seer than their most skilled Hunter?
Mira is also special in that they have four soul-bound weapons. No touchy.
About The Twilight Order
The Twilight Order is a neutral faction that pays no homage to any nation but demands fealty from them all. It was formed for the sole purpose of defeating the Nightmare threat, and they have stayed true to that through the decades. Members of the Order are strictly forbidden from meddling with politics unless it furthers their mission. The faction itself takes no interest in the rise and fall of kingdoms outside of keeping their funding secure.
The Order is given a begrudging kind of respect on the global politics scale. Many people view the Order with suspicion, especially considering the number of secrets they keep and how they pointedly disregard whatever laws suit them. However, no one dares rise against them - not just because the Hunter army could decimate a country, but because they're the only ones who can tame the Void.
Though thankfully most governments are content to leave the Order alone, it is a delicate diplomatic balance, so long as they stay out of the political sphere.
Some relevant facts about the Order
Once you are initiated into the Order, you leave your old life behind. Each member takes on the surname 'Twilight' and is encouraged to completely sever ties to their old life. This rule is less strictly enforced with members who have been with the Order for a while. It's common for commanding officers to look the other way if their subordinates exchange letters with their original families. So long as the individual isn't compromised by these engagements, it's quietly allowed to happen.
The Order takes a similarly vague approach to romantic relationships involving its members. Physical relations & romance are not forbidden, nor is marriage or attempting to start a family. However, if such a relationship compromises the participants, it will be condemned, and those involved are punished. Duty above all, for the sake of all. No exceptions.

polygyny, infanticide, and conflict in sexually imbalanced hunter-gatherer populations
content notes: rape, infanticide, murder
Hunter-gatherers’ primary method of population control is infanticide, and they preferentially kill female children. Some of the reasons are that men are more useful for defending the family and tribe (women basically never fought, although this changed a little bit after archery, except in home defense), and for obtaining food, especially in areas (like the Arctic) where foraging yields much less than hunting.
So, how strong is the sex imbalance?
Infanticide is often covert and attributed to accidents, but census statistics of pre-industrial societies tell an unmistakable story. Although the number of male and female babies should be nearly equal at birth (105:100 in favour of boys), there are many more boys than girls in childhood. Surveys of hundreds of different communities from over 100 different cultures (of which about a fifth were hunter–gatherers) has shown that juvenile sex ratios averaged 127:100 in favour of boys, with an even higher rate in some societies. The Eskimos are one of the most extreme cases. Their harsh environment made them wholly dependent on male hunting, whereas female foraging played a greater economic role in milder climates. Thus female infanticide was particularly widespread among them. They registered childhood sex ratios of 150:100 and even 200:100 in favour of boys.
So, this is awkward, because fighting over women is one of the primary causes of hunter-gatherer conflict and warfare. The standard objective of a raid – the primary form of lethal conflict across hunter-gatherer societies – is to kill all the enemy men, grab their stuff, and kidnap the women. There’s a quote from an Australian hunter-gatherer man asked by an anthropologist whether his motivation for a raid was food, and responds, ‘Even though we like meat, we like women a whole lot more!’ In unfortunate addition, the more insecure a society is about warfare the more it’ll prefer to have male children:
In this way, as statistical studies show, male and female numbers in primitive societies—highly tilted in favour of males in childhood—tend to level out in adulthood. Violent conflict is thus one of the principal means through which competition over women is both expressed and resolved. Furthermore, as Divale and Harris have shown, there is a vicious circle here: in societies that lived under the constant threat and eventuality of violence, families’ preference for males who would protect them increased.
Note that it’s not just that you can resolve competition by kidnapping your enemy tribe’s women – in the process of going to war, some men on your own side will die, decreasing the competition pressure.
Cool, cool. So, competition for females is a primary driver of hunter-gatherer warfare. Time to have... polygyny!
Polygyny was very common in hunter-gatherer societies – although approximately the majority had one wife, the most powerful men almost always had multiple, and the wife Gini index goes up the more resource-dense an environment is. “There was a direct correlation of resource density, resource accumulation and monopolization, social ranking, and polygyny.” – the more resources you can accumulate, the more mouths you can feed in your family, the more clout you can have in your community to take more wives without resentment blowing up. In the resource-scarce Kalahari Desert, !Kung men are largely one-wife, but 5% of married men had two wives. The case is similar among native Eskimos in the mid-Canadian Arctic. In contrast, studies of Australian tribes say that 10~15% of married men have three wives. In even more productive Australian land, a few men hit double digits of wives. As you may guess:
Polygyny greatly exacerbated women’s scarcity and direct and indirect male competition and conflict over them. Indeed, a cross-cultural study has found polygyny to be one of the most distinctive correlates that there is of feuding and internal warfare.
Incidentally, this makes the question of when and how monogamy became so entrenched as the default in Western society fascinating to me, because it seems incredibly useful – I assume it mitigates a primary source of violent conflict, and helps large-scale societies hold together. I wonder whether it’s linked to the success of Christian societies.
The fact that the male/female sex ratio is so (artificially) imbalanced to start with but levels out as men die off seems to have affected the timing of male puberty.
As mentioned earlier, among the victims of male competition for women are the young adult males, who are obliged to postpone marriage for quite a long time. This universal and probably very old trend among primitive human communities has some interesting evolutionary consequences. Men reach sexual maturity at an older age than women, which is quite the opposite from what we would expect in view of the fact that man’s reproductive role and reproductive organs involve a much lighter physical burden than the woman’s. The main reason for this later male maturation seems to be male competition. Men are given a few more years to grow up and gain strength before being exposed to potential violent conflict.

Legends Arceus is really on the right track for where to take pokemon as a series gameplay-wise, but the areas where the game lacks already tells me enough to not hope too highly. Because the pokemon devs, they really are just incompetent lol. Either they themselves as developers are incompetent, or the situations in which they produce games causes them to be incompetent -- there's no other way around it other than to say that these games are simply not made well.
I think the menus and UI of the game just symbolizes my issues. Just look at how things are set up. Look at how Jubilife Village places the inventory box far away from the general store, and even further from the farm and the training grounds. Look at how the camps are set up so if you want to buy items or swap pokemon, you talk to this random generic dude... who can also let you rest, even though the bed where you can rest is right there next to him? But oh no you can't access items through him, no you have to go to the box a little further down for some reason. And this is ignoring the fact that Laventon is RIGHT THERE, only needed for reporting pokedex info and going back to Jubilife -- why couldnt they have just made him the one guy you talk to for all this? It's confusing how they decided to organize these things. Look at the pause menu: why is saving the game its own subscreen? and why is the map not a pause-menu subscreen, but its own designated button? Up and Down on the d-pad are menu buttons, but Left and Right change out your ride pokemon, yet its the plus button on the other joycon that actually brings out the ride pokemon... So much of menu interaction and button configurations are so weirdly decided to me.
Beyond that I'm also critical about how lifeless this game is. Jubilife Village WANTS to be this place the develops into a lively home that you like to return to... but then included zero mechanics to actually immerse you that way. It's an area that's too big for its own good, organized in the most bland way possible -- just space that they make you run around in so that the game can be padded out. There's nothing to do in this town except fill/take requests, and stock up for the next expedition. The NPCs are all generic, to the point of many of them being clones of one another -- no personality or history to any of these guys except the bare minimum. When it DOES try to give some depth, the best they can do is shit like the shopkeeper questlines, a bunch of nonsense back-and-forth running in order to expand the shop's items, but given this obnoxious coat of a "story." So many instances where the most generic character in the world of video games asks me to do some asinine task over and over around town until they finally give me my reward. And then the plot of the game just makes you dislike these people even more lol.
Jubilife had a lot of potential they squandered. It should have felt like a settlement you were actually building, with ACTUAL mechanics that built the place up. There could have been mechanics for building new houses or stores or activity places, and you would need to catch certain types of pokemon to make those areas. You could recruit people to your settlement, and NPCs could have had actual routines of going about their day, at least a basic enough day-night cycle of walking around. But nope, there's NOTHING to do here. Such a waste of space. (And god I HATE the Galaxy Team building, another waste of space except with a building thats designed by a five year-old. I literally feel sick having to walk through this place.)
Outside of Jubilife things are still lifeless. Pokemon populate the place but theyre spread out and don't do anything except walk around. There was potential to see pokemon interacting in unique ways, maybe two types of pokemon would fight over turf, or you would find some pokemon playing with each other or examining something. Nope. They just walk around with one of three basic personalities for reacting to the PC. There's nothing interesting you can do with them except feed them, fight them, or catch them. There's very few NPCs running around, certainly none of them are very interesting or liven things up, usually just people standing around with a request.
I'm also really done with Pokemon's story wanting to be more than the developers can actually deliver on. Just sick of it. You know I got really bugged by this game very early on, when youre introduced to the Galaxy boss, and the first thing he does to you is sumo throw you. Wait no, he doesn't ACTUALLY sumo throw you-- there's just a flash of light, and we're TOLD that he sumo threw you. Wtf???? WHY???? IF YOU CANT ANIMATE SOMEONE SUMO THROWING ANOTHER PERSON, WHY MAKE THAT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS??????? I am soooo sick of forgiving things like this!! Just don't make that a scene if you cant commit to actually playing it out!! Have him do ANYTHING else as his quirk!! Or just buckle down and make an animation!! Fuuuuck man this reminds me a LOT of Fire Emblem Three Houses, a game just chock FULL of characters "doing things" when they couldnt be assed to actually animate anything resembling the actions.
ughhgh and why cant you do ANYTHING with your pokemon for fun?? Jesus, I have to be grateful just because Im allowed to call them out of their balls...... and stand around?? Whyyyyyy is this all we can DO with our beloved pokemon??? You cant even feed them! They couldnt even program that, a mechanic that ALREADY exists in the game, they couldnt let you do that with your own pokemon. No camping, no petting, no grooming, no minigames. Nothing. Why do I have to BEG for some of the most basic concepts -- mechanics that have ALREADY EXISTED??? What's the excuse??? What IS the excuse for Arceus??? "Too many pokemon to animate" there's like 200 in this game, get over it! Do the work! "The explorable areas are really big" boo hoo! You made them all generic as hell and without anything meaningful in them, and now youre also gonna use that as an excuse for not making the game better anywhere else? Why is it so hard for them to make a decent game???
Arceus is sooo much fun in the areas where it works, so many improvements to the formula that have revived pokemon for me, but it's all just a reminder of how far away we are from a quality pokemon game, a game that actually intends on being full and fun for the player involved. Sooo close, Arceus, soooooo fucking close, but these devs do not have the resources to do you justice.
