Greetings, Magister Neloth!
It is no mystery that your stay on the isle of Solstheim, besides the notional study of heartstones, also includes research of the daedric grimoires known as Black Books. While the effects of these dangerous artifacts are relatively well-known, your own relationship with them is not.
Would you care to elaborate on your history with these Black Books and their creator? Did they become a research subject by happenstance or is there a more personal investment involved?
Your question is incredibly forward, but I shall humor it within reason.
Hermaeus Mora is neither considered one of the Good Daedra nor part of the House of Troubles. As an entity, he is neutral in most dealings, with relatively well-defined rules of engagement, motives, and boundaries. It is rare that one strolls into Apocrypha unwittingly. Anyone who considers themself a scholar knows well what to expect and what is expected of them when dealing with Hermaeus Mora. That being said, I was quite young when first introduced to the endless libraries.
Given a mere glimpse into the fathomless depths of Apocrypha, I was left bedridden for weeks as my family’s best healers attempted to repair my fractured mind. I made a full recovery (despite what some might claim), and for a time I devoted myself to regaining entry to Apocrypha while also retaining my sanity. It took much trial and error, combining the schools of Restoration and Mysticism in ways never before attempted. Now mind you, this was in the late second era, when travel between Nirn and the realms of Oblivion was both deeply frowned upon and strangely accessible, if one knew where to look.
After several years of training my mind and strengthening my Will, I was able to locate a functional portal on the Telvanni peninsula. And thus, the infinite knowledge of Apocrypha stretched before me.
Tumblr media
Of course, no mortal enters Mora’s realm without drawing the attention of the Great Eye, and he naturally chose to address me personally after I’d managed to pass as a visitor on multiple occasions. He offered me a contract, which I did not immediately accept, but gave great consideration. A contract with any Daedra is not something to be taken lightly, though in my upbringing it is considered far less taboo than in other parts of Tamriel. With the attainment of great power there must also be an equal sacrifice. In the end, I presented a counter-contract, and we reached an agreement. I was given access to Apocrypha in exchange for my conditional servitude.
What does ‘servitude’ under Hermaus Mora look like, you might ask? You must fashion yourself to be an eternal Apprentice of arcane study, and he is your ever-watchful Master. There is no knowledge you possess that Mora does not also have access to. In a sense, you are sharing your mind with a God.
As for the Black Books, my mind is protected from the madness that these artifacts can induce so long as I remain faithful to our agreement. Each Book is an entry point into Apocrypha without having to physically leave Nirn. As to the conditions of my contract, I shall be keeping those to myself. And upon the expiration of my mortal body, I have a promised place in Apocrypha, where I shall continue the Work into eternity and beyond. I can imagine no better fate for myself.

Topsy, for your ask game you made, please answer me a good four or five you're -really fast eyes- to answer :>
I'd ask all of them otherwise lol
Oohoho you're giving me freedom?? That's so nice of you. I'm going to exploit this and, in favor of an OC, I pick our favorite NPC to answer these: NELOTH!
Do they believe the College of Winterhold caused the Great Collapse? If no, what is their theory?
"While there are certainly mages who could cause such a catastrophic event, I very much doubt the College had anything to do with the Great Collapse. No, it was most likely caused by something rather mundane. The seismic quakes from the eruption of Red Mountain, perhaps. If you're going to build a city perched on the edge of the sea, you should surely account for the forces of nature when doing so. Yes, I'm afraid it was simply hubris that caused the collapse of Winterhold. The College stands because Shalidor was one of the greatest mages known to history and protected the structure against such inevitable things as natural disasters. It's only a matter of time before Solitude crumbles into the sea as well."
Do they regret journeying to Skyrim?
"Regret is a useless emotion driven by fear and attachment. Do I regret walking from one end of the room to the other simply because it requires me to leave my belongings temporarily? Live as long as I have and you'll find that there is very little point in languishing away over 'regrets'. There are simply actions you have taken and actions you have yet to take. One must adapt to the consequences accordingly."
Do they believe in snow/sky whales?
"What in the name of Oblivion is a sky whale?"
If they are a magic user, what is their favorite school of magic? Do they have a natural talent for magic, or does it require diligence and study?
"What a charming and utterly juvenile question. What might the point of choosing a 'favorite' school of magic be? Are we children? All spells have their uses, though I could argue over 'schools' and classifications until Alduin himself returns to devour us all and end my suffering. "And as for the second question: also ridiculous. All are born with the gifts of Magnus. It is a skill like anything else, one that can be cultivated through devoted study. Though there is no accounting for intelligence, I'm afraid."

For the Asks to Spread Love, pick and answer 3 that you haven't been asked already! 🧡
Hello again, bri!! Thanks for sending more of these for me! I've really enjoyed catching up on them and thinking through these today!
Fandom Positivity asks from this game here.
10. A popular character you actually really like and why.
I do like me some rare characters most of all lol. My perspective is a bit biased because I love the ones I love and I don't mind if they aren't "popular" per se. (:
LOL -- The obvious answer is Teldryn, right? But I'm gonna talk about
💫Neloth 💫
instead.
I think he's popular to dunk on because he's been a very big pain in the ass in the games for centuries to everyone who will listen to him. I mean, since the events of Morrowind at minimum. (:
Why do I like him? Because of how he's been written by myself and a few friends -- namely @thana-topsy, @paraparadigm (TOOTHPICK!), and @thequeenofthewinter.
I love to see how other people take this character and run with what we're given in text ESPECIALLY considering how ridiculous he is to deal with and his general attitude toward other living things.
For myself, where I write him as a long term friend of Nerevarine!Teldryn Sero, I love to use his character as an opportunity to talk about the struggle of redemption. How does one redeem themselves from a lifetime of difficult choices made to fit into a specific perception? Does this perception eventually end up becoming a core facet of who you are as a person? If that is the case, can you change? Are the consequences of your choices enough to make you irredeemable? Further, can you forgive yourself if change does not come easily or if you return to old behaviors much too easily?
He's a complicated one, I think, especially by the events of Skyrim. He's not exactly estranged from the rest of House Telvanni, but the connection is tenuous and fraught as the House is still, apparently, recovering from the Red Year. In Morrowind it was very much the opposite. There's gotta be a kind of grief to this shift under the uncaring, hyperfocused exterior.
He's annoying, yes, but very interesting to me, and so he's in my fic. And he's actually a huge part of the latter half of the book.
11. Recommend a fic with an unusual/original headcanon or characterisation that you loved.
OH I'm SHOUTING OUT @changelingsandothernonsense's Danger!JOSH (aka Nerevarine Teldryn Sero)'s Nerevar-as-a-parasite situation in Serious Mistakes.
This angry spirit, more or less, lives in the ring and speaks into Teldryn's BRAIN and sometimes drives the entire car, so to speak and I've never ever read anything like it, holy shit. I'm a beta reader for this particular project and I literally cannot yell about it enough.
It's a novelization of the Teldryn Serious mod which was already intriguing, but AH. MY GOODNESS the Nerevar situation.
Let me show you. From chapter 4:
Aren’t you meant to be looking for something? “Oh, you’re still here?” Teldryn rasped, as if saying it out aloud mattered here. You should be thanking me. Teldryn grunted in annoyance, he had a point, he hated it when he was right. His mouth was dry. He wanted to stay where he was. Sleep. You can’t stay here! Get up! Teldryn groaned. Right again – the tide was coming in, if he didn’t find what he was looking for now, then it would be gone by morning. He needed his keys. Was there an Argonian on the beach? He couldn’t remember. His head hurt. He pinched the bridge of his nose, it did little to relieve the pressure. He always overdid it on the magicka, and now he was nauseous.
It's fucking cool, isn't it? (:
19. Give kudos to someone who leaves great comments.
OH GLADLY. Here's where I shout out @polypolymorph!!!
Okay so I could pick out a bunch of comments -- or novel-length responses. Each comment turns into an opportunity for a conversation and I'm always beside myself to hear back from her.
But right now, I'm still grinning ear to ear over, you guessed it. Eyestalks. Eye. Stalks.
(on this project here.)

Which would you prefer/can you see happening and why?
Clingy, jealous and submissive Ancano that demands attention and stalks anyone that interacts with you —VS— Show off sugar daddy Ancano who makes sure you live life in luxury, absolute Karen when it comes to you.
Animalistic Faendal, enjoys “hunting” the Dragonborn, brings them bone “trinkets”, stalks them by their scent —VS— goodie two shoes Faendal who is allergic to anything other than romance, generally submissive, cooks meals for the Dragonborn, literal housewife.
Neloth that is secretly submissive, peak romance would be reading books with him, you have to sleep in a separate room, free grandpa —VS— Neloth that acts uninterested, but teases the Dragonborn on purpose, makes comments about them staring or being anxious around him, excessively sadistic, sees the Dragonborn as a toy.
Nazir who treats the Dragonborn like a child, will not allow them to leave his sight, brings them jewelry, would kill for them—VS— Nazir, cannot commit to a relationship, acts like he doesn’t know the Dragonborn in person, definition of asshole.
Holy- these- these are really really good 😯
1. Sugar daddy Ancano- Karen Ancano, it just seems so funny to me, while reading it I kept laughing just thinking about this.
Ancano: THEY ASKED FOR NO PICKLES!
LDB: *huddled behind the angry thalmor, huffing*
2. Housewife Faendal- my last playthrough I made him my steward for my Lakeview manor and I always called him my Bosmer-boy wife so…
3. Submissive Neloth- I’m sorry but I mean- come on!
4. Babysitter Nazir, I would LIVE for that thank you! Plus the gifts would be a nice bonus- the killing not so much, but I see, hear, smell nothin!-

Thoughts on the Nerevarine?
Oh, I have many. I would caution you against asking such open-ended questions in the future. Specificity and precision will give you the answers you seek far more directly. Unless your goal was to hear me ramble endlessly.
My personal interactions with the Nerevarine were limited, and I have held no great place in my memory for any of it. I voted in favor of their becoming Hortator, and then they were off… Truth be told, I barely remember what they look like. They were Dunmer. At least I think… Maybe they were wearing a helmet…  It matters not.
As for the so-called ‘prophecy’ propagated by those bug-eating Ashlanders, I suppose it did the trick. The Sixth House was eradicated and Morrowind was saved from the Blight. Whether or not the Nerevarine was Indoril Nerevar reincarnate, well, there is no definitive proof. I have my doubts. But the function of prophecy rarely cares for the individual. Much like your question, prophecies are vague by design.
