I was rewatching that scene in 7x21 where Tommy returns and says "You are living proof that people can change" because honestly all of that episode is my favourite of season 7 and imo one of the best episodes/scenes in Arrow, it shows how far we've come since the beginning and ugh it just makes me so emotional. And I thought the music was so beautiful in that scene so I wanted to go back and listen to that again. And then I realised I'd never actually listened to that soundtrack before, because the official season 7 soundtrack hasn't been released yet :( it's a great track anyway!

the Tommy stuff was cool. Much better than I expected - they finally did a good job and used Colin Donnell’s appearance well! honestly, YAY! FOR! THAT!
the flash forward stuff with Felicity and William - I am very interested in this storyline! Unfortunately, they just keep dragging shit out with conversational gymnastics that go nowhere. Just like everything else this entire season, we have a tiny bit of substance that is insanely inflated. We should have the answers they’re hinting at by now. We should have had those answers months ago.
everything else was the same old inflated bullshit that has plagued this season (and last), honestly. Yawn. Like, wtf even happened in this episode? Can you believe this is the penultimate episode of the season? The second-to-last episode with Felicity?? Because I fucking CANNOT.
Remember “the Merlyn job” in 1x22? How about “You are not alone, and I believe in you” in 2x22? What about when the team goes to Nanda Parbat and Oliver pretends to kill them all in 3x22? Or even (even!) the Rubicon and Genesis shit of 4x22? Not to mention Oliver’s birthday or “I need you down here with me” or “you two have to leave the city” of 5x22...or even (I can’t believe I’m even saying this given how much I hate season 6) “William needs you”/ “William needs us! We’re going to find another way” of 6x22? All of those (in more or less decreasing order) were intense, action-packed, and loaded with emotion. And then there was 7x21. The entire episode could be succinctly summarized in about 2 sentences.
OH. And I know I have already complained about the production quality, but WOW. Can you believe that the penultimate episode of the last full season, the second-to-last episode with Felicity in it...was a BOTTLE EPISODE!? I am legitimately stunned.
So yeah, no, sorry. I know I have a bit of a reputation for being positive, but that’s mainly because I tend to look on the bright side and hold out hope until there’s no more room to hope.
In truth, I still have hope about a few things. Increasingly, I believe that Oliver’s alive and relatively well in the future. I continue to believe Beth Schwartz’s reassurances that “things aren’t as bleak in the future as they seem.” For that reason, I even have hope that (however they work it out, given Emily’s absence) Oliver and Felicity and fam will get some kind of happily ever after. And that’s definitely not nothing!
But the part of me that was expecting some true emotional fulfillment is rapidly losing hope. With the terrible pacing, dragged out storylines that waste everyone’s time, lack of focus on character - and on the actual characters we care about, particularly - and truly abysmal production quality, we’ve basically run out of time. And we’ve definitely run out of time for Felicity.
I know we’re going to get some time with Oliver and Felicity in 7x22. But honestly, even if all my wildest dreams were fulfilled (a whole episode like the last few minutes of 7x18, while Oliver rubs Felicity’s feet and they alternately make out and have deep, meaningful conversations about their past, their choices, their relationship, and their future), it still wouldn’t be enough. Because the thing that used to make this show great was how it interwove those emotional, relationship moments into the plot and action of the show, rather than siloing them off as if they were unrelated and secondary. But the longer this season has worn on, the more it has become clear that the season 7 team, just like the season 6 team, has no idea how to do that.
So I’m sorry, everyone, but I’ve waited and hoped all season long and at this point I’m basically out of positivity. 7x22 is going to happen, and I will try to be grateful for however much Felicity and Olicity we get. But I already know it’s not going to be enough. At this point it’s much, much too late for that.

“Lean in to the best parts of yourself–your loyalty, your selflessness, your courage, your compassion…. You are living proof that people can change.”
This line from 7x21 is great just on the surface because it’s a great description of some of Oliver’s best qualities and it’s a nice moment with Oliver and Tommy (or the memory of Tommy). And I’m in love with any moment that sings Oliver’s well deserved praises.
But the best part of it? Tommy isn’t really there. Tommy isn’t saying this line. Tommy is a hallucination/dream, a product of Oliver’s subconscious. Which means Oliver is saying this line. It means Oliver is recognizing those qualities in himself.
Oliver who spent the better part of 8 years being at least somewhat suicidal. Oliver who refused to come home for several years because he thought he was poison. Oliver who for so long pushed people away because he thought that all he did was ruin the lives of those he cared about. Oliver who has called himself broken, and a monster.
That same Oliver has changed and can now recognize that, among many other exemplary qualities, he is loyal and selfless and courageous and compassionate.
