A fun thing they don’t really discuss with you until after you’ve had your cancer surgery is the propensity for lymphedema afterwards. Swelling of the surgical area to put it mildly.
The more lymph nodes you have to have removed, the higher your chances are for developing lymphedema. I had 12 removed (cancer in 7 of them) so my chances were up there. I have a mild case. Class A. Most people can’t tell my arm is swollen but me. I feel it underneath, in the arm pit, and into me bewb. It gets hot and painful too. Fun times.
Basically, because you don’t have lymph nodes there anymore, there’s nothing to drain the lymphatic system of that fluid. There is no cure. And treatments are still very primitive. Me for instance, all I can do is wear a compression sleeve while exercising or working with that arm (my right arm of course) or during a flare up, and they taught me some lymphatic massage and exercises to try to help move the liquids along and get them to drain into another part of the lymphatic system.
I have to avoid needles in that arm, BP cuffs, injuries, and insect bites. Even sunburn. Anything that might cause swelling and/or infection.
Today I scrubbed the kitchen. Did I remember to wear my sleeve? Of course not! By 4:30 (2 hours after finishing) my arm is hurting, hot as hell, and starting to swell.
So the hubs is making dinner and I’m sitting here with my sleeve on and my arm raised above my heart. And there’s still so much more to do in that nasty kitchen! (I need someone to come in and do a deep clean if I’m gonna blow up every time I try to do it)

Clothing Thoughts in 2024 with Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome and Lymphedema
My @shopmyviolet order will be here soon! 💜🌸✨ I've been working on adding to my pastel wardrobe , and experimenting with everything will be a lot of fun! I love the mix of frothiness, layering to build shape, playfulness, and gentle silhouettes. What I find most impressive is that My Violet is able to make an adorable, maximalist garment extremely wearable and comfortable.
I've ordered from them previously, and their 100% cotton Babydoll (1. 2.) and Cadoodle dresses are items I end up wearing every week. They save the day every time I need something non-restrictive, but I still want to look cute. I especially appreciate they are a small, woman-owned business who produces ethically, and their sizes go up to 5X. As of 22 March 2024, their 5X is sized - B: 60-63", W: 54-57", H: 64-67". You can find the whole size chart here.
One very annoying thing about my long list of chronic illnesses are the issues with clothing. It sounds minor, but the wrong clothing for me could lead to life threatening issues, so I have to be exceedingly cautious. Within the last 8 years, as Lymphedema developed, my body has become extremely "picky" about pressure. It's a long explanation, but basically, I end up needing garments a certain amount larger than what my size should be to prevent blood clots and lymph clogs.
Lately, my creative goal has been, "Don't hurt me, but also fashion." It's a tall order. I find that pieces I can adjust are super helpful, i.e. items with lacing, multiple button or hook and eye "settings," and I've been looking for the perfect wrap skirt or dress.
Elastic bands, when they are actually putting pressure on me, are my worst enemy. However(!), if I can buy (x) garment with elastic in waist big enough that there are inches to spare in the waist, even when seated, and it has a drawstring, or it will at least gently rest at my hips instead of my waist---we are in business. I do need a different type of pressure for medical assistance--compression garments!
So what's the difference between those and elastic bands? Elastic bands, even the wide ones, unevenly put pressure on a body that doesn't move its lymph fluid very well. It's sort of like if you were to wear a really tight hair band around your wrist all day. You know how it would get really uncomfortable and it might turn your skin a bit purple underneath? It's cutting off your circulation a bit!
My lymphatic and vascular systems don't do what they should, so they're very sensitive to little "insults." A compression garment, like a stocking, leggings, arm sleeve, or shirt, targets larger problem areas, helping the circulatory system where it's stressed instead of further stressing it. (Wearing a proper garment at the wrong time can also be bad! It's hard to nail down.)
They don't always have to be Rx garments. Over the years, I've adapted most of what I have because I was very dissatisfied with my first Rx garments. They didn't completely address my needs, and they are extremely expensive. With needs that shift and evolve and the medical industry very behind, I've found it better to help myself how I can.
Fashion is just something I like to have fun with. I'm not particularly well-dressed, and it's not what I studied. Nonetheless, wearing beautiful things makes me happy, and it gives me something to look forward to. My outfits tend towards tacky and garish, but I'm cool with being me.

Everything You Should Know About Compression Garment
Do you remember those thick, beige stockings your grandma used to wear? It turns out that compression garments have come a long way since then. Today, they're not just for medical needs – athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and regular people are also choosing to wear these comfortable and stretchy garments.
Compression garments are like advanced versions of regular clothes, applying gentle pressure to muscles and tissues. They offer various benefits, from improving athletic performance to managing health conditions. Whether you're recovering from surgery, exercising, or just need extra support, there's a compression garment for you. Let's explore what, how, and benefits of these garments.
What is a Compression Garment?
A compression garment is a tight, stretchy clothing item that applies gentle pressure to specific areas of the body. It is designed to improve circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, and aid in recovery. Compression garments are popular among athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals seeking comfort and support in everyday activities.
Here are the key characteristics of compression garments:
Made from stretchy, breathable fabrics.
Provide graduated compression, meaning they are tighter at the extremities and gradually loosen towards the core.
Available in various styles, including socks, sleeves, tops, and full-body suits.
Offered in medical-grade and non-medical options.
The science behind it:
How do these squeeze-tastic garments work their magic? It's all about blood flow and keeping things moving:
Boosting blood flow: Picture your veins and arteries getting a high-five from the inside out. The gentle pressure improves circulation, promoting efficient delivery of oxygen and removal of waste products.
Defeat the Swelling: Feeling swollen? Compression garments act like tiny pumps, pushing excess fluid out of your tissues and leaving you feeling lighter and more comfortable.
Types Of Compression Garments
Now that you've grasped the basics of compression, let's get down to specifics! These versatile garments come in a variety of forms, each targeting different body parts and needs.
Leg Garments:
Socks and stockings: The classics! From ankle-high to thigh-high, these come in various compression levels for medical conditions, athletic performance, or everyday comfort.
Knee-highs: Ideal for targeted support around the knee joint, perfect for post-surgery recovery or joint pain management.
Leggings and tights: Offering full-leg compression stockings for men and women, these are popular choices for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, or anyone seeking muscle support and improved circulation.
Compression pants: Similar to leggings, but with added compression and coverage around the hips and buttocks, often used for lymphedema management.
Torso Garments:
Arm sleeves: Great for athletes or individuals with arm lymphedema, these offer targeted compression for improved circulation and reduced swelling.
Compression vests: Providing torso compression, these can be used for various medical conditions or by athletes for core support and improved posture.
Shapewear: Yes, even shapewear can incorporate compression! These garments offer body-shaping benefits while promoting improved circulation and posture.
Specialized Garments:
Post-surgical garments: Specially designed for different types of surgery, these offer targeted compression to aid healing and reduce swelling.
Pregnancy support garments: Designed to support the growing belly and provide relief from back pain and discomfort.
Sports-specific garments: From compression socks for runners to arm sleeves for golfers, these are tailored to specific sports for optimal performance and recovery.
Remember, this is just a glimpse into the diverse world of compression garments! With so many options available, you're sure to find the perfect fit for your needs and body parts.
Benefits of Compression Garments
Compression garments are beneficial in several ways. It can be divided into two main categories: Medical uses and Non-Medical uses.
Medical uses:
Improve circulation and lymphatic drainage.
Reduce swelling and edema.
Manage chronic conditions like lymphedema, varicose veins, and DVT.
Aid post-surgical recovery.
Non-medical uses:
Enhance athletic performance and recovery.
Offer muscle support and reduce soreness.
Improve proprioception and body awareness.
Provide a body-shaping effect (shapewear).
Precautions and Considerations
While compression garments offer a range of benefits, it's important to remember they're not for everyone. Folks with certain pre-existing health conditions, open wounds, or allergies to specific materials should consult their doctor before diving in. Remember, discomfort or pain can indicate an improper fit or use, so listen to your body and adjust accordingly. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for wear and care, and don't hesitate to seek medical advice if you're unsure about using compression garments for your specific needs. Safety first, comfort second, and then you can enjoy the full potential of these!
The Wrap Up
Compression garments have come a long way, offering targeted support, improved circulation, and potential benefits for various needs. From medical benefits to athlete support, there's a garment out there for everyone. Puffy Pockets Around Ankles: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment for Lymphedema
Tumblr media
Have you ever noticed swelling or puffy pockets around your ankles? This could be a sign of a condition called lymphedema, which affects the lymphatic system and can have an impact on your overall health and wellbeing. In this article, we will discuss what lymphedema is, what causes it, its symptoms, and how to treat it.
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a condition where the lymphatic system fails to properly drain fluids from certain parts of the body, leading to swelling and discomfort. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing excess fluids and waste products from the body and transporting immune cells to fight off infections. Lymphedema can occur due to a malfunction in the lymphatic system, damage to the lymph nodes or vessels, or as a result of surgery, radiation therapy, or infection. It can affect any part of the body but is most commonly seen in the arms or legs.
Causes of Lymphedema
There are two types of lymphedema - primary and secondary. Primary lymphedema is caused by a congenital abnormality in the lymphatic system, while secondary lymphedema occurs as a result of damage to the lymphatic system. Some common causes of secondary lymphedema include: - Cancer treatment: Surgery or radiation therapy can damage the lymph nodes or vessels, leading to lymphedema. - Infection: Certain infections such as cellulitis can cause inflammation and damage to the lymphatic system. - Trauma: Injuries or trauma that affect the lymph nodes or vessels can lead to lymphedema. - Obesity: Being overweight or obese can put excess pressure on the lymphatic system, leading to lymphedema.
Symptoms of Lymphedema
The most common symptom of lymphedema is swelling or puffiness in the affected area. Other symptoms may include: - Heaviness or tightness in the affected area - Limited range of motion - Aching or discomfort - Skin changes, such as thickening or hardening - Recurrent infections in the affected area
Treatment for Lymphedema
While there is no cure for lymphedema, there are various treatment options that can help manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. Some common treatment options include: - Compression therapy: Wearing compression garments such as sleeves or stockings can help reduce swelling and improve lymphatic flow. - Manual lymphatic drainage: This is a type of massage that involves gentle, rhythmic movements to stimulate the lymphatic system and reduce swelling. - Exercise: Regular exercise can help improve lymphatic flow and reduce swelling. - Skin care: Proper skin care can help prevent infections and reduce the risk of complications. - Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be required to remove excess tissue or repair damaged lymphatic vessels.
Puffy Pockets Around Ankles and Lymphedema Life Expectancy
Lymphedema can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life, and it is important to seek treatment to manage the symptoms and prevent complications. While lymphedema itself does not affect life expectancy, the underlying causes such as cancer or infection can impact overall health and longevity.
Conclusion
Puffy pockets around ankles can be a sign of lymphedema, a condition where the lymphatic system fails to properly drain fluids from the body. Understanding the causes and symptoms of lymphedema can help you seek appropriate treatment to manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. If you are experiencing swelling or discomfort in any part of your body, it is important to speak with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and explore treatment options.
FAQs
Can lymphedema be cured? Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for lymphedema. However, there are various treatment options available that can help manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life. It is important to seek medical advice and work with a healthcare provider to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs. What is the difference between primary and secondary lymphedema? Primary lymphedema is caused by a congenital abnormality in the lymphatic system, while secondary lymphedema occurs as a result of damage to the lymphatic system due to cancer treatment, infection, trauma, or obesity. How is lymphedema diagnosed? Lymphedema can be diagnosed through a physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests such as ultrasound or lymphoscintigraphy. Is lymphedema painful? Lymphedema can cause discomfort, heaviness, or aching in the affected area, but it is not always painful. Can lymphedema be prevented?
