I can hardly be expected to have shelf control if Indie Bookstore Day and my birthday are within, like, a week of each other, right?? ESPECIALLY not if one of them was doing a Buy 3 Get 1 Free on paperbacks (evidenced by the bottom row), and if ARCHANGELS OF FUNK and TRANSLATION STATE were Birthday Gifts To Myself (pre-ordered in December and everything!)??

Anyway! Great week for books! Good thing we gave up on the moderated book buying ban, huh.

Archangels of Funk

Archangels of Funk by Andrea Hairston

this is a tricky book to review! i liked it, let's start there. it took me a while to get into a groove with it, but we got there together, this book and i, and then at the end i got weepy which is always a plus. but i somehow read the entire thing not knowing that it's a sequel, or at the very least a followup, to two of Hairston's other books—which did clear up for me why i felt a bit lost most of the time while reading it, but which i'm actually glad i didn't know, because i probably wouldn't have requested the galley otherwise.

happily, i did request the galley, and read it in a few big chunks separated by several weeks, because other tasks got in the way of my fun reading time for a while; the second half of the book really went better for me than the first. i came into it feeling like i was rushed and running behind on deadlines both self-imposed and imposed by the publication date (spoiler: this book has been out for a few weeks already, whoops). that's not my favorite way to jump into any book, but really was hindering me reading this one, which has such a strong rhythm and music that it was like walking out of sync with the beat. i'm a person who walks in rhythm when there's a rhythm, bops when there's music (and often when the music is just in my head), and who reads best and most immersively when i can just let the prose carry me along. after totally blowing past the pub date and being busy-then-sick, i came back to it with a much more relaxed and open mind, and i had a great time. tl;dr, this is very much a book to read when nothing's pressing on you and you just want to float on feeling.

Hairston presents an imaginable future not too far from our present, after Water Wars have widened class (and, because they are inevitably linked, racial) divides into high tech walled communities and the folks who build their communities outside the reach of marketing and surveillance. we experience this world through shifting povs, including Cinnamon Jones, a pushing-sixty coder, farmer, performer, hoodoo practitioner, and community leader; her two dogs, each of whom is a bit more than a regular dog in their own unique ways; Indigo, a young goth who gives us a sense of this world outside of Cinnamon's farm and her immediate circle; and the Circus Bots, three performing robots possessed of powerful AI and modeled after Cinnamon's grandparents and great aunt, elders who continue to pleasantly haunt the narrative. and tying all this together is the mysterious Taiwo, who is perhaps a human war vet or a magician or a loa spirit or an alien, a top-hatted presence bringing unreality and real safety to the ensemble cast simultaneously.

it feels rare to me to read a story where AIs are pushing love and learning and creating community; where ghosts (in this case, haints) are a reassuring and life-affirming presence. those elements together, and mixed with straight up magic, feel very right and even more rare to me, and really encapsulate the ways in which this story is about both past and future, about celebration and revelation, about stage magic and real magic and technology and love, and what those things create together.

the deets

how i read it: as i mentioned, this was an e-galley from NetGalley that i'm very grateful to have had access to, even though i did not actually manage to read it before it was published. but i liked it enough that this is one i will probably buy for myself and definitely give as a gift to a friend also!

try this if you: dig really musical prose, enjoy a book where you have to just go with the flow, love a sweet slow pace, or were ever or still are a weird performing arts person. also i bet the audiobook of this is a banger.

some bits i really liked: relatable Cinnamon moments

The straw bale sugar shack made Cinnamon want a stack of blueberry pancakes with lots of syrup and butter. Jugs of maple lined the walls. Her mouth watered at maple candy, cookies, biscuits and cream pies. There was also maple relish, and maple suckers formed into weasel sculptures with mint-green eyes. Goodies for Festival.

Cinnamon was a righteous rebel, a champion of the people. Secretly, she also felt superior to comfy, gullible users who'd been hacked and deep faked from day one, who thought they controlled their feeds, their fates, who believed they made up their own minds. Nobody made up their own mind. Mind was always a community affair.

And then somehow you get into a Karaoke setting and he plays your favorite song by accident and you just excitedly sing along not caring how goofy you look so he accidentally reveals himself smirking just having a totally good time watching you adfhj

His TV Star

Gabriel’s plan to mess with the boys goes south when you enter the picture. He plans on making you the star of the show.

Gabriel has got to say, he likes Dean's taste. Dr. Sexy MD was something that the archangel could get behind. Which is exactly why it was the first "show" he zapped them into when he decided to mess with them.

When Gabriel heard the boys were in town, he couldn't resist. It's always so fun to mess with the Winchesters, but now Gabriel was also drawn to the fact that he noticed that they had a little sister. The archangel wanted to get a closer look.

"This was not a hospital two seconds ago..." Sam mused and Dean just gave him a look. You all looked around at all the doctors, nurses, and patients as the beeping of medical equipment sounded everywhere.

"Wicked..." You murmured, looking down at your scrubs.

"No Y/N. Do not compliment whatever the hell this is." Dean scolded you and you just shrugged. Then you guys began to explore this bizarre environment you found yourselves in.

Eventually, the Trickster revealed himself after Dean called him out, surprisingly.

"Helloooo...Tricksterrrr..." Gabriel said while gesturing to himself as if this whole situation was completely obvious. Dean just continued to glare at him.

"I think this whole thing is incredible." You said with a smile. I mean, Dean needs to cut some slack. Who wouldn't want to be transported into their favorite TV show?

"Y/N! Do not compliment him!" Dean shouted at you, but Gabriel just smiled and magically apparated in front of you. Instead of being angry or fearful, you just smiled back at him.

"And who is this lovely little cupcake you brought with you?" Gabriel said, eyeing you. Truth be, he knew who you were to them, but the archangel just wanted to see you fluster under his words.

But Dean went rabid.

"Stay away from her!" He angrily shouted, Sam holding him back. Without looking away from you, Gabriel snapped his fingers and disappeared, leaving you guys to solve this puzzle on your own. Apparently, "playing your roles" was the way to go, but you couldn't stop yourself from enjoying this magical reality as your brothers had an existential crisis.

But Gabriel was just hella smitten.

To see such a lovely young lady enjoying his creations, well, it made this whole thing so much more enjoyable. You were laughing, joking, and playing along like it was all some fun game, which it was to Gabriel. Your brothers were miserable, and you also found humor at their expense. You guys had no idea that he was observing this whole thing from afar, and that he was starting to get bored. He smiled to himself, planning to make you the star of this show.

Setting his popcorn aside, Gabriel clapped his hands together.

You were now separated from your brothers. Looking around, you saw you were in the setting of some club or bar. The song Funk Soda blasted throughout the area, to which many people were jamming out to the peppy tune. Colored lights flashed around the area, and the vibe was overall joyful. You were on a stage, karaoke-like, and had a microphone before you.

Nodding to yourself, you remembered that you needed to play your role. But you also kept an eye out for the Trickster. You weren't afraid of him, but you wanted to know what his plan was, getting you alone like this. However, you completely forgot about this whole fake TV reality when your favorite song started to play, a spotlight falling on you.

You couldn't stop yourself from grabbing the mike and excitedly singing along.

It was Deep Down (In My Mind Edit) that was playing, flooding the room with its music. You didn't care how goofy you looked as you twirled and sang along, vocalizing each word with passion as you danced about the stage. Your audience began to clap for you, some even sang along, especially towards the end. As the song ended, your audience cheered for you, and you smiled big, taking in all the praise.

Rockstar Sea Shanty began to play as the next song when you put the microphone back in its place, voice tired from your earlier jamming. But another pair of hands clapping sounded much closer behind you.

Turning around, you saw the man himself, clapping and smirking. But it disappeared for a quick second as slight panic came to his eyes.

"Aw raspberries." He muttered, running a hand through his hair when he realized that you could see him. You just laughed, which reassured Gabriel that he didn't need to leave or conceal himself. Instead, his confidence just came back.

"I see you came dressed for the occasion." You mentioned, gesturing to his gangster-like suit. Gabriel smiled, nodding in agreement.

"Well, when an angel is singing, I need to give her the proper greeting." Gabriel said while gesturing to himself. You laughed again, face turning a bit red.

"I don't know about that...angels aren't as graceful as you'd think." You said and a frown came to his face for a split second. Then, he changed the subject.

"You like the music?" He asked and you nodded, beaming.

"You have great taste." You informed him, smiling, and Gabriel thanked you in that regard, looking quite proud of himself for guessing some of your favorites.

"Where are my brothers?" You asked out of curiosity. It wasn't that you were too worried for them, but you wanted to know why the Trickster separated you guys. Gabriel wanted to know why you didn't seem phased by any of this, but he pushed that curiosity away. He liked the smile and the pep you had, so he really didn't care.

"Getting their nuts cracked." He said casually, and you decided not to inquire further. At least they were moderately surviving.

"Well, I played my part, so what now?" You asked, kind of excited for whatever Gabriel had in mind next. The archangel smirked before snapping his fingers.

You were suddenly in a dress that resembled that of a princess. Before you, Gabriel was dressed up to look like something that seemed to be a prince. Looking around, it seemed to be like something out of a fairytale.

"Play your role, princess. Come get your prince." He said with a grin as he pulled you into his arms. Grinning, you melded with his own energy, feeling for him just as he felt for you. You guys twirled around a bit, you laughing and having a grand old time. Gabriel soon stopped and placed his hands on your hips, pulling you close for a kiss.

However, before that, he held his hand up as if to hide the eyes of the "viewers".

"Cut to commercial." He stated before turning his attention back to you and playing his role in this whole thing, kissing you with love he's never known.

And now, cue the genital herpes commercial with Sam and Dean.

Upcoming in 2024

I don’t really like the idea of New Year’s Resolutions, but here’s what I can look forward to in the new year:

Health Changes — due to having my annual physical in late December, based on my bloodwork results, I do need to make same changes. Specifically, we will be doing Something at least twice a week in addition to our usual walks. I plan to swim on Wednesdays, and I’d like to hike on most Saturdays. (But when weather or time doesn’t allow, we can go to the gym again or do one of the group classes or something.)

Therapy — finally I think I’ve found someone who takes my insurance for real. My first appointment is tomorrow and I really hope I like him. That will be weekly on Mondays if I do.

But, most importantly, BOOKS! — I have properly settled into my new book club group and like the tweaks they’re making to our system. Also, I got 4 books I’ve been really looking forward to for Christmas- plus I bought 2 more + a box set of the next three wheel of time books. PLUS, I just complied a list of books coming out this year that I am very much looking forward to.

Oh oh! About the song things! I usually go on walks and listen to songs and daydream about them, and one of my favorite is Pray by Ryan Vasquez! I usually imagine it with Beelzebub because he's my bbg. Like fr I made a storyline in my head to it I LOVE him <3 sometimes I like to imagine it's when they were in the Celestial Realm, and other times I just funk it.

However this song makes me freaking grieve the fact that I'm awful at writing smut and this would be so fucking perfect for that.

But at the same time, it makes me wanna try??? I mean, it's been years since my last train wreck attempt (I think I was like 18? 19? And now I'm 26) and this song makes it so fucking tempting 🥺💕

To clarify though! This post will contain zero smut and will probably just be super fluffy! Maybe even a bit a suggestive, but nothing smutty.

Story context: Lilith never fell in love with a human, the Celestial War never happened, and the brothers are still angels (and MC still exists despite Lilith not becoming human).

Beel, like both his twins, often sneaks down to the Human realm, where he met and fell in love with MC. Having to keep it a secret from all of his siblings makes the big guy feel guilty, but he's so deeply in love with MC and worships her and every moment they are together.

This starts from the morning after they...did the smutty stuff 😂

Beel pulled the human closer, mind still foggy as he woke up in their bed. Sadly, he was conscious enough to know what day it was, making him tighten his hold on the sleeping woman.

Wake up in the morning when sun shines in

Half awake, half asleep until you chime in

The clock striking its final chords

So get up, get out, rise and shine for the house of the Lord.

Today was Sunday, his Father's day. It was just about the only day of the week most angels saw their Father and most still never interacted with him. They all come together each Sunday to praise Father for all he's done, but in truth, only archangels like Lucifer and Michael truly speak to Him.

The angel didn't want to go, to leave his love alone in the bed after such a wonderful night.

He watched his love for a moment, focusing on the gentle rise and fall of her chest as she slept soundly.

Beel closed his eyes, the night before flashing in his mind.

The man took a finger and lightly traced MC's lips, suddenly receiving a sleepy giggle from the human.

Cause as soon as I close my eyes

Brings me back to my temple in between those thighs

My mind does a full eclipse

And the world dissolves while I'm worshiping your lips

"Hey..." She smiles sleepily at the angel next to her.

"Good morning, beautiful." He slowly stroked her cheek, like he was trying to memorize every little detail from her skin's softness to the exact placement of her freckles.

Even after last night, he still felt the need to trace every inch of her body, leaving kisses along the way till he lands at the spot she truly wants his attention with.

The angel still felt like he could taste her on his lips and it just made him want more of her. What his man wouldn't give to just ask her for another taste, for permission to pray all of his love for her down below, but he knew he had no time for it.

MC frowned before laying her hand against his chest.

Beel pulled her to his chest and stroked her hair.

"Yeah..."

He had to go home before anyone knew he was gone; before Lucifer could even suspect what he was doing now.

Father, son, and the holy ghost

Bad things happened to angels who broke the rules, especially the major ones like...falling in love with a human.

Romantic love was forbidden in the Celestial realm, especially with anyone from the other races. No love is allowed to be greater than your love for Father. His family...they wouldn't understand this; they wouldn't understand the intense love he felt for this woman or why he'd risk his life to stay with her.

If Lucifer found out...he'd keep Beel locked up in the Celestial realm. He'd keep his younger brother's secret in order to protect him, but would never let him return to his love's side.

No matter how much he loved Lucifer and his other siblings, he couldn't sacrifice MC for them. This gentle and loving human had awoken something in him, something he could never let sleep within him again.

She completes him. How could he ever let his family steal him away from her?

"When...when will you be back this time?" She asked softly from within his arms.

"I...I don't know." The man started to draw circles lightly on the back of her shoulder. "At least a few days."

MC buried her face in his chest and he kissed her hair.

If he had a choice...Beel would worship this woman for the rest of his life. He no longer wishes to pray to and revere his Father, the One who decided such a relationship with his love was too great of a sin to forgive.

How could loving someone so soft, so caring be a bad thing? The angel once tried to convince himself of it, but no longer. This woman was more angelic than even him and this love between them made him feel a fullness within him that he had never known.

He needed her like he needed air to breath and food to eat. And knew she felt the same way.

I kneel at the shrine

I eat from the vine

Drinking your wine

I'm feeling your spine

Bending to my design

And it's all mine

I'm begging you for one more crawl

I wanna feel your waterfall, fall

Beel heard the human sniffle before she pulled back from his chest.

"I'll miss you..." She said tearful. "I wish you didn't always have to leave."

"I know." He rubbed her back. "I leave so I can always come back you to though."

The woman nodded and he kissed each tear that fell from her eyes, kind eyes that have pulled him towards her since they both met.

He hated leaving her, but come hell or high water, he will always find his way back to her. Always. And he needed to because this man could not even imagine how to live without her again.

He will do his time back in the Celestial realm, praying that everything lines up for him soon to safely make his way back to her.

For now, he gave her a long, sweet kiss before leaving her bed and heading out to her balcony, where he released his wings

and flew away, to the home that no longer felt like home.

Sandalphon readied a bath for Nikolai, the scented bath smelled of lavender. There's even bubbles. The archangel was looking a bit sad as they are only doing what the heavenly father commanded.

"Hey Sandie, what's that?"

Of course he knew what it probably was, though he pointed in one direction to shift Sandalphon's attention, only to pop up on the opposite side with a bloom in his hand. He giggles, hoping his cheeriness will bring them out of their funk.

"Can we make it smell like sachiels instead of lavender? It- calms me..."
