I doubt I'll ever actually make a MCD rewrite, gods know my fixation will die down long before I'd get anything on paper or even finish rewatching the whole thing, but it's still fun to share what ideas I have come up with, so here we are!
In a hypothetical rewrite, I would change a bunch of dynamics. If I were to write mcd, a large portion of season 1 would be relationship focused. And I DON'T mean romantic necessarily, I mean building relationships, fleshing out the town, making the audience really get to know the characters and how they interact with each other.
My biggest focus is on Aph's closest friends, so here are my current ideas and hcs!
(Note here: I mention aroace dynamics, I am aware that it's a spectrum, I myself am on the spectrum, I just haven't decided how it would work with Aph herself so it's vague.)
Garroth:
Still in love with Aph
Laurance is his best friend, depends on him when he can't depend on Aph
Views Dante as a younger brother or son
Much less jealous and possessive over Aph, accepts that she may never feel the same, though is causes him heartache.
Has a habit of "adopting" people, most likely due to his past and feeling like a failure to his younger brothers. (Zenix, Dante, Levin, Brian etc)
His closest friends are Aph, Laurance and Dante. Unlikely friendship with Dale and Logan along with Cadenza
Laurance:
Likes Aph, though mostly mistakes his loyalty and fondness and genuine friendship for love. Aph is just as important to him as she is in the series, it's just not romantic love
So much less pushy. So so much less pushy.
They play flirt with Aph, as they do in the series. (Example, the table scene in s1)
Puts his feelings for her aside whenever needed. She needs a guard? He's there. She needs a friend? She's there. She needs to gossip? Girl, what'd they do this time?
Tries to gently push Garroth to do something, anything about his feelings. The pushing turns less gentle after the SK business though it's not his fault
Father/Big brother figure to Malachi.
He's closest with Aph and Garroth and Cadenza, very close with Dante as well, though they don't know each other as deeply as the others do.
Probably friends with Katelyn and Nicole as well, they spar together from time to time.
Gossips with Lucinda from time to time, they shit talk over tea
Yip probably really likes him
Dante:
Sibling like relationship with Aph
Ridiculously loyal to her
Definitely closest to her than anyone else
Had a super good relationship with Nicole, would have stayed together had their interest not clashed.
Dante would have wanted to stay in touch but Nicole needed time to herself
Started getting close to Nana after their split
Loves children, father/big brother to Malachi and Levin
An absolute goof, loses braincells with Laurance, Garroth and Aph. (All of them are super capable by themselves, absolute dumbasses together)
Aph:
Not romantically interested in any of them (I haven't decided if she's on the aroace spectrum or just not interested in men, but I just don't imagine her liking any of the guys)
Views Dante as a brother, Laurance as her best friend and Garroth as a close friend
Has always kind of felt like there was a wall between her and Garroth, couldn't explain it
Genuinely unaware of Garroth's infatuation until the ending events of s1 or then the dreams of s2
Confused over Laurance and others teasing Garroth
Made an effort to get to know Emmalyn after their bad blood died down, recognising her own issues with boundaries and respecting people's space
Unlikely friends with Emmalyn, though it gets tainted a lil after the Irene discovery
(In case not aroace: Zoey is her wife, though this could also be interpreted as platonic. In any case, they are wives and share a friendship that could only be seen as soulmates.)
Considers Laurance and Zoey her platonic soulmates, feels as though the two understand her better than anyone could or would.
Bonds with Aaron particularly well, though they have no romantic involvement.
Aaron:
Not in love with Aph
Sees his late wife in Aph along with his son in Levin and Malachi, and they end up helping him heal over time.
Forms a special type of bond with Aph, and finds himself able to rely on her much more than anyone else
Begins bonding with the others first over their shared hatred of Zane
Due to his time as a lone wolf, he struggles greatly with talking to people for a while
'Fast' friends with Dante, the two bond over the loss of their villages and family.
Surprising friends with Logan, along with Brendon and Emmalyn.
Becomes a father figure of sorts to Dante, Levin, Malachi and other youngins in the town.
Enjoys sparring with people, but begins first doing it out of necessity to be stronger, though it overtime becomes something he truly enjoys
Soft spot for kids
Ferociously protective of Aph due to their close relationship and her resemblance to his wife.
Ends up finding peace in Phoenix Drop, willing to do anything to protect it
Helps Levin figure out lord stuff with Aph.

MCD age headcanons !!
aphmau - obviously a good hundred years old but appears to be in her late 20s
garroth - 27 (ran away at 25) although i’d like to set him older but i don’t want him to be like nearly 40 by season 3 lol
laurence - 27 as well,, feels weird for him and garroth not to be the same age
dante - i actually did some research and 21 was the age i found for medieval knights finishing their training but i like to think dante graduated from the guard academy a couple years early because he was THAT good (he’s canonically jury of nine level skilled) so i set him at 20
katelyn - 24 as i like her being one of the younger ones of the cast
aaron - definitely the oldest so 30,, he became lord and had a family pretty young but after their deaths he wandered for a good few years
lucinda- 29,, this means she would be 44 in mcd season 2 but considering hyria’s like immortal or at least has the power to live for centuries i assume this would’ve been passed down to lucinda so like,, she would still look very young even in her 40s
zane - 23,, this is so that i can have the mental image of a 4 year old garroth holding his newborn baby brother 😭
vylad - was killed at 20
nana - 20
nicole - 21,, love her being slightly older than dante,, i think she would rub in the one year age difference and joke about him being a “baby”
cadenza - 25
travis - i’m not touching him because ever since i realised that he must’ve been a child during season 1 and he’s romantically entangled with katelyn so i just. don’t want to think his age. it’s weird whether i put him in his 20s or 30s (jess why did you not think about the implications of introducing travis in season 2 ༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ)
gene - died at 25
sasha - died at 24
zenix - 17 because i think it would be really tragic if he died just before he could reach adulthood

when i think about my headcanons for shadow knights, in my mind it's a lot of fun to emphasize the undead part of them, as well as how torturous the maturation process of a newly birthed shadow knight to a fully-realized one could be. the call is an idea i like to ruminate on as well.
laurance talks early on about how being a shadow knight effects his thinking. he hesitates less, and is more inclined to selfish, spiteful thought patterns. i like to think of this being the ebbing tide of the call carefully drawing in and out of the consciousness in increasingly powerful waves. it grows from tiny whispers in the back of a shadow knight's mind into a violent cacophany that boils beneath the skin with terrifying urgency to be let free the longer the knight rejects it.
as for the physical state of being a shadow knight, this is where the emphasis on the necrotic aspects i was talking about comes in. i take a lot of inspiration for my shadow knight headcanons from the novel "hell followed with us" by andrew joseph white. in that book the main character, benji, has been forcibly infected with a disease (referred to as "seraph", the book covers a lot of christian religious themes) that is slowly, over the course of weeks, turning him into a monster. it's essentially like his body is rotting into becoming something new, and the visceral, monstrous imagery and the way his slow evolution from boy to beast is described is very similar to how i picture becoming a shadow knight feels/looks.
here's some relevant excerpts from my copy of the novel for those who haven't read it. the highlighted lines are the parts most accurate to my headcanons of shadow knights (content warning for descriptions of gore):
i kind of like the idea of shadow knights (like laurance) that didn't complete their transformation ritual and/or reject the call and stay in the overworld being punished by their own body with a slower, more agonizing transformation than if they simply accepted their new undeath and killed who they're supposed to in order to reach their full potential.
however it happens though, it's never pretty. a shadow knight's "true" form (when they activate their powers) reeks of sulfur and death, when they grow in size it sounds just as sickening as it looks, spasming limbs and ripping flesh with the deafening noise of crunching bone and tearing ligaments. smoke and something like ichor both pour from their nose and mouth. if irene is light, life, clear water, and cool, solid quartz and marble and gemstones then a servant of shad would, of course, embody the opposite. i suppose by that description you could also draw a comparison between shad/shadow knights and the desolation/the lightless flame from the magnus archives, if anybody is familiar with that show as well.
anyways im rambling, i just needed to word vomit all these ideas since i wanna talk more about my headcanons on here rather than just character analysis posts lmao

I firmly believe shadow knights should have been cooler. I am extremely biased in this thought so IF I were ever to make a rewrite, these are some things I think I'd put in it.
They would be immune to the things that had killed them. Yes, technically SKs do not die, they just go back to the nether. However, to get them to go back to the nether you have to 'kill' them in any other way then how they died.
They would have had more powers than just incredible strength or whatever magicks they had before the died. Though if they already had magic, they would simply get an amplified version of said power.
They all use different types of weapons. Like, think about a shadow knight with a battle axe, or a scythe.
In the castle and the uniforms, there would be more religious imagery showing that they are loyal to Shad and the armor would be different depending on class and level within the shadow knights.
Speaking of, to climb through the ranks, I believe they would have 'challenges' that higher up shadow nights prepare that allows the up and coming SKs to take to rise in ranks.
Different Sks have different roles. They have mages, sages, archers, or servant. Either based on rank or simply an assigned role by higher ranked shadow knights.
They need more monstrous features. Give me claws, fangs, blacked out eyes with red pupils, maybe even a snake like tongue thats long. I can't think of more...
Thats all i got. Okay bye
