okay so you just put this in your most recent post so now i’m really curious, what are your thoughts on kuron? what specifically makes you say he’s a good iteration of shiro? /gen

oooou okay thank you for asking. i covered this a little bit in this essay here, but i'll sum up the most important bit from that essay (in relation to this topic):

"Lastly — and this turned out to be less relevant to the essay than I expected, but I do want to go over it a tad — is Shiro’s tie to humanity. I mentioned two important points: Shiro’s connection to mortality makes him the most intimate with his humanity out of all the characters, and he is undoubtedly the flattest character of them all. That is, if you don’t consider his clone to be part of his character.

But I’m begging you to reconsider. Reconsider, perhaps, who the clone is — Haggar had pure access to Shiro for a year, you remember. His thoughts, his dreams, his mannerisms, his priorities, his body. Even him at his most human, his most deranged, his most scared. She had Shiro then. She had Shiro when he had nothing to look forward to. She had Shiro when he hurt his crew to make sure they would live, at direct cost to himself.

She stripped him of his humanity — his connection to his own mortality. She took his illness from him. And who, then, did she return to the team? Who was clone? Shiro, mostly. The clone was happy to play with the team. The clone was clever. The clone believed, fully, that he was Shiro, only he was angrier and meaner, a little, and less capable of shoving down his own pain. Shiro, stripped of his tie to humanity and mortality, stripped of his compulsive need to be strained and stressed and the one everyone else can rely on, the Role rather than the Person, is emotional. He has flaws and outbursts. He can’t manage his own pain. He is is cruelest to the one person on the team — Lance — who canonically reminds him closest of himself.

Shiro, in the purest form that Haggar can make him, is flawed and self-hating. That is where our love for him comes. Not the man who pushes himself down at the same time as he sacrifices his personality to be someone for others, but the man who is struggling and can’t keep it locked down. That’s where it comes from."

so! what does this mean.

shiro, as a character, does not get to choose and form his own identity. first he is the Garrison Poster Boy -- and while he is a pilot, an explorer, and happy to do both of those things, he is uncomfortable with (largely lance's) hero worship. he both a) doesn't believe he deserves it, and b) is not happy in that role. we see it in the "blam blam blam" scene -- he is trapped in the 'hero' role because he is trapped in a role of Perfection, and he is not perfect, and it grates on him. second he is the Champion -- and while he did force himself to be the Champion by injuring the Holts, it is a sacrifice. being a sacrifice is not the same as choosing a role. third, he is the Paladin of the Black Lion (not the Black Paladin, for deeper analysis on my thoughts there please read this essay and maybe this one too honestly) -- he tries to escape that role from the very beginning. i know i keep pushing yall towards the essay but i genuinely do discuss shiro's role in it, but i'll reiterate:

"...from the very beginning, he set up a replacement for himself.

Doesn’t that strike anyone else as odd? I haven’t seen the show in five years, and I don’t plan on rewatching, but I do remember that every moment with Shiro almost had this underlying tension. The closest thing I have to canon off the top of my head is the Handbook (which I had to stop reading because they did everyone SO dirty there, even though some of it was honestly pretty funny), which was released in S2, and even that incredibly early canon talked about Keith replacing Shiro!

From the very beginning, Shiro was planning an out to his role. He knew it was not meant for him. He did the role well, but it was not his to do."

shiro does not want that fucking role. every single second we see him on screen, as Shiro Original, he is shouldering a burden. he is being someone he does not want to be. not to give voltron any credit, but don't you think it's interesting that he, as a character, comes out to the audience as queer when he is...free from those roles? when he is no longer the Garrison Poster Boy (i.e. lance stops the hero worship), no longer the Champion (haggar is defeated), no longer the Paladin of the Black Lion (keith is now the Black Paladin)...we see him come out. we see him, as it is often called, "be true to himself". to me, this signals that he is finally free from playing someone he is not, and interestingly, this came after kuron -- after he maybe got to be something he truly was.

aside from the more abstract analysis, shiro is deeply, deeply traumatized! it is inane to expect him to be the same person he was. why on earth would he have the same patience during/post war as pre-war? he knows now that hesitance gets people killed. if he had hesitated to hurt matt, matt would have died. if he hesitates out on the field, people die. patience yields focus, sure, but he hasn't had time for patience in god knows how long. any patience he has is, if it has not already torn, wearing thin. lance's lightheardness, although important, is bound to make him snap, especially because shiro used to be the lighthearted one -- if he was still the lighthearted one, people would die. on his conscious. his snappiness at lance, while inappropriate and damaging, makes total sense. it comes from a place of a) deep self-hatred/mistrust and b) trauma.

to quote myself again -- "shiro, in the purest form haggar can make him, is flawed and self-hating". take away shiro's roles, take away his masks, take away any of his responsibilities that have shaped his life for him -- who is he? would he be angry (like kuron)? would he be hurting (like kuron)? would he be vulnerable (like kuron)? would he, for the first time, reach out and ask for help (like kuron)?

i think he would.

AU!Angel Keith - Keith is a seraphim with a human like form (but with ram legs/eyes on his body and a long white mullet/white eyelashes) who his crazy interested in humans, talking about them for hours and getting judged by other angels (He also sees lance from earth and gets all embarrassed by seeing him, that’s the main reason he goes down to earth in his “human form)

AU! 80’s Keith and 2000’s lance - Keith is from the 80’s (AND HAS A MORE FLUFFY MULLET OH MY GOD) and Lance is from the 2000’s (he’s a big fan of Beyoncé too), but accidentally get teleported to the 90’s together and meet, they’re judging each other hardcore for what music they listen to + their outfits (Walkman VS iPod..)

AU!Sweeney Todd - Keith is Sweeney Todd, while lance is Ms Lovett, Pidge is Tobias/toby!! Big fan of this one because I’ve had it since I’ve watched the broadway version and the movie, love the soundtrack too

AU!RENT - Keith is Roger, Lance is Mimi, Lotor is Benjamin, Hunk and pidge is Angel and Tom (and sadly they’re shipped together erm), Romelle and allura are Joanne and Maureen, Shiro is Roger (Keith’s) ex (but in this au; he’s his brother, not his girlfriend like in the musical) and one of my galra ocs is Mark!! Technically, mark would’ve been lance cause he dated allura, but then again.. klance..

and these are all in my mind baybee, WOO

[we're gonna ignore how long it took me to remember i didnt finish this post. but its done now so--]

I've found that the general reaction to Wolf in Exile, is about the same as the reaction to Uldren in canon.

When Amanda finds out that Crow used to be Uldren, she gets angry and lashes out at him, even when he's not there. Before Crow got his memories back, he'd hear about the things Uldren did and would be disgusted yet pitied him for the path that must've brought the prince to do so. When Crow first finds out who he used to be, he struggles with it; angry and refusing to accept it while making threats based on the events he's rejecting (which, in Exile, would be Crow's view of Wolf after he realizes the position he's in and before Cayde breaks and tells him about what happened in the Prison)

On another note, time to correct/build on some older Exile lore:

I know the first mention I made of Nimbus was in a joke post about "What if the entire problem of TFE was isolated to the vanguard" and I was talking about how Nimbus hears Wolf's side of the story first, but I've decided to keep that actually! Since Wolf does end up getting unexiled before Final Shape (haven't figured out exactly when - I... haven't been able to play very much, so I am open to ideas here), I was thinking that it'd be a mixture of Crow, Osiris, Saint and Nimbus wearing Zavala down (on top of The Guilt TM) that would finally bust that wall down and Crow would go drag them back to the City. So basically, we have even MORE character conflicts!

Also: The reason TFE isn't just a Vangurd Problem, is... Wolf is making it everyone's problem (and the Vanguard is trying to keep tabs on them) by being Extra Violent. Not to mention that, before Exile, the Red Legion already wasn't having a good time with Wolf. And now it's even worse, so I imagine there are some attempts there to suppress Wolf or. generally get them Out Of The Picture (which fail. horribly) I imagine, during Chosen, there's some Battlegrounds that are straight up interrupted by Wolf, too. But gonna have to flesh that out some more In short: I think the enemies of the City rather preferred it when the Vanguard had some hand in Wolf's business (making Vanguard Pawn taunts seem a bit more fear-filled than they were in canon)

And, there was an ask from Eternal where I said that Crow tells Wolf that Cayde's alive was on the second meeting, but that has since been made big time impossible. So, I want to say that the two are at least somewhat into Friend Territory when Crow complains some about Cayde, since Crow wasn't sure how much of a sore spot he was and didn't want to risk it. Crow does get a message from Cayde through, so Wolf knows for sure that Cayde is alive before the Cayde Short takes place (I KNOW i havent posted it yet please forgive me. someone needs to take this AU away from me) but it still takes a hot minute to get the two in the same room.

My initial view of Caiatl was that she'd have either an "ehhhh" view of Wolf, or have her thing with Calus be in her way. But, actually, I don't think she would. At the end of Lightfall, she was so far over him, and too dedicated to protecting her people to really care about what happened to Calus, as he had every chance to redeem himself and just dug his grave further. But its her view of protecting her people that I think would sway her in favor Wolf. In the future, sometime post-Lightfall, Caiatl's point of view of Wolf is what turns Zavala's mind and he convinces Ikora to agree to unexiling Wolf. Crow, Osiris, and Saint were already arguing in Wolf's favor (though in all their own ways) but Caiatl, who had Saladin and Zavala in her ears about Wolf, decided... I think I put it best in the Chaos Box Doc: If she can see past Calus and his crimes and turn to protect her people; if Saint can see past the Fallen to protect the Eliksni and the City; if Zavala can see past Ghaul and trust her with his own— Then he can see past the Prison and take the risk. also her name means "all may not go as it needs to go"! not really relevant to my point but i feel like she'd say that to Zavala

I think I've landed on Saint's view of Wolf being heavily reliant on his faith in them throughout his life (due to the paradox) and Osiris trusting them. Saint isn't sure of whether or not they're really guilty, but they gave him (and many, many others, in his mind) a second chance, and he feels they deserve it. And if they truly are innocent, then he's got a bone to pick with a Queen's Wrath...

Still don't know what to with The Grave though. I mean, it wouldn't hurt anything for Wolf not to see it. Either that, or have it so there's not a speech? Or just wait until We've figured out how exactly Wolf dies and where the story goes afterwards, and then work on the Grave? Idk man there are way too many things in this AU for me to keep 100% track of--

*Deep breathe* Do i ever!!!!!!

I actually have an unneccessarily long post in my drafts i am typing out talking about Kuron, (Kuron babygirl please get help😭😭), but the entire thing can boiled down to this- Kuron is someone who desperately wants even needs a semblence of control in his life. Like the entire possession by Haggar and than merging with Shiro? Finding out you are a clone created to replace this guy to destroy the team inside out and be a weapon? Everything you used to think about yourself was a straight up lie? That a recipe of a whole bunch of issues baby!

This man has lost any and every form of agency since the moment he was created. He isnt even sure that he can trust himself or his memories anymore because how can you when you are literally created to be someone else? He doubts every thought he has, every first instinct, every want, because he is never sure if that is him being himself or him being Shiro/controlled by Haggar.

What he is sure about is how angry, hurt, and betrayed he feels by his friends. He is especially hates Keith (who effectively killed him and is the one putting the most emphasis on him being Shiro), Allura (who put Shiro in his body), and Shiro (literally face of like so much of his trauma, the entire "evil clone who replaced me" shit he talks about while in HIS body, and just being merged and locked in his mind was just not a great experience, 0/10 will not recommend) (he also hates Haggar so much, he will throw hands). And this anger is pretty much a crutch to him, because it is the one thing that kept him from fully merging, and is pretty much an assertion of his identity.

He has this weird complicated feeling about Lance, cause well Lance is the one who saved him and he is very grateful for that, but also he has been nursing that hurt for a really long time and just has a really hard time letting it go and he just doesnt trust Lance, he wants to but he really cant. The problems between these two can be solved with few honest conversations because both parties are more willing to listen to each other, but problem is Lance is kinda in a coma and Losing it which is a major L.

He is also trying to find what to do and who he is. He did not expect to survive or get out or get his own body but now that he is out he just doesnt know what to do with this second chance. He's going through motions, trying out new things, anything and everything that just gives him a purpose or something, anything

He wants nothing to do with Shiro, so anything resembling Shiro has to go. He is getting tattoos, piercings, changing his whole aesthetic. Space? Cosmos? The fuck is that? He is Not Interested, no matter how cool as fuck it is, no sir, absolutely Not/sarc. He is doing things Shiro would hate which consequently he also lowkey hates but says he likes it through gritted teeth. These things range from reading classic Lit to getting into bar fights at 3am and it is just "Really! It Is So Fun!!! Shiro is a Massive Wuss and a Little Bitch for Missing Out while i am cool as fuck 😎😎😎😎😎😰- i mean 😎😎😎😎😎😎. Love having individuality and making my own choices under my own violation that have nothing to do with Takashi Shirogane, a guy whom i absolutely Do Not Care about and has Nothing to Do with This or Me" (dont tell him that by doing things against what Shiro would have done he is still letting him influence his decisions, he has to figure that out himself)

So to summerize- Kuron my guy is having a midlife crisis, an identity crisis, a what to do with your life crisis, a teenage rebellion phase all at the same time, which is a real Bruh moment of him.

Have you read Shiro’s second character quest translated on housamo.wiki? That’s like canon material to add to Shiro and Shuichi’s relationship (ShuiShiro?). I’m not sure if it proves the “making each other worse” dynamic but it adds a little bit more to Shiro’s character like confirming the whole escapism thingy.

I got this train of thought about how ryuki really should have had women kamen riders in the main show but then started thinking about how it could never be yui because what shiro wants is for her to live he wants everyone else to fight so she can live not her fight for herself (also because then she would know the truth and that would lead to her having a choice in if she wants to live or not *cries*)

I'm having a really wild time being unemployed bc after working through burnout and neglecting and harming myself for 2 years, on one hand I'm having mental and life problems (dysphoria, body dysmorphia, arranged marriage, control, and the usual depression of course) unforeseen since I was 15 and it's making me crazy, but on the other hand my brain is literally overflowing with writing creativity (...also like when I was 15). I barely engaged in any hobbies since my last year of university and all my documents that were previously collecting dust just got +20 pages each. it's so wild I am having the best and slightly worst time. Keith isn’t interested in love (until he realizes he can date you) BUT FOR THE MOMENT HE’S NOT!

Both of you are still determining when you got close as well. You protected him once in battle, and since then, you’ve just stuck together.

And he of course protects you when he can because he's grateful you saved his life.

So you guys became friends,,, that was news to Lance btw.

Slowly you let each other into your lives, and now you train together often.

You were never ‘better’ than him at fighting (you actually just made yourself lose sometimes) and Keith sometimes ‘lost’ to make you just a little happy (little did he know hehe)

But today? Oh, you weren’t playing that’s for sure. He was super confused at first, then he was impressed, and then he was turned on. Which is fair because you looked straight out of a magazine, the ‘hot’ sweaty and perfectly messy hair.

When did you get so hot?

And boom. He felt he was on earth again because realization hit him like a TRAIN.

You were his age, and you were hot, and you could totally be a thing. And wtf is wrong with Keith? He's never thought of you like this.

Yeah, so that’s that.

And then he gets all awkward around you, and you guys haven't had a training session together since then. He always conveniently has something to do when you try to ask him.

Goddamnit.

Lance

You’ve been friends with him since the good old garrison days.

You grew to like the dork’s presence

You’ve always known he’s flirty, that’s just Lance.

Getting you flowers (sometimes), flirting with you in the hallways, and even when you’re fighting with the galra.

You always rolled your eyes, scoffed at him, or brushed him off but today?

Violence

You were so ready to mess with him too

You woke up with mischief on your mind

And mischief you created

Lance was flirting with you while fighting the galra

And he expected you to react normally but nooooo

You flirted back

“Shut it.” is all Lance says for like 10 minutes

Hunk

Hunk misses earth

So much

He stops talking as much and wanders around the castle

He didn't think anyone noticed

But you did

And you felt SO bad for him

So when you stop at the mall to get teleduv lenses you seek away

And get the closest possible ingredients to make his favorite treat

Ice cream sandwiches (real)

You’re testing weird white heavy cream adjacent substances and so much more all for him

You might get sick

Oh well

You sneak back and he gives you a weird “Where were you?” look,

But you just ignore

And then you slave away in the kitchen and finally end up with something that’s ice cream sandwich adjacent

“What’re you making?”

“Ice cream sandwiches”

“Oh for the team? You should have let me help”

“No”

Confused hunk

“It’s just for us” and you hold up an ice cream sandwich for him

His face LIGHTS up and he gladly accepts it

Then you guys sit on the floor and just talk about life and how both of you feel

All night.

It's freaking adorable

He realises how much he adores you, and how he absolutely loves you and all of your little quirks

It doesn’t even matter when the ice cream starts melting, he’d much rather focus on you and talk. Only occasionally taking bites when you do

Pidge

Pidge always knew you were datable

And an amazing person

But she started falling for you when the paladins were trying to tell her to not go find Matt

You stepped in a stood up for her, gaining Shiro’s support.

And then when she was ready to leave she saw you putting your stuff into your lion

“You don’t think I’ll leave you alone, do you?”

She knows it’s because someone will need to be there for her in case Matt is gone

But she doesn’t complain

It’s a silent brewing of love and appreciation

And she’s so grateful to have you in her life

Shiro

When Keith was confused and stuck without Shiro, you stepped up and found him

He was surprised at first

But you took care of him and helped him out as he got better

You were there for him to lean on. Always.

Literally and figuratively

His appreciation turned into adoration and then his adoration turned into pure, genuine love

Once he was fully healthy again

He’d try to pay it back to you

By protecting you when you went against any threats

ESPECIALLY when you were out of your lion

And then it just becomes a thing where you protect each other

It’s adorable

He loves you and he protects you

And vice versa

scenario: in an act of saving ones friend, reader was quick to protect their crush from sudden death.

a/n: i'm not sure how to feel about this, i feel like the ending sucks and most of the characters are OOC :(

He met you the same way he met Coran and Allura. Pure accident. Lance caught Allura who fell out of the tube, and Keith caught you,

He noticed the marks on your and Allura's cheeks and when he touched you, your ocean blue markings glowed.

He wasn't sure if it was his fault, or it was just yourself who caused them to glow.

When Keith caught you, you were still asleep, but the sudden feeling of someones warm body made contact with your cold one. Your eyes fluttered open to be greeted with a jacket.

A red and white jacket.

Your arms were held by black gloved hands, and when you got a good view of your holder, purple eyes met yours and you suddenly screamed. Pushing him away and raising an arm into the air.

Keith groaned, hitting the floor with a thud, but soon froze and raised his head that follwed a water blade that was pointed at it throat.

"Who are you!" You demanded an answer. However the by didn't have enough time to answer as you shouted again,

"What are you doing in the castle?"

"Where is King Alfor?"

You asked, looking up and around the Castle walls.

"Where's....."

"Allura!"

Your smile formed on your lips, noticing your Altean friend stand by another boy you've never seen before.

Keith watched as you hugged the other Altean. For some reason he couldn't keep his eyes off you. Suddenly, another tube rose from the ground, and soon all eyes were on a man with orange hair, and a bushy orange mustache.

Ever since that day, Keith's curiousity for your waterbending abilites grew...and so did your love. However, you had no idea if Keith liked your back?

Does he even notice you?

Sure, there are times he's asking about your powers, but when you told him you don't fight, or have any interest in fighting, he's kinda been dying down on being curious. Almost learned all about you are your powers.

The others adored your powers, and loved it when you showed off to them what you can do. Keith would just stand by and watch, not complimentimng at all.

You don't blame him...you don't hold any purpose then being Allura's childhoodfriend. The other explained he's just like that, and he's not really a people person. However, you can't help but think your not good enough for him.

Timeskip to a Galra attack on a planet you've been visiting. To think this could have been a break from all the Galra attacks, but NO. Voltron has yet to be form, but the Lions were set free and ready to be piloted by their Paladins.

Of course, you were left in the castle with Shiro and Coran, for now Allura was now the Blue Paladin, Lance was the Red Paladin, and Keith was the leader of Voltron.

Nothing changed with you.

"KEITH!" You suddenly jumped hearing Lance's loud shout to his rival, "Come on, man! I had that!" You took a deep inhale to calm your nerves.

"They were coming at you at three different sides, you didn't have it!" Keith retorted.

You sighed, hearing both Keith and Lance argue.

"Out of all the times you guys fight, this is not the time!" Pidge shouted over coms, barely dodging a laser blasted from a Galra cruiser. "Hunk! Jet on your 6!"

It was chaos out there, and all you can do over here is watch while Shiro attempted to order everyone around. However, ever since Keith became the leader, he found it a bit hard.

You wanted to go out there and help, but Shiro kept you back, not knowing if you'll even make it a foot out there without a lion, or even a ship!

As the chaos around you roared, you looked at your hands. You kept thinking about things you could do to help your team, yet nothing seemed to light up.

In your train of thought, Keith's sudden scream caused you to look back up to his lion get hit with a laser beam and fall to the dirt. A dirt cloud covered the area of his lion.

"KEITH!" Everyone shouted over coms.

Your heart felt like it got stabbed seeing Keith's lion hit the ground na dnot emerge from the dust.

Come on, Keith. You whispered under your breath. Come on! You felt your stomach twist in turn from nervousness. No one around can help because there all pinned down from the Galra fighter jets.

You squeezed your hands, watching the screen in front of you. You felt your lips quiver, and thats when you snapped.

Coran noticed your sudden form, and looked over to you and was about to ask what's wrong, but he was too late when you suddenly darted out of the control room.

"Y/N!" Shiro shouted out in frustrastion.

Once your feet hit the dirt, you ran faster then you ever could below the battle. Destroyed Galra jets fell from the sky, causing you to use your waterbending abilites to push you forward toward Keith's lion. Meanwhile, the ones already on the ground? You just jumped over to ran around.

"Y/N, you are going to get yourself kil-" You shut your ear communicater off, your running only increased.

Upon reacing the Red lion, you touched its large leg as it started to stand up. However, it was really shaky, almost like it was about to fall again.

"Keith! Keith- can you hear me?" You turned your com on, and your heart relaxed when you heard his voice.

"Augh...augh..Y/N? Yeah, Yeah, I can hear you!"

You smiled softly, knowing he's aiive, but possibly ingured due to the movement of his lion.

Just as soon things seemed okay, and Keith can get back into battle, Pidge's voice rang though your com...and she didn't sound happy..more like..

"Y/N! KEITH! Move, NOW!"

Your eyes widedned as you felt the presence of something coming for you at a high speed. Not wanting Keith to get more hurt then he already is, you raised your hands up from your sides.

The water from the river around the planet rose quickly, and merged into one around you. A large ball of water was soon thrown toward the Galra jet that was flying low toward you, and with a spin of your heel the ball of water smashed against the ship.

The blast you threw was hard and heavy, the fighter jet flew backwards, hitting the dirt and exploding.

Heavy breaths left your mouth as you relaxed your arms back to your side, the area around you wet and cold.

"Y/N.." Keith called out for you. With a soft and tired smile you circle back around to face Keith's lion that stood over you. You looked at the creature in the eye and chuckled,

"Talk me after you formed Voltron...and after I take a nap..."

You sighed, your knees giving out. However, the Red Lion caught you in it's mouth and hovered over the trees, placing you down in a safer place in the trees around the river you used as a weapon.

"Thank you..."
