all hate to tiktok for taking 'having a space to more openly and actively talk about different cultures' to mean 'cultures are NOT to be shared and we must be vigilantly defensive of our cultures for fear of appropriation, a word that can be applied to any multicultural interaction'. like of course cultural appropriation is a very real problem but ive seen with the access to global multicultural conversation that tiktok provides it's made people TERRIFIED to even interact with cultures other than their own for fear of 'doing it wrong'. like at some point you have to acknowledge that in the real world of the great outdoors, the majority of people are eager to SHARE their cultures. yes there are ignorant questions and biases but also... how do you think those things get unlearnt? i dont understand how deciding that multiculturalism is an elephant in the room instead of a normal thing that should just be talked about and lived with is supposed to benefit anyone? and kids on tiktok are CONVINCED that it's a time bomb of a conversation to have and therefore must be avoided at all costs but like. people generally LOVE their home and their culture and are PROUD of it and want to share it. how have we made it so that showing genuine interest and a desire to understand something so integral to a person's identity is now feared and borderline demonised?

Suddenly you notice something in the corner of your eyes. You turn to take a better look; it's a person, with some drawing equipment out, just... watching you? They smile, turning their drawing pad and despite the distance you recognise immediately a drawing of yourself. You're not sure why that made you feel so unsettled, but next time you go for a walk you decide to go to a park a bit further away. You still feel watched"

And here's Iris! They are a bit of an underground artist, known only in certain circles and in hushed tones. If you've met her it's hard to forget; their presence, while rarely pleasant, is quite... Persistent. She likes to choose her "muses" from crowds, parks or cafes - often, you won't find out you've been chosen until you find in your mail a portrait of yourself and a note with some weirdly personal information you're pretty sure you've never told anyone. After that, the muse will start finding those drawings everywhere; in their bag, their house, even at the workplace. The drawings become progressively more unsettling, showing you while you sleep or eat or even shower. They will start feeling like nowhere is safe anymore, any and every second they breathe is being observed and recreated on paper. It's also quite difficult escaping Iris' attention; it's faster and safer to just... Wait it out, until they pass to a new muse.

Anyway! When they aren't terrorising someone you can probably find them at the Hermit Caffé, bothering Meme

Their interactions are quite confusing, it's difficult to say if they are fighting or flirting very aggressively, and getting a straight answer out of either is a lost cause on any topic, and especially this one. Meme is notorious for changing their answer every time you ask them something, and Iris has the propensity to go off on vaguely off-topic and convoluted rants while talking to her.

I think I'm gonna start an art reblog day. So many artists depend on reblogs so people can see their art. I normally don't reblog art because I, too, am an artist, and I don't want it to take away from the art that I post, but if I have a specific reblog day and don't post any of my own stuff that day, I think it will work. So maybe this has to do with having listened to TMA when it was relatively close to being finished, at least in that it was properly done by the time I caught up to season 5 so I didn't actually have to wait to keep listening to new episodes, I could breeze through as many as I wanted in one sitting.

Meanwhile with Protocol I'm actually listening as each episode is released and I have to wait for a new episode to keep listening.

Anyway I think the point I'm getting at is this is actually the first podcast I've ever experienced in real time and not after it'd already been mostly finished, so the feeling I get every time I get to listen to a new ep is far more visceral and intense than what I'm used to with previous podcasts.

I'm certain I'm not the only person whose Protocol experience is going this way, but, on god, this show has me in a death grip like no other, possibly even more so than TMA did.

I wish I knew specifically what it is about this time around that is hitting on things that properly unnerve and freak me out, whereas TMA didn't even come close to making me all that uncomfortable beyond a meager handful of times. Protocol, on the other hand, has whipped out banger after banger and I am so goddamn unsettled in ways that I don't even have words to describe.

I am both terrified and excited to find out what else is in store.

So in absolutely BIZARRE news I have somehow reached 501 followers!! Which is A) kriffing insane, this is all the fault of that stupid post that blew up, and B) so sweet! I'm honored so many of you want me on your dash, and that you've stuck around this long. So thank you guys!!

I have a celebration planned for this one, but unfortunately my next couple weeks are INSANELY busy. So I'm probably gonna celebrate at the beginning of June sometime-- let me know if you want to be tagged, and if not, keep an eye out!

Listennn, having more thoughts about Marc's inability to match Steven in his openness and self-expression because of his learned behavior of deeming it as wrong and how it ties in with how he later views Jake.

Marc conforms to cope, with suppressing parts of his identity related to his autism, his DID, his trauma. He masks, he hides, he lies, despite it all taking even more of a toll on him. But you watch episode 5 and Steven's effects on Marc are...so obvious.

There's this innate vulnerability he has around Steven, both in his physicality and his emotions. Without even really trying, Steven is already teaching Marc self-love, just like how Layla teaches him more secure attachment styles.

But really, Marc doesn't fully understand how bad he was/is at hiding and being chronically, viscerally, utterly, compulsively incapable of allowing himself peace until. He meets Jake. Then there's this slow but violent realization on Marc's end that that thing he's had to live with all his life? Where all his love for the people around him never quite made its way back into him intrinsically? Where self-worth was always contrived at best and a Gordian's knot at worst? Where cynicism was always reaching for his ankles, ready to hold him back from the very notion of latching onto faith?

Jake has it all, but so much worse.

They are cut from an eerily similar cloth. But moral relativism aside, Marc is adamant to help Jake reach that place that Steven helped him reach. Where his intrinsic self-worth is no longer shrouded in the words of his abuser, and he understands what it means to have objective value, and to someday sincerely believe he is a nonderivatively good person.
