Whats your favorite Non-MLP Media?
Would it crossover well with MLP?
SPACE BATTLESHIP FUCKING YAMATO
Tumblr media
of course the horribly americanized version i watched was called “Star Blazers”. but as an adult i have watched a sub.
now i am not nearly that old. i had a very sheltered, homeschooled childhood. so most of the tv i watched was tv from my dad’s childhood that he burned onto dvds. which meant a lot of loonytoons and fucking gijoe. and the old astroboy. not the old old astroboy, just the old one. my favorite thing we were allowed to watch was star blazers.
it’s an old as balls scifi anime. the earth gets nuked by aliens until there’s only a few million humans living underground. some different alien sends down spaceship blueprints and says if you come pick it up, i have a cool machine that will turn your planet back to normal. so humans build a spaceship out of a sunken wwii ship and travel to the other side of the galaxy fighting aliens the whole way.
it’s full of a bunch of cool spaceship fights and military porn that kinda? counts as? dieselpunk? the whole story resonates with me so awesomely. and the characters are stuck in my brain. even tho it’s a bit misogynistic. i wanted to BE the female lead. long before i knew what that meant. and they went hard with the music.
sadly, fandom spaces for this show are full of military diehards, and the sort of people who collect figurines of the characters half naked. either that or they’re just super old. so i’ve pretty much given up on having any kind of fandom experience
i do not recommend this show lol. i’ve revisited it several times and it simply is not as good as i remembered. don’t get me wrong i still love it, but i love it the way i love an aging pet who sleeps most of the day
you know what is as good as i remember it being is THE REBOOT
Tumblr media
2199 is everything i remember the original being as a child. its so cool and fun and the characters are amazing and they fixed a lot of the misogyny. and its beautiful and the music is amazing and i love it so much and honestly yeah i do recommend this. if you like apocalypse scifi
my little pony might honestly be the first time my siblings and i were allowed to just watch tv. and of course i got a smart phone around that time too so that was the end of the TV famine. before that it really was just stuff that dad had burned on DVDs. There was like a year or two that we sort of watched Nickelodeon? But there were several shows we weren’t allowed to watch and we stopped getting cable after that year or two was over. also, there were several Disney TV shows that we could watch on the family computer like Zack and Cody and Kim Possible but I don’t think we were actually allowed to watch those? And they didn’t have all of the show online.
Space Battleship yamato is followed closely by Nichijou, and the Homestarrunner cartoons. to which i owe the majority of my sense of humor. i recommend nichijou to anyone. it’s only one season long and its non stop quality. it’s an absurdist comedy from japan. i recommend homestarrunner, but its much harder to get started on that. there’s just so much of it and im not even fully convinced ive managed to see all of it. various factors such as the death of flash have made it hard to access. kinda like homestuck
as for how well they would crossover with my little pony, I will MAKE them crossover with my little pony. I honestly want to do more crossovers. I’ve already done Star Wars and Star Trek, but I’d like to do some more of my favorites. And even more stuff that I like. Like let’s get some girly shows on there too. I really want to do strawberry shortcake. I also think it would be fun to do kim possible or Winx club. my sibling actually designed a bunch of ponified Percy Jackson characters, and I’ve been wanting to draw those. god if i weren’t about to head to work

Last song: "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" by Talking Heads has been my latest major earworm. I just made it the new opening of the playlist I’ve been slowly building for the BBEG of my D&D campaign. “Take a look at these hands! The hands of a government man”
Favorite Color: I genuinely loved the red that @somaisbatman picked but for the sake of individuality I'll say the type of pink/lilac/violet-y color that clouds take on at sunset
Currently Watching: umpteenth rewatch of Twin Peaks: The Return with friends. I also started Nichijou with friends recently, which is hysterical
Last Movie: A few: Rewatched The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, probably a top 10-or-20 all-timer for me, since I had been thinking about the late great Michael Gambon; Patlabor 2 (without any context for the rest of the franchise), which was really interesting and beautifully animated and made me want to get mechapilled; and The World's Greatest Sinner, a film directed by and starring notorious Hollywood hanger-on Timothy Carey, about the meteoric political rise of a former insurance salesman who wants to empower the American people with immortality. To quote @impish-lion, it is a glimpse into the mind of your father's weirdest friend. He also compared the protagonist to Euron Greyjoy in that he barely registers as a human being, mainlines a Mystery Juice definitely illicit in nature, and fancies himself a god
Currently Reading: Too many books. I'm making my way through The Lord of the Rings for the first time, which, y'know, it's great. Fevre Dream by George R.R. Martin is pretty good so far, and it's interesting to see earlier stages for a lot of ideas that get more fleshing out in ASOIAF. Also by GRRM we have A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which like LOTR has taken me embarrassingly long to pick up. I'm slowly inching through The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu, which I'm determined to finish because I really liked its predecessor, even if this trilogy is a little out of my usual wheelhouse. Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin is great even if I need to put it down for a few weeks at a time. And lastly Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon, at whose midpoint I've been stalled for about a year. I'm loving it, I've just seen the movie so many times, and also as you can see I've got a lot on my plate already lol
Sweet/spicy/savory: Spicy
Relationship status: Single (not working super actively to change this, but I am talking very casually to people on the apps, more to feel Desired than anything. at least one connection seems promising so We Shall See. I just want to kiss cool queer people lol)
Current Obsessions: I'm in a bit of an obsession-rut, barring like, the actually obsessive things I do, i.e. washing my hands over and over lmao. I really want to rewatch the The Terror for Halloween season, that will definitely become an obsession if I do. I've also been playing lots of Baldur's Gate III but I wouldn't say that's at Obsession Status.
Last googled: the release date for Killers of the Flower Moon. I'm busy that weekend :(
Currently working on: My video editing reel. The next arc of my D&D campaign (no idea when I'll actually be running it, but I feel really confident that I've basically got it all mapped out. I've been running it for several years now and much as I'll miss it when it's finished, I am incredibly happy to wrap it up soon lol). I've also taken to writing creatively more in my free time recently which has been nice. EDIT: oh, also my mental health/gender/interpersonal relationships but that’s not Currently so much as Perennially lol
tagging my irl friend @impish-lion even though I know him pretty well. also tagging mutuals @visenyaism/@soupseason, @moss-sprouted and @pigeonz/@melasshai. Nobody do this if you don't want to lol

Hi, i just followed, could i ask what animes you like? Any good one you reccomend?
cracks knuckles
OH BOY DO I HAVE RECOMMENDATIONS
Do you like fantasy and adventure? Check out Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Made in Abyss (CW for some uncomfortable child nudity), Wolf’s Rain, Re:Zero, and Hunter x Hunter.
Like action? I recommend most of those above shows as well, but also Symphogear, Mob Psycho 100, Attack on Titan, Fate/Stay Night (Specifically the ones by studio Ufotable), 86 Eighty-Six, Akudama Drive, My Hero Academia, and Vivy Fluorite Eyes’ Song.
More a fan of pure comedy? Your first picks should be Nichijou, Komi-san Can’t Communicate, The Demon Girl Next Door, and Kaguya-Sama
Do you prefer heavy dramas with lots of feels? Check out March Comes in Like a Lion, Violet Evergarden, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Vinland Saga, A Silent Voice, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Wolf Children, and The Heike Story.
Want to laugh and cry at the same time? Take a look at Angel Beats, Clannad, and basically anything else written by Jun Maeda.
Are you more into romance? Then go for Kimi ni Todoke, Toradora, Chuunibyou, Ore Monogatari, Teasing Master Takagi-san, and Bloom Into You
Or perhaps you enjoy slow-paced, atmospheric storytelling that’s more about setting an atmosphere and exploring themes than telling an ongoing story? If so, I recommend Mushishi and Girls’ Last Tour.
Perhaps you’re a fan of stories grounded in real life, often with a coming-of-age element? Then make sure to put Hibike Euphonium, A Place Further Than the Universe, The Aquatope on White Sand, Yama no Susume, and K-On on your list.
Do you like dark, head-trippy shows that explore complex and challenging themes with brain-bending stories? Take a look at Neon Genesis Evangelion, Flip Flappers, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Madoka Magica, Revue Starlight, Devilman Crybaby, and Wonder Egg Priority (Just don’t watch the last episode. Trust me, it’s for the best.)
Do you like traditional magical girl shows? Then I cannot recommend Cardcaptor Sakura and Little Witch Academia highly enough.
And last, but certainly not least, do you want to see the absolute pinnacle of what anime- and fiction in general- is capable of? Watch Gintama. You will not regret it.

Hey guys, guy behind aomine-in-gensokyo here
I'm just a guy (he/him) who writes (some) posts in the perspective of Aomine Daiki (from Kuroko no Basket, which like... you should totally watch) for fun! It's like a collection of Aomine Daiki wandering across all sorts of media. He may be a little lost... but he's trying his best in these crazy worlds!
My posts may also contain my own opinions separate from the Aomine perspective, signified by any content below the "==="!
Posts related to the Aomine canon can be found here! I also write poll essays which are canon to the Aomine timeline (They are all tagged here)!
(I might reblog things from other series outside of Kuroko no Basket and Touhou such as Jojo, Cave Story, Hollow Knight, Pokemon, Yakuza, Ace Attorney, Haikyuu, Nichijou, and maybe more!)
Oh and there's also an art tag!
Guy behind aomine-in-gensokyo heading out 🏀

I also have twst ocs already lol
Nyamdavaa Ochir (shan yu | mulan) - he/him - 18 y/o. savanaclaw. 3rd year. He’s basically completely divorced from the shan yu in the movie lmao. actually mongolian, based on mongolia & mongol culture. not particularly proficient in magic in general, however his unique magic is specialized distinctly to his needs. When activated, 10~ radius around him all magic is dissipated up to 5 minutes. The reason being Davaa is extremely physically fit and an incredible and brutal fighter. He negates the magic long enough to beat you to a pulp with his bare hands. Very intimidating outwardly, standing nearly 6ft, broad and stoic. However he's much closer to a class clown. Great sense of humor, from dry and deadpan to surreal. Impeccable comic timing. He excels in sports, martial arts, equestrian stuff, archery/sharp shooting, hunting and falconing. But he's in the art club and enjoys pottery for its meditative and therapeutic aspects. He's not great at it but he enjoys himself nonetheless. Generally laid back, aloof, and even keeled. Is fiercely competitive in a sort of silent intensity way. Is superstitious. His personality can most generally be summarized as Mai from Nichijou
I have a clear vision of what he looks like in my head too. I’ll draw him eventually. I need to have more fun with fandoms in my life.
Asiri (yzma | emperor’s new groove) he/she/they - 18 y/o - pomefiore. 3rd year. Known for mood swings and mania. Very much a mad scientist type. While many students at NRC are lowkey shady, Asiri is something else and she can't sufficiently hide it. He was in the running for dorm leader of Pomefiore, being well known for their potion and poison expertise, but was strongly recommended to not pursue the position any further due to being 'emotionally unfit' for the role. As impulsive and cluttered as they were. And thus Asiri holds a bitter resentment towards the current dorm head. One that is almost certainly glanced over and ignored. She's known for being ambitious, pushing the boundaries of magic as far as physically possible, and theatrics. An absolute mad man. A violent, extravagant, unintentionally comical, and admittedly brilliant mad man.
Their unique magic is incomplete by their own omission. A magic that’s more of a long running project that has all the components but yet to be completed in full. Basically, they’ve drawn up something of a schematic, a map of runes that they’ve been slowly etching, carving, and scarring into their body. Basically the runes can complete different sigils based on movement and placement. For example: on their hand, on the sides of their fingers are different strings of runes. When each finger connects with the thumb (okay hand 👌) it creates a different effect/spell.
Needless to say this project is extreme and takes a huge toll on their body but seeing as Asiri is Asiri they’re quite happy with it and the power it can grant them. They use magical means to cover up the progress when in situations where the skin would be showing as they'd surely be called out by other Pomefiore students for it.
no fucking clue what they’re gonna look like but definitely thin and looks like they can move like they’re possessed by a demon.
Qori
( kronk | emperor's new groove ) he/him - 17 y/o - scarabia. 2nd year. himbo in training. how is he even in this villainous school? who knows. Childhood friends with Asiri. Loves animals, protein powder, and baking. Asiri and Qori grew up together. Asiri is presumed to have an exceedingly rough upbringing while Qori's was fairly average. However Qori was close enough to Asiri that he knew something was wrong, and based on Asiri's behavior it must have been turmoil. But the two of them got along well enough, or more so it was because Asiri allowed Qori to tag along and basically used him as a pack mule and Qori was just happy to be there. Qori is basically at NRC on a sports scholarship. He is single handedly bringing down Scarabia's test scores. But he's also proven to be a born leader and is great at instilling vigor and drive into his peers. A sort of cult of personality that would be catastrophic if he were any less kind and warm hearted as he is. Basically, he's too nice to actually be of any threat. Coach Vargas' favorite student tbh. Is actually a bit of a teacher's pet to all the professors. Could sell you a broken microwave he's so good at talking to people. One would think he doesn't belong in scarabia due to his obvious struggles academically, but he can multi-task like no one's business and is a great planner. When Asiri and Qori were kids Asiri told him a ton of complete incorrect facts that Qori assumed to be true all the way up until first year when he realized that she was making it all up and just never told him otherwise.
big boy for sure.

Just me, in spring
I apologize if the translation is not accurate

Amairoha
Sometimes it's nice to be out of character, right?🐇
It's a little late, but all the Under Live shows for the 32nd single have ended
Thank you so much to everyone who came to see the show. First of all, I'm really glad that everyone was able to finish without any injuries!
I could never have overcome it alone, but I practiced with the 5th generation members, reviewed things with them, learned from them, watched and learned from them, and was encouraged by them
I was able to do my best because of you all.
I can talk a lot more now than I have in the past, and…lots of good things!
This tour was held at venues that were close to everyone, so I was able to see all of my fans 🎨
I was able to easily find people waving their light sticks more than usual, and I was also able to find many people waving towels and such
Whenever I found a new light, I was so happy that I would stare at it in a daze (Oh no, haha)
ーーーーーー
「Hidarimuneno Yuuki 」
This is the first song that we, 5th gen, perform
I was so excited every performance
I was happy to join my senpai from the last chorus and to be able to sing eye to eye with Rei-san and Ayatii-san (It was funny how Ayatii-san always lifted up her hair and said 'fassa-' during rehearsals)
「Chopin no usotsuki」
Before starting this song, we used to do a little cheer with Hazuki-san backstage by shouting "Ei Ei Oh!" together. It was a fun and memorable moment🔆
Even though this song wasn't really about dancing, I loved the alluring choreography. It was one of those songs where I had to practice a lot to express the lyrics through movement. I really studied it and worked hard!
Rururu-san, a.k.a Hayashi-san, had an unmatched singing voice,,,
I loved it so much that I could listen to it forever!
It's such an honor to be on the same team as Hayashi-san. I really love her, a lot!
「Passion fruit no tabekata」
I had the pleasure of singing this song with Riria-san, Ayatti-san, and Aruno! We really put our hearts into the final chorus.
Aruno sang the lower harmony and me did some ad-libs or backing vocals. It made the music sound even better and we had a blast singing together as a team.
I already loved this song so much and listened to it all the time, so singing it with everyone was a dream come true!
「Todokanaku tatte」
I had the honor of performing in the position of my beloved, Kanagawa-san.
Despite the fact that it was a little nerve-racking, I watched a lot of videos and tried to mimic how she moved her body.
Then Kaede-san said, "I'm glad we can do this together," which made me feel more relaxed and confident that I could dance well!
「Nichijou」
Since it was my first time performing as an under member, my biggest impression was how much more energy there was! Your cheers also gave us even more motivation, and we were really in sync with each other! LOL
After the performance, my head was spinning like crazy from all the excitement!
But, you know, that's what makes live performances so thrilling and enjoyable!✌🏻
It was the best! I definitely want to do it again!
「Dare Yori soba ni Itai」
I love the lyrics of this song, and I sang it for all the palette members who were present at each performance. Every time I found the pink and lime green light stick colors, I was able to look out at the audience calmly and feel happy.
I hope my feelings were conveyed to them.
There are still so many things I want to write about, but I can't seem to put them together, so maybe I'll write a little bit at a time next time.
It was an incredible experience, and I feel like I learned so much during the eight performances! I want to keep applying what I've learned and become capable of performing in a way that draws people's attention.

Kaede-san made my dream come true by matching my hair with my senpai. Yup, it was a ponytail!🍁

Hi choco! I'm the azul angst anon and since it would be really weird signing my asks like that because it's long, can I pweaassee be in your guestlist? I'll be "☁️" if it's okay. Also, I read that you're into anime/manga too and I wanted to ask if you've ever read shoujo or watched some? And like what's the recent one you've watched (it's okay if it's not shoujo)?
Also, the vil + leona hc was *chef's kiss*! 😭🤌🏼🤌🏼
of course!! I’ll add you to the list right now <33 and thank you!!
and yes! the most recent animes I’ve watched are panty & stocking with garterbelt again, i watch that at least once a month or once every three months for the dub clips and sometimes watch an episode. i also watched some pokemon because im never too old for that, plus some nichijou again. i recently finished another, and beautiful bones: sakurako’s investigation. i also rewatched way of the househusband, and kotaro lives alone. i recommend the last one and third last one only if you’re okay with animes which hit you incredibly hard, and out of nowhere. as for manga, i’m all over the place and read a bit of everything, but the last manga i read was “from the red fog” about the son of a serial killer who turned into a serial killer and is now in an organization for killers. it’s quite interesting and has potential but im not too far in! i’ve also read spy x family awhile back and glad to see an anime! i’m updated with the manga.
as for strictly shoujo, i adore monthly girl’s nozaki kun a whole lot and kept up with the manga. fruits basket original was something dear to me, and took on my love for the chinese zodiac. same with ohshc and it’s comedic aspects. i like kaichou wa maid sama as one of my firsts, but mainly nostalgia because i do not recall any plot but the president is a maid. im unsure if natsume yuujinchou counts but a 10/10 even for the manga. there’s also banana fish, kamisama kiss, special a, gakuen babysitters, shugo chara- probably stopped at doki for some reason, or party, plus much more. for manga i think that the water dragon’s bride is shoujo, but unfortunately the eng translations didn’t keep up )): and i don’t have raws. i also really liked kaiju girls carmelise!! i love how the author thought it would appeal to girls because shoujo but more boys apparently?? but i haven’t read it in quite awhile. i forgot to mention but PRINCESS JELLYFISH is amazing.
there’s likely a lot more i didn’t list off the top of my head, but those are my recent ones and or favorites in the genre! if you watch something feel free to tell me and maybe I’ve seen it or read it! there’s a lot of new animes ive read as manga but just couldn’t take the manga and dropped like the my cool girlfriend, Darwin’s law, tomodachi game, my dress up girlfriend / my darling dress up, etc. normally boring protagonists are fine with me but i just hate it when they’re blatantly overpowered for some, or just have the standard worst design ever but the girl’s get like 100% attention.

Yet again ranking the 5 animes I’ve watched most recently
After losing the will to just sit down and watch it for quite a while, I’ve finally gotten through 5 anime series yet again, and, as is tradition for me by now, I’ve decided to just type out my thoughts and rankings of them, with my first two posts of this nature being here and here. As usual, this is just my personal thoughts, and the only other thing worth noting before I start is that, unlike last time, I do think everything listed here is at least decent on its own. With that, I’ll just get to it. 5. Robotics;Notes
Tumblr media
Number of episodes: 22. Language options: dub and subs available. Streaming availability: Funimation. Robotics;Notes is an adaptation of a visual novel, which I actually just wrote a review on, which can be found here. Long story short, it’s the third entry in the Science Adventure series, the same series Steins;Gate is part of, unknown to most people, with Robotics;Notes technically being the sequel to it. Originally aired in 2012, the same year as the visual novel was released, and made by Production I.G, Robotics;Notes is in an interesting middle ground between the acclaimed and popular Steins;Gate animes and the downright awful and obscure Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child animes, and until 2020 was the only option those who didn’t speak Japanese had to experience it at all. Since I went into so much detail in said visual novel review, I’m mostly going to focus on how the anime holds up both by itself and as an adaptation. Ever since its creation nearly ten years ago, the dream of the Chuo Tanegashima High Robotics Research Club has been to finish Gunbuild-1, a lifesize recreation of Gunvarrel, the titular mecha of an insanely popular anime that’s credited with starting a “robot boom” within Japan, and the club’s current president, Akiho Senomiya, the little sister of the club’s founder, Misaki Senomiya, is extremely determined to see this dream achieved. Unfortunately for her, the club has fallen on hard times, with its funding being cut, its advisor being completely unreliable, and the few other members it has, namely Kaito Yashio, Subaru Hidaka, Junna Daitoku, and Kona Furugoori, aka Frau Koujiro, being quite difficult in their own ways, and often more than Akiho can handle. While Akiho puts her all into finally bringing the club to greatness, the otherwise apathetic Kaito finds himself involved with a mysterious AI called Airi, who exists within the augmented reality app IRUO. Airi’s creator, the deceased Kou Kimijima, turns out to have also created several AR annotations scattered throughout Tanegashima, titled the Kimijima Reports, which warn of a grand conspiracy that will utterly devastate humanity if unopposed. I’m not the most unbiased viewer, since I had played, and enjoyed, the visual novel months before watching this anime, but generally, it’s actually an enjoyable time. Some of Robotics;Notes’ biggest strengths were always its cast of characters and lighter tone, and for the most part, the anime preserves both well, keeping it mostly silly, but endearing early on. The artstyle actually matches up fairly well with the VN’s CGs, and the dub, which I watched just to spice things up, since I already knew the Japanese voice cast was quite good, is overall solid, with Clifford Chapin as Kaito, Lindsay Seidel as Akiho, and Monica Rial as Junna especially sticking out to me. As an adaptation, on the other hand, it falls short in quite a few places, namely when it comes to characterization. While obviously, no adaptation could feasibly fit in every detail from its source material, the Steins;Gate anime managed to preserve almost all of its cast’s characterization, whereas in Robotics;Notes, several characters lose prominent details to their backstories or personal conflicts, or act differently in scenes unrelated to that, making quite a few of them come off different. While instances of the latter case, such as Junna coming off as less shy and hesitant, don’t necessarily worsen anything for the most part, the former definitely does, as it makes the affected characters much less developed and interesting. Nobody suffers from this worse than Kaito himself, who loses most of his backstory, motivations, and arc, to the point of one of his best moments being changed from something intentional to completely accidental, with the end result making him come off as a completely different character, and an inferior one, at that. Additionally, around episode 16, the anime starts diverging pretty significantly from the VN, and not in ways that are improvements, to the point it even leaves a few otherwise preserved scenes in earlier episodes without context. Overall, I can imagine the Robotics;Notes anime still being a decent, if unremarkable watch on its own, and was certainly an interesting and fun way to reexperience the story, and definitely fares better than many visual novel adaptations, but I can’t quite say I’d recommend it. If Robotics;Notes interests you, the visual novel is very much preferred. 4. Nichijou
Tumblr media
Number of episodes: 26. Language options: dub and subs available. Streaming options: Funimation. Here we have one of the most acclaimed anime comedies out there, an adaptation of Keiichi Arawi’s surreal sketch comedy manga series, produced by Kyoto Animation, a name that’ll be showing up here again later. Nichijou mainly focuses on two different trios of characters. There’s the ordinary high school girls Yuuko Aioi, a rather dim and reckless girl with terrible luck, Mio Naganohara, the most relatively normal one of the cast, whenever she’s not having explosive freak outs that involve beating people up, and Mai Minakami, a stoic girl who enjoys messing with people just for their reactions. On the other hand, there’s the far less ordinary Shinonome Laboratories trio of Professor Shinonome, an 8 year old girl who happens to be capable of building incredibly advanced machines, Nano Shinonome, a robot built by the Professor who desperately desires a normal girl more than anything, and Sakamoto, their pet cat who, thanks to a special scarf also made by the Professor, is capable of talking. The series focuses on their would-be ordinary lives, were it not for the seemingly daily chaos they get involved in, from witnessing the school principal wrestle a wild deer, to being trapped in an elevator for hours, to the school science teacher attempting to capture Nano for study. It also follows the antics of several other side characters, such Koujiro Sasahara, the seemingly upper class student who is actually just the son of a family of farmers, to Misato Tachibana, a very typical tsundere towards Sasahara, whose tsun side manifests as assaulting him with military-grade weapons, to little effect, to the equally quirky teachers of their school. Needless to say, it’s a very silly and chaotic series, and that’s exactly what makes it so memorable. The humor is pretty hit and miss in the first half of the series, but from episode 14 onwards, they thoroughly master it, with every episode having at least a few scenes that got me laughing. Beyond the silliness, though, the series actually has a lot of heart to it. There’s a few moments that change up the status quo, or even develop the characters just a bit, and some scenes are surprisingly sweet, if still played for laughs more often than not. There’s also a lot of continuity, which in later episodes often provide the punchlines to some of the best gags, which definitely encourages watching the whole series. The Japanese voice acting is fittingly crazy for each character, and the animation fits perfectly, as while the character designs are quite simple, there’s many would be mundane moments that have contrasting overly impressive and exaggerated animation that makes them very memorable. All in all, Nichijou is a very enjoyable series once it finds its groove, and about the only reason its not higher on my rankings is just because pure comedies aren’t really one of my favorite genres. Still, if you ever want a good laugh, you can’t go wrong with this. 3. Soul Eater
Tumblr media
Number of episodes: 51. Language options: dub and subs available. Streaming availability: Netflix, Funimation. Soul Eater is yet another adaptation, this time of a manga by Atsushi Ōkubo, produced by Studio Bones, who also did the Fullmetal Alchemist animes, and is quite similar to the original FMA series in that it outpaced the manga and, rather than simply overloading itself with filler, decided to go in an entirely different direction by the end. The Death Weapon Meister Academy is a school founded by Death himself, dedicated to the training of Meisters, who wield Weapons, humans with the ability to shapeshift into weapons, for the purpose of destroying Kishin Eggs, evil beings who have consumed the souls of others, and pose the risk of transforming into extremely dangerous demons. Any Meister who can collect the souls of these corrupted beings, as well as the soul of a Witch, can transform their Weapon into a Death Scythe, the personal arms of Death. Among the students of the DWMA are seven Meisters and Weapons who stand out in particular: the teams of Maka Albarn, a kind hearted and responsible, though temperamental, girl, her Weapon, Soul “Eater” Evans, a laidback and snarky wannabe “cool” guy, Black Star, a prideful and loudmouthed ninja who’s seemingly always out to make a spectacle of himself, regardless of how it hampers him, his Weapon, Tsubaki, a humble and levelheaded woman, Death the Kid, the son of Death and one of the top students in the cool, held back only by a crippling obsession with symmetry, and his Weapons, Liz and Patty Thompson. While these seven gradually come together as a team, a Witch named Medusa begins to put an ambitious and destructive plan into motion, one involving her “child”, Crona, and the strange, insanity inducing black blood that courses through their veins. Soul Eater has a lot going for it. A likeable and crazy cast of characters, even the side ones, like the maniacal Doctor Stein, or the surprisingly goofy and casual Death, or the tragic Crona, or the hilariously egotistical Excalibur, to a lot of fun action scenes, to its great animation and overall unique visual design, including the sun and moon having giant, creepy laughing faces. It has a lighthearted, comedic tone that doesn’t detract from the serious moments, and the main characters get some pretty good development as the series goes on. The dub is also great, with Laura Bailey as Maka, Micah Solusod as Soul, Brittney Karbowski as Black Star, and Todd Haberkorn as Death the Kid especially sticking out to me. In general, I don’t have a lot of significant criticisms, besides how the story is handled once the villainous organization Arachnophobia is introduced, which is also about where it begins to deviate from the manga. Most of the villains part of it never really feel like a threat, and the story becomes much more simple and typical compared to how the manga went, and when the ending arrives, it just kinda, happens, with several notable subplots just kinda left unfinished. It definitely feels like an underwhelming ending, and is a big reason why I place this lower on the list, but Soul Eater is still a pretty entertaining watch that’s worth a try if you want a decently lengthy, but not horribly long shonen. 2. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Tumblr media
Number of episodes: 28. Language options: dub and subs available. Streaming availability: Funimation. Here we have the big one, an extremely memetic and famous series by Kyoto Animation, based on a series of light novels by Nagaru Tanigawa, a series that was finally completed back in November 2020 after its start in 2003. Kyon is a lazy and down to earth high school student who wishes for little more for himself than an uneventful, normal high school life- a hope that’s abruptly shattered when, on a whim, he becomes involved with Haruhi Suzumiya, an eccentric, hyperactive, and thoroughly self centered girl, who claims to have no interest in ordinary humans, and instead wishes to discover things thoroughly unusual, such as aliens, time travelers, or espers, and forces Kyon to form a club, the SOS Brigade, with her to achieve this. Haruhi quickly pulls three other students into the brigade, those being Yuki Nagato, a stoic and quiet bookworm, Mikuru Asahina, a shy and passive girl often subjected to humiliation and abuse by Haruhi, and Itsuki Koizumi, a calm transfer student who acts extremely subservient to Haruhi. While Kyon initially writes off the club as an unreasonable use of his time, his fellow members reveal an unexpected truth to him: the subjects of Haruhi’s fascinations actually do exist. Yuki is an alien, of a sort, created and controlled by an entity known as the Data Overmind, Mikuru is a time traveler from some point in the future, and Itsuki is an esper, and member of an organization of similar people. All three of them have been sent to observe the oblivious Haruhi, who appears to have the unconscious ability to change reality itself according to her desires, and is at threat of remaking the entire world if not placated. With Haruhi apparently having taken a unique interest in Kyon, he finds himself taken along for all sorts of supernatural adventures spawned from Haruhi’s whims. There’s a lot I could go on about regarding Haruhi, but in the interest of not turning this into a full on rant, I’ll keep shortish. It’s more or less an insane mishmash of several different genres, from slice of life, to science fiction, to fantasy, just depending on what each individual story feels like being. The episodes are mostly adapted from the early light novels, mostly the multiple stories from the third and fifth novels, The Boredom and The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya, respectively. It’s not often you’ll have any idea just what to expect from each individual episode, which makes the series very chaotic, but interesting. The characters are likeable and memorable, including the side characters, and the sheer ridiculousness of what goes on makes for many amusing moments. At the same time, the series is surprisingly complex, with many possible interpretations of its characters and the events they go through, furthered by the antics Kyoto Animation pulled when it was originally airing, such as airing the episodes out of chronological order, meaning the plot would often jump from the middle of an arc to something else. The end result is a very unique and enjoyable product, helped by the fantastic dub, with the actors capturing each character perfectly, from Crispin Freeman as the grounded and snarky Kyon, to Wendee Lee as the aggressively energetic Haruhi, to Stephanie Sheh as the gentle, yet secretive Mikuru. That said, there is one pretty disappointing part of it all, and that’s the second season, mostly thanks to the infamous Endless Eight arc, an eight part arc that’s more or less the same things happening over and over, with only the first and last episodes having anything noticeably different. Regardless of its own uniqueness, more than half the season is taken over by this, and something that may have worked if cut down to three or four episodes instead singlehandedly killed off the series’ goodwill. About the only redeeming factor of the second season is the five part adaptation of The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya, which has some of the funniest moments in the whole series. Overall, Haruhi is still a very fun series, and I’m really gonna have to watch its movie, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, one of these days. 1. Trigun
Tumblr media
Number of episodes: 26. Language options: dub and subs available. Streaming availability: Funimation, Hulu. Finishing off this list is an adaptation of a manga series by Yasuhiro Nightow, produced by Madhouse and another adaptation that overtook its source material. Compared to how Soul Eater handled it, however, Trigun went down much, much better, to the point Nightow himself had nothing but praise for how the anime turned out, and the series is generally considered one of the best animes of the late 90′s. On the harsh desert planet of Gunsmoke lives a wandering gunslinger known as Vash the Stampede, the “Humanoid Typhoon” with a large handgun known to leave tremendous destruction in his wake, who amassed a bounty of $$60,000,000,000 after destroying the city of July, leading to an endless trail of bounty hunters out to collect the price on his head. In the middle of all this, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, two representatives of an insurance society which is often forced to pay for damages caused by Vash, track him down for the purposes of minimizing the chaos he causes. Upon catching up with him, however, the duo discovers that, contrary to his reputation, Vash is a kindhearted goof, and self proclaimed hunter of love and peace, who absolutely refuses to ever take another person’s life, even at great personal risk to himself. Vash continues his travels carefree, helping out whoever he can, with the occasional assistance of Meryl and Milly, as well as a traveling priest known as Nicholas D. Wolfwood, only to one day have an encounter with a mysterious and cruel man known as Legato Bluesummers. Vash soon learns that Legato has hired a group of assassins known as the Gung-Ho Guns to kill Vash, and leave a trail of bodies wherever they go, seemingly for the sole purpose of tormenting Vash. As Vash hunts down Legato, he is gradually forced to face his past, and consider whether he can truly stay committed to his pacifist ideals. In general, Trigun is just a very, very well made series. It has a likeable and developed cast of characters, with special mention going to Vash, who is a very compelling and sympathetic character, and Wolfwood, who makes a great foil to Vash with very interesting development of his own, with characters outside of the main cast being memorable as well, from Legato himself, to even some of the more minor villains, such as the varied members of the Gung-Ho Guns, or Brilliant Dynamites Neon, who makes an inexplicably strong impression for a one off villain not even important to the overall plot. The space western setting is quite good, and the designs are great, with many villains having distinctive looks that further help them make an impression. The action is great, and the animation is also quite good, and has that 90′s anime charm. The dub, while a bit rough around the edges, is generally solid too. From Lia Sargent as the ditzy but kind Milly, to Dorothy Elias Fahn as the hotheaded Meryl, to Jeff Nimoy as the weary Wolfwood, to Richard Cansino as the calculating and disturbing Legato, with special mention needing to go to Johnny Yong Bosch as Vash. Despite it actually being his first voice acting role ever, he does a great job in portraying the many sides to Vash, and absolutely sells many of the biggest moments in the story. Speaking of which, the series started quite lighthearted and wacky, with the first four episodes actually being filler, but gets gradually darker as it goes on. The earlier episodes are still quite enjoyable on their own, though, and manage to slowly reveal new aspects to Vash in each one, before finally setting his nature in stone in episode 5. What really sells the series and makes it so memorable, however, are the themes it explores, of the practicality of unwavering pacifism, and whether taking a life, whether for heinous crimes committed without remorse, or with the purpose of protecting others, is ever justifiable. While quite a few series have touched dilemmas like this before, what makes Trigun stand out with it is the emphasis placed upon it throughout the whole series, with many episodes touching upon it in some regard. It genuinely fairly looks at the different sides of it all, and the consequences of each, with many emotional moments coming from it as a result. While the manga did ultimately take a very different turn from the anime, the anime actually preserves several of the most important plot moments, and manages to come to a satisfactory conclusion of its own regarding the themes. Ultimately, Trigun makes for a very fun and interesting watch that I highly recommend. And with that, my ranking is complete. With the exception of Robotics;Notes, I can pretty confidently recommend every show on this list. Got some more shows I plan to get through soon, so another ranking like this may be soon in the making. Either way, till next time. -Scout

Note
pls answer all of the anime asks i love knowing things abt you
hello beloved anon (whose name may or may not begin with "L"), thank you for the splendid request. I shall provide my answers under a "keep reading" out of courtesy, hopefully it works.
1. first anime you ever watched
Naruto. my brother and I encountered it one day while scrolling channels when I was about 6 or 7 I believe; I was fascinated by how different it was from the cartoons and shows I was used to.
2. first anime crush
I wouldn't really say I've ever had a crush on an anime character, but I'm a big fan of maka from soul eater.
3. favorite anime character
I thought about this a lot while making my fav characters list, and it is probably maka again.
4. least favorite anime character
This one's kinda tough, but I think I'll have to go with the main character from Alien Nine, Yuri Otani. I don't necessarily dislike her in terms of personality but I feel like she spends 70% of the show crying which made her very unpleasant to listen to. Alternatively any weirdly horny character could also go here.
5. list all anime you have ever watched
I have currently seen 211 shows so I shall refrain from making this that long. Though, if anyone is truly curious I do have each one listed and organized by my personal rating in a google doc that I can share.
6. popular anime you didn’t like
Made in Abyss. Really cool concept and decent visuals/music, but I often felt worse after watching an episode than I did before, it almost borders on torture p*rn at times.
7. anime you are currently watching
I'm gonna shorten some of these names, if any are unclear and you rly wanna know you can ask. Great: Sonny Boy Decent: Idaten Deities, Slime, Kaizoku, Higurashi Sotsu, Realist Kingdom, Aquatope, Peach Boy, Tsukimichi, Vanitas no Carte, Deatte 5 Okay: Tantei wa Mou, Seirei Gensouki, Kageki Shoujo, Night Head 2041, Otome Game X, Blue Reflection Ray, MHA season 5, Dragon Maid S, Cheat Kusushi
8. anime character you are most like
This one is also quite tough, I sometimes see a little bit of myself in characters but usually there isn't a ton of similarity. Though I did take a quiz a while ago that said I was similar to Uncle Iroh from avatar and I was very pleased with that answer.
9. favorite anime child
A tie between Renge Miyauchi from non non biyori and Naru Kotoishi from Barakamon.
10. favorite anime animal sidekick
Not technically an animal but Matsumoto from Vivy: Fluorite Eyes' Song was pretty good. Can't think of many off the top of my head honestly.
11. anime you didn’t expect to like but did
Nichijou. I actually stopped watching it the first time I tried thinking it was just generic cute stuff, but now it's unquestionably my favorite anime of all time.
12. anime that should get more attention from others
Mononoke. Super cool visuals and fairly interesting little stories.
13. funnest anime you have watched
Another difficult question, there are a few different ways I think a show can be fun (visually, plot twists, rapid action, etc.). But since it has all the things I just mentioned, I think I'll have to go with The Tatami Galaxy
14. saddest anime you have ever watched
Probably Plastic Memories, very similar to the movie I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.
15. anime you never get sick of watching
Nichijou, it's too good.
16. 10 best animes you have watched
Nichijou (10), Houseki no Kuni (9.8), Girls’ Last Tour (9.3), Yuyushiki (9.3), Wonder Egg Priority (9.2), Tower of God (9.2), The Tatami Galaxy (9.1), Kaguya-sama: Love is War (9.1), Mob Psycho 100 (9.0), Mononoke (9.0)
17. biggest anime crush
Still don't really have any so I'll just say Maka again.
18.10 worst anime you have watched
Juuni Taisen (6.5), Dragon Ball (kinda) (6.3), Kokkoku (6.3), Magical Girl Site (5.9), Mirai Nikki (5.6), Babylon (5.6), Ueno-san wa Bukiyou (5.4), From the New World (5.2), Asobi Asobase (5.2), Made in Abyss (5.0)
19. favorite anime ships
I don't really do this either sorry. I do like the relationship between the two main characters of Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions I suppose.
20. least favorite anime ships
Any weird pedophilic or incesty things people are freaks about.
21. anime that made you cry, when
I don't ever really full on sob because of shows, but the scene in Madoka Magica where they face off against the orchestra witch who is a character I won't spoil definitely made me tear up. Still love that scene.
22. age you started watching anime/person who introduced you to it.
As previously mentioned I think I was like 6 or 7 and I suppose you could say my brother introduced me to it.
23. unpopular character you love
I don't know if I have a good answer for this one as I'm not too sure which characters are and are not popular, but I feel like Adamant or Kongo-sensei from Houseki no Kuni is somewhat underappreciated
24. popular character you hate
Was never fond of Black Star from Soul Eater.
25. anime you would recommend to someone who hates anime
Either Cowboy Bebop or FMA Brotherhood usually seem to please people who aren't usually into anime.
26. manga you have read all the was through
There are a couple, but Shimeji Simulation is my favorite manga by far.
27. anime you plan to watch in the future
Komi-san will be getting an anime adaptation this October which I'll be watching.
28. most upsetting moment in anime, why
The scene in Made in Abyss where one character attempts to amputate the arm of another that has been stabbed by a venomous quill using only a rock and pocket knife. Like 15 straight minutes of a 12 year old screaming and crying in agony.
29. anime that deserves another season
Houseki no Kuni 100%. I've read through the manga for it and there's so much good content that could be covered.
30. one anime conclusion you would change
I would change up the ending of Carole and Tuesday quite a bit, the scope became too grandiose and ended up feeling pretty lame. Still a good show though, especially the first half.

My Review of Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni GOU
Tumblr media
(a.k.a. When They Cry Gou)
I know what you’re thinking. Why the heck am I reviewing this anime again? I’ve already written a review in 2009 and re-polished it in 2016. (Here it is BTW) I’ve made my point on who I like, hate, what ships are worthy, and poked fun at all the deaths that happened throughout the series. I think some time has passed that I should say some thoughts on this…um, story. After all, Higurashi is one of my favorite animes.
STORY: Ah shit, here we go again!
Tumblr media
Higurashi or When They Cry is about a boy named Keiichi Maebara who recently moved to a place called Hinamizawa. And ever since moving to this town, he’s found his days are filled with fun mischief with fellow friends Rena Ryuuguu, Satoko Hojo, Mion Sonozaki, and Rika Furude. But little does Keiichi know that there’s a little murder mystery that surrounds the town. During a town festival known as Watanagashi (or Cotton Drifting), there’s usually one or two people that go missing or turn up dead. And this year, Keiichi is next. So let’s relive the horrors that plague the town of Hinamizawa and…
One episode later.
Tumblr media
Wait, what the…?! It’s episode 2, why are we seeing Hanyuu? I don’t remember that in the manga. The visual! THE VISUAL! WHAT THE FUCK?! ISN’T THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A REBOOT? WHAT THE FUCK?! WHAT THE FUCK?! WHY IS THERE AN ADULT RIKA?! WAIT, IS THAT ADULT RIKA OR BERN? IS THIS GOING TO BE THE PARALLEL UNIVERSE TO THE WITCHES OF UMINEKO?! THE SHADOWS IN THE OPENING ARE TOO FAMILIAR FROM OTHER WORKS! Ryukishi07, you magnificent, fucking troll master for keeping this hidden until the second episode’s air date!
Many of us did not see this coming. When they announced a new Higurashi series that was going to be done by a different studio, many of us speculated whether this was going to be a reboot or a sequel. But then we got the PV trailers and it looked like we were going to get a reboot to correct the mistakes Studio Deen made years ago. Rika’s head doesn’t look like its gonna snap off because her body is so small in comparison. Improvements! I mean, they showed everything we were already used to like the yandere girls, the original soundtrack, the original freakin’ cast, and death by baseball bat. Hell, the first episode ended with an Eiko Shimamiya song! It was on track to being a reboot! A better looking reboot!
Tumblr media
Here in lies the sequel aspect! After episode one, we get a scene that isn’t usually seen until the Kai part of Higurashi (a good 4-5 arcs away). And they give away the secret that Rika Furude is repeating the timeline of June 1983 over and over because she keeps dying. And as the series progresses, you notice little things different from the original series. Many of the well-known storylines end much differently than what you remember. Instead of Keiichi killing Rena and Mion with a baseball bat, you’ve got Rena going psycho on Keiichi. And Rika’s fate is somehow worse than the stories of the original series. So let’s head back to Hinamizawa to hear the cicadas cry and watch a murder mystery unfold.
THE SUB: All the original voice actors have returned to voice their respected roles. Perfection in a nutshell!
LICENSING: You’ve gotta be shitting me!
Tumblr media
As I’ve mentioned years ago in my review, the original Higurashi anime went through a turbulent time being licensed in the states. It was originally licensed and dubbed by Geneon. But once Geneon collapsed, FUNimation licensed it and did absolutely fuck all with it. Geneon could only manage to squeak out one season. At this point, FUNimation was picking up titles that Geneon used to have before it fell under including Familiar of Zero, Kyou Kara Maou, and yes, Higurashi. All of these titles mentioned here were done absolutely nothing with despite having cult followings, second seasons, and OVA’s.
A year or two after licensing it, the license expired for Higurashi. For nearly six years, the only copies you could get were out of print and estimating at $500 at the very least for a full collection. Single DVD’s could be found in rare shops, but it would take like 13 years to complete the fucking collection if you did it that way. And that was only for the first season. Second season, the best all of us could do was bootleg DVD’s from Japan Town or fansubs with glaring errors for the best season to Higurashi. We had to deal with this shit until Sentai Filmworks licensed and released the first 2 seasons and the Rei OVA’s.
AND NOW YOU’RE TELLING ME FUNIMATION IS CLAIMING HIGURASHI ALL FOR THEMSELVES?!
Where the shit was this love 10 years ago when we were asking politely to release Kai? People ignorantly blew Higurashi off for years because season two was never released in the states until 2016 because they thought the damn anime ended after Rena held up the school. I’m already irritated with FUNimation after the Interspecies Reviewers debacle and I’m still quite butt-hurt over them re-releasing Nichijou with a dub to make a quick buck. Licensing Higurashi just brings back old anger. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy Higurashi is legally licensed and can be seen on at the very least Hulu. It’s just that I hold grudges and this was a big one.
THE DUB: Holy…um, okay! This is a rather big gulp to take in. As I’ve repeatedly mentioned in past reviews, the Higurashi dub was a mixed bag of okay, bad, and oh gasperts kill it with fire. So, not great! The good folks at Geneon (before bankrupting in America) dubbed the first season with a good chunk of folks that put their fake names to the credits. Again, not great! To me, there were some aspects of Megan Hollingshed, Mela Lee, and Grant George’s performances of Mion, Rena, and Keiichi that were okay. SOME! John Snyder and Karen Strassmen as Ooishi and Takano were the best out of that dub. Everything else was just irredeemable! It needed a redub, an overhaul, and a spit-shine. For years, I’ve wondered who would be the dream cast. Sentai Filmworks unfortunately never dubbed the remaining seasons when they released them. Would Luci Christian be the heavenly voice to do Rika Furude? Could we get Hilary Haag to do Satoko? Okay, that never came to pass.
This dub is a breath of fresh air. Rika doesn’t sound like Mihoshi. Satoko doesn’t sound fake, Keiichi doesn’t sound like a weird Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s perfect. ESPECIALLY BRITTANY LAUDA AS SATOKO! I knew the second she was cast as Satoko that she was going to excel the fuck out of this role. And I was not disappointed! The only voice I’m still not quite used to is Michelle Rojas as the Sonozaki twins. Probably because I was somewhat okay with Megan Hollingshed’s voice in the 2006 version that it’ll take some time! And we FINALLY got a voice for Hanyuu. I am super excited that Xanthe Huynh is the voice and I know she’ll do great with this role! With all of that said, here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Keiichi is now played by Khoi Dao (known for Kiriyama on March Comes in Like a Lion, Murata on Demon Slayer, Chaka on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Pt. 3, and Iskhan on SAO: Alicization)
*Rena is now played by Emi Lo
*Mion/Shion is now played by Michelle Rojas (known for Shizu Delta on Overlord, Touka on Assassination Classroom, Minase on Psycho Pass, Kanan on Love Live Sunshine, and Kusakai on Keijo!!!!!!!!)
*Rika is now played by Apphia Yu (known for Rio on Assassination Classroom, Marie on Black Clover, You on Love Live Sunshine, Victorique on Gosick, Natsumi on Danganronpa 3, and Laki on Fairy Tail)
*Satoko is now played by Brittany Lauda (known for Riko on Made in Abyss, Meidri on Interspecies Reviewers, Lessar on Index III, and Ichigo on Darling in the FranXX)
*Hanyuu is played by Xanthe Huynh (known for Menma on Anohana, Haru on Persona 5, Hanayo on Love Live, Hidomi on FLCL: Progressive, PallaPalla on Sailor Moon Super S [redub], and Sachi on SAO)
ANY CHANGES IN YOUR HATE-O-RADE:
Okay Medea, let-a-rip!
*inhales and exhales*
Tumblr media
Teppei Hojo is trash. He is ultimate trash. This fucker needs to be murdered in every timeline. He is a turd in a Glenn Quagmire shirt. Him and his wife are trash. And when this pile of trash is cheating on that pile of trash, he sleeps with peak trash named Ritsuko. Teppei Hojo needs to die in every timeline. Whenever Keiichi bashes this cum-burger’s head in with a blunt instrument, I scream at the top of my lungs, “DIE SCUM, DIE”! And nothing, I repeat, NOTHING will change my opinion of Teppei Hojo.
Tumblr media
Episode 23.
Oh, fuck you Higurashi Gou!
MUSIC: Okay, thank you for proving me wrong. I did not despise the opening theme. Having Higurashi with no Eiko Shimamiya is like having Pokemon with no Rika Matsumoto. Or Rozen Maiden with no ALI PROJECT. But this new opening is fine by my standards.
That’s right, get the niceness of the review before I get angry down below.
Tumblr media
THESE TIMELOOPS: Rika tries to find solutions to end her time-loop in June 1983. Much like the original series, we follow stories from the Onikakushi-hen, Watanagashi-hen, and Tatarigoroshi-hen arcs (the first three stories to Higurashi, although now these have different names). However, all of these arcs have different endings. And after a positive turnaround with Satoko escaping from her abusive uncle, shit goes south when Detective Ooishi, who up to this point has never suffered under the Hinamizawa Syndrome or died a painful death goes on a murderous rampage. Higurashi style! That means, he’s after Rika Furude, will slaughter anyone in his way, and scratching his neck because he sees maggots (part of the hallucination effect).
Tumblr media
What the shit? Ooishi for the most part has been a great guy. With the exception of the Tatarigoroshi-hen storyline, he was a nice guy! In the limbo with Hanyuu, Rika now remembers who has killed her. Every time Rika dies up to this point, she never remembers who was the cause of her demise. Hanyuu implanted that power to remember the deaths and a clue for Rika to use and then she disappears.
Tumblr media
Now seriously, imagine Rika’s plight here. She has been repeating the month of June 1983 for over a hundred years. And each of these times she repeats, she’s horribly murdered. Rika got the shit-end of the deal in the murder department in the original series, including being dissected on while alive. Then, leaving her bloody, naked corpse out in the open of the Oyashiro altar! She’s tired of this shit! She wants to live a happy life away from Hinamizawa. She wants to grow older, become a teenager, and have fun. And this series made it worse by having her die four times in one episode. Not just that, but murdered by the most unexpected people including Akasaka, Chief Kimiyoshi, Mion’s mother Akane, and Keiichi. Keiichi has never killed Rika in any of the timelines up to this point. He has killed Mion and Rena, but never Rika. Keiichi loves Rika! Welcome back to A Million Ways to Die in Hinamizawa.
I’ll just add decapitation, drowning in a lake, set on fire, drowning in a sewage pipe, and death by…um…
Alexa, play Chandelier by Sia.
ENDING: We all know by now that in the original series, Miyo Takano is the betrayer and the reason behind all the murders during the Cotton Drifting Festival. This time, it’s someone closer to Rika that’s causing Rika so much pain. After we watched the worst kinds of murders happen to Rika, the episode after gave us our answer. Satoko, Rika’s friend and confidant is not happy that Rika is turning her back on Oyashiro and Hinamizawa. All the while pulling out her intestines!
Tumblr media
Oh Higurashi, don’t stop being gory!
Yes, Satoko is aware of past timelines much like Rika and is almost on a god-like state. So what the hell happened to her? I know Satoko’s past has been a cluster-fuck of horror with her brother disappearing, her parents dying, and every form of abuse from her uncle. But she was able to prevail after all that. After surviving 1983, a lot has changed in Hinamizawa. The three big families of Hinamizawa put an end to the Cotton Drifting Festival and claiming there is no curse of Oyashiro. Mion and Shion moved on and are going to high school. And Rika decides she wants to move away from this village. By attending St. Lucia! And she wants to do this with Satoko.
Oh, if you don’t recall St. Lucia, Shion attended this academy until she escaped during the Meakashi-hen arc. It was also the same school that Ange from Umineko attended. But of course Ange attended it in the 90’s and we are clearly in the 80’s. Moving on!
Tumblr media
Rika and Satoko studied their butts off for years and their hard work paid off as both were admitted into St. Lucia. Now Rika was able to prevail and fit in with everyone. Satoko on the other hand couldn’t do the same as her grades took a dip, her manners are atrocious, and she doesn’t seem to fit in with anyone. And this caused a drift between Rika and Satoko! And so during a trip to Hinamizawa, Satoko went to the old shrine where she ended up getting sent to that limbo place Rika and Hanyuu were at many times before. There, she meets Eua (God, I hope that really isn’t her name). She’s much like Hanyuu except a lot more condescending. Oh, and she’s that mysterious shadow during the opening theme. She bestows the power to Satoko of reviving on death and returning to a certain point in time. In the hopes that Satoko is able to stop Rika from going to St. Lucia! But Rika is not going to budge. She wants out of Hinamizawa no matter what. And Satoko just wants to be with her friend no matter what. Satoko is even shown Rika’s past and still no dent in…Okay, this is bugging the fuck outta me. Pause the Ending portion!
Tumblr media
MY GRIPES WITH SATOKO: Satoko, girl, the fuck is wrong with you?! I know Rika is like your main chick and everything, but for fuck’s sake loosen the grip you have with Rika. This season has changed you and not for the better. You made a connection with ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS from Hinamizawa. Big connections! At least in the original series you did. Look at your moments with Keiichi and Shion. Are you just going to shove them off? And what really sets me off is that Satoko literally had the opportunity to learn about Rika’s hundred year’s loop of death. And feels nothing about it! Only that it’s a challenge to break her herself! God damn, at the end of season one, Keiichi learned the truth and he was remorseful. This bitch doesn’t care that her friends were murdered in such a way. And Rika’s been shot in the head, had a live dissection performed on her, and other forms of torture…AND IT DOESN’T FAZE SATOKO!
I know in my original Higurashi review, I felt sorry for Satoko as she did seem to get the short-end of the stick living in Hinamizawa. I mean, her parents died right in front of her, she suffered abuse from her uncle, abuse from her aunt, ostrisized by the town for years, and a myriad of all types of shit to befall her. But Higurashi Gou has ruined this character. Rika didn’t really do anything wrong to Satoko. She didn’t snitch on her when Satoko got in trouble. She offered help to Satoko when she thought her grades were slipping. Satoko just held onto this petty vendetta. Satoko acted like Rika sexually assaulted her and have two other people gang rape her while drugging her. Okay, that’s a call for revenge, not your petty shit.
Tumblr media
YOU SEE WHERE I’M AT WITH YOU SATOKO?! Your actions are so bad that you have me siding with the protagonist from Redo of Healer.
REDO.
OF.
HEALER!!!
I’m done with you! Girl, bye! We now return you to my talk about the ending already in progress.
Tumblr media
BACK TO THE ENDING: Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Yeah, Satoko is leaving a bad impression on many of us who have been following the Higurashi story for years. And it just gets worse as she uses her new power for petty shit and abusing it at that. I mean, we saw Rika use her power in order to find a way to live past June 1983. Satoko is just using that shit to win some games and have things go her way. What else could this series bless us with? How about an epiphany from Teppei Hojo?
What?!
Teppei changes for the better.
What?!
Look, I admit that these moments with Teppei and Satoko were tame compared to the shit she’s pulled in the last several episodes. But this is Teppei Hojo! The same guy that used Satoko as his personal punching bag! The same guy who fleeced Rena’s father! The same guy many of us who cheer every time we see him on a moped because we know someone’s going to bash his head in with a baseball bat. Even my best friend knows how I am with this guy. When she gave me Higurashi free swag, I took everything except for Teppei. I don’t take trash. So seeing him so remorseful makes me…conflicted.
Tumblr media
So now Satoko’s got things turned around for her. Her uncle has…changed?! Add to that, her God-like power. Satoko decides to change the past for her own advantage. This includes changing one of the biggest stories in Higurashi Kai with the kids vs. Miyo Takano. If Rika doesn’t experience the pain in those timelines, she won’t think about leaving Hinamizawa. And if she doesn’t leave Hinamizawa, she’ll stay with Satoko forever.
Oh what a tangled web of crazy Higurashi Gou was! I gotta tell you, Higurashi got me excited all the way up until we learn it was Satoko. And then it went straight to Hell. They turned Satoko into a straight-up selfish monster. Totally unlike the Satoko we’ve all grown to love in the original series. Yes, Satoko had those moments where, yeah, you would want to throw a chair at her and beat her ass with it. But that was only temporary! You would always see the good in Satoko despite that mischievous laugh and those episodes in Higurashi Rei. And God help me, I was a shipper of Rika x Satoko 10 years ago. Not a big one, but a supporter of it. Now, I would rather support Amourshipping from Pokemon than root for this. And I despise the living fuck out of Amourshipping. That should tell you something!
Tumblr media
If original Satoko were bestowed the powers from Eua, I think things would be different. Satoko would probably use her powers to prevent all the bad stuff from happening to her friends and to her brother Satoshi. I mean, my goodness, not once did I see her think, hey maybe I should find a way to help my ailing brother. Change a few timelines, make him all better! And of course, feel sympathy for Rika’s plight. Do it for Rika’s sake, not your own selfish desires! Rika has died horrificly for hundreds of years. And I seriously just can’t get over Satoko’s reaction to that when she learned the truth. Instead, she wants to treat Rika like a caged bird. Best friend my ass!
Now can Higurashi SOTSU fix the hot mess of Satoko? Time will only tell! And good on them for having Higurashi air in the summertime. Summertime is for Higurashi! Autum is for Umineko. Speaking of, it’s been since 2009. Any chance you want to give Umineko the old reboot or sequel it sorely needs? Oh forget it! My likeness for this season is conflicted. I was annoyed by it, but I didn’t fully hate it. It’s just that last arc with Satoko really burned my beans. And I’m sure a lot of you all feel the same way.
Guys, if you want to watch Higurashi Gou, do yourselves a favor and watch the original series first. Let that swirl around your heads for a while. I know the creator tricked us at the beginning of this series thinking it was going to be an honest-to-God retelling. It is not! It is a sequel. And a sequel that isn’t based off a game or manga of all things. So fans are jumping into this with eyes closed! And if you’re a fan of Satoko Hojo, I’m sorry. I’m just sorry.
If you want to check out Higurashi Gou, it is available to watch on FUNimation and Hulu. But please, if you haven’t watched the original series, go to HI-DIVE now and watch “When They Cry” and “When They Cry Kai”. I think you can manage without watching any of the OVA’s.
I’d rather watch that Kira OVA where the fanservice is thin, you can practically lick off the whipped cream from the Sonozaki’s tit.
That should tell you something if I’m starting to say something nice about Higurashi Kira.
See you in a few months when Higurashi SOTSU comes out.

Journey To West Story Wukong and Sanzang Alone Time
{I also posted this on Wattpad BTW ;>}
(This scene comes from Nichijou ep.4 17:00)
It’s late, the sun is starting to set on Flower Fruit Mountain. The scenery is beautiful, but not the tension. Wukong and Tripitaka sit on a grassy hill on the mountain, alone. Wukong is looking at the sunset while  Tripitaka is reading a book. Wukong looks at his master. His master was kidnapped by a demon who mistook him for someone else. The disciples were worried sick. The demon brought the monk apologizing for kidnapping him. Of course, Tripitaka forgave him, but Wukong didn’t. Wukong was about to murder him but was stopped by the others letting the demon escape.  Tripitaka scolded Wukong for trying to murder someone who made a common mistake. Of course, it would lead to an argument between them which would lead to  Tripitaka not talking to Wukong for 3 whole days. That’s when out of nowhere, the monk told Wukong if would accompany him to see the sunset while he reads. Wukong agreed, nervous about what the monk would do. Which leads to now. It has been nearly 5 whole minutes of silence between them, the last words coming from  Tripitaka telling Wukong that this is the spot he wishes to sit. Wukong looks down on the book his master is reading and notices that the book is inside the other, about demon emotions and reacting to things. (Basically a book on demons and facts about them.)
‘It’s like he’s begging me to make a joke about how he’s reading a demon book inside a monk book.’ Wukong grins. ‘Well, I guess I’ll take the bait.’
Wukong lets out a chuckle.
“That book your reading is going undercover, huh?”
He gives a light hit on the monk’s shoulder. Wukong waits a while, expecting a scowl or something but when he turns to the monk he sees that Tripitaka has ignored him. Wukong gets upset until Tripitaka turns to Wukong with a serious look that sends shivers down his back.
“Wukong, please don’t ever make another joke like that again.”
Wukong then looks at Tripitaka with a blank expression.
“Your jokes are always so good and funny.” A small smile appears on the monk’s face. “Pigsy’s and Sandy’s aren’t nearly as good compared to yours.”
Wukong's face sparkles, receiving praise from his master. He chuckles, rubbing his nose with his finger. Wukong starts rubbing his neck.
“Well I don’t always come up with the jokes on my own, sometimes the jokes come up with me. You know how just now you had your books stacked up weird it's almost like you were asking for it. But like things is, I wasn’t really sure you would find it funny.” He replies, giggling afterwards.
“Really you weren’t sure?” Tripitaka responds. “Are you being honest when you say that?”
Wukong listens closely to what he’s going to say next. Tripitaka turns towards the sunset, eyes close. Then look down.
“I figured that you would understand.”
“Huh?” Wukong responds with confusion.
“I thought you would catch on to what I was doing since you're so intelligent.”
Wukong’s face lights up. Being flattered by the master made him blush.
“I had no idea you saw me in that way. I mean I’m flattered you think so highly of me. It’s so good to know there is someone out there who thinks I’m trustworthy.”
The smile disappeared from the monk’s face.
“Trustworthy?”
Wukong’s smile disappears as the monk sits up straight, eyes still closed.
“I rather not bring ‘trust’ into this.” His voice becomes serious. “And I don't think we should talk to each other anymore, after all, you're no longer my disciple.”
Wukong fidgeted. Processing what his master had just told him. Tripitaka then turns to Wukong, smiling at him.
“You’re my best friend, we don’t need words to convey our feelings.”
Wukong’s smile comes back from the words his monk had told him. Light tears form in his eyes.
“Really? … We-were best f-friends, you mean it.”
Working turns his body towards the monk.
“Aw, Don’t be silly just mean I’m no longer your disciple doesn’t mean we don’t need to talk, right?”
Wukong wraps his hand around Tripitaka, which he responds by slapping it off of him. It startles the monkey, bringing his back a little.
- ‘But … Tripitaka.’-
The monk doesn’t look at Wukong as he responds.
“I would prefer it if you don’t touch me so often.”
Wukong turns serious.
“Oh, ok. Sorry about that master.” He responds in a smooth voice.
Tripitaka looks down.
“Please stop it. You keep talking like that, and I can’t help it.”
Wukong is confused by the monk’s sudden shyness.
“Can’t help what, master?”
“I can’t stop myself.”
He looks at Wukong with gleaming eyes.
“From liking you even more.”
There’s silence between them, as the wind blows by and the birds sing by. Bright red Blush forms in Wukong checks as he’s speechless. The monk looks back down at his book, timidly. Wukong breaks the silence, stuttering an answer.
“Um, h-hey it’s no big deal. Y-you like me b-because we-were best friends, right?”
“No, it’s not like that at all, Wukong…”
Wukong becomes worried about what his master is going to say next.
“I do like you as a friend, but I also like you more than that.”
Wukong is shocked by this, completely frozen.
“I’m sorry, Wukong, i-i just, can’t explain this.”
The monk avoids any form of eye contact with the monkey beside him. Wukong stutters an answer.
“Well, I um… that’s r-really uh…”
The monk looks away, flustered, keeping his book close to him. Wukong looks away, panicking.
-‘What the heck is going on? I knew something was up, he’s talking way more than usual. Come to think of it, he’s the one who said he wanted to be alone with me today.’-
Wukong turns his head to look at his master.
- ‘Did he … want to confess to me? But why and since when? How long has he felt this way?’-
Wukong turns his body back to the monk, keeping his distance.
“Um master… forgive me for asking, but … I have just a little something to clear up…”
Tripitaka looks back at Wukong, showing a calm and relaxed expression.
Wukong blushes a bit, fearing what he might say will hurt his master’s feelings. He responds quickly.
“The thing is I don’t know what to say! This is all happening so fast and we’re both just getting along! Not to mention you're a monk, not that there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s just, I don’t believe a great monk like you should do such things, it will upset Budda and the other gods. I just don’t want you getting hurt, Master.”
Tripitaka replies in a serious tone.
“You know I was just messing with you, right?”
Wukong throws himself backward.
“Thatwassuperultragreatdeliousilywonderfullyhardtounderstand!!”
Wukong throws himself back up straight.
“WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT SUNZANG! YOU HAD ME GOING THERE! NOW YOU SAYING THAT WAS ALL A JOKE! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!”
“I see”
Tripitaka responds in a calm voice.
“You’re usually really perspective to these types of things so I was expecting you would figure what I was up to and play along.”
Wukong is speechless, then becomes serious.
“Well, I had a feeling you were up to something.”
“You’re a liar,” Tripitaka replies.
Wukong growls at his master.
“Not exactly, I knew something was off. It’s just time for my brain to process the signs, I almost had you figured out too.”
Wukong looks away, arms crossed.
“You ended up dropping the act before I could piece it all together and play it off.”
“That’s funny, didn’t you say I had you going earlier?” Tripitaka replies quickly.
Wukong stutters in embarrassment. His master got him there.
“Oh well… uh”
Tripitaka turns to Wukong with a glare.
“I hate being lied to more than anything so you can stop making excuses.”
Wukong opens his mouth to protest but swallows his words. He knows better than to argue with his master.
Especially when he’s pissed, which doesn’t happen often, it’s pretty rare to see him this ticked off.
“I’m sorry, forgive me, master.” Wukong pleads.
“Chill out, I’m still just messing with you,” Tripitaka responds.
At this point Wukong is done, he throws himself back laying on the hill, his hands on his face.
“I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE ANYMORE!!”
“So you didn’t notice then, the joke I made earlier?”
Wukong mumbles an answer.
“I don’t care, just tell it what it was.”
Tripitaka closes his book and looks at the sky.
“It was at the very beginning when I said I thought you were smart.” Tripitaka looks at Wukong. “You went along with it so I kept on messing with you.”
Wukong turns to lay his stomach on the ground as he screams in rage. Tripitaka then chuckles at Wukong’s rage.
“That’s what you get for storming off at an innocent demon. I hope you realize your mistake and never do it again.”
Wukong turns back at the monk.
“That was your reason?!”
The monk nods. Wukong understands the punishment and sighs.
“I promise to never do that again, just don’t ever play with my emotions like that again please.”
Tripitaka pats the monkey’s head.
“I won’t as long as you don’t jump to conclusions, deal?”
“Deal” The monkey responds in a tired voice.
Tripitaka chuckles and pats Wukong’s shoulder.
“Come on, it’s getting dark, let’s head back.”
With that, Wukong gets up and follows his master, close behind.

Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

gag anime that you need to watch maybe
hi hello my name is juli and i will now gently guide ur attention to some top-notch shows, please pay attanetion
(this list is for people who don’t watch much anime or who are new to it. if ur a fucken weeb youve probably seen it all. dont @ me i want to help the kids)
ONE PUNCH MAN (the obvious 1st choice lol)
Tumblr media
Genre: Action/ Shounen
Expectation: OP protagonist with riveting backstory fights to become the strongest hero, makes many friends along the way who recognize his talents and pure heart, big bad scary villains make him stronger
Reality: OP protagonist is already the strongest hero. His backstory? After fighting a lobster-man with nipples drawn on him with a Sharpie, Saitama decides to do a workout routine every day, and somehow ends up becoming the most powerful known being in the universe. His main issue is that now, he literally can take down any villain with a single punch, and he’s very bored of it.
Best Qualities: Animation is bomb, music is dope, humor is funnie, and Best Boy is a man whose superpower is riding a bicycle. Also Saitama egg head
If you were in a coma for all of 2015, this is the main thing u missed. Moving on.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girls’ Nozaki)
Tumblr media
Genre: Romance/ Comedy/ Slice of Life
Expectation: Smol shoujo protag girl grows closer to her oblivious crush through a fated, if awkward, incident which reveals an embarrassing secret that has to be kept at all costs. Through one another they gain more quirky friends, help each other grow, and, eventually, the male lead realizes that what he needs has been beside him all along.
Reality: The crush writes romance manga, and that is literally all the man cares about. It’s not a secret, but when he told people they didn’t believe him. Nozaki and Sakura grow closer, but only because he confuses her confession with a request to be his Beta. They gain quirky friends through one another, but there is zero character development throughout the entire fucking cast. Every episode is run by Idiot Plot. All the characters share a singular brain cell. There’s a tall butch lady turning every girl in the school gay. Please watch
Best Quali-teas: Everyone is baby, lots of gay shenanigans, and toxic masculinity does not exist, the OP is pretty nice, too
I literally heard about this damn show, like, two months ago. This shit was released circa 2015. Pleeze watch
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. / Saiki Kusuo no Psi Nan
Tumblr media
Genre: Shounen/ Supernatural/ Fucking Everything tbh
Expectation: Slice-of-life supernatural where protag has psychic powers, albeit limited ones, and has to keep them a secret at all costs for fear of his safety. He has a few friends he loves and cherishes, and at least two girls who are in love with him that he has to choose between-- all of which are people he wants to protect from his double-life.
Reality: Kusuo is very aware that he is the protagonist of an anime, and he does not want to be. Born with pink hair? He rewrites the human genome to make colored hair normal. End of the world looming? He just keeps rewinding time so he doesn’t have to deal with it. Harem situation? He actively uses his powers to avoid all love interests at all times (see the above). The plot of each episode is him trying to stop the plot as quickly as possible without killing anyone. The main issue is that everyone around him is either dumb or just generally attractive to plot-driving circumstances, and they all, for some reason, want him to be in on their adventures.
Best Qualities: Heavy “me and the boys” energy, plenty of Idiot Plot, so funny that my 47yo mom who hates anime admitted that it’s funny, meta as fuck, occasionally sweet scenes, equally good dub and sub, Saiki is babie
The fandom for this shit is like. Nonexistent. Apparently it came out the same season as Mob Psycho 100, so that might be why. I almost didn’t watch it, but I got bored and it turned out to be a serious gem. Go watch if ur having a bad day, it will make u cry laughing
Sakamoto Desu Ga/ Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto
Tumblr media
Genre: Slice of life/ Comedy
Expectation: God I don’t even know. I’d say a typical slice of life where the quiet kid is bullied but makes friends, there’s a love triangle as they grow up together through high school, yadda yadda, but look at this dude. I can’t imagine him being anything other than what he is-- a legend.
Reality: The entire show is just a question of how extra one man can be, and how well he can pull it off. Sakamoto is an “average” high school senior (in the sense that he has no supernatural abilities), but he’s....far more than that. He’s Sebastian Michaelis if he’d never been a demon. Everything always works out for him in the most ridiculous of ways-- he’s just that good. He makes a McDonald’s uniform look like Prada. He’s so smooth his bully ends up having a crush on him (and yes, it is a gay crush. no heteros in this show).
Best Qualities: lots of homo content. the side characters, inspired by Sakamoto’s grace, all become better people, and you root for them. The circumstances are always average, but the presentation is fucking riveting. Watch to send ur depression into remission.
Another one no one talks about????? U all were so busy with ur broku no hero macadamias and ur Nartoes that you slept on this. Now’s the time to take back what was lost. Love yourself and binge this shit.
Nichijou/ My Ordinary Life
Tumblr media
Genre: Slice of Life/ Comedy
Expectation: Cute girls do cute, girly things and have fun with Their Close Good Friends (TM).
Reality: Cute girls get into very bizarre situations with extremely manic energies. Sometimes, the situations are normal, but the girls react in a bizarre, manic fashion. It will make you alarm-laugh.
Best Qualities: Adorable art style, little continuity, relatable as fuck
A nice little watch if you’re bored. I think the eps are on YouTube.
Pop Team Epic/ Poputepepiku
Tumblr media
Genre: Only God Knows
Expectation: Probably a cutesy 4koma-type thing with 2 schoolgirls having shenanigans.
Reality: A regular acid trip with lesbian icons Popuko and Pipimi who are not schoolgirls, but gods. Like if Eric Andre and Hannibal Buress were turned into omnipotent anime icons. Watch at your own risk.
Best Qualities: Lots of unexpected parodies and references amongst a shitpost of a show. The OP is a bop. Popuko terrifies me, but also empowers me as a young woman because she will not hesitate to kill a bitch. She and Pipimi love each other a whole lot, so it is LGBTQ content, which is always a plus.
I’m sure you’ve seen this one floating around. It will make you feel fear, and then laugh. Now, finally...
Ouran Highschool Host Club
Tumblr media
Genre: Romance/ Comedy
Expectation: The protagonist is a girl who is mistaken for a boy and must be the servant of six rich, handsome young men, all of which are in love with her, and her secret must be kept at all costs. A reverse harem anime with plenty of fanservice.
Reality: Haruhi is a genderfluid queen who doesn’t give a fuck what others think she is. Because she broke a Conveniently-Placed Vase and is relatably poor, she has to pay off her debt by being a host herself-- which means male-presenting when flirting with her female classmates to make her dough. The six rich, handsome young men all share three brain cells, and most of those cells go to the character who has one line per episode (usually, it’s “Yeah”. I hope that VA got paid well). The only love interest-- the “leader” and most popular of the six men-- is so dead-set on their club being his Found Family, he confuses his romantic feelings for Haruhi with paternal ones. This is obvious to everyone but him. He never gets the brain cells.
Best Qualities: Trans characters!! Lesbians!! Extreme “me and the boys” energy, except they’re all rich, so shenanigans skyrocket. Many 4th wall breaks. The most powerful Host looks like he’s 5. Any “fanservice” is never played straight. Takes the Found Family trope to a whole new level. Nice Parks & Rec-quality balance between hysterical and sweet. Everyone is in drag at some point.
I know all of us senior citizens grew up on this shit, but you younguns need to watch the classics to appreciate the newfangled stuff. I recommend watching when you’re in a cheesy rom-com mood.
Honorable Mentions:
I can’t count these as gag anime, but they’re still ridiculously funny.
Mob Psycho 100
Scissor Seven
Kill la Kill
Cells at Work!
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Ones I haven’t seen but have heard a lot about
Osomatsu-san
Himouto! Umaru-chan
Azumanga Daioh
Gin Tama
Sgt. Frog
Okay that is all just limke put this in ur feel-good tag because these shows will make you happy and donut for get to like and describe to my channel, where I post literally nothing at all ever good night.

Nichijou: My Ordinary Life, volume 1 by Keiichi Arawi
I bought this manga for my sister when she was 12 or 13 years old, she told me she’d had a tough time getting into it but now actively reads the series. Similarly, I started reading this manga but found it hard to getting past chapter 2, it sat on my ‘Currently Reading’ shelf for months and months whilst other books came and went.
Nichijou isn’t a hard read, it’s a light and silly comedy and isn’t text heavy at all, however there are two potential hurdles: firstly although Nichijou is about a bunch of high schoolers, which is a common story setting in manga, it adds random surrealist elements to the story. For example one of the characters is a robot and has a large wind-up key sticking out of her back, the school principal has an epic fight battle with a deer, and another character is frequently using big guns to shoot a fellow classmate who gets on her nerves because he acts like a Lord from the 19th century. There’s no logical reason to the surrealism, it’s a quirky humour thing which is amusing but can also be hard to wrap your head around.
The second problem is the visual design of the characters: all character faces are basically the same and the only distinguishable feature are their different hairstyles, this is a bit disorientating at first when you’re being introduced to them and trying to figure out who’s who.
After months of struggling to want to pick this up, I eventually finished the whole thing in less than an hour. In terms of size, this book is the smallest manga I’ve come across, not in page length but the overall height and width of the book, which actually makes it quite cute and small. The artwork is contained in very clear box panels making it feel even more like a comedy comic strip type thing. It’s not a bad book at all but with so many amazing things out there to read, this one just didn’t make the cut. My sister collects the series so maybe one day in the far future I might read more of the series, but it ain’t gonna be any time soon.
