I’m curious if you’ve ever read Das Sporking’s posts on the series and what you think of them? Personally, I think they make a lot of good points but they go way overboard when they talk about wanting to commit violence against the characters or even Meyer herself.

I read some of it back in the day, and I pretty much agree with you. Points were made, but the tone was not for me. I’ve always been in this weird middle ground between a fan and an anti. I’m basically that line from The Picture of Dorian Gray: “I didn’t say I liked it, Harry. I said it fascinated me. There is a world of difference.” 

Is Twilight good? Meh, I wouldn’t really say so. Compels me, though. I mean I’m STILL talking about it.  

I’ve always tried to be even-handed in my critique and remember that the hardcore fans and the author are real people. I tend to go with the “don’t ascribe to malice what can be explained by ignorance.” I don’t think hardcore, uncritical Twilight fans are like “Yes! I love toxic relationships and anti-Indigenous racism!” but rather they don’t see/notice those things out of ignorance, and then get defensive when its pointed out. And MOST fans these days, at least on Tumblr are aware of these things and engage more critically with the series while also enjoying what they enjoy.

There’s also a strain of criticism--and without going back to look at this one I can’t say for certain if it’s one of them--that tends to go out of its way to make everything seem as terrible as possible. That is, rather than focusing on things like anti-Indigenous racism or problematic relationship dynamics, imprinting on children, or a pattern of gendered violence, they read into and interpret seemingly benign things for maximum outrage. There’s plenty here to critique and call out without like, going on an angry rant about how sexist and evil Charlie Swan (and thus SM) is for giving his daughter a camera for her birthday because that’s just reinforcing how women are only valued for their appearances or whatever. Like I think it was just a camera my guy. 

I say that but I’m sure I’ve been guilty of it myself sometimes. But it is something I try to avoid, especially with things that are more just vampire tropes (mortal-immortal age gaps, turning someone into a vampire) versus SM specific things.

Educate yourself before diving into it. Trusted sources dedicated to that subject are highly recommended. Sites that allow anyone to edit pages such as Wikipedia can help but try to avoid them unless it is needed.

Do not disrespect victims. Try your best to keep your world, novel, or OC as mature and respectable as possible. Putting comedy into dark things such as real-world fights is a difficult task because it may come off as insensitive or derogatory. Although not impossible to mix comedy with world tragedy's, a good piece of media that has both dark content and entertainment is Jojo Rabbit. A 2019 movie based around WW2 and Hitler that has satirical effects to it whilst keeping serious and deep themes of the dark reality of Nazi propaganda, Anti-Semitism, and other sensitive content. It isn't impossible to use humour in dark events, however you need to take boundaries with it too.

Do not be afraid to use dark themes to educate readers or viewers. Showing the realism of the events and how horrific somewhere is a great strategy on keeping an audience and giving some information to them. It'll also benefit you on being aware of the real events and not misconstruing them for fiction.

¡Camila!

¡Hola! Mi fin de semana estuvo muy tranquilo la verdad, me quede aquí en la Ciudad de México y disfrute de tiempo de calidad con mi familia. ¡Que padre que fuiste al Bahidorá! Pero como dices, ese no es mi tipo de eventos, o quien sabe a lo mejor y si voy alguna vez me sorprenda y me la pase increíble, habrá que darle una oportunidad el próximo año. Y lo que me dices tiene todo el sentido, siempre he visto fotos del festival y lo único que se puede apreciar es la escenografía del lugar, que para empezar los recursos naturales son impresionantes, y agregando el diseño que los productores planearon se ve padrísimo, también la gente que asiste me parece super intrigante, parece que preparan sus outifits y cómo se pintarán la cara con mucha anticipación y realmente se ve muy bien. Es una manera de expresarse diferente, y yo creo que en este tipo de eventos todos van con toda la actitud, y es por eso se crea ese tipo de ambiente que mencionas en donde todos se comunican entre ellos a través de la música y del ambiente, al igual que a través de su lenguaje que expresa su forma de ser. La verdad no tengo la menor idea de cómo desarrollaría mi forma de expresarme en un ambiente parecido, si te soy honesta es algo que ni siquiera puedo imaginar, que horror. Siento que es algo que explotaría ya estando ahí y que sin duda trataría de expresar mi manera de ser y pensar al máximo. ¿Tu cómo te expresaste en este festival? ¿Tienes fotos para ver, y así poder comentar si en mi opinión expresaste toda tu ser? Y te prometo que intentaré ir en algún momento a este evento, como te digo, se me hace algo increíble como todos los que asisten se expresan libremente sin pensar en el ¿qué dirán?, al contrario, en este tipo de eventos todo el mundo va con una mentalidad super abierta y a involucrarse a full con todo lo que conlleva, y logra identificarse y expresarse.

Contestando a tu pregunta, estoy de acuerdo contigo cuando dices que en la actualidad vivimos la vida muy rápido y que no nos cuestionamos nada ni nos damos cuenta de nada. Retomando lo que te he mencionado en la mayoría de nuestra correspondencia, los diseñadores necesitamos y debemos de expresar todos nuestros ideales mediante nuestros artefactos, y por ende, ese objeto representará los sentimientos que fueron experimentados al crearlo, aunque también nadie va a pensar de la misma manera en la que pensamos nosotros, y muchas personas pueden interpretar las cosas de diferentes formas y sentir algo totalmente contrario a lo que se proponía, no se si te ha pasado, pero a mi si, que tu tienes un diseño, ya sea ya materializado o en boceto, y lo compartes con alguien que cuando le pides su opinión te da una retroalimentación totalmente diferente a lo que tu tenias en mente, ¿que opinas? ¿crees que a pesar de esto, un objeto debe de representar los ideales del diseñador? ¿que pasa si un objeto representa diferentes cosas para las personas? ¿eso es bueno o malo para un diseño?.

Por otro lado, estoy de acuerdo y a la vez en desacuerdo cuando hablamos sobre el capitalismo. Entiendo tu punto cuando dices que hoy en día se crean diferentes objetos los cuales son innecesarios y que solamente sirven para fomentar el capitalismo, pero también piénsalo de esta manera, siempre va a existir un nicho de mercado que no esta atendido y siempre va a haber alguien que este buscando llenar ese vacío. Eso pasa con ese tipo de productos como el cubo anti-estrés, este tipo de personas utilizaban, como mencionas, las tapas de las plumas o diferentes objetos para satisfacer sus necesidades y liberar el estrés con el que lidiaban, hasta que a alguien se le ocurrió crear este cubo, el cual solucionara sus problemas sin necesidad de utilizar estos diferentes productos y brindándole al publico una nueva propuesta, la cual fue bastante exitosa, así que si me preguntas, si esta alimentando al capitalismo, pero a la vez esta haciendo la función de un artefacto de diseño, causando un impacto en la sociedad y la cultura, y cambiando el comportamiento de las personas al satisfacer y solucionar sus problemas. A lo mejor para ti no transmite nada, pero porque no sufres de “estrés” o no tienes la necesidad de estar golpeando una pluma todo el tiempo, pero para las personas que sienten lo contrario creo que si les transmite mucho y es un objeto que tanto esperaban que tal vez por eso causó tanto furor y gente que no lo necesitaba lo comenzó a comprar. Esto es lo que opino, y honestamente me declaro capitalista, creo que hoy en día todo lo que hagamos esta relacionado con el capitalismo y lo fomenta, ¿crees que exista el diseño que no fomente al capitalismo? ¿cómo sería?, ¿te consideras capitalista?.

Cambiando un poco de tema, ¿te acuerdas de lo que vimos la clase pasada? creo que se relaciona un poco con lo que comentamos al principio de esta correspondencia y con el capitalismo, en la actualidad los objetos de diseño ya no siguen la función, sino que siguen el significado, y los diseñadores no queremos avanzar y diseñar por el dinero, al contrario, lo hacemos por querer entrar en el juego, por querer dar significado. Hoy en día el diseño es una herramienta para dar sentido, una herramienta para que las culturas generen realidad en base a estos, y que decidan que es válido y que no es, para que las personas se logren identificar con estos, ¿no te ha pasado que dices o te dicen que cierto objeto es “muy tu”? eso se debe a que los diseñadores te han hablado al oído, en otras palabras, han logrado que tu Camila te identifiques con sus objetos, te has apropiado de ellos, y has reconocido al objeto por lo que es. Me parece que la cultura esta en autopoiesis, y se va recreando y tomando un sentido nuevo, pero no todo es tan bonito, y en este caso la tecnología no es tan positiva, ya que va mucho más rápido que la cultura, es ahí en donde nosotros los diseñadores necesitamos tomar esta tecnología adelantada y tratar de traerla al presente basándonos en el conocimiento histórico y cultural para lograr aterrizarlo de la mejor manera, y lograr una aceptación de parte de los usuarios en las sociedades, aunque por más que queramos innovar, tenemos que pensar un poco en la forma ya que no podemos cambiarla radicalmente para no confundir a nuestros usuarios, un ejemplo es el SPORK, ¿lo conoces? es una cuchara con un tenedor incluido, que por más que lo intentaron, no logró ser un objeto que transformara a la cultura ni lograra un impacto. Los objetos existen objetivamente, cómo la interpretación de todo lo que nos rodea, pero todo el carácter que le damos al objeto, tiene que ver con lo subjetivo, con el sentido de realidad que estamos sujetos como personas de una sociedad, es aquí en donde entramos en el juego y hacemos todo lo posible para que nuestros usuarios se identifiquen con nuestros artefactos, que los hagan suyos y suceda eso que te comentaba, que digan que los objetos son “muy ellos”. Una desventaja que tenemos es que vivimos en una era de desmaterialización, debido a los avances tecnológicos, y nosotros necesitamos crear experiencias, estrategias y servicios, y ya no tanto un producto como tal, aunque hay miles de productos que seguimos utilizando y seguiremos necesitando, ¿piensas que podemos llegar a un mundo totalmente desmaterializado, en donde no necesitemos de nada material?

Me parece muy cierto que hoy solamente diseñamos por significado, para fomentar el capitalismo y lograr que las personas se identifiquen con nuestros productos y se apropien de ellos, es un poco lo que te comentaba, es claro que todos los diseños son parte del capitalismo queramos o no, solo hay que verlo desde el lado de la satisfacción de necesidades de los usuarios y de la apropiación que hacen con los objetos. La función esta solo para que los usuarios entiendan como funciona, pero el significado es lo principal, lo que lo diferencia, ¿crees que el significado es más importante para diseñar que la función? ¿te parece que estamos viviendo en un mundo totalmente material, en donde no nos importa el impacto que tenemos en las culturas, pero hacemos lo que sea para causar algo? Me interesa saber lo que piensas respecto a esto.

I find it funny that Harry Potter, with it's explicitly soul-damaging, runs on hate Dark Magic, has people trying to invoke Dark is Not Evil, and here we have someone trying to talk about corrupting, evil Dark Magic, in a world where our cutesy heroine spent the first half using the power of Dark.

Well, maybe if Harry Potter had a more clear definition of Dark Magic than "any offensive spell used by anyone other than an author-approved character"... Oh, and read another book. (This was part of a sporking of a Cardcaptor Sakura darkfic that had nothing to do with Harry Potter)

I ask because pretty much everything I know about Runescape is from a series of sporkings of these quests on Das Sporking by someone who is a major Zaros fan, and hence has an obvious bias against them. So I'd be interested in seeing the opinions of more neutral fans.

Even if I weren’t deeply anti-Discanon, this alone would make me not want to see Solo.
