THERE WEREN'T MANY CONCEPTS WHICH PREOCCUPIED KAGEYAMA'S MIND. the obvious main concern of his was volleyball, closely followed by how many times he had beaten hinata in a race, and then whether coach ukai would have enough meat buns in stock after practice. there wasn't much else which he felt he really had to think about more than once.
but against all odds, his one track mind begin to wander. to thoughts of a girl, no less.
it all started when daichi told him and hinata that they would have to get their grades up if they wanted to make it to the training camp. the brilliant solution presented itself to kageyama in the form of you, the unassuming smart girl who sat near the back.
you were alarmed at first when you were jolted out of the book you were reading by the presence of someone stood over you.
"oi, l/n," a gruff voice sounded out. you looked up to be met with the intimidating face of kageyama. his face was adorned with his regular scowl, though you must have reflected some momentary fear in your face because the boy's expression changed to a more neutral one.
"can i help you?" you tried not to let your voice waver as you noted just how tall your classmate was.
"you're good at maths, right?" you nodded slowly, waiting for him to add onto what he said. when he stared at you expectantly, you filled in the gaps for him.
"did you want me to help with the homework?"
"i'd prefer it if you could tutor me, y/l/n." you nodded again, a smile spreading across your face.
"yeah, i can do that." kageyama nodded once in acknowledgement, almost turning to leave before he hesitated. he bowed, albeit stiffly, and you tried not to giggle at the odd formality. but then he was dashing off, leaving you to your own vices.
even though he had run off before settling on a time and place with you, through the medium of hinata the two of you sorted something out. which explained why you were sat in the library after school, maths textbook spread out on the table in front of you and a thoroughly confused kageyama sat next to you.
over the course of that hour, alongside several more, kageyama's understanding of the subject evolved from cursing out cosines to shakily recounting theorems.
tests came around, and kageyama scraped a pass. he had permission to go to the training camp, and no longer needed tutoring. all he had to do now was play volleyball, so why was he so hesitant to leave you behind?

it had been a month since last interacting with you. you resumed your unassuming position near the back, nose usually buried in a book. kageyama resumed his place next to hinata, and everything would have returned back to normal if it weren't for the glances that kageyama cast towards the back corner for a glimpse of you.
his mind was plagued with the thought of you. it had been too many times that he found himself subconsciously heading to the library, before realising that he no longer had any tutoring sessions from you. kageyama would stay stood at the threshold of the library, blinking in confusion before turning on his heel, heading to the gym for practice like he should have.
he wasn't aware that something was going on until he found himself staring down at his hands, holding two cartons of milk from a vending machine.
his focus was off. where the genius setter used to have pinpoint accuracy, he now struggled to watch the ball without a thought of you tainting the edge of his vision with a bright smile. he didn't even have the heart to get angry at tsukishima's snide comments, or to brush off hinata's concern.
it was all your fault.
if he hadn't asked you to tutor him, none of this would be happening. kageyama had half a mind to march up to you again and demand what kind of spell you had managed to cast on him to leave him this hazy. but every time he looked in your direction and you happened to catch his eyes, he felt his throat constrict and his face burn up in a way that assured him that he would definitely not be able to get through a conversation with you.
so he resorted to watching you from afar. with sharp eyes, he followed your movements throughout the day, feeling something pierce through him whenever he saw you laughing at something, the sound meeting his ears despite hinata yammering away next to him.
it was a miracle that nobody else had picked up on his infatuation with you.

kageyama was beginning to get pissed off. at you? at himself? he couldn't tell.
so instead of thinking about his feelings, he ran. he didn't stop until he was panting for breath and his insides screamed at him the same way they always did whenever he was in your vicinity.
and when he finally did end up flopping onto the ground, glaring up at the sky, did he realise.
he's a coward. he's scared of the way you make him feel.
and he's scared of ever telling you.
