jason takes tim in because jack drake's a piece of shit and ends up doing his own growing in the process. not sure how to explain why i'm including this without spoiling it, but there is a Big Moment later in the fic that to me is equivalent to tim purposely cutting his comms off to deal with a situation himself (wip)

Call to a Lonely Earth by Drag0nst0rm

in the midst of brucequest, tim ends up on an earth where there are no longer any children and bruce has lost both his sons. i'm mostly including this one because i like it a lot, but—mild spoiler—tim does make a call explaining what he presents as a hopeless situation that he can't be saved from and then hangs up! (first fic is complete but sequel isn't)

also, while it doesn't quite have the same emotional force of what i was looking for, detective comics (1940) #698-99 is where i originally got the idea from and it does feature protective dick and alvin draper!

Misc. Pikmin 4 Character Trivia

Ever wanted all the Pikmin 4 character trivia in one place? Well, here you go. If I missed anything, feel free to let me know and I'll update this post.

Note: I'm not covering the Hocotatians & Koppaites because the former are major characters with a lot about them already written, and the only interesting trivia (IMO) about the latter is already "common knowledge."

This also isn't a document of *every* line of dialogue that a castaway can say. This is just stuff that I thought was interesting and/or info that you can't get from just reading their ID or talking to them once. Some castaways don't have any entries because they're either not that interesting or don't actually talk about themselves much.

Recent updates: Added a new note on Patch.

Rescue Officers

Collin

Has a wireless transceiver that has been passed down to him by his grandfather. He refuses to replace it and instead just fixes it whenever it breaks.

His hobby is tinkering with machines.

He's worked several odd jobs in the past to help pay for his education. These jobs include collecting space trash, ship construction, and cleaning the "outer walls of the colony". He considers his work as the comms operator to be significantly more difficult than any of his past jobs.

This has caused him to be multi-talented, but it also causes others to take advantage of him.

Despite this, he apparently isn't one for "physical labor."

Collin considers PNF-404 to be tiny, though this may be in reference to the universe, in which all planets could be considered "tiny."

Shepherd considers him young, but in reference to who/what is unknown.

Only in the comics, Oatchi seems to dislike Collin.

Shepherd

She has the highest certificate ranking in the Rescue Corps, and a special certification in Rescue Pup training. This is something very few officers have.

She spends all of her breaks at a dog run near the Rescue corps HQ.

Apparently, she spends much of their budget on dog food.

She met Dingo before she was captain when they were both training. This may mean that she's known him the longest of the other members. Most others are implied to have met her/been recruited by her when she was already captain.

She exceeds Dingo in martial arts and cross-country.

She doesn't seem aware of Dingo's crush on her.

She seems to experience some form of imposter syndrome during the main campaign but overcomes it near the end of the game.

Her family has lived with dogs since at least the first Captain's generation. Additionally, their family is implied to be immigrants from a different planet. Their original planet is unknown, but is highly implied to be Earth/PNF-404.

Her family's motto is, "There's no better judge of character than a dog."

By her own admission, the only creatures she can "handle" are dogs. Whether this also excludes other domesticated creatures is currently unknown.

Russ

His family runs a megacorporation on Giya, and as a result is incredibly wealthy. They're so wealthy that they can regularly afford golden pikpik carrots and just casually blend them into juice for a snack.

Said family is also very large and extravagant and seems to always invite the other rescue officers to their many parties, much to the latter's chagrin.

His mother is notorious in the Rescue Corps for "being quite the character."

He claims to have only joined the Rescue Corps out of curiosity.

While he lords his intellect above most others, he still recognizes Yonny as a genius in the medical field.

He wears a lab coat under his spacesuit. His mother gifted him 64 of them to bring on their current trip.

The Emergency Kit was the first item he prototyped after joining the Rescue Corps.

He is a fan of the reporter Muggs.

His natural hair color may be green, as this is the color of his eyebrows.

He's apparently prone to "interesting" injuries, likely due to failed inventions.

Dingo

Decided to become a rescue officer after being saved in the mountains by Shepherd's father, the previous Rescue Corps captain.

He dislikes dogs due to being traumatized by one during the same rescue, as he believed the rescue pup was trying to attack him.

He appears to fear Russ's mother.

He apparently believes that any drink (and possibly food, given his theft of Bernard's pizza) sitting out belongs to him.

Acknowledges that Collin is probably their most important team member, but he still takes advantage of his kindness from time to time.

He tends to refer to most of the officers by their title/job rather than name. (Comms guy for Collin, Science guy for Russ, the captain, etc.) Except Yonny which he shortens to "Yon."

He's childhood friends with Yonny.

Yonny

He's an avid reader, but prefers paper books to digital ones. He has boxes of them shipped to HQ regularly and they would have taken up 27 shelves on the ship if he were allowed to bring just the ones he wanted.

Has experimented on at least Shepherd and Dingo without their full consent. The former by not being transparent about what was in a vitamin supplement he gave her, and the latter by abusing his tendency to drink anything that's just sitting out. He has attempted to experiment on Collin, but it is unknown if he succeeded in doing so.

Apparently bursts into maniacal laughter when working in the lab by himself. The other officers just ignore it.

He's childhood friends with Dingo.

Bernard

He is very picky about food, to the point that their food storage has a special section just for him. It consists of expensive, specialized foods.

Like Collin, he has worked several different jobs over his career (including the president of a space-flight company). In the Japanese script, this is *apparently reflected in him having a combination of different dialects.

Also, like Collin, he considers his job as an officer to be significantly more difficult than his other jobs. However, he also considers it the most rewarding.

He invented an all-in-one meal drink that put a boxed lunch company out of business, solely because he finds digging through lunch boxes to be a pain.

Shepherd recruited him after he was able to deliver some packages for her faster than the post office would.

He has a history with a castaway named Santi whom he considered himself to be a part of a "dynamic duo" with. They were born about the same time, went to school and college together, and at some point became the latter's flight instructor. Bernard thinks of Santi fondly, but the feeling is not mutual.

He once piloted a 20,000 hour (just over two years) flight.

Civilian Castaways + Their Planets

Research Task Force

Twyla and Komo are close friends due to their mutual introversion. They consider each other "irreplaceable".

Komo considers Chet easy to talk to.

Twyla considers the concept of plate tectonics to be unheard of on her home planet. This may imply that Conohan doesn't have any natural mountains, volcanoes, trenches, earthquakes, etc.

Sammy's home planet of Ocobo was not always ravaged by perpetual storms. But once they started, the entire planet flooded and their planet's engineers developed artificial islands for the people to live on.

Sy is the youngest member of the Research Task Force.

Osa is Kit's senior.

Chet has considered asking Ren to try cooking the creatures of the planet, but ultimately decides against it.

TV Crew

Wolfgang and Muggs get engaged at the end of the game. If you talk to Muggs before rescuing Wolfgang, she will drop hints about already having some romantic interest in him.

Muggs is possibly one of only other people that can understand what Oatchi's thinking if her comments from Oatchi are to be believed.

Vonda claims that Wolfgang is apparently a good singer. Comparatively, she struggles to say nice things about Olimar's humming.

Frisé wrote a song called, "Song of Love." This is likely a reference to "Ai no Uta" a song used in the promotion of Pikmin (2001). The title directly translates to "Song of Love." However, the lyrics of the two songs seem completely different.

Satella Travel Employees + Guests

Molly appears to have a crush on Russ. She finds his intellect attractive and wants to wear his glasses.

Molly might also be of a higher intellect given that she once made and launched an unmanned rocket in a single night by herself (even if it exploded).

The name of the travel agency that Chewy and Santi work for, the Satella Travel Agency, is a reference to the Nintendo Satellaview.

Sheeba apparently resembles Chewy's boss.

Santi learned his piloting skills from Bernard.

He also seems to have a similar "accent" to Bernard, but it only comes out when speaking about the latter.

Santi appears to be fond of Chewy and is considering becoming a permanent employee for her sake. Whether these feelings are romantic in nature is unclear.

Planetary Science Club

Despite being the Planetary Science Club's adviser, Mika actually teaches ethics and knows very little about any kind of planetary science.

Sheeba appears fearful of Oatchi.

Sheeba wants to become a teacher when she grows up.

The Planetary Science Club students went on the planetary tour on a free raffle, but Mika had to pay out of pocket.

Kaia gave Mika a nickname: Meeki. Mika likes it, but Sheeba thinks it's unprofessional.

Keesh is apparently stronger than Sheeba, Kaia, and Mika combined.

Others

All of Beaux's roles in movies/shows are references to other Nintendo games and IPs. Specifically the first 3 Pikmin games where he plays the Olimar expy, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario, Kirby, and Link.

In a similar vein, his twin brother Alpin's company is called "e-Leader" as a reference to Nintendo's "e-Reader" accessory.

Alpin inherited the company from their father and works so Beaux can pursue his dreams of being an actor.

Alpin knows Fawks well enough to know exactly how he likes his coffee. (1 cup of coffee with 2 spoonfuls of milk, and 3 sugarcubes.)

From Kayz we learn a little about the different biomes on the other planets: Siguray has a scorching desert, Flukuey has steep, rocky mountains, and Ooji has a lush jungle.

Patch admits that he sees a "darkness" in Olimar's eyes, which implies that this is not his first life-or-death experience.

Patch is implied to have been or was inspired by a pundit to pursue his current lifestyle.

Bernise will actually change her fortune for you every in-game day.

Dalmo has been interested in creatures since childhood.

His hometown also has a waterfront, confirming that Sozor has at least one significant body of water.

While Dalmo never ascribes malice to any of the creatures, he appears somewhat cynical about society, calling adults the only beings capable of intentional deceit and acknowledging that being popular means not having to work as hard to get to the top.

Shnauz's home planet of Siguray apparently has iridescent, water-dwelling newts.

Jin has studied traditional sports, combat sports, martial arts, and the art of battle.

One of Corgwin's first builds was a dog-house.

Planet Generalizations

Some castaways from certain planets seem to have similar personalities/traits. Given that it's stated that things like the Koppaites' general inability to plan/being picky eaters is inherent to their race, it's possible that these generalizations apply to the rest of the races as well. I have not included planets with only one castaway. These are detailed below.

Sozor (Dalmo, Grace, Horatio): Have anti-social personalities. Dalmo prefers creatures to people, Grace seems disinterested in society as a whole, and Horatio seems inept at social interactions.

Flukuey (Jin, Molly, Dash, Patch): Have unstable professions and/or are adventure seekers. Jin is an explorer, Molly is a streamer of limited success, Dash is a spelunker from a well off-family, and Patch is unemployed but purposefully puts himself in dangerous situations for the thrill.

Ooji (Francois, Kingsly): Love flowers/plant life. Francois studies plant-life, and Kingsly is a florist.

Koodgio (Lapi, Boris): Artistic types. Lapi is a painter and Boris is an author.

Siguray (Shnauz, Kit, Osa): Interested in the qualities/history of materials/items. Shnauz appraises treasure, Kit is interested in minerals, and Osa is interested in archeology.

Castaways where it's difficult to determine if their similar traits would be found in their race due to other factors:

Ogura (Sy, Pitunia): Bother are interested in studying the onion and their environmental factors surrounding it, but both are also a part of the Research Task Force, a group made of individuals that are interested in studying the planet in general, so it's hard to say if this would be something inherent to all Ogurains, or if they just happen to have a mutual interest in this area of study.

Enohee (Ren, Frise, Muggs, Wolfgang): 3 of the 4 are a part of the same crew so would have common interests by default. Arguably all 4 are interested in entertainment as Ren was on a cooking show, so TV might be a very important industry to Enohee.

Neechki (Kaia, Sheeba, Keesh, Mika, Chewy): 4 of the 5 are in the same club and would have similar interests by default, and Chewy has little in common with the rest of them.

Nijo (Santi, Bernard): Both became pilots and were prone to changing jobs frequently, but their "Dynamic Duo" shtick of always being a part of each other's lives is played as a joke, so their similar lives/interests may not be due to race.

Planets where I couldn't identify a common thread:

Enohay (Puddle, Vonda, Bernise): I would have said creative/artistic fields due to Puddle being a stylist and Vonda being a singer, but I don't think a fortune-teller really falls under that.

Conohan (Twyla, Chowder, Alpin, Fawks, Beaux): They all have different professions and interests, two are siblings, and none have especially similar personality traits. In a sense, I suppose this would imply that Conohan is a very diverse planet.

Ohri (Yonny, Dingo): Neither seems to have much in common with the other.

Giya (Shepherd, Collin, Russ): Another diverse group. However, given the stark difference between Collin's and Russ's financial situations, may imply that Giya has significant class inequality.

on authenticity

My mood in the recent months keeps going from bad to worse. Today I randomly fell into the rabbit hole of checking out other patreon artists, which always grounds me in reality and cheers me up, perhaps in a weird way. Essay incoming \o/

Authenticity is a blob of a word that sounds almost pretentious nowadays. It gets sneered at. You either sell your soul, or you don't earn with your art.

What's authentic, being true to yourself, will vary from person to person. It's like a sliding scale of suffering that you will tolerate in exchange for a coin, while convincing yourself that you have fun.

The harsh truth of modern world is that if your art pays for your living, you've already reached success, no matter how you may feel about the type of content you actually make for that money. Insert the meme furry nsfw art here. Or not furry. Or even sfw, but comms, lots of comms every month. Or merch. Anything that sells. Products first, art second.

Marrying passion and profession is virtually impossible, yet I'm doing it, only thanks to your support. I'm acutely aware that, even as I choose to be "real" and talk about an artist's money-making in a raw way, it's still patreon talk, and yes, I'll plug the link as well, so technically this entire post is an ad *fingerguns*

I just feel so privileged being able to create whatever the fuck I want, literally, I take no comms/requests/guidance on what and how should I draw/write, I post experimental, sometimes provocative stuff, and still make enough to survive. This sole fact should get me through the day, whatever other struggles I may be facing currently (I am. I don't wanna talk about it rn, instead I distract myself with this text), I should always remember the unique place in life I managed to carve for myself.

There are madmen (gender-neutral) who toss $10-20 at me every month. The majority "only" pledges $1, the notorious tier that gets treated as a tip jar with no rewards by many other creators. All of my rewards are the same at $1 and $20 (save for the one-time digital artbook download at $10, just to be perfectly clear), it's a conscious choice and a risk I continue taking because it's how I am. I used to split rewards between tiers in the past, before xiv, and it was a lot of busy work while it made me treat my art less as art and more as product. This pic goes into the cheap box, this pic goes into the expensive box. Every month. It's. Definitely not for every artist.

Logistic hell of splitting and delivering rewards, different posts with less comments per post, also my discord roles/channels would have to be split, nowadays it's just patron, whether you give me $1 or $20, there's no visual disparity, you're hanging out in the same cool kids' club, and collectively making happy noises on Fragments Fridays.

Could I be making more money if I got rid of the $1 tier? Yeah. But, mercifully, after 2 years I don't need to. I legit make enough currently, my only worry is to keep what I have. Patrons don't stay forever, 2-5 people would leave every month, about the same number would join (hence my patreon ads, I need to keep people reminded of it, even if it makes me feel guilty every damn time). I did Research (tm) in the past to find out that my "bleeding" numbers are below average, i.e. it's good, people generally tend to stick around.

I put a lot of emphasis on the $1 because I'm kinda proud of what I managed to accomplish while staying self-detrimentally humble. Literally doing an impossible thing in a world that keeps burning down. So yeah if you've been feeling bad for only giving me $1, what matters is that there's enough $1s to make a difference. Together you're creating a phenomenon, and you should be proud.

There are many stupid little principles, hills that I'll die on, that make up my authenticity. I chose to speak of it here and now in order to sorta sell myself, so it feels hypocritical x'D But if I don't shine a spotlight on this, who will. I'm old and jaded and increasingly terrified of how insincere the internet's becoming. Everything's fake, sugarcoated, polished for sale. My art's always been a scream of defiance against all that, now that I'm more or less established, I wanna scream louder. Thanks for hearing my screams. You can scream with me too if you want.

i'd never seen a dog tear up

I don't think i ever wrote about it here but Bianca died on march 5th of 2021, she got diagnosed cancer in 2020 just before lockdown and major pandemic events and unfortunately every treatment I could get her in such times were not enough or too late and the moment her metastasis became unresponsive to pain medicine i decided to let her go

i know i didn't talk about her a lot here since twitter became my main site of activity for years but i remember when she had her accident back in 2016 i posted about her here too, i got a lot of support and commissions to pay for her treatment and thankfully i got support as well when i opened comms there to pay for her chemo and surgeries, and for that i will always be thankful. I don't know why but I kind of had thought if I ever post about Bianca again here in this little old blog it'd be about her beating her cancer, something happy

i really regret the fact i didn't post more about her when she was alive and once she died my depression got so bad i was either unavailable or tried to ignore the pain by focusing on personal work... to this day it still hurts to think of everything that i could or should have done even if there's no way i cannot go back in time

losing bianca after almost 13 years of being together and more than half of my life at the time with her was more traumatic than i'd like to admit, so i try to rationalize little things like not being able to replace her picture even after so long, the most i've done is sell her stroller and i still kind of regret that haha;; but neither of her brothers fit in and at some point it became too much of a reminder of her illness and last days it felt like i had to, but just that one

(even thinking she was part of my life for 1/2+ of it and that that fraction will become smaller as time passes feels so wrong it might make me cry again)

i didn't get to draw her as much as i wished either, i thought i could never capture her cuteness (i still struggle) but since i drew her again on her first death anniversary i thought "i could somewhat get her to look cute" and i try to draw her looking like this from then on https://twitter.com/hachibani/status/1500315555215126536

because of her i started drawing pets more often, my goal for this year was to draw her at least once a month but... i didn't draw her at all in february, i think i'd like to make up and draw her again this month if my free time allows it, i never thought i'd get to complete a comic (albeit short) about these feelings i've had, i have still, i don't know for how long i'll have

doing personal art like this has never been easy but i somehow feel less heavy now, maybe it's bc of the wall of text i'm leaving haha

i am an artist yes but not all of my thumbnail art is done by me! i've been doing more of it myself lately just kinda as practice and quick turnaround time since i'm getting back into art anyway, but a large majority of my thumbnail art for the past couple of years has been from my friend @Katydiids who I go to when I want some Official™ channel art that looks really really really good, like for example:

she's incredible and has a wonderful style!!!

i'll also sometimes commission from other artists when the request is a bit more specialized, for example the art in the Ratchet & Clank thumbs were done by another friend, @tigertoony !

but like i said, recently I HAVE been doing a bunch more of the assets myself! mainly cause, truth be told, lately i've been laying down tracks right in front of a moving train when it comes to scheduling LOL. but, again, it's good practice! my work definitely pales in comparisons to some of the other talents featured, and i love love love commissioning artists when it's not a last-second job, but here are examples of the stuff you'll see from my end!

and for future reference: thumbnail artists who draw me or my co-comms for any given video are credited in the descriptions 99.9999% of the time, and the remaining 0.0001% is either a drawing i did myself or it's an oversight! so always check the description if you're curious who did what!

fuck people who think furries are a big bad, evil, disgusting thing. I have a friend who will legit, genuinely gag whenever he even thinks of dating someone who is a furry - or interacting with one - or even just... coming across one.

like. dude. we are in the Freaks Game Design Major at Freaks Art/Comms University. furries are the least of my worries when the fucking animation class before us leaves the room stinking like ass or the dance class above our classroom won't let us hear the professor because of their stupid tap dance, and also, i even believe i fall into that category (hello, i've named myself Sardina, meaning, sardine in spanish, hello), which i guess it's why i'm so defensive about the topic. it's really no different from you (my friend,) being very into robots and wanting to build yourself a robot suit for cosplay or just to wear it from time to time because you feel good and cool in it.

TOUHOU TIME: YUUGI BEING ALL STRONG AND STUFF

This was finished a while back, I think towards the end of March (which now that I write it I have emotions about!) and I'm really proud of how it turned out! I think the initial inspiration back in February or January was just drawing a buffer woman. I think I can improve with that to some extent, but I wasn't trying to go for ripped, more swole, and I think I brought a nice energy to her.

I was initially just trying to draw Yuugi herself but I ended up finding a pic of the wrestler Rhea Ripley which I liked the pose of, and she was stepping on another woman in the photo so I decided to draw Marisa here too!

I also realised that since Yuugi had two major costumes this would be a great opportunity to flex my alt skills! I definitely think Yuugi looks better both in terms of her base looks and her alts, and it was really wonderful getting to design new alts for her. Some of the alts for her T-Shirt costume were based on her sprites in a MUGEN character pack, but all of the Robe alts were mine, I really like what I managed to do. I even had one alt representing Kasen Ibaraki! This was fun to do, and I hope to do more pieces with alts in future. The Umineko stuffs, I haven't really done that much, although I am gonna be posting a new piece based on that tomorrow so look alive!

I think after my uni course it was a little difficult to muster up any desire to draw, so it's nice looking back and seeing myself be able to draw at a pretty fast clip again! Part of that is cos that Umineko readthrough is motivating me to get pieces done faster but also it wouldn't work if I didn't already have the beans to do it. It's nice to remember why I'm doing this, why I love art.

Anywho! Upcoming is that Umineko piece I alluded to and I've also applied for that Seasons of Gensokyo zine so I'll hopefully have something in association with them soon! Comms open as usual, and I hope you have a wonderful day! <3

When Scrooge hears what's happened, he is understandably horrified, and rushes to the launch site at once.

And I'm floating in a most peculiar way And the stars look very different today

Della looks out at the stars. It's an unearthly beauty the likes of which she'd never imagined.

The Spear gets farther and father away from familiarity... from safety...

Planet Earth is blue And there's nothing I can do

Executive Cucumber's (sorta) thoughts about the Bad Batch 03×10 & 03x11!

All right guys, I'm not doing my full list of thoughts. These episodes were really, really emotional for me for many reasons and I do not have the emotional energy to do my usual dives. I'm stepping away from the fandom in general for this week. Honestly, for my mental health, I just do not need to be around Fandom discourse right now. I've already left the pertinent subreddits and hopefully I'll survive.

But my brief thoughts!

So, I majored in the Humanities in college. I saw and read a lot of amazing art. But there was a category of art that I like to call, 'this was beautiful and poignant and life changing, but I never want to consume it again.'

These episodes fall under this category. They were art, and they were excruciating.

I also am still firmly in camp 'CX-2 is Tech.' Because it actively makes The Point of No Return less tragic if it is not him. Part of the reason I was sobbing during it was that it was TECH who was being so cruel, destroying the home he'd nearly had, destroying HIS ship, nearly killing his brothers.

And it's Tech, who gave Omega her first comm, who loves her, who would die to keep her safe, who takes her comm and takes her back to Tantiss.

Plus, who the heck else says 'domicile?'

(On the plus side, he gets his revenge on Cid)

My heart is broken for Omega. I hate that she has to make this choice. I KNEW she was going to sacrifice herself. If anyone says 'the Empire did nothing wrong' to me, even as a joke, they're losing a finger.

I dread how the rest of the Batch are going to confront each other about this. Crosshair was also the only one who would let her do this. In a positive way.

...I loved seeing Phee.

I wish I had more to say about Identity Crisis, but I spent that episode trying to overcome my disappointment that it wasn't about Tech. It was still an exceptional episode, regardless of my expectations.

But I do want to say, Cad Bane takes a lot of kid jobs. What's up with that? Weirdo.

Anyway, happy birthday to me! I get: Omega getting taken and Tech destroying everything he loves. Yaaaaaaaaaaaay.

Leader - Terrence Suave (Age 38) -> Current leader of the Toppat Clan. He's starting to regret his choice of Right Hand.

Right Hand - Reginald Copperbottom (Age 24) -> The clan's youngest Right Hand, and son of the former one. He's not been very impressed by the actions of the clan's new leader.

Head of the Airship Division - Apple Seed (Age 32) -> It takes 185 apple seeds to kill an adult. In the Toppat Clan's Airship division, it only takes one.

Head of the American Division - Danny Danger (Age 29) -> Farther like son, a born leader and jerk. He doesn't like the new Head of Transportation.

Head of the EU Division - Wilhelm Krighaus (Age 54) -> He's the oldest elite and division head in clan history at 19 years. He's looking forward to retirement.

EU Division - Ahnoldt Schwarz (Age 27) -> The future head of the EU division. He's currently learning the ropes from Wilhelm Krighaus.

Head of the Asian Division - Mr Red (Age 41) -> No one knows his real name, but he always wears red, whether that's his own, or that of his division's enemies.

Head of the Oceniana Division - Hōkū (Age 37) -> A vocal member of the Toppat Clans Manipulator community. He got his name for being there to guide his kind in the dark.

Head of Transportation - Mr Macbeth -> Trained by Tim Smith, he joined as the clan's new Head of Transportation. Despite this, the other elites don't like people who jump the ladder of power.

He doesn't like the Head of the American Division.

Head of Communications - April Mayday -> She's in charge of the major comm line, relaying messages between divisions & clan leader.

Head of Finances - Albert Poshley -> He's a descended of one of the original clan founders, funding the Toppat Clan for generations. Needless to say, he's the unofficial head of finances.

Hello folks, I wanted to get you guys some content since it's been a while since I've had any art or writing. So here's some concept art I needed to make for Ch.10 (I bet you can't guess what that chapter is going to be about).

These turned out really nice, and I love how cute young Ahnoldt looks. I'm also very happy with the colour pallets. I did a bit of experimenting, pushing beyond my normal colour choices, and some of these are REALLY good.

This is 13 years before the events of Lost Children, and I also threw the ages of everyone in there since I figured you guys would find that fun :)

I hope you don't mind if I ask a question I'm a noobie in egl and jfashion in general and I was wondering if it's ok to purchase replicas that are permanently discontinued or from defunct brand's? I don't want to support replicas but a lot of my dream items are very overpriced on the aftermarket :'(

it's no problem at all! apologies for my answer being quite long, i have a lot of thoughts on this.

depending on who you ask, the answer to this question will almost always differ. the whole replica debate has been quite controversial for a long time. what you decide to do is ultimately up to you and your beliefs. given that you're new to the fashion, it would be best to give yourself time to form your own opinion. i'm not trying to dissuade you with my answer or seem impartial, so i would like to remind you that you're completely free to disagree or do your own research! with that being said, i'm open to explaining what i personally think about it and why i hold the opinion that i do.. but first, some initial context and history on replicas:

if you comb through old discussions on blogs and on livejournal in the early 2000s, replicas were a lot more common with less stigma surrounding them compared to now. you could chalk this up to a number of reasons: comm members being young at the time, japanese brands not being nearly as accessible as they are now, sales platforms being underdeveloped without all of the rules we know today being in place yet, and for the same reason that there were a lot of general unrelated misunderstandings of the fashion itself back then, ignorance. it understandably takes a lot of time to research certain topics, especially with the existing language barrier and the fashion still being rather new to a majority the west at the time.

the general consensus on replicas has changed, or rather, evolved since then. to give a fair warning, a decent amount of replicas are often frowned upon within the community. that's not to say all replicas are, or that the community operates as a hivemind, because others will disagree with this sentiment. rather than there being an existing black and white answer i could provide you with, it's more so determined on a case by case basis. there are varying levels of what's deemed acceptable versus unacceptable, depending on a combination of some specifics of the item itself and who you ask. most people tend to go by the standards of the FAQ of lacemarket—the largest and currently most commonly used EGL sales platform—which (reluctantly) allows design replicas of nonprint dresses and accessories like bags and shoes, but disallows replicas of dresses with prints, brand-created mascots and characters, or any brand name logos. this portion of the FAQ was borrowed by the illegal replica item guidelines first written and enforced in 2012 by the moderators and admin of the original secondhand EGL sales platform predating LM—egl_comm_sales on livejournal. from what i remember, these were initially instated due to legal threats from AP.

they're both linked for you to check them out yourself, but to give a short explanation: design replicas that aren't copyrightable are not illegal to sell. both guidelines have been determined by what is considered legal or illegal under US/Japan's copyright laws.

a couple of lolita brands, namely ones that retail in the US and that can afford a lawyer to assist them through the process, do have trademarks registered here.

i don't support most replicas personally, and don't own any myself. that's not to shame others for doing so, it's simply a matter of personal opinion. i do think replicas are more "convenient" so to say, when it comes to availability, affordability and sizing for many.. but it's important to consider that this convenience is made available at the expense of the designers and the company itself. when it comes down to it, i strongly believe it's art theft.

many have justified replicas by citing that certain brands are "large enough" for it to not matter, and that it's only hurtful to "indie brands" but are heavily overestimating the size of said "big" brands to begin with. despite brands being largely known and considered "big" within lolita, i find even the biggest examples to be miniscule outside of the subculture itself. lolita brands are considered to be "luxury fashion," but that's specifically within lolita. when compared to near universally known large corporation designer luxury brands that also get replicated, take Chanel or Gucci for example, they are different in many ways. brands like Angelic Pretty and Baby are very well known strictly in terms of the lolita community.. as the biggest brands that exist, really. but to put it into perspective: when we leave this already very niche sphere of fashion, a typical person on the street is very unlikely to recognize or know of either of these brands, but very likely to know the popular "normie" luxury brands. when comparing profits, number of clothing articles and accessories produced, or even the number of employees behind these operations—they're in completely different leagues. AP and BTSSB make, give or take if i had to loosely estimate, somewhere between 100~200 of each release. according to what (limited information) could be obtained through public records, each are reported to have about 60~68 employees. purely taking these as estimation references rather than exact numbers due to it being quarterly report data. so where does this leave the rest of lesser known lolita brands if these two are at the top? the numbers on all counts would (assumingly) be even lower.

i do think replicas are hurtful to the fashion/hobby itself due to how niche the hobby is and small the community is. realistically, there isn't a plethora of endless brands we have to choose from. it's important to show support to the brands we do have available to us to keep them up and running and to not take them for granted. brands, especially ones running on a smaller scale, come and go throughout the years. many of them discontinue due to lack of sales. i find that funneling money to producers of replicas doesn't always take away money from these brands, for example: it wouldn't necessarily directly impact a release that isn't currently being sold, or a defunct brand as the one you mentioned. however, almost everything is available secondhand with patience.. and if at a higher price, waiting for a different listing of it, budgeting, saving, or sometimes even negotiating a hold or a payment plan with the seller are all options. there's always a question of, "if i'm buying something secondhand, the brand isn't directly getting my money anyway.. the seller of the dress is. so why does it matter?" but buying brands secondhand also supports brands. any money that isn't going towards replicas that harm brands is still helping, even if indirectly. buying replicas does financially support the production and the practice of making them, and other replicas they may be making that could be harming active brands and designers. this includes websites that advertise their replicas as originals and scam the unknowing.

plus, for what it's worth: it helps to imagine yourself in the shoes of the designer. i always think that if i created a design or had drawn something original that i was proud of, and if it were stolen and reproduced for someone else's profit, i'd be pretty upset about it. if i love a design enough to want to buy it, i would not want to offend or harm the individual who made it. for some of us, they're just products or clothes. but a lot of these were once, or still are, the designer's dream or passion.. a soulful creative project made out of love and made with a lot of effort. replicas are like thieves of originality and of this inspiration, in a way.

i believe avoiding replicas is not only ethical, but it lends to the existence and longevity of the fashion as we know it (a slow fashion, not a fast one.) i love the fashion and subculture and will always choose to support the brands we have while we still have them, both directly and indirectly.

► COMMISSION PROCESS

If you are interested in a commission, please DM me! You may provide as many or as little references as you got, since I can work with or without them. I will also give you an estimate final price and due date.

Once I agree to take the commission, your piece will go through 4 phases:

Sketch - You will have 2 or 3 rough sketches to give you an idea of what I will draw. Pick from the sketches for me to render, or suggest one (1) completely new posing idea.

Blocking Render - The sketch you choose will be cleaned and its pose/s fixed.

Color Render - The lineart will now have colors, highlights, and shadows.

Final Render - A final few layers of effects will be added to the piece.

My turnaround time for a piece is about 3-8 business hours (2-3 days) from the time you approve a sketch.

During the blocking and color render stage, I will provide an update during which to let you know how far along I am. You may request up to 3 major revisions during which. Major revisions include:

However, harassment over my work speed, art style, and terms of service will not be tolerated and result in your piece getting deprioritized, put on hold, or cancelled without a refund. The same applies for when you cease communication with me within one month without prior notice.

While I draw during nighttime, I have my DMs open during the day. I officially take Sundays and Mondays off, so inquiries during this period will be ignored until Tuesdays.

My payment channels are through Paypal (international) and GCash (Philippines) only. My prices already cover Paypal and other fees, so the price I charge is the money you pay.

I will expect 50% payment from the time of acceptance until the sketch stage. Please note that until I get the initial payment, your commission will be put on hold.

I will expect the other 50% when I give the final render. Tips are not mandatory, but they are appreciated. Failure to pay the other 50% will result in a ban.

Commissioned pieces and in-progress previews will be hosted on my end up until 1 month from the time I finish a piece. By agreeing to this, it will be assumed that I can delete these works from my storage and you have retrieved and hosted your commissioned piece on your storage.

Commissioned pieces can be requested to be put under an NDA. You must state this prior to the sketch stage. Failure to state this intent means that you agree to have your commissioned piece automatically published on my socials.

Tumblr seems to be sliding in a downward spiral, and it feels like the start of the end of a fandoming era for me. I've been through it before; platforms are born then die, and life fandom finds a way. I'm just not looking forward to floundering for a bit, and dreading what the next hub will look like.

AO3 isn't really a place geared or meant for the same thing, and that's fine. My only fandom-related activity took place on AO3 only for a few years between my leaving LJ and joining Tumblr, and I lived ;-) But during that time, I was my own little island in fandom. Reading, leaving a few comments, not being super active. It's only when I found a community again that I was back to being really active in fandom once more.

And it's not that I actually use Tumblr to post about myself, but I do use it to read and reblog cool things - art, gifsets, science stuff, discovering new fandoms, and the like. I'm not sure where else I could find my people, with sameish purposes. The other sites I've tried didn't fill that niche in a way that suited me, in part because of how they look and work, in part because of who and what is(n't) there.

I have DW & PF accounts just to be safe, but I'm not very fond of group chats Discord-style - and without Tumblr, IDK how I'd even hear of new communities where I might pop in once in a while, loins girdled and everything. The micro-blogging platforms are not what I'm looking for either. Sure, I can follow a few DW comms and blogs; I already occasionally do and I will be more consistent about it if I must.

But one of my greatest fear is that the next platform will be phone-based, app-only, or some such BS - and that is something I just won't be able to deal with. Phones are tiny, it's uncomfortable to write anything, I don't like touch screen and much, much prefer a proper keyboard and a mouse (copy-pasting on a screen? (x_x) << it me), art/pics are too small to properly appreciate, a phone isn't comfy to hold for a long time for me, and the app system means you have no control over anything as a user… and that anything there must be Apple Approved, dick-free, blood-free, and tasteless. And I say this as someone who's pretty much uninterested in sex IRL or in my entertainment ;-) I still support and want the tits, the gore, the everything, and as long as I have the tools to curate - oh, wait. Curate things myself? That's not something that's popular these days, is it? It's not going to generate money, if I'm happy ;-)

So… I guess I'll play some more on Neocities, and see if anyone wants to have webrings again? (it would be fun and nostalgic, but not really viable on a large scale; people who haven't known those would just laugh and point and go on the InstaTok of the time).

So here is my little cane-waving rant of the day! I know things evolve and change and that in ten years I'll be rolling my eyes at my moping. It's only that I feel tired of moving from one shitty platform to another, of fearing I won't adapt (or more accurately won't want to adapt given the annoyance/benefit ratio) to whichever new place things will move in a few years. It's saying goodbye to a former home, moving, and hoping you'll make another home elsewhere kind of sniffles today!

We already know the next platform. It has been Discord for a few years now.

If you want the one after Discord, I think you're looking at waiting things out for quite a few years (or until Discord makes a major misstep as a company).

True, real time chat is not for everyone, but small discords with well-chosen channels can operate more asynchronously. Just like a lot of people who hated the look of Tumblr early on eventually capitulated, a lot of chat haters have jumped ship to Discord already.

Realistically, 90% of fandom always goes where the action is, no matter how much they claim the features make that space impossible, and 10% disappears.

We might get the 10% back on the next platform or they might leave fandom for good. There were LJ-haters who resurfaced post LJ era.

But as for where you'll find out where people are... probably AO3 author's notes.
