Piarles + 21 ❤
hi anon <3 this got out of hand but i need to stop pretending my piarles ficlets won't get out of hand. so.
enjoy this uni/roommates AU for piarles + love confessions :)
Every year, the English department held their annual Valentine’s Day carnation sale. And every year, Charles and Pierre’s dorm filled with carnations with anonymous messages. Most of them were addressed to Charles, but Pierre was more than satisfied with the amount of flowers he received - especially since Charles always seemed overwhelmed by his mountain.
“I do not understand what the point of sending it anonymously is. How am I supposed to know who is in love with me if they don’t even sign it?” Charles asked each year, exasperation and bewilderment clear on his face. Pierre would be lying if he said that he didn’t find it adorable.
Pierre would also be lying if he said that he hadn’t been sending Charles a carnation each year, adding one more to the massive bouquet his roommate amassed.
It had started as a joke their first year. Pierre stopped by the table on his way to class, typed out a line from a poem he enjoyed, and went about his day.
“I look at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world”
He thought it would be funny for his roommate to receive a carnation from an anonymous suitor. Pierre would pretend to help him figure out who it was, and then eventually he’d admit to sending it as a joke.
He didn’t know that his roommate would receive so many that it was pointless to try to hunt down the sender.
He also didn’t expect that somewhere along the way, he’d start to actually develop a crush on his roommate.
Their second year, he sent another carnation, with another line from the same poem.
“the fact that you move so beautifully more or less takes care of Futurism”
Charles wasn’t much of a poetry reader. Pierre figured he wouldn’t catch on.
Their third year, he sent another carnation, another line from the poem.
“what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank”
Pierre watched as his roommate read each of the carnation messages. Charles’ expression remained neutral as he read through them, and Pierre felt a slight pang of disappointment.
Their fourth and final year, Pierre decided that he needed to be brave. He was going to sign the message this year.
Their plans weren’t solidified for post graduation yet, and this could be his final chance to tell Charles how he felt. Four years of living together had given him plenty of opportunities to be honest with Charles, but he had never been brave enough to take that leap.
He typed out one last line from the poem, and below it,
“it seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I’m telling you about it
I love you
-Pierre”
The carnations and messages were always delivered on Valentine’s Day.
Pierre saw the two stacks of flowers sitting outside his dorm room when he got back from class, which meant that Charles wasn’t back yet. They had an agreement not to read any of their messages until they were both home, celebrating the holiday with their carnations and the candy that Charles’ mom sent them every year.
Pierre placed the flowers on the table, pleased that the piles were pretty equal this year.
Charles arrived home shortly after and rolled his eyes with a laugh when he saw the piles of flowers. Pierre suddenly felt nervous — the weight of his confession feeling real now that his message was on the table amongst the rest.
Pierre grew even more nervous as Charles expression remained neutral as it did every year. Had he seen Pierre’s message and ignored it? Had his flower not been delivered?
They were each down to one flower, one last anonymous message. Pierre pulled the tag off his carnation and read the message.
“Would you like to have a Coke with me?
I love you
-Charles”
He looked across the table, making silent eye contact with his roommate.
Charles was smiling, his eyes shimmering. He grabbed his backpack off the floor, unzipped the small pocket at the front, and pulled out three slips of paper. He slid them across the table to Pierre.
Pierre looked down at the papers. They had obviously been handled a lot — creased with folds and slightly tattered at the edges, like Charles had been carrying these slips with him for a while.
He picked up one of the slips and saw the message he had sent Charles a year ago. He picked up each of the other slips, and found that they were his messages from the first and second year. He looked back at Charles with wide eyes.
“I looked up the poem and I saw you had one of Frank O’Hara’s books on your bookshelf. I wasn’t sure if it was you, but I…figured it was worth a shot anyway,” Charles said softly, tentatively. “But now,” he added, sliding the final slip of paper over to Pierre with a smile.

"Having a Coke with You"; Frank O’Hara
(Having a coke with you) is even more fun than going to San Sebastian, Irún, Hendaye, Biarritz, Bayonne
or being sick to my stomach on the Travesera de Gracia in Barcelona
partly because in your orange shirt you look like a better happier St. Sebastian
partly because of my love for you, partly because of your love for yoghurt
partly because of the fluorescent orange tulips around the birches
partly because of the secrecy our smiles take on before people and statuary
it is hard to believe when I’m with you that there can be anything as still
as solemn as unpleasantly definitive as statuary when right in front of it
in the warm New York 4 o’clock light we are drifting back and forth
between each other like a tree breathing through its spectacles
and the portrait show seems to have no faces in it at all, just paint
you suddenly wonder why in the world anyone ever did them I look at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world
except possibly for the Polish Rider occasionally and anyway it’s in the Frick
which thank heavens you haven’t gone to yet so we can go together for the first time
and the fact that you move so beautifully more or less takes care of Futurism
just as at home I never think of the Nude Descending a Staircase or
at a rehearsal a single drawing of Leonardo or Michelangelo that used to wow me
and what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them
when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank
or for that matter Marino Marini when he didn’t pick the rider as carefully
as the horse it seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience
which is not going to go wasted on me which is why I’m telling you about it

y'all know I'm not ~romantic~ BUT it's my gf's birthday (in her timezone) so here's "Having a Coke With You" by Frank O'Hara but it's full of links to nice things for her just to be extra gross and cute about it. Sto lat, skarbie <3

1, 7, 15 and 16 for the writer asks please?
1. give short descriptions of all your current WIPs.
Revelations (Hellsing) -- Christ it's impossible to summarize this epic well, so I'll just be glib: Alucard and Seras get their own happily ever afters, but they gotta earn that shit first. Leads in with a romance and bait-n-switches to epic fantasy. Lots of worldbuilding (mostly of the vampire world), reckoning with past trauma, and larger-than-life supernatural political strife. Remember, you can refuse The Call of Destiny, but The Call knows where you live!
Carolinas (Hellsing) -- After a spate murders, Seras goes to the South Carolina swamps to investigate and finds a vampire man living there. He's not the one killing everyone, but he knows who is. Romance ensues.
Nightcap (Hellsing) -- Short PWP one- to two-shot, Female Reader dares Alucard to come seek her out after he's all worked up from a successful mission, and finds out that a bloodlusting Alucard doesn't bluff.
Subtext of You (Stardew Valley) -- The angst of Revelations got to be too much so I made a sugar-sweet side project where Elliott and a shy Female Reader fall in love. There’s not really a plot here but I try to shoehorn one in.
Highway (Original Work) -- Narrator finds a gas station in the middle of the desert that appears to be open with people inside, but there are no cars anywhere in the lot. Squid Games/Lord of the Flies eldritch horror ensues.
7. what books have shaped the way you think about writing the most? why?
God, that’s a tough one. Overall I’m often inspired by the things I don’t see often in modern fantasy/sci-fi/horror, but there are certainly books I hold up as aspirational examples, such as the impressionist, avant-garde storytelling in Mark Z Danielewski’s House of Leaves and the simple but tense storytelling in tales such as Penpal by 1000Vultures. Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles was also a formative work for me, and I aspire to write simple but beautiful prose as well as he does. I’m probably a very long ways off but hey, it’s good to have goals, right?
I also have a number of really great writing references I own that have been invaluable.
15. what do drafting and revision look like for you?
Every story starts with an outline of the major plot points and maybe some scenes in between, if I have a really strong idea of what they look like. This part involves a lot of lengthy discussions with my beta to make sure everything makes sense.
Then on to the first draft. This part is the hardest for me. I basically try to shit out as many words as possible without stopping, starting with laying down the dialogue. Real utilitarian “just describe what’s happening” stuff, with no regard for the art of writing.
The magic is in the editing, of which there are many rounds. First round is go back and tweak physical action descriptions. Then another round to add narrative introspection. Then another round to add any narrative exposition, though I try to limit this. Then another round for setting description. Then another round to correct grammar, word choice, spelling. Then another round to correct for rhythm and flow (NaturalReader app is invaluable for this). Then I send it to my beta reader for corrections and suggestions, then incorporate those. Then a few more rounds because I’m paranoid. Then I get tired of fucking looking at it and kick it to publishing.
16. to what extent do you research for your writing?
Way too much. I’m one of those people who likes to try to put as much realism in my fantasy as I can, even for shit that probably no one will ever notice. Like really, just look at my recent posts. Calculated a whole ass lunisolar calendar for a fictional horoscope that may or may not be valid in-universe, because it’ll bother me if the timeline is off. My most recent Google search was how fast an elevator and a bullet train can travel, respectively, because I needed to calculate a realistic depth for the underground vampire city.
I can’t help it, though. It’s a labor of love.

9, 11, 18, 23, 26, and 31 for the game asks please
Tumblr media
9. A game you played completely blind with no prior knowledge of and enjoyed/loved
Recently it was the Hitman trilogy! I had never heard of it before and my friend just asked if I'd consider getting it cause she wanted to watch me play, and I HAD A LOT OF FUN! Usually I go in playing mostly blind when I pick up a new game, but sometimes I'll do a lil research to get an idea of the vibe and such
11. Do you prefer ‘blank slate’ main characters you make yourself or otherwise project onto, or characters with personality and backstory?
ACTUAL CHARACTERS ALL THE WAY!!!! I don't really understand the blank slate thing because it's... Not me. I can connect with characters more when they're their own people and I can start to understand THEM and how THEY establish themselves in the narrative, if they're just blank it feels lazy and like the developers expect me to do the work they should've been doing...
Like, tbh even the 'blank slate' characters (like link, Mario, chrono...) All have personality cause THEY DO THINGS I DON'T DO..? And I'm glad in loz and Mario that they've leaned more into the characters because like. It's better...
Like PERFECT example of that is re7 vs re8, Ethan was supposed to be a kinda blank slate but IT SUCKED because he HAD A PERSONALITY but it was BAD because they tried to make it a non personality so every time he actually said or did something it was somehow ALWAYS exactly what NO ONE would say and took players out of it. They seemed to have learnt from that cause he was more spunky in 8 AND I LOVE IT. IF HE SAYS OR DOES THINGS THAT *I* WOULDN'T PERSONALLY DO I CAN STILL ENJOY IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT CAUSE THAT'S ETHAN WINTERS AND NOT ME!!!!!!!
18. A game location you really like
Any game that has a floating island LMAO. I really love how elegant and beautiful the kingdom of zeal is, it just blew my mind as a kid the first time I played.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And skyloft just feels so comfy and chill...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
23. A “Wow” moment of awe
I gotta go with the moment when you first hear wind scene in chrono... When you first see the map for 600ad... It just felt so special and I knew I was going to enjoy it. It still gives me chills sometimes I really enjoy it
26. Realism or stylized?
STYLISED!!! I LOVE STYLISED SOOOO MUCHHHH!!! PIXEL ART AND LOW POLY AND ART STYLES MY BELOVED!! like look at wind waker with its toon style that STILL LOOKS AMAZING and even Skyward sword that was a kind of mesh of the ww toon style and the tp darker style and went for a vaguely impressionist style!!! IT'S SOOOO PRETTY!!! realism can be cool but like.. it immediately dates it. I don't think a video game can ever be perfectly realistic cause there will ALWAYS be limitations, and by trying to fight against it by striving for hyper realism just suckkkkkkkkssssssssssss. That's not to say I hate realism and will never enjoy it, but I really think games that have a stylised art direction and really lean into it stand on their own a lot better
31. Someone has never played a video game before but is open to trying any genre. What game would you recommend as their first?
Hmmm. Honestly I'd want to recommend something like Mario Galaxy or Spyro 2 because they demonstrate the kind of action and platforming game styles that are pretty easy to understand as a new gamer, but also in fun ways! It's hard to give a rec if someone has no experience and no preference, cause I like to base recs on people's tastes so I'd hopefully be recommending a good one lol, but I think if someone had never played anything before and played galaxy or s2 it'd be a good base to figure out what things are appealing without the games being too overwhelming, yknow?
